AutoCAD Civil 3D :: Merging Duplicated Files But With Unique Grading And Surfaces

Jun 8, 2012

I started with a points file which I created an existing surface called EG. I then used a number of feature line to create the gradings, grading surfaces and associated volume surfaces (compared to EG) also had other drawing elements and aerial photo in place. I had a lot of grading scenarios to do and it was all in one file. It was getting out of hand, so I duplicated the file, deleted the gradings (retained the EG surface) then added another set of new gradings and volume surfaces against EG. I did this in 4 files. So now I have multiple files that contain duplicates of the same EG surface and other features, but have unique gradings and surfaces referenced to those individual EGs.

Files all have similar structure:

+Various features (duplicated in all files)

  - base aerial photo

  - other drawing elements

+Surfaces

  - EG surface (duplicated in all files)

  - Grading A-1 surface

  - Grading A-2 surface

  - Grading A-1 volume surface

  - Grading A-2 volume surface

+Site A

  - Grading A-1

  - Grading A-2

I recognise now that I should have data shared the EG surface from 1 file (and xrefed the other common drawing elements??) but given my situation now, what is the recommend way of putting it all together?

AutoCAD Civil 3D :: Merging Surfaces Connecting Grading

Apr 25, 2013

As you can see in my attachment, I have a emergency spillway coming out of a dugout wetland.  The fill area, the pool area, and the emergency spillway channel are all separate surfaces.  All three of these surfaces are created from gradings.  The fill was a feature line drawn around the top witdth of the dam, and then graded down to the Existing Ground.  The channel is another polygon feature line with elevations at each PI and then graded up to the EG.  The pool was a feature line I drew around the perimeter of my pool, laid on the surface EG, and then graded down to an elevation on a slope.

I'd really like to blend all the surfaces together.  Right now, they are all separated with tiny slivers of Existing Ground.

How do I go about this?  As you can see, I'm still pretty green with gradings.

AutoCAD Civil 3D :: Merging Grading Groups

Oct 3, 2013

I'm currently trying to model all siteworks for a project using Civil 3D 2014. I created several grading groups that represent the various pads I need for the general project layout.  Since this was the way I knew how to model the pads, now I have some intersections on the slopes between one grading group and the other. I was wondering if I could "merge" the grading groups in order for them to be just one big pad, that maintains all the levels from the other pads. Here is an image of what I am trying to explain:

What I want to do is to merge the regions circled in red, so that I have only one building pad on my terrain.

AutoCAD Civil 3D :: Volumes / Grading And Surfaces

May 30, 2012

I have an existing topo surface created as well as grading for a proposed elevated pad of earth done in civil 3d 2013. I simply want to calculate the cut and fill quantities. I created the grading with automatic surface creation checked on. When I use volume tools to see what the quantities are, it says 0.0 for both cut and fill.

I created another surface (TIN) and pasted the existing topo surface and the proposed grading surface into it and I couldn't get any quantities.

I created another surface (TIN volume) and set the base surface as the existing surface and the comparison surface as the surface created from the grading but again could get no quantities.

AutoCAD Civil 3D :: Grading Groups And Surfaces?

Jul 8, 2013

I have created several pond embankments using the grading tools and have created surfaces using the grading groups. The problem I am having is when I turn on the triangles for one surface, I get the triangles for all the embankments and EG. The software keeps adding to the EG and doesn't cut out each embankment. I know I'm missing a step but I'm unable to find it.

AutoCAD Civil 3D :: Created Surfaces With Grading Now Have Gaps

Oct 13, 2013

I am trying to create a surface using the grading tool. I have a known top and a designed floor. I extended the floor surface out to meet the top breakline. I then use the grading tool to run a 3:1 down to the pond floor so I know where the true breakline is, but there is almost always a gap or two in my surface. It is usually less than a foot, but it has made my OCD kick in and I am going crazy trying to figure it out. I've traced of the breaklines, and the contours and added them to the surface to try and fix it, but that doesn't seem to work.

AutoCAD Civil 3D :: Merging Corridor Surfaces That Run Parallel To Each Other

Dec 11, 2012

How do I merge 2 corridor surfaces that are running parallel to each other. Due to this being an overlay project the CL will stay the same just raised 4.5" from existing CL and the existing cross slope varies which we are matching until you hit the sawcut. We are not ripping out or milling any apshalt, it is strictly an overlay of the exisitng with 4.5" of new asphalt. We are saw cutting 2' either side of theedge of paveement and matching in with proposed.

I have created a feature line over the existing cl then raised it the required height. the cl has been offset 10 both sides to create my left and right shoulder alignments,  I then created a left and right shoulder corridor assembly which has supplied 2 seperate surfaces. I now would like to merge the 2 surfaces using the raised cl feature line as a break line to create the final proposed surface. I would prefer not to have to create feature lines from my corridor and create a new surface because i would like to take asphalt and subgrade quantaties at the end with out having to hand calc but will if need be.

AutoCAD Civil 3D :: Infill Grading VS Feature Line Grading

Dec 24, 2013

"An infill grading has no criteria applied to it. Any area bounded by feature lines or lot lines that is not already a grading can be converted to an infill grading."

So given an area enclosed by a feature line, an infill grading can be created. Using the same features line, an feature line grading can also be created. what is the difference between these two surfaces? They both have no criteria applied to them.

AutoCAD Civil 3D :: Output Surfaces As XML Files

Oct 26, 2012

I need to export a DTM for use in another package which I previously did by Extracting the Triangles, Selecting the 3D faces & Wblocking to DXF for import to the other package.

The developers of the other package have introduced an XML import which I have been trying out but when the surface is imported into the other package via XML most (but not all) of the triangles honour the original 3D faces.

The question is therefore: Does the XML output contain sufficient information to allow the other package to "join the dots" in the correct way so as to mirror the original 3D faces and thus create an exact copy of the DTM??

AutoCAD Civil 3D :: Surfaces In Multiple Files

Aug 7, 2013

How practical is it to create and manage surfaces across multiple DWG files?  One of the reasons I'm asking is some of our users are insisting their work can only done in a single file, resulting in massive DWG files and naturally, Civil3D slows to a crawl.  I'll admit I'm not a full time Civil3D user or specialist - thats not my job.  I'm reasonably certain it can be done from the most basic of research (which apparently nobody else wants to do...), but am Uncertain what the potential pitfalls are.

They complain of slowness and are requesting better computers from IT (I've talked them down to more RAM).  I'm trying to forestall a potentially nasty political situation spiraling out of control: they get better computers, others will want them as well and either get them only because of connections, or won't get them and are resentful for the perceived lack of importance.  We don't need people doing 2D schematic drawings on gaming rigs.

AutoCAD Civil 3D :: How To Raise Grading

May 9, 2012

Is there an easy way to raise an entire site by 1.0 foot and have the grading hit the previous targeted surface?  The only way I have found is to grab all the feature lines and raise them up by the required amount, but by doing that, the grading bogs down my system and it crashes, plus, I have grading attached to 3dpoly's and not necessarily all feature lines.

AutoCAD Civil 3D :: Grading Subdivisions

Oct 16, 2013

I am working with Civil 3D 2014, I played with 2009 back in 2008 and before that it was Land desktop.  I don't know if I am not following a standard workflow.

Build the EG from contours.Layout the CL for the ROW and convert to a horizontal alignments.Create the profiles.Design the vertical alignment in the profile.Create the assemblies for the different types of road sections.Full profile, pavement width assembly, the curb return assembly, the daylight left / right, 1/2 side left / right, and pavement width left / right.Build the corridor, set the target surface as EG or FG, depending on where the section of the corridor is located. (At the edge of the property to EG, then after the first building pad to FG)This is where I have a thought something is wrong. If I am grading the entire site, why would I have the ROW grade to the EG, when I will need the surface to grade from the ROW to the closest building pads?Create the intersections, using the different types of assemblies, per the ROW sections.Create feature lines and use elevation editor to set all the elevations around the pad.Using the Grading creation tool, grade to surface, using a 2:1 side slope. Then adding an infill to the pad.

I keep having the file crash after grading about 10 lots. I recover and it works find, but then the file runs very slow, and will crash. I haven't taken any classes in Civil 3d, and am looking for one in my area.

I am use to creating the vertical surface then creating points along the CL, TBC, FL, BOW then creating break lines along the points. Then create a break line for the pads, and build the FG contours from these break lines.

AutoCAD Civil 3D :: Grading Against A Retaining Wall

Sep 8, 2012

I have a platform at level 13.275m and nearby there is a retaining wall at aprox. level 4.0m.

For the wall i've made a surface using feature lines from EG till level 15.0m and then pasted into the EG surface to create the 'barrier' for the slope. But when i do the grading with the fill slope projection to surface, when it reaches the retaining wall section, the contour lines go crazy and if i do a quick profile, the fill slope line (obvious) is iregular, rather than a straight down line (2:1)  going from level 13.275m till it hits the EG.

I've attached a picture to show the problem better.

AutoCAD Civil 3D :: Inaccurate Grading Volumes

Aug 29, 2012

I have noticed that the value I get when I use the surface volume comparison tool or look at a graded item in the grading group properties box is different than if I calculate it by hand and the discrepancy isn't even consistant.  After spotting this problem in a job I am working on graded two simple ponds to check this.  The first one is 100' x 100' and 5' deep w/ 2:1 side slopes.  Calculating the volume by hand I get 1500 cu. yds but the grading group properties come up to 1506.17 cu. yds.  The accuracy is off by less than 0.5%  The second pond is 100' x 100' and 2' deep with 3:1 side slopes.  The hand calc gets me 654.52 cu. yds. and the grading group properties reads 655 cu. yds.  This discrepancy is closer to 7%. I really need to know if I can trust the volume tools in the program.

AutoCAD Civil 3D :: Joining Three Grading Objects

I created a pond and left out the grading to surface on the up hill side towards the pad which will be paved one day. I now created two side feature lines to enclose the whole pad and graded by distance and slope.

My problem now is the two side and back seem to blend together as I attached the feature lines together but I can not figure out how to blend into the pond create as it has side slopes to EG and the front which must join to the side slope crest to enclose the pad to drain into the pond.
