AutoCAD Civil 3D :: Infill Grading VS Feature Line Grading

Dec 24, 2013

"An infill grading has no criteria applied to it. Any area bounded by feature lines or lot lines that is not already a grading can be converted to an infill grading."

So given an area enclosed by a feature line, an infill grading can be created. Using the same features line, an feature line grading can also be created. what is the difference between these two surfaces? They both have no criteria applied to them.

AutoCAD Civil 3D :: Grading Object Infill

Oct 9, 2013

I am creating a simple, and although it's large (100 million gallons), the grading object routine is relatively simple.  I have the inside crest of the berm and I'm grading down 40-50 feet.  Everything is fine until I infill the bottom of the basin and then the infill line around the perimeter of the bottom has two points that are way below the actual bottom, like another 100+ feet.  The two points are on opposite sides of the basin so obviously it throws off the whole resulting surface and causes earthwork calculations to be invalid.

I've tried various sizes and shapes, having the crest feature line both "open" (with a tiny gap) and "closed", straight and arc shapes for the crest, grading to elevation and to relative elevation, and probably more.  This problem seems to appear in each scenario.

AutoCAD Civil 3D :: Grading To Existing Surface From Feature Line

Aug 2, 2012

I have an existing surface with a steep slope and a feature line for the edge of a proposed walkway.  I need a buffer of 25m  on either side of the walkway but offsetting doesn't take the grade of the slope into account.  How do I grade down the hill from the feature line at 25m to match to the existing surface?

AutoCAD Civil 3D :: Gaps In Grading From A Single Feature Line

Oct 10, 2012

why I would get gaps in my grading from a single feature line? The feature line is at the same elevation all the way around and I am trying to grade to my existing surface at a 1:1 slope.  No matter what I do it continues to leave out portions of the grading. I have attached a 3d image showing what's going on.

AutoCAD Civil 3D :: Extracting Feature Line From Grading Or Corridor?

Feb 22, 2013

I have grading style set up to create a cut/fill boundary and the same thing for my corridor. I made surfaces from my grading and corridor and no longer need them. I need to keep the cut/fill lines for my design. How can I extract these lines from these objects? I tried keeping the grading/corridor on one layer and lines I wish to use on another so I can turn pieces of the grading off. However, it will not print the cut/fill boundary without printing all the feature lines created from a grading.

I have a polyline (elevation added in via Properties) that I want to convert to a feature line for use in grading but when I try to convert I get the message below

When I check the properties and do a LIST the list reports a negative elevation.

AutoCAD Civil 3D :: Projection Grading Create Segments On Parent Feature Line

Dec 12, 2013

When we apply surface projection gradings to feature lines, we get locked vertices on the feature line wherever the grading transitions from cut to fill. In turn these vertices create segments in the feature line which influence any labels applied to the line. I don't want a bazillion segment labels on my FL. I only want segment labels between the physical vertices and elevation points. Is there a workaround or is an enhancement request in order?

AutoCAD Civil 3D :: 2014 To 2013 Causes FATAL ERROR When Drawing Has Infill Grading

May 23, 2013

We just installed 2014 on two work stations and saved a few Civil 3D files with it. When we try to open these Civil 3D drawings in 2013 they crash with a FATAL ERROR.

The last few lines on the command line shows: Loading Modeler DLLs.

Modeling Operation Error: Operation unsuccessful.

Modeling Operation Error: Operation unsuccessful.

This error seems to only happen with drawings that have infill grading. I tested it with a drawing with just poly lines and it worked fine. I then converted those poly lines into feature lines using 2014 and it opened fine in 2013. I then added an infill to the feature line region in 2014 and it crashes in 2013.

AutoCAD Civil 3D :: Grading From Feature Lines

Aug 15, 2013

I have a created a surface from contour lines.I have drawn a feature line and assigned elevations (it slopes down from 3.5m elevation to 2m elevation). I have added grading from the feature line to the existing surface but have not merged the feature line with the surface.

I also have to make a low area (elevation at 1.5m) on the surface and know i need to grade at 1:1 from the feature line to the low point. Is there a way to grade from a feature line at a given grade (1:1) to a known height (my low point at 1.5m) without drawing another feature line for my low point? Seeing as the height of the feature line varies I can't just offset it at the grade.. I.e. the grade is the constant here.

I will have a few walls and lower / higher areas to grade to. I have drawn the top of my wall and mounds and have assigned them elevations but not sure whether to now make them all feature lines and try to merge with the surface by grading at a set grade or to do some sort of infill.

AutoCAD Civil 3D :: Creating Objects (Feature Lines / Grading) With Naming Template Query

Jun 26, 2012

When creating Feature Lines, I wanted them to be e.g. Step Line 1, Step Line 2, Step Line 3 etc so I amended the name template to suit. I created multiple from objects and the naming convention worked. If I did features individually (as I wanted certain ones in certain sites) it worked for the first feature but reverted back to the default Feature line name on subsequent entry to the dialog i.e. it had "forgotten" the template name just set.

Am I missing something to get this to work correctly or is this how it's supposed to work i.e. useless for individual feature line creation?? This also happens for gradings.

AutoCAD Civil 3D :: Custom Line Type With Grading?

Mar 6, 2013

I have a few custom linetypes created for the cut and fill daylight boundary on a grading and corridor. I have it set up to put these lines on different layers than the rest of the grading. I can turn the rest of the grading off and just have my surface created from the grading and these daylight lines on that are linked to the grading. Everything looks good when I go to paperspace to print, except when I actually print the daylight lines do not. They appear in paperspace but not on an actual hard copy. I do not need the grading, I have tried extracting the lines and deleting the grading. This presents another problem. When I extract the lines the come in as a solid line and I cannot get my custom linetype to show despite changing LT scale, etc. How can I make these lines appear in the fashion I want them to.

Is there an easy way to raise an entire site by 1.0 foot and have the grading hit the previous targeted surface?  The only way I have found is to grab all the feature lines and raise them up by the required amount, but by doing that, the grading bogs down my system and it crashes, plus, I have grading attached to 3dpoly's and not necessarily all feature lines.

AutoCAD Civil 3D :: Grading Subdivisions

Oct 16, 2013

I am working with Civil 3D 2014, I played with 2009 back in 2008 and before that it was Land desktop.  I don't know if I am not following a standard workflow.

Build the EG from contours.Layout the CL for the ROW and convert to a horizontal alignments.Create the profiles.Design the vertical alignment in the profile.Create the assemblies for the different types of road sections.Full profile, pavement width assembly, the curb return assembly, the daylight left / right, 1/2 side left / right, and pavement width left / right.Build the corridor, set the target surface as EG or FG, depending on where the section of the corridor is located. (At the edge of the property to EG, then after the first building pad to FG)This is where I have a thought something is wrong. If I am grading the entire site, why would I have the ROW grade to the EG, when I will need the surface to grade from the ROW to the closest building pads?Create the intersections, using the different types of assemblies, per the ROW sections.Create feature lines and use elevation editor to set all the elevations around the pad.Using the Grading creation tool, grade to surface, using a 2:1 side slope. Then adding an infill to the pad.

I keep having the file crash after grading about 10 lots. I recover and it works find, but then the file runs very slow, and will crash. I haven't taken any classes in Civil 3d, and am looking for one in my area.

I am use to creating the vertical surface then creating points along the CL, TBC, FL, BOW then creating break lines along the points. Then create a break line for the pads, and build the FG contours from these break lines.

AutoCAD Civil 3D :: Grading Against A Retaining Wall

Sep 8, 2012

I have a platform at level 13.275m and nearby there is a retaining wall at aprox. level 4.0m.

For the wall i've made a surface using feature lines from EG till level 15.0m and then pasted into the EG surface to create the 'barrier' for the slope. But when i do the grading with the fill slope projection to surface, when it reaches the retaining wall section, the contour lines go crazy and if i do a quick profile, the fill slope line (obvious) is iregular, rather than a straight down line (2:1)  going from level 13.275m till it hits the EG.

I've attached a picture to show the problem better.

AutoCAD Civil 3D :: Inaccurate Grading Volumes

Aug 29, 2012

I have noticed that the value I get when I use the surface volume comparison tool or look at a graded item in the grading group properties box is different than if I calculate it by hand and the discrepancy isn't even consistant.  After spotting this problem in a job I am working on graded two simple ponds to check this.  The first one is 100' x 100' and 5' deep w/ 2:1 side slopes.  Calculating the volume by hand I get 1500 cu. yds but the grading group properties come up to 1506.17 cu. yds.  The accuracy is off by less than 0.5%  The second pond is 100' x 100' and 2' deep with 3:1 side slopes.  The hand calc gets me 654.52 cu. yds. and the grading group properties reads 655 cu. yds.  This discrepancy is closer to 7%. I really need to know if I can trust the volume tools in the program.

AutoCAD Civil 3D :: Joining Three Grading Objects

My problem now is the two side and back seem to blend together as I attached the feature lines together but I can not figure out how to blend into the pond create as it has side slopes to EG and the front which must join to the side slope crest to enclose the pad to drain into the pond.
