AutoCAD 2010 :: Xref Layers Do Not Print Correctly When Hiding Lines

Oct 24, 2012

I am having an issue with plotting a drawing that includes an xref. I have also included an attachment as reference.

I am working in AutoCAD 2010; I have a drawing that includes another drawing as an xref. The xref is on layer “0” in model space and my titleblock, annotation and viewports are in paper space (layout tab). I am using color dependent plot styles (.STB). The xref is a 3D model created with basic AutoCAD solids representing steel shapes, there are also some line segments representing the steel centerlines. The viewport is a plan view of the 3D steel model, the view is not clipped. Since the xref contains 3D objects when I print the drawing I don't want the “hidden” lines to show up, I accomplish this by setting the viewport shade plot setting to “HIDDEN”.

Here is the problem:

When I print the drawing the xref’s layers do not print correctly but rather take on the properties of layer “0” which has a plot style of “NORMAL” so everything prints in color and with a default lineweight. I want the xref to print using the xref’s layer properties that are defined in the .STB file. One variable that changes the outcome of the printed drawing is the viewport shade plot setting.

If the viewport shade plot is set to HIDDEN the xref prints using layer “0” properties (undesired) and the3D object lines are hidden (desired). See attached Viewport #1

If the viewport shade plot is set to AS DISPLAYED the xref prints using the xref’s layer properties (desired) but the 3D object lines are not hidden (undesired). See attached Viewport #2

The ONLY difference between the two viewports is the shade plot setting, there are no layer overrides and only the xref objects are affected, the objects in paper space print as expected. This only happens with an xref or block. If I bind the xref into the drawing and explode it so the objects are “live” in the drawing everything works fine. Unfortunately I need it to work correctly with an xref.

If I use a color dependent plot style (.CTB) where the .CTB file controls the color and lineweight I am able to achieve the desired results, unfortuneatly my company is determined to use .STB files

AutoCAD 2010 :: Xref Text Mask - Hiding Objects

Mar 5, 2012

I have some xrefs that have text masks that mask out my objects, moved the sort order to rear (back) but they still hide my objects.  Is there any way to simply disable them in the original xref?

AutoCAD 2010 :: Bind Xref Layers To Master Layers

Mar 20, 2012

I am currently updating and coming up with a better system for are plant layout file for AutoCAD. When this project is complete, it will be set up so if someone needs to make a change they can just make a copy of the X-Ref file for the area they will be updating and hand it back in when there done. I will review the updated X-Ref then switch out the old X-Ref file for the updated one.

Problem: the problem I am having is when I am in the master drawing that contains all the X-Ref files, the layers list becomes enormous. There are about 30 to 40 different X-Ref files with 15 layers each. Those 15 layers contain the exact same information but you have to edit them individually.

Question: Is there a way to make the 15 layers in the master effect the corresponding layer in all the X-ref files? For instance, you hide the “Machines” layer in the master and it hides the “Machines” layer in all the X-ref.

Side Note: If you were going to make the suggestion “use Xbind” I’ve tried it and it doesn’t work well because “Xbind” creates a new layer you have to assign to things instead of making the layers relate to one another.

AutoCAD 2010 :: Layers That Come With Xref

Mar 2, 2012

Lets say I have file 1 and files 2,3,4, file 1 contains several layers and is an xref in files 2,3,4.

Can I somehow set a layer to off or frozen in file 1 and it will make sure to be switched off in my files 2,3,4 aswell? I have played around with New VP Freeze but if I add a layer at a later time and files 2,3,4 already have several viewports that doesn't do me very good.

AutoCAD 2010 :: Literal Dim Lines In Xref Drawings

Jan 18, 2013

So, I am working off a site drawing of an 80,000 sq ft production plant that was drawn by some old school drafters using probably AC 14.  Most of the departments are drawn in xrefs.  However, probably 10+ people worked on this project of mapping the plant so nothing is the same.  I cannot describe the frustration of inconsistencies of this drawing.  Alas, my question: some of my xrefs are shown in literal dim lines, what is going on?  When you go to the original xref, the lines are as bright as they always are.  When the xref is in the main drawing, the lines are dimmer than everything else.

AutoCAD 2010 :: Layer Manager Show ALL / Xref Layers But Not In DWG ONLY

Aug 31, 2013

Do the people that develop (anti-endusers ) the upgrades ever think like an end user? Having the Layer Properties Manager set up with default filters that show "ALL" layers or "Xref" layers without a default for "Layers Local ONLY" is so counterintuitive and non-user friendly! This is just another example of how Autodesk has absolutely no regard for the end user.

AutoCad :: Viewports Not Scaling Correctly With Xref?

Feb 3, 2012

I'm running into a problem today setting up a drawing. The drawing has three viewports at different scales all looking at different parts of a model I have xrefed. The problem is that when I set a viewport to 1" = 50' for example, it is really being set to 1" = 50" -- off by a factor of 12. I cannot figure out where this problem stems from, but it is driving me a little crazy at the moment. I can work with it, by setting the scale with this correction factor in mind, but I would rather be able to set my viewports correctly, in case someone uses this drawing later as a go by or to do revision work.

AutoCAD 2010 :: Automatically Print Layers Of Drawing In Separate Sheets In One Go?

Apr 3, 2012

How to automatically print the layers of a drawing in separate sheets in one go?

I wanted to print the layers of a particular drawing each in separate sheet but wondering if there might be an automated way to do so. For example, if I a particular drawing comprise 15 layers then how to print each one of these layers in a separate sheet.

Sure, there might be more than one way to achieve this (like controlling the “plot” feature on the “layer properties manager” but what I’m looking for is an automated way to print all the 15 layers separately in one go.

Software: AutoCAD 2014, AutoCAD C3D, AutoCAD M3D, Revit
Windows 7 (Ultimate 64 bits),

Photoshop :: Hiding Layers

May 20, 2009

I work on computer forensic investigations and I am currently working a case where there is evidence that a person has possibly hidden an image using Photoshop, Gimp, or something. The things I need to know is what image format do I need to be looking for? There were no .psd's on the hard drives but what other formats? Can a .bmp, .,jpg, or .png for example be manipulated with layers, masks, or anything else to conceal an image. Also, I am not a big photoshop user but I need to investigate this further. I will be using Gimp. What would be the process of importing an image and showing the layers. I have tried but failed miserably in working with layers, trying to show different layers, etc.

AutoCAD 2010 :: Hiding Constraints - How To Keep Them From Turning Back On

Jun 7, 2012

I'm trying to find an option to hide all constraints in a drawing, I am familiar with the toolbar option to turn display constraints on and off but my issue is that it's not a permanent toggle.  Every time I change from a paper tab to the model tab or activate a viewport the constraint display is automatically turned on again and I must wait for the constraints and the drawing to generate.  When playing checker I am frequently changing tabs or checking within a viewport, this is adding significant time required to check the drawing.  I have not been able to locate a system variable or command to "freeze" the constraints until I want to see them again.  an option to allow me to turn off constraint displays as I'm desiring or is this a Wish List item for R2014?

GIMP :: Layers Hiding The Copied Image

Nov 23, 2011

I have an image that I resized and that resulted in a gray checker board pattern above and below the original photo. I tried to add another photos above by copying and pasting it but get nothing I can see.

I tried merging visible layers but that did nothing (obviously since the copied photo is not visible).

Specifically I open the second photo, Select > All, Edit > Copy, went to the first image Edit > Paste resulting in a outline box of about the right size but without anything in it. I dragged this to the place I wanted it but I cannot get it to become visible. When I anchored the layer the outline box went away.

I have two layers but the second layer appears to be exactly like the first one.

Edge Animate CC :: Hiding Layers Via Boundary?

Aug 24, 2013

I'm using Edge to set up animations for my portfolio pages.  I'm working on several, but I'm still instinctively using Flash techniques that are different, or don't work with Edge.  I'm trying to set up a kind of 'conveyor belt' with two belts, one on top and one below.  Each belt will scroll and carry a word, and cycle in a loop so the words move back and forth through the machine graphics I have.

Is there a way to 'hide' an object beyond the opacity slider and keyframes/pin?  Once the word is covered by the machine, I want it to disappear, but parts of the word which still haven't been carried inside the machine are still visible, so using the opacity slider is out until the whole word is inside the machine.  But if I try to scale it, the shape changes while parts of the word are still visible.

One solution is to break each word into chunks of 3 letters or so, with individual layers for each cluster of letters.  Then once each chunk is hidden, blink it out.  But before I do that, I'd like to find out if there's a way to make a hard edge, or a boundary, somewhere on the stage, beneath which a specified layer becomes invisible, so that if an object scrolls past that boundary before exiting the stage, it gradually disappears.  Is that possible?  I'd prefer this way, because I plan to animate the 'belts' the same way for smooth scrolling.

AutoCad :: How To Print Plot Plan Correctly

Sep 26, 2012

I need to make an 11" x 17" copy of my plot plan for a propane tank installation. I drew everything out the best I could to scale, however I think I may have chosen the incorrect scale. The original complete area was suppose to show 92' x 234' but my actual proposed area is only in a 14' x 10' area. So when I went to print out a PDF everything was super tiny. The original idea was every 2 cubes/squares = 1 foot.

I've tried several ways to the best of my knowledge to correct the problem even attempting to reduce it to 50' x 100' but I seem to get the same problem where if I choose to print it it wont display the Linear Dimensions I have set (as it will print it out super tiny). I even thought of maybe trying a standard 8.5" x 11" then blowing it up at kinko's but same issue.
