AutoCAD 2010 :: Which Release Can Import .jpg To Trace Over
Nov 1, 2013
I learned Autocad on release 12 and then migrated to r14 and 2001. Nowadays most drafting is done with r14. However I want to be able to insert a .jpg into the drawing
environment and draw lines over it. Specifically, I want to take pictures of Christopher Dressers designs and bring them into Autocad and then trace over them. I feel I will get a huge education into architectural ornament as well as becoming more facile with lines.
I haven't kept up with Autocad's upgrades but undoubtedly the later releases have this functionality. Which one will work?

I'm loving CS6 Illustrator, except for one thing. Image Trace. Here, Adobe seem to have taken away the two most usefull settings from Live Trace, and replaced all the presets with ones that are pretty much unusable. I almost always used either 'Comic Art' or 'Lettering' to trace hand-drawn images, but they're both gone. None of the new settings are good enough, even if I make a custom one. The main issue is that the sliders in Image Trace are for completely different things to those in Live Trace, so it's difficult to translate one set of settings into the other.
With Image Trace, I cannot get the same results as with Live Trace, and so far, have found myself having to have Illustrator CS5 open at the same time as CS6, just so I can get workable traces.
I don't know if it's possible, but is there any way to import the presets from Live Trace, or even the full tool, into CS6, to replace the new Image Trace presets?how to make the equivelant of Comic Art in Image Trace's new settings? This is a close up of a file I was trying to trace, showing the major difference in quality between the two CS versions.
Left: CS5 - Comic Art setting.
Right: CS6 - This is a custom setting, but is the closest I have come to Comic Art thus far.
As you can see, the definition of Image Trace is far lower in quality than Live Trace, giving me one large connected blob of colour rather than the distictly separate lines produced in Live Trace.

Is there a way to import image files and then trace them so you have a .dwg file? I am using autocad LT 2012.

Is there another way to get parts or the whole photograph into ACAD other than inserting the image and then trying to trace it?

I am using AutoCAD 2012. When I use Paste Special to insert and object as an Image Entity AutoCAD shuts down. I used it for years on older versions of AutoCAD with no problems. It is good to use when inserting a PDF into a drawing to trace over the objects for CAD use.

I'm working on pdf image files, 300 dpi, and I want to use the Image Trace tool to vectorized these ones. The result has to be under 4 colors, and the file is a mozaic of photos calibrated 3mm x 3mm.
The purpose is to vectorize the whole image ( composed with approximately 800 photos )I did different tests with the settings of the Image Trace tool with samples of 12 x 12 mm ( 4 photos x 4 photos ) and the result is correct. But when I try to do the same with the entire image, the result is just horrible The entire image is sized 200 mm height and 130 mm width, but the import format is exactly the same than the samlpes I made my presets on.
I was thinking that Illustrator should act the same with the full image than with the small one, it just took more time to calculate the rendering, but apparently not.

how to use Live Trace in Illustrator but now instead of the Tracing Options window having a button that says "Trace" it's now showing a button that says "Set to Default." I'm sure something isn't selected right or something similar, but I can't figure it out. why "Trace" is no longer an option?

I just started using CS6, jumping from CS3. A major tool I use is Live Trace, and I have custom settings for that. I cannot find a way to make Image Trace behave the way Live Trace did for black and white line drawings. The results I get in CS6 are far inferior to those I got in CS3 in terms of retaining the look of the original raster image. Otherwise, I will have to leave CS3 installed just to do my Live Trace.
Here is a sample of what I mean. You can see the quality degredation in CS6 compared to CS3. (And it's much more obvious when it's full size and full resolution.)
My settings used in Live Trace (CS3) were:
The settings I tried in CS6 that gave the above result were:

I am new to GIMP.
I want to import a photo, trace geometric shapes over the photo like circles and lines, and then remove the photo. I have a very basic understanding of LAYERS. I have viewed a few tutorials. But I don't know how to import a photo or how to get rid of it once I have drawn the geometric shapes over it.

If I load a dll file into the autocad (using NETLOUD), and after a while I want to make some changes in the dll, then re-build it. In order to do so, I must close the autocad, otherwise I'll get an error ("Unable to copy file,,, because it is being used by another process..."). There is anyway to release the dll so I can change it without closing the autocad everytime?

I have been revising some older blocks dating back to 2003 and earlier. What was a file size of 28KB increased to 127KB! In most cases the only change was converting text to an attribute. As a test I took a 2004 file and saved it - with no changes - to another name and the file size increased from 28KB to 124KB!!! That's an increase of over 4.4 times! Many of my 1998 - 2006 files are in the 26KB - 40KB range.
That's a bit much of an increase over several ACAD versions! Is there a way to reduce the file size? I did perform a complete Purge before saving. Have I missed some clever trick?
I am running ACAD Version 2014 with SP-1.

I have made a VB.Net Add-In for Inventor 2011, in a few functions it opens one or more files or sets a reference to already opened files. The release of the resource to this documents seems to be the problem.
In PDM (Productstream Pro) we want to change document states and there for the documents have to be closed in Inventor. When using some Add-In functions prior to the state change in PDM, we get a message from PDM that Inventor still has the files open but inventor does not show any open files (of course we can not see files that were opened in the background).
Only manual operation to solve this is to close inventor or open the drawing and the part used on the drawing and close them top down (drawing first, then part).
I'm stuck with open files that don't seem to be open.I think this is because the add-in sets a reference to the part used on the drawing and then changes something in the drawing. How do I release the resources correctly?

I've created a Inventor 2011 Add-In using VB.Net with VS2008.
This add-in does all kinds of things, but it will not release some documents.
Well I don't know that for shure but it looks like that.
We use Productstream Pro and when changing state of a document it says the document is in use while there are no documents visibly open in Inventor. This only occures when I use my add-in.
Exact steps: Load drawing document from PSPPerform action with add-in which gets a custom iProperty from the Part file used on the Drawing and fills the display name of the Drawing with itSave the drawingClose the drawingIn PSP try to change state of the part file used on the drawingGet message from PSP stating the part is in use
In my code I've tried some things to prevent this behavior but non of them work.
I've tried:
Setting unused objects to "= Nothing"Releasing objects using "Marshal.ReleaseComObject(obj)"Calling "m_inventorApplication.CloseAllUnreferencedDocs()" and "System.GC.Collect()" on the "m_appEvents_OnTerminateDocument" event.

Autodesk should provide an easy way to save drawings back to an earlier product release, like an online converter utility for clients etc... I understand that people need to be pushed to get newer products, however by not having an easy way to change a file, it really punishes those who do stay current and get each release. For many years now I find myself drafing in a current release of Civil3d to utilize the latest features that improve work flow, then having to waste a lot of time converting projects back to each clients file requirement.

I run Photoshop CS4 on a Windows PC with 4GB. Even though I frequently
"purge", Photoshop does not seem to be releasing RAM even when all files
have been closed, often holding on to some 2GB RAM. Only when I terminate
Photoshop, the RAM it grabbed is released. This means I would have to exit
and relaunch Photoshop many times a day.

I am new to programming in general, but really new to C#. A little to discribe what I want to do.
I need to creat a command that once I run it, I get to choose an excel file that will be filled with points in a D,X,Y,Z format. (points range from 1-??) I know there are other ways of doing this (importing text ascii) but I need to cut down on the time and steps. This is something I do on a regular basis for people to convert different coordinate systems.
how to do the basics right now, I am just having trouble getting to the point that it will pull the info out of an excel file. I do not have any code right now to share to show my progress either.

I drew some simple paths in Photoshop with the pen tool, then exported the paths to Illustrator. All the paths came into illustrator as compound paths, though they look like simple paths in illustrator. Because they are compound paths, I can't join the ends of the paths to the ends of other paths.
Whe I select one of these paths:
Object>Compound Path>Release is greyed out and unavailable. "Release Compound Shape" in the Pathfinde palette menu is also greyed out and unavailable.
Is there any way to make these paths back into simple paths without redrawing them? I'm using CS6 versions of both Photoshop and Illustrator.
