View 1 Replies View RelatedI can't rotate anything in 3ds Max anymore. The only way I've found is to go via the hierarchy pivot box (left hand menu), which isn't much of a workaround.
The rotate gizmo appears, the pie slice appears, angle numbers change when I drag but nothing moves. Is there a quick way of resetting 3ds to defaults? I presume I've switched something on or off that I shouldn't have!
I can rotate merged objects, just not native ones. I grouped a lorry with a box (I wanted to put a logo on the box for the side of the lorry) - when I rotated the lorry, the box stayed put!
I am trying to rotate 30 degrees along an axis.
In Rhino, it is simply using Rotate3D -> pick your axis of rotation -> type degrees -> enter
In Max, how do I pick an axis rather than world XYZ?

I need to rotate a polygon manually so that one of its vertices snaps to a vertex/edge/face of another polygon. How can that be done?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm using 3DS Max 2012 and am trying to get a cube to rotate around the rotation system of a sphere sitting near by so that the cube looks like it's orbiting the sphere. The problem is that when I go to the coordinates menu and click on Pick, I select the sphere, but the rotation gizmo is still around the cube.
Here's a screenshot to show you what I mean.
See how the sphere is where the coordinates are suppose to be, but they are still around the cube?
How do I make this get around the sphere?
I am trying to model the following simple structure:
I made this example by creating a new polygonal cylinder, rotating the top edges that are to the right of the x-axis and repositioning the affected vertices afterwards, but doing it that way just doesnt feel right, it seems too unclean to me.
I would like the affected vertices to only move on a given axis when rotating the edges, so I dont need to reposition them after the rotate operation. I tried to illustrate what I mean in the following screenshot:
The edges I want to rotate are marked in red, the vertices that are supposed to only move on the y-axis are marked in green. The arrows indicate the desired movement.
Is this way of rotating an edge possible with the rotate tool or something?
1. When I use the rotate manipulator the rotated object scales up in the world Y axis warping the object when rotating. In a prior step I scaled the object in the Y axis. I scaled the object while the tool was set to local. However I've done many times before but never had this issue. I've deleted history, cleanup, etc but nothing works. The channel box shows all scales are at 1. To test the manipulator, I created a cube and rotated it but the cube didn't scale so it must be something with the object itself.
The pictures show the scaling in relation to the rotate tool. I zoomed to place the object exactly within the inner ring. You'll see it grows when rotated.
2. The rotate manipulator is grey or partially grey. The tool works so it's not a locked channel. Since both issues happened at the same time I'm thinking they are related.
3. I can't get the X/Y grid to show on the front view. The grid is enabled on the panel and in the preferences. The front view, shows the plane of the X/Z grid. The side view shows the Y/Z grid. The top view show the X/Z grid.
I'm trying to extrude multiple faces, and then get them to rotate along the center of the object so that they can all sort of have the same angle radiating from the center. In the picture, the one on the top Left is my starting point. I would like to rotate those faces, for example, so that they will all be flat (picture on Right which I achieved through vert snapping to grid) but the only results I can produce are the 2 small pictures on the bottom. =(
Is this possible?
I can't rotate a text box in my XCF file. When I create a new XCF file, I can easily create and rotate a text box.
I've attached the problematic XCF file. See if you can rotate the text box.
This is my i Feature inserted. When I try to insert it and rotate it, the slot and nubs do not rotate. Also, if I try to mirror it over the plane, the slot and nubs do not mirror. It always stays the same direction. I am on Inventor 2011. Also, If I try to rotate it 90 deg, Inventor crashes.

I wish to create a testing surface for simulation from a DSM height data (under a college assignment). I downloaded a height data from [URL]........ in a .dwg file format and want to import in on maya and create a surface out of it.

I'm using 3ds max 2013. Basically I saw in some videos that people were able to see the segmants on a object while in perspective mode. They were NOT in wireframe mode. the lines showed lively on the object.

However the X-Ray option does not look active - it is gray while the rest of the Shading list is in black - and does not let me check the checkbox.

I'm trying to make a door. But my door making tool now starts making the width, y direction in my perspective window instead of in the x direction. I'm using snap to vertex, but it still wants to go the way it wants to. It worked at first, but now now. Any thoughts on what might have changed?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have attached a picture of what it continues to do when I attempt to select a face of this polygon I revolved from a cv curve tool line. Accidentally copied dual screen. I have been running into countless problems while trying to manipulate this revolved surface like a polygon but there is something stopping me. How do I just select an edge or a face without the entire thing lighting up with yellow dots and not actually selecting anything! I try to hold shift and click other faces but that doesn't work either!
If I could somehow delete the action of revolving a line to treat the independent tessellations as one uniform polygon. I am very new to this program and I don't know where history might be.
I am using 3ds max 2014 and have not been able to select faces when using the Unwrap UVW modifier. My only choices are vertex, edge and polygon. I've tried to use flatten mapping with polygons instead of faces, but I'm not getting the results I want that way.
I've made sure that everything is converted to editable poly. I've re-imported everything to see if that changes anything, and still nothing. I'm attaching a screenshot of my unwrap uvw rollout in case that's useful.
I created a very simple two poly object and then deleted my construction history and now I cannot seem to create a new polygon in the scene unless I turn off interactive creation.
If I choose create>sphere etc the little sign that says drag on grid appears but when I do nothing happens. I made a new scene and did the same thing and I don't have the same problem so Im not sure why in this particular scene.
I have a lofted surface and would like to make a difference with another surface.
This doesn't work (Difference returns absolutely the same 2 objects instead of Object1 - Object2).
In the attached example, I would like to have a square "window" in the "wagon" shape.How can I do it ?
I'm having a problem with being able to select inputs in the Chanel box / layer editor ! I am using maya 2012 on a MacBook pro , for instance if I create a cylinder ,when it's created I bring up the Chanel box , I have : pCylinder1 then the boxes for adjusting the xyz axis etc , then shapes / pCylinderShape1 , and that's it ! I have no inputs tab to adjust sub-divisions etc ?? Have I not got something selected
View 1 Replies View RelatedWhenever I try to select a Curve to select 'Control Vertex' I get the options for the Camera instead, the only work around I have is to Hide the Camera which also switches off the image planes, then select the curve and select 'Control Vertex, and then re-enable the image planes.

I have created a sheet metal part, then converted to a solid component to utilize the bend tool. The actual part will need to overlap at the ends and will be joined using spot welds. I would like to be able to illustrate the overlap in the inventor model if possible but how to achieve this.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI am fluent in sketchup modeling but have had no success in attempting to model something similar to the crinkled wall mass in the attached image. I have d/l'ed 3dsmax for 30 trial and trying to learn on the fly, which is difficult. before i spend too much time trying to to achieve a crinkled wall mass? in my first attempt i was able to create a rectangle, add modifer of garment maker and apply cloth attributes (and ripple) to it but it's too smooth around the edges although it had amplitude to it.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm an architecture student who has high interest in 3d modeling.I would like to learn how to design something in a very organic form for a change.I can model very accurately and fast what I need on Autocad most of the time, but it seems like autocad 3d modeling is not the best tool to be using for modeling something very curvy and random.

So Basically, I want to be able to first sculpt the general exterior form I have sketched out or in my mind, and not only that, I would like to model the interior portions so I can have renders from inside the building. (Like the ons from the examples)
Although in architecture, 3D modeling comes into play after the 2d drafting, I don't think it's the same case for organic shapes. I would have a general layout sketched out on paper how the building would be formed, but not necessarily accurately measured. Then I would model the building to cut the sections through, and extract them out along with floor plans thus creating a very accurate orthographic drawings as well as gorgeous renders.or just poly edit with soft selection and other modifiers?
