3ds Max :: Alpha Maps Always Have Whitish Border
Mar 22, 2013
No matter what I do to my maps and alpha channels, I always have a whitish border. It isn't necessarily noticeable, but it is especially noticeable with darker backgrounds. I want it gone completely. I have tried diluting the pixels around the map edges. Doesn't work.

PDN is an amazing tool. The issue I'm having is that when I try to create a partially transparent texture for use in Unity 3D, I get a gray border inside of Unity that is not visible in Paint.net. It appears to be a well-known issue, and there are lots of instructions, video tutorials, etc. for how to deal with the problem when using Photoshop.
See the following post for more information: [URL] .....
The basic theme of the solution is that you need to create a "proper" alpha channel and not rely on the "checkered background" that exists in Photoshop. Is it possible to achieve the same thing with Paint.net?

I would like to know if I can import my AutoCAD 3d file into 3DS MAX, with the lighting maps and material maps intact. This is because I am doing my thesis on AutoCAD 2011 but I would like to use 3DS Max to do a walk through video.

Here I have 2 pics.
Pic1: I simply use NVIDIA plugin to make it look kind a "3 D" or it's crafted out of wall.
Pic2: I scanned from an art book (a real sculpture).
I am not trying to get the pic1 to have all the thickness, depth like in pic2, how to change color on pic1 from gray to whitish like on the pic 2.

any difference between alpha layer and alpha channel? I mean has to be right? I just don't know what exactly that would be if there is. I'm trying to figure out some more stable uses for computer graphics when building textures with alpha layer or alpha channels. So far I get a flicker from opengl bug when using alphas. So I'm wondering if I use Alpha layer and something with a solid color underneath the geometry if I could achieve a more stable result where alpha sorting. Possibly clearing it up where my alpha layered geometry stays on top vs bleeding through at times it seems.

I have a drawing that has a white background.
I would like to add more to the white background to make it bigger without having to stretch it and distort the image.
I want to place a circle shaped outline border around the original image with a set border thickness and color and be able to crop/remove the portion of the image beyond the outline, changing it from a square/rectangle image to a circular image.
If I am not able to change the drawing to have a round outer border from square, how can I make the outer parts past the newly created circular outline transparent?

how to add refletion to a material. In Cinema 4d I can simply click and reflection and adjust the parameters and i have it, but 3ds max is more complicated and has more things. So i go to "maps", check the box for "reflection", than i have to choose a map. But i want a map that gives me total reflection everywhere, no falloff or things like that. What map do i have to choose?

So I somehow managed to add multiple libraries to my material editor. I think I didn't realize they were added so I kept adding them. Now I want to delete them because I'm not using them, and they just get in the way for when I'm trying to get to the default maps.
Here's a screen shot....

I have installed LR4 X64 on a brand new Windows 7 ultimate laptop. I can't see the maps. I have updated to LR4.1 RC still can't see the maps. I have checked the firewall logs and added LR to allowed programs. Still no luck. I have turned the firewall (Windows) off. Still no luck. All other app access the internet OK. Other features in LR can access the internet OK, e.g. ftp to my website. I have searched google and this seems to be a problem for others with the X64 version.

trouble applying a displacement filter to my flattened images. I think i know how to create the displacement map. I right click on any one colour channel; duplicate it; save as a new channel; and save this new b&w image as my disp. map.
But then i go back to the image that i want 'displaced', click on the appropriate layer, go to Filter>Distort>Displace, click OK on the little dialog box and then open the previously created disp. map. Then nothing happens.
i have CS3 Production Premium installed.

I've made a model I'm content with - editable poly, and have added a UVW Map modifier and Unwrap UVW and subsequently rendered the UVW, taken it into photoshop and done what I would like to it then brought it back in as a diffuse material - all worked fine.I'm going to be using the asset in a prototype game so want to decrease the number of triangles rendered. So to decrease the polygons I've added an Optimise modifier. This is great for decreasing the number of polygons, but unfortunately as it changes the underlying geometry, it appears is mucking up the UVW coordinates and my material is all over the place.
What is the correct process or technique to decrease the polygons and preserve the UVW map appearance on the object, which was set on the higher res version? I've tried changing the modifyer stack order but as the shape has a number of irregular surfaces, the unwrapped UVW in peel mode is a real mess and would be extremely difficult for me to texture with any consistency.

I have a model with jpg textures.
I renamed all the textures to tif textures and now 3ds Max tells me that there are still missing jpeg textures.
I followed the tutorials on the web to fix these issues : I mean by using the material/map browser but I can't find the "root Only" checkbox that is in 3ds Max 2009.
How can I display all the maps used in the scene ?

Im trying to merge 2 maps together so that I can combine the info from the 2, unfortunately one of the maps has been adjusted to the curve of the earth while the other is flat. I've been able to get it fairly close with the perspective tool but I was wondering if theres any way to make it match points on the maps to merge them down to the same size and shape so that they flat map has the same curve as the other map.

I'm new to AutoCAD, and especially new to AutoCAD Map 3D. I need to make a plat showing a well location. When using Petra or DrillingInfo, a map can be printed to a DXF. DrillingInfo puts out a DXF with just the 0 layer, and the well spots come in as polyline circles. The DXF Petra puts out opens with different layers and symbology, which I like. It's just that the well spots are blocks, which I do not understand. When I open the Petra map with AutoCAD Map 3D, my well spots are unitless block references, and are tiny specks. I need to resize them so they can be seen.

After just reading all 146 messages in the topic, "No more ImageReady in CS3 - VERY FRUSTRATING", I am seriously bummed, but left with unanswered questions.
Specifically, has anyone found a cheap, practical alternative for creating simple image maps with polygonal click regions? I want to create an actual map, where you click on a city name and go to a web page on that city. Rectangles do not work, as the real world regions are not shaped that way -- it has to be polygons. Nor do I want the map to be physically sliced apart and reassembled with table elements. I just want to use the HTML map
and area tags.
Photoshop 7 (my last version) could do this simple, useful task. My Photoshop CS3 "upgrade" cannot.
creates simple map & area image maps -- or perhaps an add-in or standalone? Something other than a $300 piece of otherwise useless (for my purposes) bloatware.

What I am looking for is some sort of plugin that takes the tediousness out of it and lets you preview it in realtime.
An ideal plugin would be able to do the following:
-view the source image - image to be displaced.
- View composite image preview(what you see in photoshop when the disp map is applied)
- View Displacement Map preview - hopefully these would be side-by side
I have an image of a face, and an image of text and I want that text to look like it is wrapped onto the face.
Select the face image (ctrl-A) & open the plugin. THis becomes the composite (preview) image
Next to that is the Disp. map. In this case I would check a box that says "use composite as displacement map" It would greyscale the image of the face, and that would be the height/depth disp. map whihc I could then fine tune.
Next to that would be where the image to be displaced is. I open up the image file of the text.
Now I see in the "Composite image" the text wrapped around the face, following the contours of the face. I can adjust the levels of the disp map to create a more dramatic or more subtle effect. WHen I'm finished I click OK.
The "file to be displaced" (in this case, the text image) can also be "same as composite"
If you have ever seen this image where it looks like a photo of a crowd taken from above, but it almost looks liek the height of the people forms Bill Clintons face, this is what this would be used for.
The composite would be the photo of the crowd. The disp map is the photo of clinton's face. SInce the displaced image and the Composite image are the same (via checkbox), you just hit apply after adjusting your disp map. It applies the disp map to the selected original image, and the lights & darks displace the original and give it that look that I just described.
- click to open a source file for the disp. map. - ideally I would be able to open even a color jpg, and it would convert it to greyscale upon opening in the plugin window.
- ability to use the selection (preview composite image) as a displacement map rather than saving & opening it up
- invert the greyscale disp map.
- ability to adjust levels of the alpha/disp map in the preview window in order to darken the darks, etc.
- ability to resize/rescale the dispmap in the preview window. THen in realtime or close to realtime I would see the results in the Source Image preivew window. This way I can shrink or grow the disp map to fit my selection if need be
- Ability to grab the disp map and move it around in order to precisely line it up against the preview image

I've been using Blender a lot recently, and, not wanting to front the money to buy a Normal Map generation program or (oh dear) use GIMP of all things, I decided to try creating a Normal Map in Paint.NET.
What is a Normal Map, you ask? Normal Maps are images that are used in conjunction with a texture to give the texture false 'depth', allowing, say, light to shine onto the bricks in a texture while not getting into the cracks between, or making light come from a specific side.
The original texture:
The normal map:
The result:
Not the best, as you can clearly see.
How could I make improvements? Is this even practical?

I've recently started using Map 2011 and am not happy with the new ribbon. Most of the commands that I use for setting up my maps seem to have been removed from the ribbon. Is there a way so that the ribbon set up from Map 2010 can be used in 2011? I just got used to the layout in 2010 and then everything changes.
