Revit :: Creating Custom Annotation Symbols
Jul 29, 2012
We have just made the switch to Revit 2013 and the first order of business is creating a template. I, as is my entire office, is learning as we go. I have followed the No Experience Necessary Revit book which was fantastic.
Now, at the beginning of creating my template I am stuck.
I edited the elevation marker and saved a new copy into my standards / prototype folder on my server. I customized it to look just like our CAD elevation marker, great...
I have the family loaded in the template.
Now when someone clicks on the elevation marker in the ribbon how do I get it to load mine instead of the default Revit one? Otherwise, I know I am going to find inconsistencies on our drawings as staff goes to that button.

I'm in 2006 Map and 2006 LDT
I've had a custom RomanS.shx for the past 15 years that has additional symbols in it that are not in the standard one.
For example:
%%150 = Centerline
%%130 = Delta
%%133 = Property Line
%%201 - 210 = Roman Numerals, and more.
They work great in old style single line text, but they have never worked in MText. I just get a question mark, until last week. The centerline symbol showed up in a piece of text imported from an outside DWG, but I could not figure out how. I could not see what code was there, it totally stumped me, but it got me thinking. Is it possible?
How I can get these characters to show up properly in MText? And not the symbols that are in there via the U+ codes. They look so different than romans that I can not use them.

How do you set an object's annotation, say a line, to display a line's angle or bearing precision to the nearest 20th second.
Kinda like this for decimals:
0.000
0.00
0.0
But for degrees minutes seconds.
Also, I will require the seconds to hide if the nearest 20th second was a 00. I also need a leading zero for minutes if the minutes was under 10 minutes.

I'm looking to do sort of an adaptive annotation thorugh vb.net.
Essentially i'd like it start with a leader and instead of your normal text dial that appears, you get a box to punch in values in a grid. 5 columns across, as many as two rows.
The idea being if i punch in 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 in the first six boxes all 5 in the first row appear with boxes around each number and then only the 6 has aa box around it on row 2.
I can see it as a table 5x2, and the format option being if the cell has text, the border type is outline. Although i don't think those options exist for inventor.

If you have a large project and many outside walls have large sections that are the same can you create exterior dimensions on a number of different levels that are tied together. In other words they are the same annotation done once for all those levels without cutting and pasting or doing the same dimensioning on the different levels, which is very error prone and the chances of different dimsions showing on different levels that are supposed to be the same is very large.
I am thinking of something like bing able to x-ref the dimensions like you can do in autocad. Is anything like this posssible in Revit?

I am used to Autocad Architecture where I typically detail out my sections. I show the top and bottom plates, gypsum wallboard, beam sections, ACT tile layout, etc...
In Revit, the annotation scale seems to be too small to make it look good. I just get thick lines at 1/4" scale - looks sloppy. I have detail set to fine, but it does not seem to do anything until I set the scale to 1-1/2"=1'-0" or greater.
How to actually take a section from start to finish on the sheet. Everyone just shows how you put the section mark down and it automatically creates a section view.... Thats great but there is a lot more to do in my mind, I think I know how to add the callouts and annotation but it does not seem very good if I am not pointing at the insulation or pointing to the beam, etc.

How to create a consistent annotation scaling of text and dimensions in a layout drawing in paperspace?
How to update dimensions/annotations scaling in modelspace to create consistant scaling of annotations for an entire drawing that has annotations that have different/inconsistent scaling (arrow size text heights all differ slightly)?

Alright I am trying to create a shape made up of tons of instances of a symbol (best example of what I am trying to achieve is here )
I hoped I could just use draw inside mode and the symbol sprayer however I am not able to ensure the instances don't colide and that they actually completely fit inside the shape without being cut off.
I am obviously going about this the wrong way but have searched for unsuccessfully for any instruction on how this could be achieved.

I've had a request from on of our users to replicate something that has been done for years in 2D CAD. They want a marker to show changes in floor levels that look something like this:-
The annotation needs to be able to read the slab on either side of the step marker and hopefully if possible the difference be represented as text. The datum levels are secondary and it is really the depth of the step that seems to be more important. I do however want to avoid these being just dumb text as if/when the design evolves someone will forget to modify the text.
Here is an example of a few showing two steps in the slab and the results we would want.
I have tried loading/nesting a standard spot level in thinking if I had two in an annotation that this might work, but I was unable to even place a spot marker within the family which makes some sense I suppose.
Is this even technically possible...? I realize the origin usually determines what hosts the family and how, but I guess we are looking for something with a double origin, which is why I think this may not be possible...?

we have this issue that has affected us in Revit 2011 and 2012. For many of our families we have a 3D object, a 2d representation of symbolic lines, and then some editable text/annotation:
- The text is a Generic Annotation annotation family, with a single label, set to display the parameter "Text Frame"
- This family is then inserted into the family of the specific object being created, with, under label's Type Properties, the "Text Frame" of the label being linked with a "Text" parameter in the object family.
This seems to work all fine and dandy, however, we're getting an interesting problem: after working in the file for a while some percentage of the annotation on these families disappear in a view. Sometimes it's just a few, sometimes half, sometimes all of them just go away (everything else, including the symbolic lines, are still there). If you close the file and re-open, they will re-appear. If you nudge them, they will re-appear. Other views may still have them, at least for a time... then they too will dissapear.
This happens both on screen and, dangerously, during printing. You print a whole set, only to discover much of your annotation for objects is gone... (not to mention the cost and waste of trees when you re-print).
Is this a known problem (search only turned up one thread on this), or is there another way to do what I want (have editable annotation on a family) that avoids this issue and I stubmled onto the improper way of doing it?

I would like to embed a tag as generic annotation within a family so that I can control the visibility of the tag based upon a type shared parameter within the family. However, when I rotate or mirror the family the text and labels within the tag change positions, go backwards, flip upside down, no matter what combiniation of "Keep readable" and Rotate with "Rotate with component" I try.I would like to have the tag look, regardless of which direction the family is facing. How to either:
1. Make the embedded generic annotation maintain the correct orientation
2. Control a tags visibility based upon a shared parameter within the associated family?

I'm creating Annotation for pipe diameter on a water main atlas. I have spans of pipe that are 50-200 feet in length. I often don't want the Annotation for pipe size to be placed at the midpoint of the line segment. I'd prefer it to be placed at the location where I 'select' on the feature. It seems like .LAGELPT, .CENTER, AND .CENTROID all place Anno at the midpoint of the line. X1,Y1 places Anno at the start of the line. X2,Y2 places Anno at the end of the line.
Is there an Expression String or Property I couldspecify, that would place the Annotation at the point where the feature was selected on-screen?

I'm trying to create a macro which will attach a custom sketched symbol with a leader to some specific parts in a view. By modifying some sample code I managed to create a macro which will attach the sketched symbol to the currently selected edge (see code below). However I would like to select the view and let the code cycle trough all the parts and check the filename or a custom iProperty. If the filename has a certain pattern or a specific custom iProperty exists it should add the sketched symbol. I don't really see how I should do this, I can get a reference to the selected view and as far as I can see I can use the referencedfiledescripter to open the assembly and cycle through the occurences. However I don't see how I can use this to add the sketched symbol to the occurence in the drawing view.
' Set a reference to the drawing document. ' This assumes a drawing document is active. Dim oDrawDoc As DrawingDocument Set oDrawDoc = ThisApplication.ActiveDocument ' Set a reference to the active sheet. Dim oActiveSheet As Sheet Set oActiveSheet = oDrawDoc.ActiveSheet ' Set a reference to the drawing curve segment. ' This assumes that a drwaing curve is selected.
[Code] ......

I have an annotation family with about ten different types built into it. When I import this into a project, the Arrowhead option (in the Type Properties) of each type is set to 'none'. I do not see anywhere in the family editor to set that value to 20 Degrees Filled. Is there a way to accomplish this, or must I set the arrowhead values each time I load a tag (which seems absurd and redundant).

I work all across the country with different architects and engineers on a contract basis. Typically I create a custom menu that reflects each clients colors, symbols, layering ect. But now I have just upgraded to Acad 2012 and don't know how to create a custom menu in 2012 for each client. Is it even possible? What I have found is the customize button but when I modify a command for a specific client it makes the same change for all clients, as all that I was doing was modifying a workspace, and only modifying the command. What I have done in the past is to take the Acad.mns and copy it and rename it client-name-Acad.mns and make the necessary changes that the clients standards required. Can I still do something like that?

I am currently working on creating new symbols. Now I want to keep the look of the symbol (see attached) but I want all the text to be automated as the text is currently "prompted entry".
Now when I go into the edit the text within the symbol sketch, I need the "view label properties" from the drop down menu but its not there! Is there a way that I can get the "view label properties" into the drop down menu??? What I am after is to attach this symbol to a view and the symbol will automatically show the name of the view and the scale.
OR........ If there is any way that I can get default view label to look like my symbol?

I am in the middle of creating a library of symbols that I will need in a drawing. I have created around 10 symbols so far and I thought I'd insert them to see what they look like. When I drew them, all the lines were very smooth and they looked very neat but when I inserted them into the drawing they came out looking horrible with sharp lines and hatching going into areas which I closed off with boundaries. Also the text has changed on some of the symbols from the standard font to a very thin ugly looking font. A couple symbols which I have made into dynamic blocks no longer has the dynamic element to them so I cant stretch them as needed. Any know why this is happening? Or how to fix this?? When the symbols are being inserted it says "the definition has been changed"

We have a problem in some of our views (mostly dependent views), Central file.We place normal annotation text (not littera) and everything looks fine.
Then it happens, random can take days, and noone tuch the views nor the text style, that the text duplicate itself up to 1-4 times, and also change its location on the view.(The text don't lie on each other, but spread around the view, but keeps the condition in location to each other from the origin texts that was placed)
When we have encounter this we have deleted the copys and placed the text right again and then it works for a while...everything repeats itself, and in the end (random timeflow) the text deletes itself completely.

I'm an Archicad User and I'm evaluating Revit at the moment as I'm interested in a better integration with other Autodesk products.I have two questions though that Google and the Docs couldn't answer me.
1- I have an Annotated Region (a polygon), how can I annotate an angled measure of an edge? I've tried the aligned dimension tool and this link: URL....
2- What's the proper way to join a point of an edge to another edge without changing the length? (somehow to 'rotate' an edge around one point and 'snap' the other point to another edge). I'm using a circle tool and snapping to intersection at the moment.
Also, I know this isn't the best place to ask, but is Revit worth the change? I mean, i'm completely satisfied with Archicad and so far Revit isn't very intuitive at all and the workflow seems it's never going to be on-par with Archicad, I'm considering the change solely for the fact that Revit may have a much better integration with AutoCAD, AutoCAD MEP, and other Autodesk softwares.

I have an AutoCAD dwg file that I would like to import into a Revit generic annotation .rfa file. It's a logo file that we're trying to use for a titleblock. It was originally made into a dwg from an EPS file. I would redraw in Revit but when I try it I get the 'line is too short' error. So it goes.
My problem is this- when I set a RGB value in the AutoCAD file, then import it into Revit with the option to preserve colors, it doesn't show the same color I assigned. I know there are some issues with converting ACAD colors to Revit colors.

I´m designing a sheet, but I've been running into some issues. First of all, I have some symbols on my view to describe some elements. I've been trying to add them to the sheet in a description table but I can´t copy them...is this possible or I would have to draw them again. Here is where I ran into another issue, cause those symbols are made with some styles of line that are not uploaded on my sheet, I went to Manage -> Additional Settings -> Line Styles and defined the new lines, but when I draw'em I can´t choose the new style, only the ones previously uploaded..

I am trying to produce a Camera symbol to indicate the position of where a photograph has been taken on a site plan. I also want to be able to rotate the symbol to indicate the direction of the view and further to have a horizontal tag that shows the photograph number. Therefore I have been trying to create two families, a Camera Symbol and a Camera Tag so that the former can rotate and carry other information such as Date, Title etc., whilst the later needed to be kept horizontal. In trying to do this I started trying to create a 2D Model Family for the Camera but you cannot, it appears, to create a 'filled region' in a model family but it does appear that you can have a Symbol imported into the family. This I have tried to do by creating a Camera Symbol but when imported it remains invisible despite the visibility setting for annotations being set to visible. Since an annotation cannot reference an annotation, is there any way that I can create a Camera Symbol that does what I wish? I feel that I might be missing something fundamental.

I'm currently looking into switching from Vectorworks to Revit due to a job application I'm being offered. What I really want to know is if the following floor plan is possible to make in Revit. I just want floor plans to be with color to better show the different things on it and make them more clear.
I also want to know if it is possible to show symbols in a plan view other than just a rendered hidden line view of the 3D part of it, so I can have a simplified version for the plan view and a detailed object for the 3D. Like you have a 2D-plan component for the plan views and e 3D component for all other views.

We have a Revit Ar 2011 project that is well along in the modeling process and we have noticed that recently elevation symbols do not display on the cursor while placing. Once the elevation tag has been placed it displays normally. Basically, you are operating somewhat blind until the item is placed. Then you can see it in order to modify the orientation and such.

I've seen umpteen explanations of how to change lineweights in Revit.None of them address this simple thing I'm trying to do.
I just want to:
1. Create a few lilnestyles that appear along side the other line styles - for instance:
Thin Line, Medium Line, Thick Line, <<Really Thick Line, >> <<Absurdly Thick Line,>> etc, etc..
2. Draw a line
3. Click on the line
4. Select from a drop down list, "Absurdly Thick Line" and have it instantly inherit the linestyle I created.
The only way I can do this is to create a family, make a new subcategory of Detail Items, create the characteristics I want in the line, export it as a .dwg file, then import it into Revit - and then I see the new line style along side the other line styles, and I can then select any line and make it the new line style.
Certainly, there is an easy to find, simple, straightforward way to add line styles to the existing group - and have those new line styles become immediately accessible from the "Modify Lines" Linestyle Drop down Menu.
