Photoshop :: Non Destructive Burning = Different To Regular

I want to use the burn tool for a special effect but I want to do it on a new layer, I've read all about making a new layer set to overlay mode with 50% grey but this produces a different effect than when I burn the backround layer.
When using burn>highlights>15% on skin colour I get a grey kind of burn which is perfect but it destroys the pixles but when using the non-destructive method I get dark red effect which is not what im looking for.
I'm not using the burn tool in the typical sense (to darken part of the picture) I use the highlight/midtone/shadows seperate to create a very specific special effect with the burn tool.

I'm thinking if there is a way to get photoshop somehow to apply a filter on a shapelayer, which will apply the filter on the layers beneath It's similar to applying effects on a 0% filled layer, exept in stead of effects I need to use filter (Spherize filter to be exact)!

when using the above Image Enhancement it is recomended that a persom use Smart Ohjects! Why not just a new layer on top of your Photograph?

I've wrapped my head around how to reclaim the stripped-out portion of an image that has been non-destructively cropped in CS6: click the image with the crop tool, or select Reveal All from the Image menu. Short of doing this every time I suspect that I may have cropped an image, is there anything in Photoshop's interface to tell me at a glance if the image has been non-destructively cropped? I guess I could check the document dimensions in the pop-up status display at the bottom of the window, but I'm looking for something more direct that doesn't make me search.

Is there any way to put a non-destructive cap on color saturation, the way you can shelf frequencies above or below a certain level in audio engineering?
In other words, an adjustment layer that would limit all saturation values over X to.. well.. X.
Example : Let's say we set it to 80% max. Pixels with saturation levels of 80 or below remain untouched. Pixels with saturation levels over 80 are re-adjusted to 80.
(Simply lowering the saturation levels via an adjustment layer will lower everything, including portions that are already below the desired cap. We don't want that.)

I hope that there would be an option in the future to crop an image in lightroom, then when you open to "edit in photoshop" the image would be cropped using photoshop new non destructive crop. So that i can tweak color and retouch the whole image then close and i can do final cropping back in LR.

I can't just accept something cause it's the way it is. I like to know the reasoning behind it.
Case in point:
Why does the check box say "Non-destructive breakline?" Why doesn't it say, "Erase tin lines that cross boundary?" I doesn't seem to have anything to do with breaklines. Or am I wrong on that one?
While I'm on a roll, double negatives send me into a tailspin. Like "Disable description keys", True or False. Huh? Why not just say, "Description Keys", on or off?

When adding data to a surface, there is the option to add it as a "Non-destructive" breakline. [URL] .....
What is this good for? I created a surface, copied it, and created a volume surface between the two of them. As expected, the resultant volume was 0.
I then draw a 3d polyline and snapped to elevations on the surface. I then took that 3d polyline and moved it up 5'. I then added that breakline to the surface as a "Non-destructive" breakline and the resultant volume between the original surface and the one modified with the new breakline was still 0. Absolutely no change was made to the actual surface, it just added additional triangles.
I'm trying to find a reason it's even option and I'm coming up blank. There has to be SOME reason it's there.

I installed CS4 because it seems I downloaded both the regular version AND the 64-bit version of CS4. I discovered this because I have both an Adobe Photoshop CS4 directory and an Adobe Photoshop CS4 (64 Bit) directory. Can I clean this up?? .... if it is not necessary, I'd like to free up the disk space.

have installed the latest PS Update and all my other software is kept uptodate. I am creating a logo here:[URL]...can reproduce this everytime just by changing fonts (scroll through lots of fonts first) or by applying brushes quickly

Since joining Photoshop CC I have been locked out on a regular basis. Each time, I am asked to sign in again and register, even though the registration page is fully filled out. This has happened three times in the last week. It isn't a matter of not paying the monthly fee...the payments show up in my account. Yet, each time, I get a message that my 'trial version' has expired. Except, I never downloaded the trial version. As I understand it, if you don't pay, you get a couple of months before you are locked out. Yet, here I am, fully paid up and locked out at least once a week. It's no big deal to sign in again but winter is coming and where I am, we regularly lose internet, sometimes for a week at a time. I also travel to remote corners of the globe. What am I supposed to do if this happens when I am cut off from the internet.

I am making some buttons to be used in a regular html setup. Well I have this problem that I dont know how to get around. I have star shapes that I want to be "buttons". Except when you go to click on them, the transparency part of the image is clickable also. How can I make it so the transparent 'box' around the image isnt clickable. I just want the star to be.

I am trying to create a circle that has torn, jagged looking edges but can't figure out how to do it. I thought I could apply a brush but they are greyed out. The brushed do work when I hit pen and draw a freeform circle but then the circle is not perfect.

I have both Photoshop CS3 and CS5 installed on a Windows 7 64-bit system. Photoshop CS5 has two Helvetica fonts: one TrueType and one Type 1. The TT version only offers italic and bold italic styles. The T1 font offers the full suite of bold, italic, bold italic (or oblique), and medium (or regular). This seems odd, but it's sufficient. Photoshop CS3, on the same computer, only offers me the Helvetica TT font, with just the two styles mentioned above. Why can't CS3 see the T1 Helvetica? Why does the TT Helvetica only show me two styles? In case it's relevant, I believe the Type 1 version is the only one I deliberately installed, and I recently upgraded to a 2010 version of the font made available by Adobe.

I had finished working on a b&w photo when I saw an area that needed to be burned in. However I was unable to do it, I assume because a layer or something was in the way. One of my authors is asking for a picture of a strip of film negative that looks as though it has been burned in the middle. I can get the film strip quite easily, but can I create a burned look in Photoshop? I've been through all the effects that I can find but can't work out if I can create the look I'm after... I know there are zillions of tutorials on making burning texts and logos out there but the ones I found allways make things burn on a black (or dark) background using the wind effect.
Now, if I am right wind takes the brighter pixels and blow them into the darker ones. If you have a white background and black text the wind effect isn't working, couse it will give the effect of a burning background. The idea of using the wind effect is to make the flames come out of the text NOT go into it, right?

Roboto font (by Google) is installed on Windows 7 system, but the regular weight is missing in Photoshop, Illustrator and Indesign (both CS6 and CC, and same issue in Windows 8).

All weights are installed properly, the only one not listed in adobe programs is Roboto-Regular.ttf.
