Photoshop :: Linear Mode Different In 32bit Than 8bit?

Apr 5, 2012

We are rendering raster passes in cg which need to be added together to reassemble a beauty render. The layer blending mode being used is linear dodge. There is a dramatic difference in the result in 32bit mode compared to 8bit mode.We normally work with adobergb1988 color workspace.

What is the math being used in 8bit mode with the adobergb colorspace? The problem is similar with sRGB profile. If set up a linear color workspace icc the 8bit mode behaves just like 32bit mode. However no one in our facility nor our clients wants to work with a custom linear icc profile.I would like to preprocess the layers while in 32bit mode to compensate for the gamma space processing of sRGB or adobeRGB color profiles in 8bit mode.Ive tried simply using a exposure node with gamma 2.2 but this is clearly not right.

Photoshop :: Camera Raw Only Offers To Open 16bit Raw Files In 8bit Mode

Aug 9, 2013

I am using a windows CS6 Bridge => Camera Raw (8.2) => CS6 Photoshop (13.0.1 x64) to try to open various 16-bit raw files (.dng, .nef, .arw) which Bridge sees as 16-bit, but only an 8-bit version makes it into photoshop.

How do I convince Camera Raw to do its job?

Lightroom (4.4) is able to export a 16-bit .psd which sort-of-works but shouldn't be necessary.

Photoshop :: Math Behind Linear Dodge (add) Blending Mode?

Mar 17, 2013

Simply adds the two components. But this is only correct if there is no transparency involved.

Once there is transparency involved, it gets more complex. So, what is the math behind the linear dodge blending mode if the top layer has semi-transparent pixels (=alpha less than 1)?

I can set it in view mode to linear, but then all my video shows as linear too, plus, as soon as I leave the view mode, it all goes back to video, and my EXR's are too dark then..... what can I do?

Photoshop :: 8bit Vs 16bit On New Pallette Dialog

Jul 9, 2004

involving the choice of creating a new image with 8bit or 16bit color depth.

If I'm about to create a new logo or image of some sort my first impulse is to use the highest of the 2 (8 or 16).

I know it has to do with the amount of color information in each pixel so I grab at the highest number... is that impulse reasonable? Striving for the highest quality? Or is there a point of diminishing "perceivable" results?

I have also noticed that some 3rd party filters do not work when in the 16bit mode so that "might" be a drawback I suppose.

Also - I can set my monitor to 32bit color - and do - yet PS stops at 16bit... what is the reason for this please?

Photoshop :: Lighting Effect Filter In CS6 With A 8bit RGB File

Aug 24, 2012

I've read all over that the filter only works with an 8bit/RGB file, which my file is, so I don't understand what the problem is.  I am attempting to light a smart object (3d bevel and extruded text) that I created in illustrator, and thought that I might just need to rasterize the smart object before the filter would work, but even after I render it and or flatten the image, merge visible, I still don't have the option to use lighting effects!

Photoshop :: Opens 8bit TIFF Files As Camera Raw?

Dec 6, 2012

My normal workflow consists of opening RAW files in ACR, making adjustments, then moving on to Photoshop where I apply retouching and build clipping paths. I then save the file as an 8bit TIFF. I rarely reopen these 8bit TIFFs again, but when I did so recently what I encountered was not what I expected.

My Photoshop (CS6) is opening 8bit TIFF files as Camera Raw when selected by "right click" followed by "Open with Photoshop CS6". I remember being able to open 8bit TIFF files directly in Photoshop, but I think this change has occurred since installing CS6.

Again, files in question began as 16bit Raw files, but were worked on in Photoshop CS6 (retouching) and saved with clipping paths. This would reduce them to 8bit files. When placed in page layout, clipping paths work properly, confirming that paths are intact.

When I want to open the files again - say from Bridge or a Finder window - by the method "right click - Open with Photoshop CS6", the file is opened first in Camera Raw, and then in Photoshop, and the path(s) is missing.I can open these TIFF files and access Paths but only if I locate and select the file from within Photoshop (File/ Open.../). The Open window gives "Format" as Camera Raw (which it isn't, having been saved as 8bit file). If I override  format to "TIFF", the file opens with clipping path shown.

Illustrator :: Save AI Patterns With 8bit / Channel?

Jun 27, 2012

I would like to create seamless greyscale patterns in AI CS6 by using typical Vector-Tools, Gradients and Transparency.Output however needs to be 16Bit/Channel RGB - 256 greys are clearly not enough on the Gradients, they would lead to nasty artifacts in the intended field of use explanation here.I realize that AI is 8bit and that internal Image-Conversion from Vector clearly was no option. The underlying question for me is - does AI also internally work with just with 256 shades of grey in its gradients too?Or was there theoretically a way to pass smoother Vectors over to PS which in contrast to AI can save 16 bit Gradients? All I tried thus far (importing AI though Clipboard as Shape-Layers/Smart-Objects) yielded unusable results for what I'm after.

AutoDesk Smoke :: Export Differences With YUV 8bit And 10bit?

Jun 11, 2013

I have been finding some strange issues exporting out of Sp2 and now still the same in ext1. I set up some color bars and exported HD YUV files in 8bit and 10bit and found there to be a big shift in color and gamma when viewing on the waveform monitor (both smoke's waveform monitor, and an external waveform monitor on my reference OLED screen)Ive attatched screen grabs of the differences when ive imported the files back in and put them in a timeline.

The original internally generated color bars and the exported 10bit uncompressed file are the same but both uncompressed forms of 8bit (2vuy, and yuv2) are completely shifted - and it is not a YUV headroom issue.

When looking at the waveform you can see the steps in luminance seem to be very different - as though the RGB to YUV or YCbCr conversion has been done with a different calculation. Maybe the SDTV BT.601 vs HDTV BT.709 calculation. Gamma is not being shifted as shown by the gradient I have running accross the frame being mapped as a straight line 0-100 in the waveform.

Most other forms of an 8bit YUV file ive tested dont have this issue ( h264, DNxHD mxf's, xdcamHD422). Also ProRes of all flavours is fine, although these are 10 and 12bit.However I have another issure with exporting XDCAMHD422 files in that the length of the mxf is always shorter by 2-5 frames. This is was something I reported as a bug a few months ago and it still isnt fixed.Frustrating since this is the required format needed to supply TVC's to the TV stations, and the most common export function I would use from smoke - although its useless, still...

Photoshop :: 32bit CS6 And Out Of RAM

Sep 22, 2012

I am having all sorts of trouble with my setup - 32bit windows 7 and 32bit CS6. I have a 2TB hard disk (with 1.7 unused) and 8GB Ram installed.

I understand that this setup has a maximum amount of 1.7GB ram available to CS6 and this may possibly be the problem.  (see the attachment)

My D800 NEF images are around 40MB each. I get out of ram messages in Photoshop and the same in Bridge. In Bridge the 100% lupe takes forever to activate and eventually after several images it says the 100% lupe is unavailable. If I purge the cache it is OK again for just a few images. There appears to be no problem with smaller files, jpegs etc.

I will change the setup to 64bit CS6 on Win7 64bit if this is the only way to rectify the problem.

Photoshop :: CS4 On XP-32bit

Oct 19, 2008

Now that I have CS4 running on XP I'm trying to do some real work with it. First thing I do is disable tabbed windows and other new features as they have yet to prove themselves useful in my workflow. Perhaps I'll grow to appreciate them. But for now I'm just trying to get the app to work with the good ol' floating windows.

1) Can I stop new images opening with a Window that's glued to the top left corner of my screen? Past versions of PS just opened a floating Window. CS4 obliges me to 'unstick' the Window from the top left corner every time I open a new image. I've scoured the preferences but have yet to find any way to turn off this feature.

2) When grabbing the top bar of an open image window to move it on my screen I find it to be sluggish. With previous versions of PS one would grab the top of the image window and move it quickly on your screen to wherever you want. The response was pretty will instantaneous. With CS4 there seems to be a very slight lag whereby the move is occurring slightly behind the cursor moving it. It's not a huge lag. Just enough to get the sense that there's something amiss. I'll try it in Vista64 to see if the same thing is occurring there.

Photoshop :: PS Use A Linear Shadow Segment For...

Feb 20, 2009

In the ACR forum, there was a recent discussion about linear segments for the shadows. These are official for sRGB and ProPhotoRGB but are not part of the aRGB specification, but a slope of less than 32 is allowed in the shadows for raw converters and is used by ACR for all three of these spaces.

Does Photoshop currently implement a linear segment for these color spaces and does it make that much difference in practical photography?

before the latest updates to photoshop CC one could export from LR a series od Raw images to HDR Pro, create a 32bit file, save and editin LR or CR.

Now, when creating the 32bit file photshops promts a button for edting in Camera Raw instead of the usual "create file" (then to be saved and opened in LR). Which is ok, but if I edit the file in CR and then open it as a Tiff in LR the adjustments done in CR are not visible in the sliders, but not only, the images is of bad quality in LR.
