Photoshop :: 8bit Vs 16bit On New Pallette Dialog
Jul 9, 2004
involving the choice of creating a new image with 8bit or 16bit color depth.
If I'm about to create a new logo or image of some sort my first impulse is to use the highest of the 2 (8 or 16).
I know it has to do with the amount of color information in each pixel so I grab at the highest number... is that impulse reasonable? Striving for the highest quality? Or is there a point of diminishing "perceivable" results?
I have also noticed that some 3rd party filters do not work when in the 16bit mode so that "might" be a drawback I suppose.
Also - I can set my monitor to 32bit color - and do - yet PS stops at 16bit... what is the reason for this please?

I'm trying to edit some scans of some drawings in Photoshop CS3, but I can't edit much. I think it might be a 16 bit TIFF, but I can't change to 8 bit. The option is completely grayed out, along with many others.

When I use the 8bit mode in PsCS3, I notice some banding when using tools such as gradient map. When using 16bit mode, the banding is not so noticeable but it seems to increase file size.So which bit mode should I use for creating images for the web?

I am using a windows CS6 Bridge => Camera Raw (8.2) => CS6 Photoshop (13.0.1 x64) to try to open various 16-bit raw files (.dng, .nef, .arw) which Bridge sees as 16-bit, but only an 8-bit version makes it into photoshop.
Â
How do I convince Camera Raw to do its job?
Â
Lightroom (4.4) is able to export a 16-bit .psd which sort-of-works but shouldn't be necessary.

Is there anywhere that clearly explains what everything does in the brushes pallette? Or maybe a tutorial?
I understand some of the basic stuff like the color dynamics, and smoothing etc. But the shape dynamics and whatnot i could use a bit of clarification on.

Must have hit a wrong key.
The blue bar at the top of the pallette has disappeared in the History, Histogram and Tool Design Preset windows. What do I do to get it back so that I will be able to move these windows to where I want them.

I want to break an image down into a core group of colors. Is there any way in photoshop cs to define my colors so when I select one it snaps to the best choice...
I.E. if you select a color with the eye dropper then you check the RGB value of it you can click the "Web Only Colors" and it will snap to the closest choice.
I want to have a pallette of 10-11 colors and have it snap to the best choice...
--------
2.
Or even better... take a whole image and convert it to the 10-11 colors I want. Is this possible with some sort of filter?
WHITE
BLACK
BLUE
GREEN
PINK
BROWN,

I'm trying to add a snow layer to a photo, which I've done before quite well.
This time, something ain't working right!
I've noticed that in my layers pallette, for each layer, on the left hand side is the "eye" icon, but then there should be a "paint brush" icon ....... and there isn't.
Is this why the whole process isn't working?
how do I get the "paint brush" icon back?
screenshot showing the pallette (with missing paint brush).

In Photoshop CS2 - I used to be able to select the current tool by clicking on it, but now when I click on a tool the window pops up with all the tools available. This happens when I click on any tool that has other options. Usually I would have to click and hold to view the pop up window of other tool options or right click on the arrow for that tool to get the pop up window of the other tools. I have tried resetting my prefeneces by deleting the Adobe Photoshop X Prefs.psp as mentioned in another blog on this site. But that hasn't helped. Any help would be greatly appreciated, other than telling me to upgrade to the current version os CS,

I like to work in a real 16bit (per channel) RGB mode.
When I create a new RGB image with 16bit there are only 8bit values (0-255 and not 0-1023) in the color picker and in my info panel.
Is PS CS2 just working internally with 16bit and doesn't provide manual access to all values?

I'm using CS 6 is on a Mac running OS 10.8.5.
Â
I scanned an image using Image Capture which turned it into a tiff. I opened the tiff in Photoshop and discovered that Filter Gallery was grayed out.
Â
I opened an older Photoshop tiff and looked for differences. The older one, wherein filter gallery was available, was an eight bits per channel document. The new one is 16 bits per channel. When I changed the new one to eight bits per channel, Filter Gallery became available.
Â
If my (extremely limited) understanding of the technology is correct, there is more information in 16 bits per channel and hence presumably a richer quality image. On general principle of course I'd prefer not to lose any richness. Is there some way I can get Photoshop to give me access to the filter gallery in a 16 bits per channel mode?

I've used photoshop to paint for many years (I'm a production artist for children's television) and never had this kind of thing before. It could be a total coincidence, but it seemed only to get like this since I upgraded to Production premium CS6.
Â
I have the newest Nvidia drivers, the latest photoshop and production suite updates. I've tried turning off GPU acceleration and I've calibrated my monitors and cintiq several times using the Spyder 3 Elite calibration tools. I've created 8bit, 16bit and 32bit images and the problem persists no matter what. Other stats:
Â
Adobe Photoshop Version: 13.0.1 (13.0.1 20120808.r.519 2012/08/08:21:00:00) x64
Operating System: Windows 7 64-bit
Video Card: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 280M
Â
This is a 16bit image saved as a jpeg, but still a relatively accurate example of what I see in photoshop. In fact it looks better here. It was created using a low opacity brush with hardness set to zero.

We are rendering raster passes in cg which need to be added together to reassemble a beauty render. The layer blending mode being used is linear dodge. There is a dramatic difference in the result in 32bit mode compared to 8bit mode.We normally work with adobergb1988 color workspace.
Â
What is the math being used in 8bit mode with the adobergb colorspace? The problem is similar with sRGB profile. If set up a linear color workspace icc the 8bit mode behaves just like 32bit mode. However no one in our facility nor our clients wants to work with a custom linear icc profile.I would like to preprocess the layers while in 32bit mode to compensate for the gamma space processing of sRGB or adobeRGB color profiles in 8bit mode.Ive tried simply using a exposure node with gamma 2.2 but this is clearly not right.

I've read all over that the filter only works with an 8bit/RGB file, which my file is, so I don't understand what the problem is. I am attempting to light a smart object (3d bevel and extruded text) that I created in illustrator, and thought that I might just need to rasterize the smart object before the filter would work, but even after I render it and or flatten the image, merge visible, I still don't have the option to use lighting effects!Â

My normal workflow consists of opening RAW files in ACR, making adjustments, then moving on to Photoshop where I apply retouching and build clipping paths. I then save the file as an 8bit TIFF. I rarely reopen these 8bit TIFFs again, but when I did so recently what I encountered was not what I expected.
Â
My Photoshop (CS6) is opening 8bit TIFF files as Camera Raw when selected by "right click" followed by "Open with Photoshop CS6". I remember being able to open 8bit TIFF files directly in Photoshop, but I think this change has occurred since installing CS6.
Again, files in question began as 16bit Raw files, but were worked on in Photoshop CS6 (retouching) and saved with clipping paths. This would reduce them to 8bit files. When placed in page layout, clipping paths work properly, confirming that paths are intact.
Â
When I want to open the files again - say from Bridge or a Finder window - by the method "right click - Open with Photoshop CS6", the file is opened first in Camera Raw, and then in Photoshop, and the path(s) is missing.I can open these TIFF files and access Paths but only if I locate and select the file from within Photoshop (File/ Open.../). The Open window gives "Format" as Camera Raw (which it isn't, having been saved as 8bit file). If I override format to "TIFF", the file opens with clipping path shown.

I'm currently working on a User Interface for a Wall Panel, but this Wall Panel has only 16bit (65.000) colors, i've tried a lot of different things but can't find a way to get smooth gradients, my images always have gradient banding.
I was wondering if there is a way to tell photoshop to work in 16bit mode ? (not 16bit by channel) so that the colors selected for the gradients would always be contained in the 65.000 available colors.
For the moment, the only way to get a 16bit image is when saving a file as a bitmap and selecting 16bit. But everytime i do this, gradient banding immediatly appear. Maybe photoshop bitmap encoder is just not that good for 16 bit mode bitmaps .

I am using Photoshop CS6. I am unable to save a 8bit tiff or psd file as a jpeg. When I choose JPEG format .iff is attached to the file. When I open the same file in CS5 it works correctly. Whichever format I attempt to save as it selects the suffix for the format above.  I have downloaded again but no change.Â

I noticed that when I open a 16bit ppm in GIMP 2.8, the file opens without the 'gimp can't handle 16bit, it will loose data, etc...' notification. But if I open a tiff version of the very same raw file, the notification does pop up. My understanding is that current GIMP 2.8 can't handle 16bit, regardless of file format. Is that right?

I would like to create seamless greyscale patterns in AI CS6 by using typical Vector-Tools, Gradients and Transparency.Output however needs to be 16Bit/Channel RGB - 256 greys are clearly not enough on the Gradients, they would lead to nasty artifacts in the intended field of use explanation here.I realize that AI is 8bit and that internal Image-Conversion from Vector clearly was no option. The underlying question for me is - does AI also internally work with just with 256 shades of grey in its gradients too?Or was there theoretically a way to pass smoother Vectors over to PS which in contrast to AI can save 16 bit Gradients? All I tried thus far (importing AI though Clipboard as Shape-Layers/Smart-Objects) yielded unusable results for what I'm after.
