Photoshop :: Camera Raw Only Offers To Open 16bit Raw Files In 8bit Mode
Aug 9, 2013
I am using a windows CS6 Bridge => Camera Raw (8.2) => CS6 Photoshop (13.0.1 x64) to try to open various 16-bit raw files (.dng, .nef, .arw) which Bridge sees as 16-bit, but only an 8-bit version makes it into photoshop.
How do I convince Camera Raw to do its job?
Lightroom (4.4) is able to export a 16-bit .psd which sort-of-works but shouldn't be necessary.

I'm trying to edit some scans of some drawings in Photoshop CS3, but I can't edit much. I think it might be a 16 bit TIFF, but I can't change to 8 bit. The option is completely grayed out, along with many others.

When I use the 8bit mode in PsCS3, I notice some banding when using tools such as gradient map. When using 16bit mode, the banding is not so noticeable but it seems to increase file size.So which bit mode should I use for creating images for the web?

involving the choice of creating a new image with 8bit or 16bit color depth.
If I'm about to create a new logo or image of some sort my first impulse is to use the highest of the 2 (8 or 16).
I know it has to do with the amount of color information in each pixel so I grab at the highest number... is that impulse reasonable? Striving for the highest quality? Or is there a point of diminishing "perceivable" results?
I have also noticed that some 3rd party filters do not work when in the 16bit mode so that "might" be a drawback I suppose.
Also - I can set my monitor to 32bit color - and do - yet PS stops at 16bit... what is the reason for this please?

My normal workflow consists of opening RAW files in ACR, making adjustments, then moving on to Photoshop where I apply retouching and build clipping paths. I then save the file as an 8bit TIFF. I rarely reopen these 8bit TIFFs again, but when I did so recently what I encountered was not what I expected.
My Photoshop (CS6) is opening 8bit TIFF files as Camera Raw when selected by "right click" followed by "Open with Photoshop CS6". I remember being able to open 8bit TIFF files directly in Photoshop, but I think this change has occurred since installing CS6.
Again, files in question began as 16bit Raw files, but were worked on in Photoshop CS6 (retouching) and saved with clipping paths. This would reduce them to 8bit files. When placed in page layout, clipping paths work properly, confirming that paths are intact.
When I want to open the files again - say from Bridge or a Finder window - by the method "right click - Open with Photoshop CS6", the file is opened first in Camera Raw, and then in Photoshop, and the path(s) is missing.I can open these TIFF files and access Paths but only if I locate and select the file from within Photoshop (File/ Open.../). The Open window gives "Format" as Camera Raw (which it isn't, having been saved as 8bit file). If I override format to "TIFF", the file opens with clipping path shown.

I'm using CS 6 is on a Mac running OS 10.8.5.
I scanned an image using Image Capture which turned it into a tiff. I opened the tiff in Photoshop and discovered that Filter Gallery was grayed out.
I opened an older Photoshop tiff and looked for differences. The older one, wherein filter gallery was available, was an eight bits per channel document. The new one is 16 bits per channel. When I changed the new one to eight bits per channel, Filter Gallery became available.
If my (extremely limited) understanding of the technology is correct, there is more information in 16 bits per channel and hence presumably a richer quality image. On general principle of course I'd prefer not to lose any richness. Is there some way I can get Photoshop to give me access to the filter gallery in a 16 bits per channel mode?

We are rendering raster passes in cg which need to be added together to reassemble a beauty render. The layer blending mode being used is linear dodge. There is a dramatic difference in the result in 32bit mode compared to 8bit mode.We normally work with adobergb1988 color workspace.
What is the math being used in 8bit mode with the adobergb colorspace? The problem is similar with sRGB profile. If set up a linear color workspace icc the 8bit mode behaves just like 32bit mode. However no one in our facility nor our clients wants to work with a custom linear icc profile.I would like to preprocess the layers while in 32bit mode to compensate for the gamma space processing of sRGB or adobeRGB color profiles in 8bit mode.Ive tried simply using a exposure node with gamma 2.2 but this is clearly not right.

As the title says my 32-bit HDR files open as 8-bit in Camera Raw 7.3. I have a Win 7 32-bit system. I create the 32-bit HDR and then save it as a 32-bit TIFF but when I open it in PS CS6 via Camera Raw 7.3 it comes in as only 8-bit.

I noticed that if you have a ".psd" file even if it is Flatten, it will not open in camera raw. I can easily save it to a Tiff or other formats and open it in camera raw, but I wonder why .psd file does not open in camera raw.

I've replaced my Ps 5.5 by Ps 6. Now I'm having problems with opening psd files in Camera Raw; in Ps 5 I worked from Bridge and could open that type of files from Bridge to ACR.
I just found out how to open it in Photoshop: open as....RAW file. But I want several psd-files opening in ACR simultaneously, because I want to synchronize them. That is not possible; I can only select just 1 file.

I have read in numerous articles that I can open jpg files in ACR from within Elements 11. They all state to go File>Open, then browse to the jpg you wish to open, select Camera Raw from the file type and select the jpg. When I select the Camera Raw file type then all the jpg images disappear in the selection area or if I click the jpg first and then select Camera Raw and open then it says file not found. Am I doing this wrong or are the articles I am reading incorrect?

I am not able to see or open Raw files from my Canon 40D in either Photoshop CS3 or Bridge CS3. At first I was able to open RAWS in Photoshop and then I followed directions on the internet at how to manually replace a Camera Raw Plugin so I could open it in Bridge and now neither of the apps work with RAW. In photoshop It says that the file is not supported.
I looked up what plug in I needed and it said 4.2 for a Canon 40 D. I also followed the instructions in the read me file that was with the plugin download. No results from it. I even tried to switch it back to the old plug in to see if I could atleast get back the capiblility of opening it in Photoshop even though bridge was not working...still can't open it in either. What am I missing?

I cannot open new files from Photoshop CS6.
I have to go outside of the program and open them by dragging the file onto the dock icon. This means I cannot open any of my digital camera files (transferred into Nikon Transfer into "Pictures") from the program. So, I have to go 'outside' of PS, and then back in – and this eats up a good deal of time, and this latest version isn't as quick as it used to be.
Sometimes, it won't even let me open a file I'd worked on only a few hours before. Again, I can open them 'outside' PS, but I keep getting this error when I try to access them from via command-O:
"Could not complete your request because of a program error."
I've reset the defaults twice. Fresh operating system. Clean user account.
