Photoshop :: Image Capture With Greater Than 8 Bits Per Channel
Apr 12, 2004
if there are any digital cameras which do image capture with greater than 8 bits per channel? I don't doubt such a camera would be well out of my price range, but I've got into scanning and working with with 16-bit colour and I've got the itch...
does anyone here regularly work in a 16-bit colour space?

What is the more usual image mode? I think my files have been 8 bits per channel for many years. I was having a lot of trouble with Photoshop slowing down dramatically on several large files I created, and I noticed I had made them in 16 bit mode. Would this require more RAM?

I have never had this happen before: I cannot change the image I am editing from 16 to 8 bits per channel. Also odd is when I click on an adjustment layer I have created it is not highlighted in blue.

When I have an image in 8 bits per channel, its grayscale alpha channel is in 8 bits (256 levels). But when I have an image in 16 bits per channel, is its grayscale alpha channel in 16 bits (32.768 levels)? They are a lot to make a selection...

I accidentally had my files marked at 16 bits/channel, went ahead and saved them as jpegs. Got a software prompt prior to saving that said "File must be saved as a copy with this selection." I did not know what it meant. I went ahead with the save. Now I am realizing my mistake because I have tried printing my images at a lab and the colors are WAY off. Very gray and horrible. I have my master files saved as psd files as well and have opened those, changed the bits/channel to 8, tried to print and the colors are still awful. I have many files that were saved this way. There has to be some kind of a fix without me having to re-edit dozens and dozens of photos.

How come my 16 bits RAW file is only 10 bits when converted to DNG? To me that sound like a loss in quality and possible post processing issues. Do I need to worry?

I recently switched from Photoshop CS6 to Photoshop Creative Cloud. Whereas in the CS6 version, I could not count the number of pixels in a selection (I was not using the Extended version), I was happy to read that this split was removed and this function is available in Photoshop CC. Or, should be available. As it happens, when I go to Image -> Analysis, all options (except for Ruler Tool) are greyed out. This is the case when no document is opened, when a document with multiple layers is opened, or when a simple single-layer document is opened. The software is up to date (accoding to the Application Manager).
Can it be a limitation of the 32-bits version, and should I switch to a 64-bit version?

Got my max design 2012 but have a problem with horizontal banding appearing on certain bits of the image. see attachement.
Rendered the image fine in IRAY on max 2011 but now I moved to 2012 the same file creates these wierd lines.
Takes too long to clone it in Pshop and the results are not great.
It isn't running out of memory on the card.

I put rounded corners [from the decor part] onto my image, and when i saved it, it came up with these extra bits at the corners; which make the image actually rectangle. How i can get rid of them? i just want the plain round corners. =x

I am a screen printer and I print my separations from Photoshop. I routinely work with multi channel files or RGB files with additional spot color channels. I have created actions to place my registration marks, re-size images, etc to get ready to print but I manually have to create the text labels for each screen if they are missing from the original artwork.
The files I work with have channels named as "Base White, Red, Green, 284 Blue" etc indicating the ink color. What i would like to be able to do is click an action that would copy the text from the channel name and insert it into a separate or each/all channels near the top of the file so that when I print each positive it has a corresponding label for ink color.
I am not sure if this is even possible, and I am limited on my knowledge when it comes to actions and have pretty much got lucky in the past getting them to do what I want without unnecessary steps.
On my registration target action it creates a new channel with each individual reg mark then combines them into one separate channel in which I just copy the contents and select all the ink channels and fill with black to make them appear, i'm happy with the steps it takes as it isn't too much trouble and if this could do the same with labels I would be happy with that.

I am trying to create an image from a paused .wmv
XP pro, windows media player, photoshop cs.
I am pausing the .wmv and doing a screen print and a paste into photoshop.
It is not working as the screen print is really not capturing the video frame, if I close windows media player, the video image disappears from the psd file even if I save the psd before closing windows media player.
How can I capture a video frame and import the image into photoshop?

In short, I have two images open in Gimp. I need to add one the images to the alpha channel of the other image. How do I go about doing this? I was able to add an alpha channel but beyond that I am lost.
This bit will only make sense to 3D modelers. I have 3D model that I'm importing into a the Unity 3D game engine. One of the material shaders makes use of specularity maps. Normally the specularity map would reside in the alpha channel of the RGBA diffuse image, but due to file sizes, all these are released as separate jpegs. The idea is to make some parts of the 3D model more glossy as far as I know. The only way to do this is to add this specular image to the alpha channel of the diffuse image, and then the game engine can work its magic, making the skin look realistic.

simple terms the following options in the JPEG2000 dialogue box :
-Wavelet Integers and Float. Explain wavelet in idot proof terms? What is the difference between the two types of wavelets?
-Tile size. What does it refer to when it says Tile? What's a tile in this instance?
-Region of Interest. What does "controls the quality within the image by using an alpha channel" mean?

I have an image and i'd like to turn that into a transparent gif/png file for a website (has a changing bg color at random). The thing is i don't know how do this, and could use some help. What I tried so far is that I add to the original image an alpha channel which is the original image inverted, but that did not show me the checkered bg.
Anyway I added a faked impression of what i want to achieve. Thanks for any tips on how to make this work.

I'm using Xfrog trees (first time, and quite new to 3ds max design 2011).
The leaves are images laid onto planes. The leaf has a white background and is precreated to be transparent etc.....
In theory i should be able to import the tree, render and everything should work. it's not working. The tree renders with the white background to the leaves
Is there a setting i'm missing, maybe in the render setup?

Thought I'd try Gimp on my new laptop instead of Photoshop. I'm making graphics for a game.
I needed to add an alpha channel to an image and edit it, including pasting into the alpha channel from the clipboard. Easiest thing in the world on Photoshop, but seems utterly impossible on Gimp.
I've looked at a few threads that discuss editing the alpha channel, and they make it sound like rocket science. Notable, most seem to involve juggline multiple other images and then following convoluted pasting operations to get anything down. Or using layer "Masks" which, as best I can see, are impossible to paste into (and I couldn't find how to convert these masks to alpha channels either.)
As it stands, I've failed to get anything onto an alpha channel at all, except some scribble that showed up in the tiny side icon but couldn't be seen in the main image.
I'm new to Gimp, and I'm hoping I've just missed something. What is the straight forward way to edit the alpha channel (drawing on it, pasting into it from the clipboard), and seeing the results at the same time. I've tried everything intuitive and nothing works.

I'm having trouble with getting quotation marks to display correctly, they look like 2 stacked >> symbols. They change slightly depending on what font I'm using, but they all ride at the base of the text. I cannot acheive normal looking curly or straight quotes at all.
I have tried switching smart quotes on and off in the preferences, restarting, etc. I've noticed this problem in the past, but I thought it was the font I was using. The same thing happens with Times New Roman. I'm running an up to date version of PSextended CS5, 64bit on win 7 64.

I made a complicated selection, which I saved to a channel. Then I inverted the selection and tried to delete the inverse (hopefully to transparency, but deleting to a background color would be better than not deleting at all). However, nothing happens when I press the delete key, or when I select "Clear" from the edit menu. Trying to use the Cut command doesn't work, either.
After deselecting, I can get the selection back through the channels dock, by right-clicking and then choosing "Channel to selection" or "Add to selection." It appear to replace the selection from the channel properly. I just can't delete anything.

I'm experimenting with a digital IR camera. The images are very "magenta" in color and everyone states to simply "swap the Red and Blue" color channels. How can this be done in Paint.net? Is there a plugin that would process IR color pictures?

I was simply wondering the best means in Paint.Net to use a black and white image and use it as the alpha channel of my image, with white being opaque and black being fully transparent. I looked through the plugins on the site and didn't see anything that seemed to resemble what I was after.
