Photoshop :: How To Color In A Shape
Mar 25, 2009
I have a layer that is black and I have drawn two circles on the layer that make a ring/donut. I can't find out how to color the space confined between the two cirlces. Again this is all on the same layer. Any help or suggestions?
I thought it would be as easy as paint where you can just select the paint bucket and click the area you want to color.

When I create a shape with a Pantone Color and then decrease the opacity in the color swatch palette, then go to my swatches palette and select "Select All Unused Colors" it highlights the pantone color being used in the file. In previous version, it never did this. This is for CS6. Any know fix for this?

I have seen a difference in the color and the shape when I send something in to be printed by a Print company. The file looked alright to me on the screen, but when I got it back the shape was "stretched". I print inkjet CD labels on a Primera Signature Pro Printer as well and some of the labels have come out stretched out of shape as well. It's not terribly out of shape, but enough to mess up the artwork. Any suggestions as to how to check for proper sizing and color?

I have made a curved shape to be used as a "rounded corner" on a section of a webpage. Background is white and the curved bit is #09b (0:153:187). However, when I use the url ( I called it corner.gif) in the CSS, the image, on the actual page, is a slightly different color: 44:154:181.
How should I have all the various color settings set up - for example, what should I have ticked in View/Proof Setup? I have been trying various things so that the color of the image in Photoshop is the same as when I put it on the page, with no success.

Watch the following animation to see that a new shape created by first drawing a path then hitting the [Shape] button is not creating a shape of the current Foreground color, but rather apparently of the color of the shape layer below it. This seems odd to me:
I don't think it's document-specific, but just to leave nothing to chance, if you want to try to reproduce it, you can download a copy of the file: [URL] ......

I'm currently working on a vector in the trial version of Photoshop CS6 that I acquired this Friday(?), and I'm running into a troublesome dilemma every time I re-open the file to work on at a later date. I find that some layers -- not all, but maybe five or six -- have changed their color to whichever color is in my palette, or whatever was in my palette the last time I opened Photoshop.
Is there a setting I'm missing, or is this a current glitch in this version of CS6? And in case you're wondering, yes, I have tried saving with all shape layers locked before I close; it made no difference.

I need to create a bleed around an object that is cut out on it's own layer. Basically I need a shape burst... the edge pixels expanding outward away from the layer. I know I could enlarge the layer but that doesn't work with more complex shapes. And I don't want to use the rubber stamp tool. I have lots of images to do. The end result does not need to be detailed at all, it will be blurred. How to create this other than rubber stamp?

I've created a round rectangle. I want the shape to be black with a white border. However whenever I finalize and save, my white border disappears and I'm just left with a black shape. Edit > Stroke is'nt highlighted.
Whenever I change the colors from black and white I dont seem to have this problem. How can I change/modify the BORDER COLOR of my shapes?

I'm trying to create a rectangle with a red border and no inside fill. It's only to highlight some text of a bank form.
I know i have to right click the layer and choose blending options and stroke. But I've tried to change the color so many times and no matter what I do, the outer line remains gray and with rounded corners.
I want the corners of the rectangle to be squared, not rounded but I'm having a hard time changing this.
I'm using Photoshop CS3
show a picture of where to change the color of the outer line? I've tried everything.

In other words, I have a green patterned background, and I want to add a transparent triangle (which should then be the green background by making it transparent) over a white layer. To sum it up, I want the triangle to be filled in with the green patterned background over the white layer. How do I do this?

I have some smart objects in a file that I've been working on. For example, I have a simple replay button shape. But, for some reason the color of the smart object differs from the actual color of the shape. In other words, if I sample the color of the smart object it has a hex code of ae7f2c (image1). But if I double click into the smart object to see the actual shape color the hex code is correct: a37e2c (image 2). It's a very slight shift, but causing me to go off brand colors for a client that I am working for.

I have a cartoon line drawing. The black outlines are anti aliased so the edges of the lines have different grades of gray pixels on them. When I use the fill tool, and adjust the fill with the opacity and tolerance sliders, (I think that's what they're called in GIMP), I still can't get what I want. Only some of the gray pixels are colored in. Others are canceled out. Completely covered by the color, erasing some of the line.
Or some pixels remain uncolored. Just gray instead of a combination of the gray AND the fill color. What I'm looking for is an effect that looks like I placed a colored gel shaped like the cartoon character over the drawing. All the different shades of gray pixels should still be seen. Even the ones that are lighter than the fill color. With a gel, those pixels would appear darker, even though they were lighter than the fill color without the gel over them. The darkness of the color PLUS the added darkness of even the lightest gray pixels should make all the pixels appear darker. And the line would appear complete. Not partially erased.
Is it at all possible to get this effect?

Is it possible to assign a custom spot color to a shape via VBA? The best I could come up with was something like the following (where "sh" represents a shape):
sh.Outline.Color.FixedAssign cdrCustom, 1, 100
I'm under the impression that cdrCustom is supposed to represent the user's custom spot color palette, but this doesn't seem to work.
Furthermore, I can manually assign a custom spot color to an object and then retrieve the PaletteID and PaletteIndex of that color using VBA. For example:
Debug.Print ActiveSelection.Shapes(1)..Outline.Color.PaletteID
Debug.Print ActiveSelection.Shapes(1)..Outline.Color.PaletteIndex
The PaletteID that returns is 0 (cdrCustom), and the PaletteIndex returned does correspond with its order in my custom spot color palette. In fact, I can also retrieve the Color.Name and it will correctly identify the custom spot color's name.
For the life of me, I just can't seem to assign these colors using VBA. Is it just that the VBA in CorelDRAW 11 is too immature?

In Photoshop CS6, when you have a shape layer with a layer mask, and the two are not linked together, and the layer mask is selected, you should be able to scale the layer mask independently of the shape. What actually happens is the shape gets scaled and the layer mask stays untouched. In fact, even if you option-click on the layer mask to show the mask by itself, and then try to scale it, you still end up scaling the shape instead of the mask. Even if you go as far as to make a pixel selection of the layer mask and attempt to scale the pixels, the shape still gets scaled and the layer mask still stays put! Unbelievable!
This works correctly in CS4, but not in CS6 (don't know about CS5).
