Photoshop :: Working With HUGE Images
Apr 2, 2007
creating very large digital artwork. I mean images that are around 3ft by 2ft at least, maybe upwards of 48" by 30".
Many layers, lots of depth going on, in the vein of lets say - Abstract digital art. I will also be creating these images not only at large image size but very high quality for Giclee and other printing purpose.
My question is, what sort of PC requirements should I consider for the most efficiency. As much RAM as possible? I am already looking into a 30" monitor just to give me as much real estate as possible. When working at images around 10,000 x 7,000 pixels I am already working at 12% image on a large monitor.
If money wasn't much of an option what would you go for/what considerations would you bring up?
2+Gigs of RAM over Dual/Quad Core processors.
One large 30" monitor or perhaps Dual 24"?
Massive HD space for the 300mb that each image will be when saving/storing.

Hi, I am starting a new business making art prints for artists. I have purchased this huge printer ... just got it. I've been studying photoshop for months using "classroom in a book" and am finding out that I've probably studied the wrong thing.
I have three questions and thanks in advance for any of your expertise.
1. I successfully printed out a two foot by two foot photo I took of my husband with my 8.2 megapixel camera. Then, tried to print out another photo.... used the same photoshop settings, but the print was 6 inches by 6 inches...... I did notice that the second print was only 16. %... I wondered if that caused the difference in size? How do I set that to 100 % if that is what is needed?
2. I want to print out multiple small prints using this big paper and printer... I want to tile these various prints (all different) along the top making rows... I want them to be all different. I called Epson support and they said I could do that in photoshop. Do I use the browser?
3. I have a wide format scanner. It does up to 11 x 17 inches. If I have something larger to scan, let's say, I scan the bottom of the image and then scan the top of the image, how do I put them together?

I could really use some help. I have to work on a vergy large photo (a 2x2.5 metters print, in 300 dpi). Someone told me that I should work on a small version of the file, and then copy and paste the history from the small to the big file
The thing is: how do send the modifications from one file to another?

My custom linetype (something like this ----W----W----W----W---- ) doesn't work as a huge polyline (6 units wide.) The line is wide enough but the letters are tiny dots.
If I try to set the lineweight by layer, the maximum is 2.11 mm, which is way too small for the 50" by 70" map I'm working on.
Is there a way to get a nice looking line that wide with letters ( ----W---- for water, -----S---- for sewer, etc.) or should I tell my boss that we have to use the standard lines?

I create a document with multiple artboards whereby every image I place in the document is linked, however the size of the document is still enormous (around 350mb). It's a big document with a lot of clipping masks on images but surely it shouldn't be so big.

I'm working on some websites and my workflow is being slowed down because after installing the new Photoshop CC I tried dragging images from websites into photoshop to open them and create a new image over it WITH the same size as the previous image I dragged in.
I had no problem dragging and dropping images into photoshop CS6 before this, but now images are not opening when I do so. (I have to manually go find the image in the images folder thru dreamweaver first, then hunt them down and open them manually thru photoshop.)

I'm currently working on a huge image and remembered that a version of Photoshop used to have the function that would allow you to open one section of a huge image at a time to work on. From what I can recall you used to go to open the image and a Navigator looking window would pop up and you'd choose which area of the image you would like to work on, click ok and it would load just that area. Is this feature still around?

I've cropped/resized/etc and saved the resulting images with no problem. Today I did some simple adjustments to tiff files - perspective & cropping - and when I tried to save the finished file, I received an error message telling me PS couldn't save the image since it was either open or in use by another program. Trust me. Nothing was open. Not even a stray Windows program. I rebooted PC, redid changes, and attempted another save. No luck. I tried different images. I did so several times. Each time, same result. I'm running XP Pro. Haven't used PS is awhile for adjusting images but whenever I simply viewed pix, all was OK.

I'm going to take a family portrait photo and touch it up a little before printing it. Thing is ... I will be printing at least a size 16'' by 20'' photo. I'm not familiar with working with images this large. When I have it printed I want to be sure that the photo looks clear/normal.
I would appreciate any advice anyone could give me in regard to...
1) What color mode works best for quality printing results
2) How I should crop for best results
3) How to save file to ensure best printing results

My CS3 has been crashing every single time I work with a portrait style image... I don't have any other issues except this one.
I can open the raw file and edit it, but when I create a new canvas and move the file over into the new canvas it freezes and crashes... I can do the exact same thing with a landscape style image and it never even flinches. My computer easily meets the requirements to run CS3, so I don't know what the issue is since it only occurs with vertical images.

so I'm working on a pretty complex image with alot of composites - models on a new backgrounds, new heads, arms, etc. I had to scale these elements down to fit the image and I used smart object b/c i had to go back and forth and get placement approval before moving on to the retouching. I still have to adjust the mask edges in the smart object PSB's but it is really annoying to go back and forth from the composite image to the PSB with layer mask. Is there a way to rasterize the PSB into the final image with the layer mask so I can better blend it? I tried dragging the PSB with layer mask over but of course it is too big (because i scaled the PSB down).

I am now getting a program error when I try to save some images as jpegs. It seems that only a small percentage of my pics are having this issue, and they are the ones I have taken in the past two days. I can go back into my catalog and run any other pics through PSE and save as a jpeg with no problems. But if I try to do any touch ups on any of the pics from yesterday or the day before, i get the error message. I can even go back into lightroom 4 and export any pics from 3 days ago and have no issues saving them as jpegs. I always get the option to save as a jpeg, it just errors out while trying to save. I'm using a somewhat older laptop w/ vista 64 bit.Â

I may just be missing something here. If I open an image in photoshop and crop it, the image shows up at the new cropped size and I can then save the new image. I have 1000 people images with all different sizes but the same ratio. My hope is to create an action that crops a photo to a standard size and then saves into another folder.
Â
So I started my new action and did the crop and saved. Then I ran this action using automate and batch. The processing does happen but the images are cropped and then remain in a black box the size of the original photo. This is a problem for me... I only want to see the resized photo.

I've download Photoshop CS4 and running it in trial mode. When I use the brush tool for example, the delay in it actually printing on the paper after I click and drag is like 1-2 seconds. I have a pretty good PC, 2.4ghz @ quad.

i am working on colour-washing an A0 sized scanned architectural elevations drawing, nothing major, but the file size has now gone massive.
it started off as a scanned PDF of 2mb, which i converted to .PSD format and began bucket-filling area's with colour. the .PSD file is now 60mb, and i have flattened the image so there is only one layer?
the problem with it being 60mb is that our plotter hasnt got enough memory to print it.
and i have only coloured half of the drawing so far!
how can i reduce the file size but still keep it in .PSD format?

I am creating a 24"X18" Sign with text and simple graphics.
I set my canvas to 24X18 and the file size is over 2gb.
Should I be doing this in smaller scale to make the file sizes smaller? What happens when I send the file to the sign shop for printing? Will they need the full 24X18, or can I make it smaller but in a format that the print shop can blow up without sacrificing quality?
ALSO, I need to be able to send an example of the sign to my client by email. How can I make a downsized version with a small enough file size to email?

I have a client who wants a 180cm print on their car of a photograph I took. My problem is that I can't save the file. First it had some problems with re sampling the image, but I changed so it used the external hard drive as well. The problem was something with the hard drive not having enough space even though the was more than enough. I'm using Photoshop CC.
Â
Now the problem is that I don't have enough RAM. I have the 8gb of the best RAM out there. I've also tried with a best upgraded iMac 27 (late 2012), but it didn't work. The file is 1,87gb. I would need a super computer to be able to save that file and I doubt the client will be able to open it.Â

I'm used to working with older versions of Photoshop CS, where I 'just save' exr with no options. This previously resulted in file sizes half that of .hdr. In this latest version if I choose to save uncompressed (which I assumed the old versions of Photoshop did?) the file size is a good 10x larger than they used to be. If I save as zlib or wavelet, they're similar size (a fair bit less than a .hdr).
Â
What did the old Photoshop use for compression? Or how can I find out? I don't remember my old exrs taking so long to compress and save either (with zlib) but I might be wrong.

I have hundreds of web galleries that I need optimized. I need each photo opened and resaved. However, I need the photos to be saved via "save for web" so that the files end up being about 20-30 k. If I use just "save as > jpg" the files end up being about 100-130k. IMPORTANT NOTES: I want the current files to be overwritten (partly because, if I designate a destination, they will be unorganized, and partly because each photo comes in 4 diferent versions: bwlrg, bwsml, clrlrg, clrsml.

I'm laying out some big panels containing smaller images, so I am adding these using 'File>Place'. However, while the empty panel takes up about 70 MB, placing 3MB worth of smaller images makes the file size explode to a whopping 150MB, making it impossible to fill up the entire board. So far, I've seen file sizes of 500 MB, with Photoshop eating up 50GB swap files. what is going on here?

I have two PSD files. In one file 11pt font looks very small, in the other file 6pt font looks huge! Both fonts are MPlantin. Both canvas and image sizes are the same. Why is this happening?
Â
The reason I ask is I'm trying to get my font thickness just right when I print the file. The font keeps coming out too thick. I think this strange sizing this is a clue as to why.

I've copied and pasted a shape from Illustrator into Photoshop CS6.
Â
When I go to transform layer, Photoshop is putting a large bounding box around the object — even though the object's bounds are much smaller.
Â
No other layers are selected or linked to the Vector smart object.
