Photoshop :: Refine Selection When Its Similar To Background

Nov 25, 2013

What's a good way to refine a selection when it's a similar color to the background? I  have a photo of a dark skinned, black haired person in a white hoodie  against an off-white background. I got a pretty good overall   selection with the Quick Selection Tool; then I went to Refine Edge. That worked good on his hair, but it made the edge of the white hoodie  blotchy, as if it had worn part of it away.

Photoshop :: Using Refine Edge With Quick Selection

Sep 27, 2011

I'm not sure what's going on over at the Adobe Photoshop forum, but I've tried three different browsers and I can't get the Create/reply buttons after I log in. So, since life's too short to put up with whatever they're doing, I'll try here...I do a quick selection, then hit the "Refine Edge" button and make a change to the selection, but my change doesn't "take"...

Take an image, one layer (background), absolutely normal, boring image (for example, a white swan sitting in the blue water). Go in with Quick Select and select PART OF the swan. Leave some areas not selected, and select some water (areas that are selected and shouldn't be). I need to refine my selection. I subtract and add bits of selection with the Quick Select tool, but EVENTUALLY I'm going to have to do a more accurate refinement than the quick selection tool can do.

Hit "Refine Edge" from the tool bar and select "Overlay" for the view mode. I can see what's selected, and know what I'd like to change. I have a red overlay so I have a visual guide to changing things.Go to the "Refine Radius Tool" and paint over an area I want ADDED to my selection (a piece of swan immediately adjacent to my original selection). It runs red, like I'd expect. I release the mouse and a second later, the red goes away, and the selection has NOT been changed. I've tried this several different ways, and I'm unable to refine my selection from the Refine Edge tool...

I looked at Martin Evening's CS5 book, and as near as I can tell, I did exactly what he described..He got a selection, added to the selection, and it worked fine..I figure I've got something configured wrong, or something else goofed up. If I need a complex selection, and do the initial select with the Quick Select tool, HOW do I refine the edges and content of that selection? How SHOULD the "Refine Radius Tool" in "Refine Edge" work?

Photoshop :: Refine Edge Tool - Initial Selection Of Person

Sep 12, 2013

I made an initial selection of a person and selected Refine Edge. I simply want to take the person from his current location and place him somewhere else.

1. Are there any general guidelines for how much feather to add?
2. What about for Radius?
3. And Smooth?

I'm playing with the sliders, though I'm wondering if there is a range that I should try staying within for best results?

Im trying to get used to using Quick Select and Refine edges to mask out objects in my photos.

It works pretty well but Im still having trouble in some spots getting the edge to be a smooth curve.

How do you get the refine edge function to allow you to modify its edge so you can have a perfectly smooth edge?

Ive tried using the Refine Radius Tool and it just doesnt smooth it out completely.

Photoshop :: Selecting Object With Similar Background?

How do you select an object with a complicated background. For instance if I want to select a pine tree in forest and the tree is in the foregrond and there are trees of the same color in the background, I have found it hard to select because of the similar colors...all of the tutorials I have seen all have a single color back ground ie a girl with hair and doing a refind edge is pretty straight forward....but how do you do that with a busy background..(for instance ) I want to select a pine tree with all of it componets and plant it in the middle of the desert.

Photoshop :: Remove Background When Image Is Similar Color

Oct 19, 2012

I have an image of a dog on a white background. I've tried several methods to remove the white background, but the dog is a beagle and has some white fur. There are places where it is almost indistinguishable where the fir ends and the background begins (on his neck). What is the best method to remove the background?

While I've used Photoshop a lot, I am not formally trained, so need input on what tolerance levels, etc. should probably be. I've inserted the image. Haven't purchased it yet because I'm not confident I'm going to be able to remove the background.

Photoshop :: Complex Selection - Best Selection Method To Drop Out A Background

how to "drop out" the background from this photo (I have loads to do which are very similar). Thus far I have tried channel selections and the calculations tool + all the normal quick selection tools and I just cant get it to work without spending hours adjusting things. The end effect I need to achieve is a perfect white background without loosing any of the detail if possible. On a side note I have also tried taking the photo on blue, green, black and white backgrounds but due to the number of colours present in the products its just not working for me.

Paint Shop Pro :: Removing Background (picture With Similar Color)?

Dec 8, 2011

Reference tutorial=> Remove Photo Backgrounds with the Background Eraser {URL]

a) I follow the tutorial above to remove backgrounds. However, the background has similar color than picture (in this case "white" - picture attached - FIG_2). So, when I use "background eraser" tool, it erase part of my picture as well. So, how to handle it properly?

b) The tutorial was usefull to other image that has different backgound color (FIG_3 attached). But using other software (Gimp) I could just take the transparency index (color=> color to alfa) with "one click" without the request of erase background manually. So, is there any similar way to do it easily in Paint Shop?

Photoshop :: Mask Selection Background

Mar 28, 2009

When creating a selection in CS4 and then adding the selection as a mask I cannot seem to get around a black background surrounding the selected portion of the image by default.

In CS2 the background surrounding the selection/mask displays as a pattern of small gray and white squares, which I usually prefer for initial review of a selection as a mask. Yes, I can go the mask panel in CS4 and switch background views but none utilize the gray/white pattern as used by default in CS2.

Can this behavior be changed? I've tried manipulating preferences to no avail and cannot seem to locate any options to change the default display options.

Photoshop :: Using Transform Or Selection Tools Makes Non-background Layers Or Whole Document Invisible

Dec 15, 2012

I recently started having this problem in Photoshop CS6 where using the transform or selection tools makes all the layers other than my background layer disappear so I can't see what I'm selection or transforming. This happens randomly out of nowhere. I can be using those tools all day with no problem, and then out of nowhere it starts making things invisible.

There doesn't seem to be any other programs running that would cause it (not that that should be an issue, my computer could easily run all my Adobe programs at once if I wanted it to), and the only thing that seems to fix it so far is restarting Photoshop. But that gets old really fast when I have to do it over and over again. I tried calling Adobe, but somehow they're always closed, even during their supposed hours of operation.

GIMP :: Transparency (Alpha To Selection) - Remove White Background From Images

Aug 20, 2011

For quite some time I've been trying to find the best way to remove a white background from images. I've checked out the sticky thread on this forum and as my image isn't of great quality and because it features quite a lot of white that won't apply.

Recently I found this tutorial which is supposed to work great (as seen in the comments). However, I think that because of a GIMP update that won't apply anymore somehow. I was hoping you guys might know what was causing it.

Everything works well until I get to step 7, where I have to select to Alpha. There it selects just the outlines, but my selection includes inner parts of the image, not just the background. And then after I invert and delete, the white that remains still has transparent parts that show up on the upper layer. So, am I doing something wrong with the Alpha to Selection, is that tutorial updated or is there a better way to remove the background from ie. a logo with just one background colour which isn't of great quality.

Photoshop :: Refine Mask In CS6

May 18, 2012

I just upgraded from CS4 to CS6 and have been looking forward to using the incredible masking tools. I found a video by Russell Brown on Adobe TV that was very good....but it was for CS5 and I just wasted an hour of my life trying to figure out where the "Refine Mask" window was in CS6. I finally called support and AFTER the support person watched the video while I was on hold, she was able to tell me that in CS6, you double click on the mask to open the properties tab and have access to the sliders. They are different than in CS5, though.

Photoshop :: How Does Refine Edge Work
