Im trying to get used to using Quick Select and Refine edges to mask out objects in my photos.
It works pretty well but Im still having trouble in some spots getting the edge to be a smooth curve.
How do you get the refine edge function to allow you to modify its edge so you can have a perfectly smooth edge?
Ive tried using the Refine Radius Tool and it just doesnt smooth it out completely.
I'm not sure what's going on over at the Adobe Photoshop forum, but I've tried three different browsers and I can't get the Create/reply buttons after I log in. So, since life's too short to put up with whatever they're doing, I'll try here...I do a quick selection, then hit the "Refine Edge" button and make a change to the selection, but my change doesn't "take"...
Take an image, one layer (background), absolutely normal, boring image (for example, a white swan sitting in the blue water). Go in with Quick Select and select PART OF the swan. Leave some areas not selected, and select some water (areas that are selected and shouldn't be). I need to refine my selection. I subtract and add bits of selection with the Quick Select tool, but EVENTUALLY I'm going to have to do a more accurate refinement than the quick selection tool can do.
Hit "Refine Edge" from the tool bar and select "Overlay" for the view mode. I can see what's selected, and know what I'd like to change. I have a red overlay so I have a visual guide to changing things.Go to the "Refine Radius Tool" and paint over an area I want ADDED to my selection (a piece of swan immediately adjacent to my original selection).It runs red, like I'd expect. I release the mouse and a second later, the red goes away, and the selection has NOT been changed. I've tried this several different ways, and I'm unable to refine my selection from the Refine Edge tool...
I looked at Martin Evening's CS5 book, and as near as I can tell, I did exactly what he described..He got a selection, added to the selection, and it worked fine..I figure I've got something configured wrong, or something else goofed up. If I need a complex selection, and do the initial select with the Quick Select tool, HOW do I refine the edges and content of that selection? How SHOULD the "Refine Radius Tool" in "Refine Edge" work?
I'm having an issue with Refine Edge. I like to often add a slightly feathered edge to my masks. I figured recording an action of using Refine Edge would give me a quick way to do that to prevent harsh-edged selections. Well, RF gives me a soft edge, but also adds sort of an aliasing to it as well, which of course I don't want. get smooth edges using RF? Below shows an example.

1. Are there any general guidelines for how much feather to add?

I'm playing with the sliders, though I'm wondering if there is a range that I should try staying within for best results?
If you look closely in the attached picture, there is a spot of light blue on the player's helmet, that looks like a mistake (think it should look like the grass behind it)...though it actually may be part of his helmet.
Regardless, I'd like to take it out. My idea was to select the blue with the quick selection tool, then bring that selection out to the grass, select the grass with that size/shape of selection, copy/paste and then bring the grass selection into the blue part so it looks like grass in what was the blue part.
The problem is I don't seem to be able to move the selection without taking the blue with it (so it's not an empty selection and therefore can't select a piece of the grass.)
I just can't make it work.. I need to use QUICK SELECTION TOOL to select part of image and then cut it out and paste it exactly in the same place. But whenever I do it, that tool automatically add feather to the edge so I can't paste it in same place again!
I already turn on hardness to 100% and I don't see any other options I can alter to eliminate it.
Every time I use Quick selection tool it selects the area which I don't want to use. I have a website called JoGuru Social Travel Network for which I need to edit it's logo. Now since the logo has many green and blue variation I can't select the area I need.
I thought of changing the color of logo so that it looks refined but green color signifies travel and i can't think of using any other color. It would have been easy to pick other color. For me Green is God. I must use that only. I also need to encorporate small road in it that defines journey to infinity. This tool use to work well before. It's giving me problem for the first time.
On one computer when I select my selection tool I have a circle with a + inside or - whichever I choose to select or deselect an object. BUT, on my other computer I have a large cross hair type thing and I can't tell whether I am selecting or deselecting... what the heck is going on!!
View 2 Replies View RelatedThe quick selection tool now doesn't work on the image I'm editing at all. When I try to select only the leaf, the marquee jumps straight to the edge of the photo, effectively selecting the whole of the image and background. Here is a screenshot:

I have a vertical (rectangular) photo that I have pasted into a square canvas. I am looking to expand the photo to the edges of the canvas in a specific way: I want to stretch the edges of the photo (not the whole photo) such that the closer the photo edge is to the edge of the canvas the more stretched it is.

So basically, I created coloured text inside Adobe Illustrator and however much I zoom into the text, the text always appears to have smooth edges. Once I click on 'Save For Web', the edge all around the text becomes rough and aliased. I chose GIF and PNG, but it still happens. The text is on a transparency background. The same problem applies to images when I am creating a logo.
I am using photoshop CS3 to edit some pictures for a catalogue. Usually i cut around the picture, select magic wand, select inverse, and refine edges to soften the pictures jagged edges.
Now all of a sudden refine edges doesnt behave this way! It doesn't do anything! it shows a preview, but once i click ok, nothing happens. I know this has nothing to do with layers as have checked and there is only one, otherwise i wouldnt see a preview either.
One curious thing it does do is, once ok'd, refine edges actually changes my selection field radius to what it would be had i actually refined the edges. But no change to the graphic itself.
I'm using CS3 and I'm applying a feathered edge to a photo using the refine edges command. The only thing I can't for the life of me figure out, is how to get the now white border to be transparent, so that when it's placed into my InDesign document (overlayed onto another photo) the underlaying photo isn't blocked by the white box.

As you can see I've made the selection without any major problems, using the quick selection tool.
The problem starts when I'm using the Refine Edge command, I can't get an acceptable result.

View 1 Replies View RelatedIn PS CS4, I've been working with the "Refine Edge" feature. Or, at least trying to. I open up the feature and I adjust the settings to make the photo look like I want it to. Then I press "OK" and everything disappears. Then, while everything is still selected, I clicked on the pointer arrow to move the selected image to another canvas and the feathering effects don't carry over! Nothing sticks! ? I have a book about Photoshop CS4, but it doesn't tell what to do when something doesn't work right.

Instead it's a circle with a line through it and I can't refine any edges, regardless of what view I select. I have restarted my PC, as well as Photoshop but I can't refine edge. I sent the jpg to another PC with CS6 and it worked just fine.

I realise that most tablet users like changing brush size this way but personally I am more comfortable using the keyboard shortcuts.
Am using CS6 trial with mac Lion.
I display an image and i take quick selection tool and make a circle or some formation and if I paint on either side of the selection I get a very distinct line of where I have paint and it is separated perfectly where the selection is. In other words where I painted it is pure and only the color I painted. and this the way it should be and the brush is 100% opacity. OK this is the easy part..if I take the same selection and do a refine edge on it and make a adjustment in refine edge...ie...move the radius slider or any other control that moves the selection and we will say the selection get larger or smaller does not make any difference and I say OK and then I get back my image and I go to paint it there is always some discoloration within the painted surface it is not even the color is discolored or contaminated...even when I give the command remove contaminated colors it is still there and even on a layer you can see the little square in varying shades of grey...it makes no difference if say get rid of the contaminated colors....I still get that discoloration..

I keep getting horrible grayish tones in the edge of hair. I am attaching a the mask used, the base image and the resulting image and the settings I used in the Refine Edge dialog box.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI remember being able to select anything on the canvas with my Quick Select tool in CS5.5 Photoshop Extended. Recently, making the switch to CC, the Quick Select tool will show my slection as I drag along the canvas, but once I release the mouse, the selection seems to be reduced to the visible pixels. I was intentionally trying to fill the transparent sections with my effects as well.
Mind you, the magic wand will select transparent pixels just fine, but it also adds unintentional sections which is irritating. I should probably also pint out that I already looked into the "lock transparence" option in the layers, but I did not activate anything of the sort.
Is it possible to add an icon for the Refine Edge dialog to the panels icon bar?
