Photoshop :: Memory Need For Vista And Windows7 In...
Aug 17, 2009
I buying a new PC and want to install Vista 64bit and later on go to Windows 7. how much memory will Vista 64bit take and how much will Windows7 take?Think I read somewhere that Vista takes 4Gb (is that right?) and I can live with that for some month but if Windows 64bit take the same I need to consider that and buy needed memory size from the start. Buying DDR3 16000MHz memory and a Intel CPU Core i7 Quard 2.66Ghz. How much is memory recommended for PS or Lightroom or Premiare pro running 64bit mode? So in total; are 6Mb memory enough for both Windows7 64bit and PS or do I need 12 Gb to work with normal speed and without problems.
I am running Photoshop as part of the CS4 Suite on a bootcamped intel mac pro towers using Vista Business with 4 gigs of Memory. We are running in 32 bit mode because of the Apple screw up with Carbon 64 so that both sides of the house windows and mac match.
Photoshop is currently only seeing 1639 MB of the RAM instead of the performance on the Mac of about 3000 MB
So does anyone know what is going on here and how I can get Photoshop and or Vista to recognize most if not all of the RAM installed on these machines.
Specs are below...
Adobe Photoshop Version: 11.0 (11.0x20080919 [20080919.r.488 2008/09/19:02:00:00 cutoff; r branch]) Operating System: Windows Vista 32-bit Version: 6.0 Service Pack 1 System architecture: Intel CPU Family:6, Model:7, Stepping:6 with MMX, SSE Integer, SSE FP, SSE2 Physical processor count: 4 Processor speed: 2793 MHz Video Card: NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT Video Mode: 1680 x 1050 x 4294967296 colors Video Card Driver: nvd3dum.dll,nvwgf2um.dll Driver Version: 7.15.11.8048 Built-in memory: 2037 MB Free memory: 1178 MB Memory available to Photoshop: 1640 MB Memory used by Photoshop: 55 % Image cache levels: 4
if the 32-bit version of Photoshop CS4 can access more than 4 GB of memory if it's running under Vista x64. I'm not sure where the 4 GB limitation enters the picture--if it's the operating system or the application itself.
I've tried to use CS4 x64 as much as possible, but there aren't a lot of plug-ins available for it yet, necessitating the use of the 32-bit version at times.
My computer is a Windows7 SP1 64-bit OS on a 4GB RAM Lenovo system. I have Photoshop CS4 installed in it. I have a strange display problem that started suddenly - I don't know why. Â The brush cursors (which usually look like an open circle) in any of the following tools - Healing Brush, Clone Tool, Eraser, Blur Tool - are disappearing when I start to use them. The tool does function as it is supposed to, but I can't see the Open Circle cursor; the cursor disappears completely. This makes it very difficult to work around fine edges. Â Secondly, any manipulation with the Type Tool doesn't appear on screen immediately. When I type, the Type Tool cursor moves, but no letters/characters appear on screen; same if I use the backspace key to delete something. If I wish to move the Type layer with the Move Tool, it doesn't appear like anything is happening on screen. And yet, the tool does function, because if I minimize the Window and maximize it again, or if I shift between multiple open windows and return to the original window, now the characters appear wherever they are supposed to be. Whatever change I make to the Type layer doesn't appear on screen immediately. I have to switch focus (by visiting another window or minimizing-maximizing the work window) in order to see those changes. Â I know that it is some kind of a display issue. But I can't figure out what or how to rectify it. No other program on my computer is mis-behaving similarly. I have tried completely uninstalling and reinstalling PS CS4, but that didn't work. It doesn't appear to be a RAM issue, because I don't run multiple applications (except Windows Explorer) when working on PS CS4. Â There is NO error message of any kind. The problem simply occurs whenever any functions requires me to manipulate the cursor precisely on screen. Otherwise, for global functions, such as brightness, contrast, level, etc. adjustment or working with layers and so forth, there is no problem.
I have used pretty much all the Illustrator versions from CS2 onward, mainly for typographic work. In the new version I've been using – Illustrator CS6 on Windows 7 – the typography panels are behaving differently from previous versions and it is extremely frustrating!  Character Panel - On previous versions you can click on the font menu in the Character Panel and you get a list with previews, then you can search by scrolling with the mouse wheel or by typing in the name of a font. But in CS6 the mouse wheel doesn't work, you have to click on arrow buttons or move the mouse to the top/bottom of the list to scroll (and it scrolls very slowly!). When you try to type to search, it only lets you type the first letter, not the full font name. So if you're looking for Museo for example, you can only type 'M' then you still have to scroll through all the M's until you find it, if you type 'M' then 'U' (as I would do normally) you are taken to 'U' in the list.Character Context Menu - I use the context menu (the one that lives at the top of the screen) a lot. Again on previous versions it was really quick to click the drop down and just start typing the first few letters in the font name until you see the one you're looking for. In CS6 you can only do a type search when the drop down menu is closed, when you open the drop down, type to search no longer works!Â
I just upgraded to windows 7 and now there is a blank preview window when I try to capture. I have tried capturing in both DV and DVD and no preview. I am capturing via firewire from a VHS. This worked perfectly under windows xp but is not working under 7. It seems that it does capture but I cannot preview in order to find my spot on the tape.
I am trying to install AutoCAD LT 2010 on a new computer with Windows 7 professional 64bit and it is not working. I keep getting error messages that the “System cannot open the device or file specified” after clicking on the setup .exe file when the disc loads and that I need to “download Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Redistributable Package” when trying to install from the acadlt folder and even after downloading C++ 2005, it still won’t work. How to install this version on Windoes7 64bit without all these errors?
I am using corel x3 a long time but never, never had this kind of problem. When i work in corel enviorenment after i have finished my work i go to save my work. But then is the problem It Saves the file with Large Memory on it. let's say if the file normally would be 200 K, now it saves with 3 MB. And if i import some other files in my work then the saved file will be even bigger. If i Delete the files that were imported The Saved File will be Again the same SIZE ! Even if a take one part of the file, let's say if i import only one small text and put it in another file and save it like that, the saved file will be 2 MB. I had a lots of problems, i had saved files on this way with 23-24 MB and when i open them it takes like forever. When you look that file in corel it has nohing in it, absolutely nothing that should be 24 MB. But all of my important work is in that files how to make all things back to normal again,
I do have problem with my newly installed CorelDraw X5. Before X5 we used Corel 12 in our company.
I have project file (150 MB) with lots of text, bitmaps, vectors - about 100 pages. File opens but I can't save it. I always get OUT OF MEMORY error. I even tried to divide this file into 2 smaller parts but still doesn't work.
What I noticed - Corel X5 after clean start (without opened project) takes about 80MB of RAM in task manager. When I open project usage changes from 80MB to 1,2GB. While saving it takes 1,6GB of RAM and it crashes.
To compare - Corel 12 and after opening same project file Corel 12 takes much less of memory - about 770MB and it works without problem.Â
when I try to open an existing file or create a new one -- the application will shut down unexpectedly and without warning. But I also experience application errors: 'Instruction at "0x1a3c4b6b" referenced at memory "0x00000028" Memory could not be read.
I am running Vista x64 Ultimate on a QX6850 system with 8GB of RAM. I also have 2x XFX8800GT graphics cards running in SLi with the latest Nvidia drivers (181.20). Dxdiag testing provides no errors.
The GPU support features in CS4 x64 (and x32) is greyed out with the text wording of no support in Photoshop standard. Based on some of the threads posted here, I tried enabling or disabling some settings in the Nvidia control panel, but the only one that seem to enable the GPU support is to deactivate SLi completely (which sort of defeats the purpose in 3D graphics).
Does CS4 support an SLi setup? If not, will there be any difference in performance with SLi disabled and using the CS4 GPU support vs the other way around?
Service Pack 1 for Vista is available. I just installed it. Other than it reset the native resolution on my main monitor, it went without a hitch.
Recently, it seems, that Vista has been lamb-basted (what does that actually mean) as a nasty OS. It is not, I have been using Vista Ultimate 32/64 without incident. SP1 is no larger than SP1 for XP (in ratio to installation size).
Any one who says that you should choose XP over Vista for a new computer installation is nuts.
Vista is a fine OS, having used it for the last 10 months I can confirm that is rock stable. I now use the 64 bit version exclusively, it has matured very quickly and is a great way to run a system.
Under Vista Ultimate I cannot get Photoshop CS3 Extended to run, it will open up and then just sit......Adobe Bridge CS3 2.0.0975 opens and works just fine. So does Lightroom 1.41.
I even tried opening PS from these programs, but just the same.
I then installed Corel Paint Shop Pro X2 and that works perfect too.
I have tried removing and reinstalling, repaired and updated but it makes no difference. It will install and also do the repair just fine. Changing the compatible mode and appearance to Windows Classic (from Aero) makes no difference. I am the only user and administrator.
Has anyone with basically this type of system been able to get Photoshop CS3 Extended (after having these problems) up and running?
PC information: AMD Phenom 9950 Quad-Core Processor 1.61 GHz 8.00 GB Memory 64-bit Operating System Western Digital VelociRaptor WD3000GLFS 300GB 10000 RPM 16MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive Vista Ultimate Version 6.0 (Build 6001:ServicePack 1)
I've installed Vista 64 Business on a AMD AM2+ platform with a Athlon Dual Core CPU (BE 5000). When installing CS3 Photoshop everything seems to be fine, no error messages during the install.
I try to start Photoshop...it won't open. The Photoshop gray screen comes up with the menu at top, but then it just sits there. Once I got the window with the serial number input, but after entering the number it stopped as well. The only way to close Photoshop is with the Task Manager.
I've tried different installations: Photoshop on a new Vista installation without having any other programs installed (no FW or AV), on a installation with different other applications running and so on. Everytime I get the same result: gray screen and stop!
I have been using this combination successfully for over a month when it changed. I tried to open CS4 normally and got the error message "Could not open a scratch file because the file is locked. Use the Properties command in the Windows explorer to unlock the file". This error message is then followed by : "could not initialize Photoshop because the file is locked. Use the Properties command in the Windows explorer to unlock the file".
I am using PhotoShop CS3 Extended along with MS Vista. for some reason when I open more then one image or file at a time, I recieve a message saying Photoshop has stopped working and then it closes out of Photoshop.
I've just installed a fresh copy of Windows Vista Business last night. After installing Photoshop CS3 however, I noticed a very serious lag issue. I looked into the problem a bit on google and this forum but did not reach a solution.
In general, the issues are as follows:
1. Opening and closing even the smallest of files takes a ridiculous amount of time. 2. Moving the mouse cursor over the toolbar or menubar requires up to 3 seconds before a response is received. 3. Right click menu requires up to 3 seconds to appear 4. Application of any tools shows a noticeable delay of action.
The most common suggestion is the "Network Printer" solution, which was not helpful to everyone including me. I also tried to change the performance settings and the cache level according to the optimization guide on this site, that also did not solve the problem.
I tried to run the software in XP pro SP2 compatibility mode, did not make a difference in performance. Disabling all the graphic options for Vista such as Aero Experience also was useless.
I'm just wondering as to whether we ever did reach a solution to resolve the issue or is this problem still left hanging?
CS3 ran fine before my upgrade from XP Pro SP2, I do not believe my hardware specs have anything to do with the lag issue. Yet, I'll leave it below just in case you guys need it as reference...

I have been running Photoshop CS Version 8.0 under Vista for 5 months when all of a sudden I cannot finishing loading Photoshop. It hangs after displaying the message "Reading Text Global Resources...done". I uninstalled and re-installed Photoshop in another directory but it still hangs. Does anyone have a clue as to what could be the problem? Is it a Vista problem or is it an environmental problem? I have 4 gig of memory and 200 gig of free disk space. In a nutshell I cannot get Photoshop to finishing loading.
I just bought Photoshop CS2 (the Polish version) on the internet. I am trying to install it on my HP Pavilion dv7-1080ew laptop. I can't get past the end part of the installation process, though. When it gets to registering (the very last part of installing), it starts rolling back the changes. I turned off my AV, tried running it as administrator, in compatibility mode for XP... still doesn't work. Is anyone else having this problem?
I'm having a little trouble with CS2 droplets. They work fine on one of my PCs with windows XP but when I try to use them on a machine with Vista a message comes up 'Photoshop CS2 has stopped working' This also happens when I double click on the droplet.
I have downloaded the trial version of PhotoShop CS3 but when I try to install it unzips ok from the initial setup file, but then when I go into the created folder on the desktop and run the setup program in there a dialog box appears, nothing else happens, then it disappears after a few seconds. The process for it appears then disappears in Task Manager also.
CS4 and my 64bit system. I mostly work with files in the 1-2MB range, not large by any means. I will process 2 or 3 photos, and close them.. no problem. But every 3rd or 4th photo, when I open the file, or try to resize/crop it, I get the dreaded "not responding" message and end up waiting 30 seconds to a minutes for PS to come back alive. Obviously this is extremely disruptive to my workflow. I have gone so far as to wipe my system clean, but still experience the same problem. It is a fairly consistent issue that always happens when I process multiple photos. Anyone else experiencing similar problems? Is there some obvious solution I am missing? My specs are as follows.. Intel iCore 7 2.66 Mhz9GB DDR3ATI Radeon 4850 512MB Windows Vista Ultimate 64-bitPS CS4 Extended (with 11.1 update)
I recently purchased a new computer with MS Vista. I installed my Photoshop fine and all, and added the dds plugin. When I went to open up a dds file in Photoshop, the program will either shut down right away, or will show an error saying I need Photoshop 3.0 or hgher. I have Photoshop 5.5 (yes, I know I should update, but I have different things I need to spend my $$$ on right now).
I have a new PC runnig with Vista 64. I have installed 8Gb RAM and all PS can allocate at %100is 3255MB. Is that normal? I've thought it should allocate 4Gb.
I replaced an older HP Pavilion (Windows XP OS) with a new Pavilion with 64-bit Vista Home Premium. Photoshop CS3 seems to install okay, but when I launch the application I get a blank screen with a "not responding" message. I've tried re-installing, updating, etc., but still get the same results. Bridge opens up just fine.Since I read that CS4 has native 64-bit support, I thought I might have better luck with that. But I'd like to be sure before I open the upgrade software package.Any thoughts, or similar experience? Also, I would probably uninstall PS3 again before installing the update since CS3 doesn't launch anyway. I don't need CS3 to be on the computer, do I, as long as I have the serial number? Thanks for any help and/or suggestions. I'm looking forward to being able to use Photoshop again, especially on the new computer (8 gb memory, ATI Radeon HD 3200 Graphics, AMD Phenom X4 9650 Quad Core Processor).
