Illustrator :: Typography Interface In AI CS6 (Windows7)
Jun 5, 2013
I have used pretty much all the Illustrator versions from CS2 onward, mainly for typographic work. In the new version I've been using – Illustrator CS6 on Windows 7 – the typography panels are behaving differently from previous versions and it is extremely frustrating!
Character Panel - On previous versions you can click on the font menu in the Character Panel and you get a list with previews, then you can search by scrolling with the mouse wheel or by typing in the name of a font. But in CS6 the mouse wheel doesn't work, you have to click on arrow buttons or move the mouse to the top/bottom of the list to scroll (and it scrolls very slowly!). When you try to type to search, it only lets you type the first letter, not the full font name. So if you're looking for Museo for example, you can only type 'M' then you still have to scroll through all the M's until you find it, if you type 'M' then 'U' (as I would do normally) you are taken to 'U' in the list.Character Context Menu - I use the context menu (the one that lives at the top of the screen) a lot. Again on previous versions it was really quick to click the drop down and just start typing the first few letters in the font name until you see the one you're looking for. In CS6 you can only do a type search when the drop down menu is closed, when you open the drop down, type to search no longer works!
I am loosing way too much quality when exporting to PNG or "saving for Web" using either AI or PS.best way to create a simple typography Logo and save it in a high quality for web.
I understand there might be some loss of quality doing it the way I am currently, but it is so bad it looks awful on a retina screen (i-phone).
My computer is a Windows7 SP1 64-bit OS on a 4GB RAM Lenovo system. I have Photoshop CS4 installed in it. I have a strange display problem that started suddenly - I don't know why.
The brush cursors (which usually look like an open circle) in any of the following tools - Healing Brush, Clone Tool, Eraser, Blur Tool - are disappearing when I start to use them. The tool does function as it is supposed to, but I can't see the Open Circle cursor; the cursor disappears completely. This makes it very difficult to work around fine edges.
Secondly, any manipulation with the Type Tool doesn't appear on screen immediately. When I type, the Type Tool cursor moves, but no letters/characters appear on screen; same if I use the backspace key to delete something. If I wish to move the Type layer with the Move Tool, it doesn't appear like anything is happening on screen. And yet, the tool does function, because if I minimize the Window and maximize it again, or if I shift between multiple open windows and return to the original window, now the characters appear wherever they are supposed to be. Whatever change I make to the Type layer doesn't appear on screen immediately. I have to switch focus (by visiting another window or minimizing-maximizing the work window) in order to see those changes.
I know that it is some kind of a display issue. But I can't figure out what or how to rectify it. No other program on my computer is mis-behaving similarly. I have tried completely uninstalling and reinstalling PS CS4, but that didn't work. It doesn't appear to be a RAM issue, because I don't run multiple applications (except Windows Explorer) when working on PS CS4.
There is NO error message of any kind. The problem simply occurs whenever any functions requires me to manipulate the cursor precisely on screen. Otherwise, for global functions, such as brightness, contrast, level, etc. adjustment or working with layers and so forth, there is no problem.
I buying a new PC and want to install Vista 64bit and later on go to Windows 7. how much memory will Vista 64bit take and how much will Windows7 take?Think I read somewhere that Vista takes 4Gb (is that right?) and I can live with that for some month but if Windows 64bit take the same I need to consider that and buy needed memory size from the start. Buying DDR3 16000MHz memory and a Intel CPU Core i7 Quard 2.66Ghz. How much is memory recommended for PS or Lightroom or Premiare pro running 64bit mode?So in total; are 6Mb memory enough for both Windows7 64bit and PS or do I need 12 Gb to work with normal speed and without problems.
I just upgraded to windows 7 and now there is a blank preview window when I try to capture. I have tried capturing in both DV and DVD and no preview. I am capturing via firewire from a VHS. This worked perfectly under windows xp but is not working under 7. It seems that it does capture but I cannot preview in order to find my spot on the tape.
I am trying to install AutoCAD LT 2010 on a new computer with Windows 7 professional 64bit and it is not working. I keep getting error messages that the “System cannot open the device or file specified” after clicking on the setup .exe file when the disc loads and that I need to “download Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Redistributable Package” when trying to install from the acadlt folder and even after downloading C++ 2005, it still won’t work. How to install this version on Windoes7 64bit without all these errors?
Any way to make CS6's interface white? The slider in the preferences goes from "black" to "pale grey"; I've been using Illustrator since 2000 or so and am kinda used to the white.
Any and all ways are welcome, from setting secret preferences up to and including hacking the files. Because man I am liking what the performance improvements do to heavy operations like distorting a pattern fill but this grey UI is maddeningly low-contrast.
I dont like how in illustrator there is a window where your project is and all the panels for the program are strewn across your desktop. I like the photoshop style better where the entire program is contained in one window. Is there a way to make it like this? What is the advantage of the other way?
I am on Win 7, 64-bit, 20 gb RAM. Using CS 6 (Cloud).
I have this strange shadow that looks like a pop-out menu once occupied that space, on my interface background.
It will not go away permanently. Everyday when I first start Illustrator, I have to go to Preferences==>User Interface and change the background color.
That makes it go away temporarily. But when I restart, it comes right back.
I can see myself getting progressively better and better at graphics. I'm starting to "THINK IN LAYERS", and using advanced photo editing effects in order to achieve what I'm lookin for.
My problem as of late is that, as SOON as I add text to images, it seems to ruin them. It could be the placement, font face, kerning, alignment, or just the fact that it's not sharp or smooth enough, depending on the size. Does anyone have tips for using fonts/text on an image. Have you found ways to get professional quality text, aside from the artistic aspect of it?
How do you choose fonts to go with various images? Do you just cycle through the ones you got until you find what looks right? Or for certain things do you generally use a set of fonts, like this font that font and another font to use usually when making an ad (or go more specifically? and go for ceratin fonts when the subject matter is cars, as opposed to nature, as opposed to computers, as opposed to people etc.). Are there guides to choosing fonts that I just can't find? General fonts used with fantasy artwork, general fonts used with sci-fi artwork, fonts used with something else more broad or more specific?
And how would a knowledge of typography help exactly with choosing fonts, or would it help?
I'm just asking this out of pure curiosity, sort of... And the fact that I'm not too fond of trying to pick out fonts for an image/sig/something by having to cycle through all of the fonts that I have. I'm just wonderin' if, when I'm working on something more on the fantasy side, a certain group of fonts generally look better, or when with something else, another set of fonts generally look better.
I find the default interface in CS6 difficult to read as the menu/tool labels seem very small to me. I can manipulate via Windows, but then the fonts in the windows of all my other apps are too big.
Is there a way to change the size of the fonts in labels in the user interface within Illustrator itself? I thought there used to be a way in preferences some where, but that was a long time ago - maybe even pre-CS?
First I was working in the white background when I did brush strokes to the typography. But i don't realize until I saved it for the png format that I was applying the brush strokes other than needed. Here the snapshot of the work.
Remove the white strokes from the blue background without deleting from that black letter!
When I toggle the interface on/off it causes missing menu toolbar items and icons until I exit and restart Photoshop CS4. I know this can happen if problem filters are installed. So I have the latest Alien Skin filters installed and have already followed their AutoLayer2.8li file updates to resolve Windows Photoshop CS4 issues. I also have Luxology imageSynth 2.0 filter installed. So since all my filters are updated to CS4 compatible versions, I shouldn't have this problem but yet it occurs. I'm using WinXP SP2, 4 GB RAM, GeForce GTX 260 Core 216 with newest 185.85 driver. I have 3D canvas rotation turned on.
The interface for PS CS4 is missing its bar at the bottom and the Windows Task Bar is no longer visible. Can someone please tell me how to return the interface to its default condition?
I just recently upgraded from CS2 to CS4 and am finding it changed enough that it's slowing me down. I have a couple questions I hope someone can answer.
What is bothering me the most is that when I left click over an image I no longer can duplicate it, or change its size. I'm stuck with going to the menus and that takes longer than what I'm used to.
I've also been unable to figure out how to split the properties panels that now want to form two columns instead of one, and I haven't figured out how to break any given panel up and use only the part I want.
I know I triggered something someway, but didn't realize. The original interface had the bar with the FILE, EDIT, VIEW, ETC at the top. Now it is hidden until I move my cursor to the top of the page. It then drops down for me to make selections. I personally prefer the original method where it was at the top stationary. Don't know how to change this.
I can't get access to the tools at the bottom shown in this screen shot.It is actually at the bottom of the row below the Links option that is cut off. So I can't attach the chin to the head!
In CS5 I have the interface set up so that the windows dock but when there are no windows open you can see the desktop.
In CS6 there is this big ugly black panel on show all the time Have tried to compare the setting but cannot see any options that are fundermentally different.
Can I remove this background and if so how to do this.
