The computer is a new HP desktop with Windows 7 Home Premium Service Pack 1 operating system. My Elements 8 does everything I need except for the photo sharing so I don't really want to purchase a new version.

i saved the psd file last night and closed my computer, today morning i woke up and found this file "unopenable" then i found out it said that file space on disk is 0. and when i tried to open it again it says file location not found. then i restarted my pc. and the file was gone, i tried to find it with the search function and i only found a shortcut file with no valid source. i dont know what caused this, if it was photoshops fault or the computers fault, anyone know anything i can do to recover this file?
When I first installed Adobe Photoshop CS6 I was unable to run Photoshop or Bridge CS6. Photoshop would give me an error about "could not open a scratch file because the file is locked. If I ran either of these programs as an administrator they would run without issue, this led me to believe that there was a permission issue somewhere. After some digging I found out the both Bridge and Photoshop try to create a temp file (similiar to Photoshop Temp2777223910092) on the c: drive of the computer. In my case the user that I was logged in with did not have access to write to the root of the C: drive. Note that you run the program as the administrator and change the scratch disk location as that changes the preference for the administrator user and not the user that you are currently logged in as.
I first had to give the user that I was logged on with write permissions to the root of the C: drive. Next try and run Photoshop, you will get an error another error about the scratch disk and about and invalid or missing setting file. To correct this you need to have run Photoshop as an administrator, next you can go to Users AdminAppDataRoamingAdobeAdobe Photoshop CS6Adobe Photoshop CS6 Settings and copy Adobe Photoshop CS6 Prefs and/or Adobe Photoshop X64 CS6 Prefs to Users<your logged in username>AppDataRoamingAdobeAdobe Photoshop CS6.Adobe Photoshop CS6 Settings.
I have been working on a file for the last few weeks and save on a very regular basis and also have the autosvae option selected in preferences but Photoshop has crashed and completely deleted the file off the face of the earth?
I am working on a very important project and have a design session very soon and am now left with no .psd file to work with? I have looked for it everywhere and there isn't anything?

I suddenly can't use my Photoshop CS5. In the middle of working on it, I suddenly got an error message saying "Could not initialize Photoshop because the preferences file was invalid. (It has been deleted.) I tried uninstalling and reinstalling PS but still get the same message. Now PS won't even open up.

View 3 Replies View Relatedmy setup has 128gb ssd (C) which contains only my OS files with some junction points to Program Files/Program Files(x86)/ProgramData/Users which are located in my D drive which is a 1TB WD.
at first it showed when I tried to start PS for the first time after a clean install on a new computer I managed to get past it by runing PS as admin and changing the scratch disk to D.but now I noticed that when I try to copy a path from illustrator into photoshop as either a smart object or as pixels I get this error again. I haven't seen it again other then that but I just started using PS in this setup so I am yet to explore all the functions and whether they are working correctly or not.
when ran as an administrator the illustrator->PS transfer works fine but I don't want to run PS as admin all the time...
I'm running OS 10.8.5 using PS CS5.1. My mac was left on overnight (not sure how relevant that is) and when opening up PS this morning it crashed with the message 'end of file encountered' 'preferences file is invalid/has been deleted'
I've read up on a few older posts about the same thing. I uninstalled/reinstalled from disk but the same thing happens.
my photoshop cs6 will not start because preference file was somehow deleted.

View 2 Replies View RelatedPSE users have posted questions about removing deleted folders from the PSE catalog since version 5 or 6. Back in 2009, the recommendation was to delete only in PSE. However, I manage my folders, backups, and archives in Windows, because I prefer the interface and use other tools. This causes me to have many grayed-out folders in the PSE catalog. As each new version comes out, I hope this will get fixed, with no luck so far. Are there any new features in version 11 that make this possible? Is there any hope that a future versions will allow the user to clean up the catalog, or synchronize automatically to the real folder structure?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI purchased a new computer today and also purchased PSE 12 (I had PSE 10 running on a different machine/laptop). On the laptop/PSE 10, I had about 20,000 digital on an external drive (all were tagged according to color, theme, etc via the PSE organizer). All of the elements were stored on the external drive under a folder called "digital kits". I used the PSE 10 backup utility to backup my catalog to ease the move to my new machine. After I performed the backup, I renamed the "digital kits" folder to "digital kits-glw" because I intended to just move the external hard drive to the new computer and restore the catalog to the same path, “E:digital kits”, as I have other software that is dependent upon that path.
The restore went pretty quickly, and I can see the correct folder structure within PSE 12 Organizer, but all I have is a bunch of blank thumbnails. Upon closer inspection, the restore did NOT recreate the E:digital kits folder on the hard drive as I expected. Worse, the E:digital kits-glw folder is virtually empty (just a handful of thumb.db files). So, it appears the backup process deleted/hijacked all of my files. (Note: I did NOT verify the contents of the digital kits folder before I renamed it.) Tech support is closed until Monday, and I’m just sick over the possibility of losing all that data, so I’m turning to you all.(I have a backup of the data, but without the catalog piece I would have to re-catalog all 20,000 elements!)
After changing preferences, plug in views, etc I get a message the file is locked and changes won't be saved. Even after unlocking, adding myself as user with read/write privileges, changes are not saved when PS is closed.
View 11 Replies View RelatedI am creating an image in Photoshop CS6. I've saved it a few times but now it's telling me the file is locked. I resaved it as something else and now the original file has vanished!
I looked at the properties of the file before it vanished and clicked the security tab and it told me I didn't have permission to view it and I had to be an administrative user, which I am. It gave the option of giving myself permission and said the previous owner may no longer have permission but there was no previous owner listed (obviously because there never was one).
These files are very important, I can't risk them just vanishing or locking me out. Why is this happening and how can I stop it?
I was sent a jpg image via email, made a correction and put it on our network for another colleague to open. When she tried to open it, the following message below came up and I cant rectify the problem and open it on my colleagues machine.
View 6 Replies View Relatedgot my new computer---AMD Athlon 64 X2 6000+ CPU, 4 GB RAM, two 1 TB SATA hard disks (logical drives C:, D:, and E: on first physical hard disk; drives F: and G: and the second). Operating system is Windows XP SP2.
When I installed Photoshop CS3 10.0.1, I did not enter the serial number immediately in order to enjoy the CS3 Extended trial period (my serial number is for CS3 Standard). Eventually the trial period expired, and I entered my serial number. No problems until here.
Today I deactivated the Photoshop copy on the old machine and activated it on the new one, and that's when the problem started. Now Photoshop won't work anymore. It worked fine prior to activation.
Or actually, it
i does
work ... but only when drive C: is selected as the primary scratch disk which under Windows obviously is a bad choice. But Photoshop won't let me choose anything different. Whenever I try to deselect C: from the list of active scratch disks (remove the tick mark) or to change the order of active scratch disks so that C: is not the topmost anymore then Photoshop will refuse to re-launch.
Instead, upon re-launch it will display a message box (with 'Adobe Photoshop CS3' as the title bar and an OK button as the only option) saying, 'Could not initialize Photoshop because the file is locked. Use the "Properties" command in the Windows Explorer to unlock the file.' Of course, it doesn't bother to say what file it is talking about, or what 'locked' is supposed to mean. Explorer's 'Property' command does not provide any means to 'lock' or to 'unlock' a file. To get out of this situation, I have to delete Photoshop's preferences file which leaves me where I started, i. e. with drive C: as the primary scratch disk. I can always add more drives to the list of active scratch disks. But I must not remove C: from the top of that list or Photoshop won't work anymore.
But I want Photoshop to use G: as the scratch disk. It worked fine that way until I carried out the $#!%@ activation procedure!
I was trying to get rid of text and change it. I have no clue how to use this product but thought I would mess around with it. I think I really messed up.
