Photoshop Elements :: Color Banding After Saving File
May 24, 2013I've encountered a problem when using layers to add a watermark. After adding the watermark I'm finding the photograph becomes distorted.

View 17 RepliesUsing CS6, I created a sky gradient on a new layer, then imported some photos to other layers for a composite. Then I noticed horizontal banding of varying widths in the sky area of the gradient. When I use the Move Tool to move the gradient layer around, the bands move along in a fixed position, so it's not my monitor. When I Option-click on the gradient layer eyeball icon to make just that layer visible, there is no banding on the screen, just a smooth gradient as it should be.
I have never noticed this happening before. What causes it and what can I do about it?
I have a problem with color banding in Photoshop CS6 while zoomed out, even though I am working in 16 bit. Here is a crop of the same area of a .psd while open in Photoshop CS6 (left) and in Illustrator CS5 (right).
The banding is quite apparent in PS while not present in Illustrator. At 100% zoom there is little banding in PS, and converting to 8 bit makes it look markedly worse. However at 25% zoom (which these crops were taken at) converting to 8 bit makes no visible difference, making me think that Photoshop's zoom is working at 8 bit for some reason.
Since the image looks fine in Illustrator I'm pretty sure it's not a problem with my display, or graphics card/driver. I've tried changing the color profile (currently set to Adobe RGB) in Photoshop without effect. I've also tried changing the 'Graphics Processor' level in Photoshop, including disabling it entirely, as well as reducing the cache level to '1' without effect either. I'm not quite sure why Illustrator is able to handle the image so nicely at all zoom levels while Photoshop introduces all this banding.
I'm on an old laptop, PS 5.5. I have a properly exposed iso 1800 D600 jpgcaptured in adobe rgb color space.I use camera raw to open this picture in photopro space and 16 bits to avoid banding and yet if I lift the curve a tiny bit or any other brightening trickimmediately there is banding. What?
View 15 Replies View RelatedGradient and color banding are very apparent and exaggerated until I zoom in to 66.6%. It even hangs for a split second as if it is solving a new render at a higher quality. This is getting frustrating as I've found myself manually trying to clean up issues that actually aren't there when I zoom in close enough. These issues are expecially obvious when working with skin using several degrunge techniques and dodge and burn on a softlight layer. It does not seem to matter what display I use.
If I commit all adjustments to a new layer the problem goes away. I'm working on a Eurocom Panther 3 running Windows 7 64 Ultimate. I have a hex core Intel processor and 2 Nvidia 580m in SLI, though I am aware that is not used in Photoshop.
Recently, I updated my LR3 to LR4.3 and my camera from Olympus EP2 to OMD. So, I am not sure if any of these factors play a role but, I started having severe banding on photos taken in vivid sunny day with a blue sky. I am not an advanced LR user and, my process of developing photos in LR has always been pretty simple. First, I export RAW format pictures from a card to a hard drive. Then, I do some adjustments and make two jpeg copies from each RAW file.
One copy I in Export dialog box File Settings as a JPEG, Color Space sRGB, 100% quality and another copy I export for web so, I limit to some minimum size without setting any quality reductions.
Again, in the Export dialog box -> File Setting -> check (checkbox) Limit File Size to 300KB to 1MB. In this sample case, file was farely large so, LR did not allow me to save this file in less than 950KB. URL....
I understand how each time you save a JPG file, there is a loss of information (assuming you closed between Saves) even if you Save with Quality=12. However can you do the following to avoid losing information between saves?
- save as both a JPG and a PSD
- if you want to make another change, open the PSD (instead of the JPG) and make the desired mods
- save as both a JPG and a PSD again
I believe the resulting JPG has basically been updated only once, as opposed to twice if you had made the second set of mods by opening the JPG from the first set of mods. You could continue to do this as many times as you wanted, and the last JPG created would technically have only been updated once (always from the latest PSD), thereby avoiding loss of information from multiple saves.
I'm trying to determine a way of color banding my point files so that different ranges of elevations are visually represented by different colors. See example below that I believe was done with a different software program.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have downloaded PE 12 & for some reason its Editor is not saving any changes I made despite ticking all relevant save boxes. It behaves very strangely - it does save 1 photo & then it stops saving . I was thinking it might be an interference with a previous PE11 versio - so I have deleted it from my PC - but it did not work. As a result it is useless for me - as I can process photos in my editor but as it does not save any changes

When I have a file in Illustrator that I want to save as or export as a PDF or JPEG whenever I save it the colours shift and the quality drops. Most noticiably black boxes goes to a muddy brown when saved to JPEGS, but I have also noticed tones in Photographs change quite a lot when saving as PDF.
I have tried to tweek every type of setting there is. higher resoulution, compression, sampling, down sampling, PDF preset, print quality etc.but nothing seems to sort it out. PDF's arent as much as a problem as the JPEG but the only way I have managed to get a PDF up to a reasonable standard is by wacking everything up so there is no compression or downsampling which makes ginat files I cant email....
Im sure the problem probably lies within the combination of each of these together but I cant seem to find out what that is. Also brown in the seat base has gone more orange and the whole picture has generaly lost quality.
Since a day or two my PSE 8 crashes when i want to save or open a file.It just closes without a crash reporter.
View 17 Replies View RelatedI'm using Lightroom 4..i've been importing my RAW images from my external harddrive. Some show up in the catalog as ruined with a blank white section and color bands. I've checked the actual image on the external hard drive and it is fine. I've deleted the ruined files from the LR catalog, then re-imported those problem ones... still come in as white with banding. I've even tried deleting them from the catalog, then from the hard drive... then back onto the HD from the camera, then back into lightroom. Some look ok until I look at then in loupe view and the same problem happens. Mean while the images on the HD and on the camera's CF card are fine.
View 5 Replies View RelatedAfter updating the file title in a jpeg file, does PSE save the title by recompressing the file using the jpeg compression algorithm or does it simply update the file title without recompressing the file? Prgressive saves of unaltered files suggest that PSE is recompressing the file each time it is saved.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have started editing photos using the Photo Fix Options in Instant Fix. I have then switched to Photo Editor to fine tune my edited picture. When I use save or save as, to save the edited picture both the edited and original appear in the files. If I start in in Photo Editor and save there is an option to uncheck that reads "Save in version set with Original" However I am more comfortable with beginning in Instant Fix and then switching to photo editor. For some reason when I go to save after switching from Instant fix to Photo editor the uncheck feature is no longer available. step by step instructions to save revised photo afterusing Instant Fix first then Photo Editor.

I had my automatic save set up for every 10 minutes but files were not being saved regularly. I deleted files from the Temp folder thinking it was full and now there are no .sv$ saving at all. How can I make drawings save automatically every 10 minutes?
Background info:
We got several image files every 2 weeks which should be edited and mainly reduced in size for web purpose. This work needs 1 work day for one man/woman to do, because he/she has to open the file save for web and then set the quality to a value were the file is nearly about 150-200 KB in size.
The images are different, some have few colors, some have a lot of colors and there are also different in resolution. But they should not be reduced in resolution, only in quality. All other specs of the image should be kept
Is there any possible script, plug-in or similar which can do the same (Saving with a specific max. file size) in some automatic and faster way?
Using Photoshop CS5 -- I saved a Photoshop file I created as a .pdf file but some of the areas on the .pdf file (specifically, sections of text) do not have any of the color/fill information, they are just white (blank areas). I've seen this before when converting other Photoshop files and could not find a work around. I tried saving with various compression levels (max, high, med) and it makes no difference.
View 12 Replies View Relatedwhen I save an image for the Web, I notice a significant difference in the color of the saved image and the one I originally designed in Photoshop.
The saved image seems faded, washed out, while the one I made in Photoshop looks crisp, clean, and very colorful.
I have spent a great deal of time fiddling with the tools and setting in the Save for Web dialogue box, but I can't seem to overcome this problem.
I would appreciate any suggestions or advice anyone has. Have you experienced this problem and figured out how to solve it?
NOTE: I wanted to add that I just recently installed a new scanner, and it was only after installing the scanner that I started to get the following warning message whenever I open Photoshop:
The monitor profile "" appears to be defective. Please rerun your monitor calibration software.
I thought I should mention this, because the Adobe website recommends that I reset my monitor calibration using an application called Adobe Gamma. Anyone know where I can get this Adobe Gamma program?
Also, I have never had to set my monitor calibration settings.
I've run into a problem that I'm sure has been a popular one for many. I recently edited a photo of mine in Photoshop CS5 and when I save it to JPEG format and open it, the color is completely different. I've searched the web but for me solutions hasn't worked such as using sRGB and changing the working spaces to adobe RGB (1998). Both of which hasn't worked.
View 18 Replies View RelatedSuspect that there may be a horribly complex solution to this invoving diving into Preferences, hiring monitor colour calibratrion gear etc, etc. Anyway here goes...
When I save files the appearance of the colour in the original pic changes when I view it in the 'Save for Web' window and it outputs the file in the preview colour.
The Save For Web Preset window shows '[Unnamed]' however changing it to 'Original' or one of the other settings (ie 'JPEG High') makes no difference. Much headscratching going on.....
