Photoshop :: Advantages Of Multi Processor Systems?

Jul 31, 2008

I am considering getting a new system to use for my photo processing applications. I see that Adobe has releases LR v2.0 which supports 64 bit OS and has announced that CS4, when ever it is released will also support 64 bits, well at least for Windows. This being the case, switching to Vista 64 seems to be the way to go. BUT what about the processor? The choices seem to be a quad core version from either Intel or AMD or moving higher, a Intel Xeon processor. This gives me two more choices, use two 5100 series processors for a total of four cores or go up to two 5400 series processors for a total of eight cores. The 5100 series approach seems to use less power that the 5400's and can be clocked faster. Also, last year I had the opportunity to quickly run a bench mark with CS3 on a Dell dual Xeon workstation running Windows XP 32 bit OS. It appeared that the the system only managed to make use of only 4 of the 8 processors.

I have done a fair amount of searching and have not found any good answers to the question of which processor configuration will give the best performance. To keep this discussion reasonable I would like to limit it to one quad core processor vs. two dual core Xeons vs. two quad core Xeons.

Photoshop :: Cleanest Multi-processor Install?

Mar 13, 2012

I recently purchased a dual Xeon 3.0Ghz Quad-core Dell T7400 Precision Workstation (used) with 32GB of RAM.

I ran some testing before moving all of my software to the new machine, and it very quickly became clear that the system had some stability issues which I eventually attributed to the discovery that the 2 processors were not a matched pair (different builds and stepping levels).  My first thought was to remove the older one and use the system with a single processor before finding a match for that remaining processor and installing it.

But then it occurred to me that I might also have to reinstall my OS (Windows 7 Ultimate), Creative Suite DP5 and all (or some) of my other software after installing that second processor, since both Windows and Photoshop check for the number of processors at installation and so will origianlly be set up to run on a single processor machine, not a dual.

I like to run as clean a system as possible (NO unnecessary software, etc.), so besides the unpleasant prospect of the double investment of time (installation, uninstallation and then reinstallation of the OS and 10 -15 other applications), I'm also concerned about junk that might be left over, either in the registry or elsewhere, after all of that installing, uninstalling and reinstalling.

for optimal future use (and Photoshop CS5 is probably 80+% of what I'll do on this workstation) should I: Go ahead and install the OS, CS5 and other software and start to use the new (single processor) computer now and then just add the second processor when I find one at a decent price, orKeep using my current workstation until I have a matched pair of processors for the new machine.  Then, AFTER installing that matched pair, install the OS and application software and begin to use the new machine.

I am anxious to switch to the new machine and jump from 4GB of RAM to 32GB, but if starting with a single processor and then adding a second one in a week or a month will cost me either stability or performance down the road, it's not worth it.

Photoshop :: ImageReady Advantages

Apr 22, 2004

I recently began trying to assembly my interface into a table using Slices in Imageready. I have been using notepad to edit my html and organize my pages.

But I recently bought a copy of Dreamweaver and began teaching myself that as well. My question is: is it worth it to continue using Imageready to create tables, rollovers, etc if I plan on ultimately using Dreamweaver to handle my site, or should I scrap Imageready and focus entirely on Dreamweaver.

I know its best to use a Notepad to edit html starting out, but my site will probably end up being big and I'm going to need some sort of software to manage it. I'm also ignorant as to any inherent advantages Imageready may have that would possibly make it more valuable that Dreamweaver when it comes to rollovers, tables, etc?

Photoshop :: The Advantages Of Grouping Layers Regarding Outlining And Aligning And Such?

Aug 21, 2007

encouterd some remarks about the alignment and outlining of your layers in your group.. I get the impression that you should group the relevant layers, so that its easier to align them or clip them of outline them or whatever.. Which would be great, because Im always having difficulties with shape layers that go outside their bounds.. and adding multiple clipping masks seem to be a lot of work..

Photoshop :: Advantages Of Storing Images In TIFF, TIFF LZW And TIFF JPEG?

Jul 5, 2004

I am cleaning up the Hard Drive on my Mac G4. My scanned images are taking a great portion of the 80 Gig drive. I finished clearing my external drive by removing nearly 60 gigs of images by storing them on DVD. I will do the same for the Mac drive.

My trouble is that all my images are stored in TIFF format which takes up enormous space no matter the storage. Since I output images in various sizes, mainly prints, to 30 x 40 inches, I need a master image archived in the best format for such. However, I do not want to fill my drives, or DVD, with large files. Code:

AutoCAD Civil 3D :: Using Multiple Coordinate Systems At Once

Jul 14, 2012

I'm finding myself on more and more sites that use multiple coordinate systems and height datums.

We have 3 on this job. One is the MGA zone 50 GDA94, another is just an offset of this and the third is a strange local grid with offsets and rotations.

We have Excel spreadsheets that can convert between the systems, but that requires several extra steps per point.

Is it possible to define each coordinate system in one drawing so that I could select which system I wanted to use, input the points and then select the main coordinate system so it converts the coordinates directly? It would mean less steps and I would have greater confidence in this system.

We have the parameters for all systems.

AutoCAD Map 3D :: Multiple Coordinate Systems / Units?

Jul 17, 2012

I'm enlisted in the United States Air Force and am working with the Navy for topo surveys.  I'm bringing my information into AutoCAD Map 3D 2010 and using the coordinate system UTM84-4N.  I can't figure out why when I bring in my survey .dwg, all of the points are in the middle of the ocean.

I've tried to manually project the coordinate systems onto each file and reference them.  I've changed units to meters.  I've copied with base point 0,0 and pasted as the same.  I've even opened a fresh file, gave that a projection, imported the drawing from "Map Explorer" and queried "ALL" and redrew the file and still nothing.  I've checked the Geo-Markers and they're obviously off.  Is there a way to match them and have it scaled properly?

AutoCAD Civil 3D :: Data And Different Coordinate Systems

Aug 1, 2012

I have a problem with different coordinate systems. I have a drawing in old Finnish coordinate system (KKJ, kaista 4) and I have a point file, which is made in ETRS-GK29 coordinate system. When I try to transfer the points to the drawing, the points will land way off from the drawing or I get this error message "Coordinate transformation from ETRF89.FinlandGK-29 to FINL-KKJ4 failed for point located at {29511662.554000,6948599.365000}. This usually indicates the point falls outside the boundaries of the destination coordinate system". I have checked and the point {29511662.554000,6948599.365000} should be over the drawing.

AutoCAD Inventor :: Length In Routed Systems

Mar 28, 2013

In an attempt to change the unit display on a CC item (from decimal inches to fractional), I came across what, to me, is an issue.  In the CC I set the length on a pipe conduit part to a custom column, with the range at .001 - 240 inches.  I modified my filename column so it was a string that included the length value at the end. (ie Spool x length).

If I place from CC, as custom, a piece of this conduit, the filename does exactly what I expected.  If I specify 24 in the length box in the CC dialog, my filename comes in as "spool x 24"... (or to that effect, I'm paraphrasing).  If I do the same thing within the context of a pipe run in that same assembly... the filename, even though I chose place from CC, as custom, and specified a length, comes in as "spool x .001".  Every time.  And also, any spool pieces generated as a result of populating a route.  I expect the filename there to be different as tube & pipe has it's own rules for naming spools... but the description field still generates as "spool x .001".

So, it would appear that the column parameters set in the CC, do not apply at all in Routed Systems?  I may have to put this in the idea station... wish I had found it last year, now I'll have to wait another year for apotential fix.

Photoshop :: Image Processor

Jun 26, 2008

I usually use Image Processor to apply an action on tons of files on CS2. When I upgraded to CS3, I simply copied the actions over to the new action folder. Problem is, with long actions, CS3 doesn't close each file after it has performed the action unlike CS2, leaving the desktop filled with processed photos. Also a dialog box appear at the end with the message "Sorry, I could not process the following fileslist of files)". still, the processed files are saved in the destination folder. But here's the funny thing, when I run short actions, everything is ok.

AutoCAD Inventor :: Default Sketch Coordinate Systems?

Jan 30, 2012

Is there a way to set Inventor so that the sketch origin defaults to the part origin?  I find it very frustrating that it always defaults to some random corner of the part's body.  It can screw up a part if you decide later on to modify the part such that you eliminate the point to which a coordinate system was defined.  Also, when copying and pasting a sketch to new work planes it can be a pain to figure out which point is the origin of the orignal sketch if the pasted sketch is misaligned.

I know you can edit the coordinate system after a sketch is created, but I'd prefer not to have to rememember to do that with every sketch.

This was brought up about 6 years ago and there was no formal resolution
