Photoshop :: The Advantages Of Grouping Layers Regarding Outlining And Aligning And Such?
Aug 21, 2007
encouterd some remarks about the alignment and outlining of your layers in your group.. I get the impression that you should group the relevant layers, so that its easier to align them or clip them of outline them or whatever.. Which would be great, because Im always having difficulties with shape layers that go outside their bounds.. and adding multiple clipping masks seem to be a lot of work..
I have just upgraded to P&G Designer7 from Xara Xtreme 3.I had problems ungrouping layers.Maybe others have experienced the same difficulty.
Grouping layers is easy, of course. Shortcut CTRL+G, moves all parts to just one layer.
Ungrouping is not so easy.CTRL+U does NOT revert things to your previous multiple layers. If you've saved saved your file, next time you have to tediously re-create all your previous layers from scratch.CTRL+Z does revert to multiple layers, just as long as you haven't already saved the document.
I think I did something unintentionally awhile back so that now every time I group or ungroup objects on a layer, the layer they are in collapses. For the life of me, I can't find anything on what keystroke I may have done (if it was a keystroke) that resulted in this happening.
I was working on a drawing, I had multiple Layers, and was working with grouping to keep it organized. Well my computer was freezing up and I had to restart Gimp, I thought I'd only be loosing a few minutes of work cause I had saved VERY recently. I re opened Gimp and suddenly...I can only see the group I was working with. The latest work is there but all my other layers are gone... It was saved as an xcf file
I have just found out about layer masks wow they are powerful before this I was cutting people from one picture and pasting them into another
What I am trying to do is have me in the same picture twice as 2 different people I know you do this using a layer mask and then using the brushes as I said above
But when I open both images and drag one onto the other how do I line them up exactly the same so when I do use the brush tool and brush away both images match up exactly the same underneath
I am locking the camera down with a tripod and its kept in the same position for both shots but what i have noticed is if you do not line both images up exactly the same you have like a ghost effect if you know what i mean
I am having trouble aligning two layers that have layer masks on them. At the moment, the Align Left Edge tool is aligning the layers based off the entire contents of the layer, and not the mask, resulting in the layers not appearing aligned at all. Is there something I can do to tell the Align tool to take the masks into account?
I am creating a rotating animated gif in PS. Now I have about 37 layers, where I increment the angle of each layer with 10 degress relative to the previous one. But even when aligning all my layers with the aligning tools the layers still not align...How can I align them perfectly?
If you have raster (or vector) item on seperate layers, I know I can link all the layers together, but when I select the MOVE tool and press the button that centers to the middle of the canvas, it moves every item to the center of the canvas (as it should) But these items, when viewed "together" make up an element that I'd like to be considered "grouped" so the "collectively" then are centered to the canvas as one item. Is this possible?
I'm a Gimp newbie, using 2.8.4. I have a png image that's 530 pixels wide. I'm trying to merge it with a white background layer that is 960 pixels wide. I need to align the image to the right side of the background layer. This is what I did:
- opened my image - created background layer (960 px wide) - made background layer the bottom layer - clicked on Alignment tool - clicked the hand cursor on the image (530 px wide) - made the background layer the active layer - set "Relative to:" Active layer - clicked on the right alignment arrow
The image did move to where I wanted it, but most of the image from the right edge disappeared, so all I've got is a small portion of the left side of the image in the middle of my background layer. Then I did the following:
- merged visible layers with Expand as necessary
That action merged the layers, but all I have is a small part of my image near the center of the background.

I recently began trying to assembly my interface into a table using Slices in Imageready. I have been using notepad to edit my html and organize my pages.
But I recently bought a copy of Dreamweaver and began teaching myself that as well. My question is: is it worth it to continue using Imageready to create tables, rollovers, etc if I plan on ultimately using Dreamweaver to handle my site, or should I scrap Imageready and focus entirely on Dreamweaver.
I know its best to use a Notepad to edit html starting out, but my site will probably end up being big and I'm going to need some sort of software to manage it. I'm also ignorant as to any inherent advantages Imageready may have that would possibly make it more valuable that Dreamweaver when it comes to rollovers, tables, etc?
I am considering getting a new system to use for my photo processing applications. I see that Adobe has releases LR v2.0 which supports 64 bit OS and has announced that CS4, when ever it is released will also support 64 bits, well at least for Windows. This being the case, switching to Vista 64 seems to be the way to go. BUT what about the processor? The choices seem to be a quad core version from either Intel or AMD or moving higher, a Intel Xeon processor. This gives me two more choices, use two 5100 series processors for a total of four cores or go up to two 5400 series processors for a total of eight cores. The 5100 series approach seems to use less power that the 5400's and can be clocked faster. Also, last year I had the opportunity to quickly run a bench mark with CS3 on a Dell dual Xeon workstation running Windows XP 32 bit OS. It appeared that the the system only managed to make use of only 4 of the 8 processors.
I have done a fair amount of searching and have not found any good answers to the question of which processor configuration will give the best performance. To keep this discussion reasonable I would like to limit it to one quad core processor vs. two dual core Xeons vs. two quad core Xeons.
How can I group objects is CS2? (For instance, I have text and a picture of the earth. I want the text background to be the earth.) I know it's basic, but I cannot figure out how to do it in CS2.
ok so im trying to make a background... its pretty basic seeing is how i am new to PS.. Im using cs3 extended and im trying to give my words a black outline, to try to diminish the pixil look... i did it to the few basic pictures in it but cant seem to do it with the words.. can anyone help me out?
I create website promotion cards for my clients in Photoshop--which I send out to an online printer in pdf format. I have been getting files kicked back for "missing fonts"--which I guess means that they do not have the font on their end--even though I have them on my computer when I create the file.
I was told this problem could be avoided if I "outline" the fonts as the final step before submission,
I'm working on making up some graphics for making T-shirts. I have a photo that I am wanting to trace to make an outlined image to color and detail, like a coloring book. You have the outlined image and then you add the colors as needed, then I'll add text as needed, etc.
What is the best way or technique to outline a image as I tried to describe?
How do I outline a letter or a number? For example, I have a black, arial font, 200 pt number 5. I would like to put a thin outline of another color, say red, around it. I have tried making a larger number 5 on a different layer and placing it under the smaller number but that gives me more of a drop shadow effect which is not what I am looking for.
I have a document with some quite large areas of colour. This looks nice, but as it needs to be faxed, I'd like to just replace the colour with an outline of the shapes. I know this is probably a really simple question, but how can I just get a line to represent the edge of the shape?
And I got it outlined about 98% of it. But im unsure on how far i should outline the rims and the rear air damn. D-load the PSD file and take a look. Hide the car layer to view the outline. This is my first cell shaded car, so i dont know if i should use highlights/darkened area to bring out the shape in the tire rimes and the rear air damn.
I am working with CS6. Recently I have been recording a few actions that I like to run on a lot of my photos. Before I am done recording these actions I like to group them. Here is where the problem comes into play however...First time I play the action it shows up perfectly in the layer panel. The 2nd,3rd attempt an so on, the action that is grouped (the same action or another grouped action) will show up all jumbled in the layers panel. Sometimes the adjustment layers show up outside of the group while others the group appears to have "eaten" the first group of actions I ran. why can't I stack the actions I have written?
I am cleaning up the Hard Drive on my Mac G4. My scanned images are taking a great portion of the 80 Gig drive. I finished clearing my external drive by removing nearly 60 gigs of images by storing them on DVD. I will do the same for the Mac drive.
My trouble is that all my images are stored in TIFF format which takes up enormous space no matter the storage. Since I output images in various sizes, mainly prints, to 30 x 40 inches, I need a master image archived in the best format for such. However, I do not want to fill my drives, or DVD, with large files. Code:
i just made an outline of a drawing with the pen tool. I finished and i started coloring the image and noticed that the Anti-Aliasing was on during the time i did the outline so now i have a border around where i filled in color that's transparent.
Is there any way (shy from doing the outline all over again with the "anti-aliasing" box un-checked) that i can just turn all those lines to non-anti-aliasing lines?
I'm making a book with large full bleed illustrations on each page. For ease of use I would like to use regular photoshop fonts. If I flatten and save my pages as Tiff files will it be the same as outlining fonts in Illustrator? In other words I won't have to include fonts. I am then going to drop the pages in InDesign in correctly paginated spreads to staple in the middle.
How to group colors with out clicking on one and dragging it to the position of other colors? 148 different hues gets to be a long and tedious endevour. I'm using XP, 2.3 G processor, with Corel Draw graphics suite X6.
I know how to use the "Bucket" to remove the blue background so it turns to white. The problem is that I can't figure out how to change the remaining blue that outlines the image to a light grey. Is it considered an outline or border?
I was wondering if it would be possible to do the following:
Parameters who can vary for lets say a rectangular profile with:
80x50x2
80x50x3
100x50x2
That these data sets/parameters are grouped/linked to eachother in the Parametric Table.
So when I'm doing my analyses with the profile of 100 and I change the wall thicknes from 2 to 3mm the 100 changes to the 80 variant automaticly, or asks me which version I want.
It would be handy to avoid mistakes with non excisting combinations of profiles.
Is there a custom app for Inventor that allows you to manage parameters easier? (Grouping wise to keep a better overvieuw.)
