Paint Shop Pro :: X4 - Block Size Control To Local Tone Mapping Adjustment?
Oct 22, 2011
From X3 to X4, Corel added a "Block Size" control to the Local Tone Mapping adjustment. Is it the number of pixels over which the contrast adjustment is being applied? It seems that the smaller block sizes reduce the effect's harshness (when it could be harsh, e.g., with faces).
Checked the manual and they forgot to mention it.

I'm using X4 and tried Local Tone Mapping for the first time. Any time I try to use it the program freezes and I have to use Task Manager to close it and re-start. It does it on any image I've tried. does it only work on specific file types? Haven't had any other problems with the program.

Having just upgraded to PSP X4 SP1 (14.1.0.5), I spent some time yesterday exploring the tone map layer feature on a few landscape images. The images were in different formats, like TIF, psp image and jpeg. Some were in color, other in b&w. A couple of the images were high-quality scans, the others were from digital cameras (Nikon D200 and D700).
Not wanting to overdo it, I applied the tone maps moderately. In addition, I used a few other layers like HSL, curves etc., all of them used in very moderate levels (e.g., slight desaturation and very modest S-curves). The results were very much to my satisfaction. Looking at them in large format on my monitor, I began thinking of using a few of these, and similar, images for an upcoming exhibition.
Then, I noticed the banding. I became aware of it when I reduced the displayed size of the images. I tried image after image, and found some banding of all of them. Having become aware of it I was also able to spot it on pictures in larger formats.
The banding is rather vague but becomes more evident when the image is reduced in display size, or when an image on the wall is viewed from across the room. It follows the form of the image, presenting itself as a vaguely darker, rather broad band about halfway between the image borders and the image center, in the same aspect ratio as the image itself. I am not sure what constitutes the band but somehow, at least a certain amount of pixels appear to have darkened, following a certain mathematical pattern, forming a somewhat darker rectangle within the image rectangle.
By disabling the other layers I found that the tonemap layer was responsible for the banding. Exaggerating the tonemap, exaggerating the image contrast and/or sharpening the image will make the banding more prominent for illustration purposes.
I would like to work more with the tonemap feature but need to know if there is a way around this problem, or if it will will be addressed in SP2.

The Tone Mapping tool in X4 has changed from previous versions. In X4 there are two sliders (Strength & Block Size)
The Help File is no different than what was found in X3 and doesn't mention Block Size. What this slider does?

My (previously wonderful) local adjustment brush has apparently quit working. Whenever I attempt to make local adjustments - using either the standard presets or custom settings - all the adjustments made are applied to the entire image, not just locally. Density and flow are set to my typical values and Show Selected Mask Overlay shows the extent of the applied effect, but whatever adjustment I make is applied generally, over the entire photo, rather than to the selected adjustment area.Â

For quite a while I have been using the Photoshop HDR for initial processing of my HDR shots. My workflow is to "open in HDR Pro in Photoshop" from Lightroom. With LR 3.x and CS5 there was no problem - make the initial tonemapping settings in CS5, hit "OK", and save the resultant TIF back to lightroom for further processing.
Â
With LR 4.1 I do the same thing, the files import into CS6 and the tonemapping window comes up, but after I hit OK in the tonemapping window, the resultant tonemapped TIF file is oversaturated(This still in CS6). It needs about 30 points of saturation reduction in LR to get it back to what it showed in the tonemapping window.
Â
I have colour gamut set for Pro Photo RGB in both LR and PS. I can show some screen captures later.

I'm using 3-5 adjustment layers on some of my work. Even though I have larger files, without Adjustment layers, once I add an Adjustment Layer to ANY piece of work things slowdown big time. For example a 'normal' curves application is almost instant. But if I add a curves Adjustment Layer then what took 1-2 second takes 10-15 seconds using an Adjustment Layer.
So is there something that Adjustment Layers are doing that is a computer hog? Or am I overlooking something? Or are they just configured in such away that they are naturally slower? [URL]....

PSP is and has always been THE best graphics app with a truly intuitive interface and useful set of features & tools.
I have been using it for many, many years... sniffed around other products, but always returned, fully satisfied with what I can achieve. I've also written a suite of scripts to further enhance my use of it alongside my photography hobby.
HOWEVER... since Corel took it over and the start of the X series, there has been a serious and very annoying omission concerning the Crop tool. Previous versions up to v9 allowed the user to grab hold of the edges of the crop box ANYWHERE along ANY side, and drag/extend/reduce the size of the box. This allowed us photographers to zoom in to pixel level and grab any part of the visible box to adjust the crop dimensions very accurately. This is a very important feature for photographers.
The new X interface has changed the crop box to 'vector node handles' only for adjustment, which are not always visible when zoomed in. This means that instead of being able to align the box accurately to an image feature or row of pixels, you have to zoom out until you can find the nearest handle to use, or scroll up/down left/right, which either takes you away from the area you want to work on, or zoom too far out to see the detail you want for alignment.
option/preference to ditch the vector handles and grab the sides as before. I know you may think it a backward step, but you've taken away the very function that photographers need for cropping a composition, which is available in other products.

I bought PSP about a year or so ago, but grew frustrated with it and reverted back to Gimp. Now, however, I think I am ready to jump back.. and I encountered originally back then.
Basically, in some of the adjustment layers (Local Tone Mapping, Fill Light & Clarity) the mask doesn't work. When I click on the mask control the mask color in the dialog switches from white to black, but the screen doesn't revert back to underlying layer. This is very repeatable. It only happens in some AL, others like Layers and Curves work reliably.
I am on W7 x 64, PSP X4 v 14.2.01

Comparing X3 and X4 ...
Is there no way to use the eraser (or delete selections) on adjustment layers? I do/did this routinely in X3. I have missed some sort of configuration setting in X4!?

In PSPx2 I used to select an area in an adjustment layer and then use the Flood Fill tool to create a mask. Did it quite often.
In PSPx4 the Flood Fill tool doesn't seem to work on adjustment layers. I can get the desired effect using the Airbrush, but it's a tedious and imprecise technique. Is this a known bug (I searched the forum but couldn't find it) or an intentional change?

Every time I use adjustments like brightness/contrast, PSP seems to remember those settings, because the next time I use them, they start with the same values as I used before. But I do not want that. This way I always have to move all sliders to their zero position before adjusting. Every image needs different values and I always like to start from scratch (zero values).
So, how can I tell PSP not to remember those settings every time?

Another problem, this one since installing Service Pack 1.
The histogram is missing from the histogram adjustment window. Everything is there and works but no histogram. How can you adjust it without histogram? What is up with this? It works in x2.

In PSP versions prior to X4, when you had the current image maximized within the interface you'd get a standard MDI Document Control Icon appearing at the left end of the Menu Bar. This is a feature common to the most Windows programs built in the default Multiple Document Interface style. The new custom style of X4 removes this.
It's a not a huge deal, but I'm pretty used to doubleclicking that little doodad to close my images, so I figured I'd try to get it back.
Here it is in X2 (on the left) and the little "@" symbol is the version I've recreated to work around its absence in X4 (on the right):
To do this, open any image, start recording a macro, close the image, Save the macro and call it "Close Current Image" or something like that.
Restart X4 because customization changes don't stick if you've had an image open this session. (long standing bug)
Right click the empty space in the middle of the Edit perspective. Choose Customize. Hit the Scripts tab. Find your macro in the dropdown, pick an icon and hit the Bind button. Your script now appears in the Bound Scripts part of the dialog.
Switch to the Commands tab. Select Bound Scripts. Drag your script to the left end of the Menu bar. Even though you've bound an image to it, the image doesn't show (another bug, I guess). Right click your new rather wordy looking "Close Current Image" menu entry and select "Button Appearance". At the bottom of the Button Appearance dialog you can change the text to something nice and short like "@" or "X" maybe. Hit OK, and you've got a convenient close image button that lives visually in about the same spot as similar icons in most MDI-based software.
Restart X4 after customizing and before starting any work otherwise the changes won't stick.

I use PaintShop Pro v. 11.20 at work. I was using it as normal one day, and it crashed. This is nothing new, the crash is because I tend to have a lot of programs open at the same time and I had not rebooted my computer soon enough to clear the RAM. The problem occurred when I reopened the paint shop after rebooting, and all commands involving the control key (copy/paste, etc.) as well as the delete key do nothing. Very occasionally, it will allow one of these commands to work, but this is now very rare. If I have an object selected, the highlighting will blink briefly as it does when you try to copy it, but otherwise does nothing. I can still use these commands from the drop-down menus. I think this is probably just some random bug that happened when it crashed for whatever reason. If I can avoid reinstalling that would be preferable, as I would have to have the disks mailed to me by the head office. I looked to see if there was some setting that would put things back to normal but could find nothing. I reset defaults, no change.

I found out that there is a way to show clipping areas in Photoshop when adjusting levels via an adjustment layer. While moving the slider, you hold down the ALT key.
I tried this in PSP X3 and it does not work. Any feature for seeing the clipping preview is available in Paint Shop Pro? It's a nice feature.

How do you control texture mapping. Review the attached PDF for illustration on this problem.

My goal is to predictable create geometry in Revit that when a material is mapped to it the desired result will be achieved. My industry has a lot of objects created out of veneered wood, and solid wood forms. Revit is not giving me the texture mapping I am looking for.

I was editing my images on RAW when all of a sudden I guess I pressed an incorrect key (yeah you know those split seconds where something happened and you dont know what you did) and now everytime I want to use the Graduated Filter tool or the Adjustment Brush tool and I press on top of the image it gives me the following message: ERROR:Unable to Create Local Adjustment. All the local adjustment controls are set to haveno effect on this image It doesnt work on ANY raw images now, I tried pressing "Reset Camera Raw Defaults" and it still doesnt work. Is there a setting that I moved without noticing? At the time this happened I had 6 pictures on camera Raw I had synchronized them and I was doing small adjustments to one of the images, I had finished using the Graduated Filter tool on an image when then all of a sudden it stopped working.

When working on an image in ACR, if you select one of the local adjustment tabs, such as Graduated Filter, and move any of the sliders on the right-hand side, any values you change will be retained if pressing 'Cancel', then opening the image again in ACR and selecting the same tab. I find this surprising, as I would have thought that by pressing 'Cancel', any adjusted settings, since opening the image on this occasion in ACR, would not be retained.
Â
Furthermore, if you open another image in ACR and select the same local adjustment tab, the same settings that you adjusted in the other image have identical slider settings in that image as well.
Â
I can see that this behaviour could be viewed as useful, i.e. when wanting to use the same local adjustment on multiple images, as any adjustment of the local adjustment's slider settings, on their own, will have no effect unless you actually perform the selected local adjustment to the image. But, as I say, I would have expected Photoshop to simply not retain any settings you have adjusted, since opening the image on this occasion in ACR, if you don't press 'Open Image' or 'Done', and simply press 'Cancel'.

I just downloaded a trial version of Lightroom 5. I want to change the white balance (temp and tint) using local adjustment brush but when I take a new brush, all I can change is
Â
1. Exposure
2. Brightness
3. Contrast
4. Saturation
5. Clarity
6. Sharpness
7. Color
Â
The Temp and Tint buttons that should appear on the top of this tool are not present. As shown below....
Â
Similarly, as per some youtube videos, in the Basic tools, I should get
Â
1. Highlights
2. Shadows
3. Whites
4. Blacks
Â
Instead I get
Â
1. Recovery
2. Fill light
3. Blacks
Â
As shown below.
Why is there such differences in the option? Is this because it is a trial version?
