Lightroom :: Location To Copy Backup LR4 Catalog

Mar 9, 2013

I  have a brand new ASUS notebook Win 8 64 bit.

LR4.3 installed to the C: drive (default installation). I am now copying from my external drive all photos to the larger D: data drive.

Of course, I have the very latest catalog backed up to multiple places. The old laptop (Windows 7) was just a single C: drive instead of the two drives I now have.

2 Q: 1) To what location do I copy that backup LR4 catalog?

       2)  As I remember from some years ago, I also need to double-click on that LR4 catalog once it's in the proper place. Is that right?

Photoshop Elements :: Catalog Changed The File Location Of All Pictures To Location On Backup Drive

Jul 6, 2013

Photoshop Elements 6 (20070910.r.377499)

I do not know why the catalog has changed the file location of "ALL" pictures to the location on my backup drive.

Example: K:My DocumentsMy PicturesPetsPICT1460-1.JPG

The actual location of the original photo is:  D:My DocumentsMy PicturesPetsPICT1460-1.JPG

The location of "My Pictures" is on my primary Hard Drive D:My DocumentsMy Pictures

Why is Photoshop changing all of my 37,000+ photo thumbnails to point to my Backup Drive K:?

I need to correct the catalog file. How do I make the correction and stop it from happening in the future?

Lightroom :: Photo File Backup Location?

Mar 12, 2013

I understand that Lightroom catalog backup saves only the metadata refering to changes etc. that have been made to photos.  My question refers to the backup of the photo files themselves.  If I do a Windows Defrag for instance, the photos will probably be moves in that process to a different location on my hard drive.  Can Lightroom still find thesse photo files once they are moved?  Or, if I restore photo files from an external drive to my internal hard drive which will probably locate them on different locations than they were originally, how does Lightroom associate the Catalog metadata with these newly relocated files?

Lightroom :: Files Couldn't Be Copied To Backup Location

Oct 16, 2013

After importing into LR3, I get an error message that says: Some import operations were not performed. The following files could not be copied to the backup location.

Then there is a list of images (usually all of the photos imported).  This didn't always happen and I can't pinpoint exactly when it started.  My LR catalog and backups are stored on an EHD.

I am currently saving all of my metadata to files (just to be sure) and backing up my catalog so I can upgrade to LR5 (already purchased) but want to be sure my catalog is good before I do that.I've tried everything I know - checking my backup location and drive in LR window match up.

Lightroom :: Import And Backup To Another Location Without Folder Being Named

Oct 6, 2012

I am moving files from my desktop.

I am adding them to my LR catalogue, and while moving them to one external drive, also copying the files to a backup drive.

The files are named and put in the correct folder on the main drive, but the photos backed up to the second drive are put in a folder called "Imported on October 6, 2012".

Why? How do I turn this off?

Lightroom :: 4 Catalog Backup To NAS Fails?

Jun 10, 2013

The LR 4.4 catalog backup fails when exiting the application. I have set my catalog  backup location on a NAS hard-drive (connected via Gigabit ethernet), which has sufficient empty space and correct network permissions. An empty backup folder is created, however no catalog file is copied into it. After the backup starts and checks integrity and starts the backup, a second dialog box pops up that says do you want to back up. The first dialog box is open with the progress bar about halfway complete, but can't be made active. If I start another backup, it runs part way and says can't complete as the same as the others report.

This is strange, since in earlier versions of LR 4 (and even in LR3) I had none of these problems.

I am running Mac OSX 10.8.4 with 2GB of RAM.

Lightroom :: 4.2 Destroyed Catalog And Its Backup

Jan 1, 2013

I performed a backup of my Lightoom 4.2 catalog upon exiting an editing session.  No errors were reported.  The next time I opened Lightroom it said the catalog was invalid.  Upon checking I found both the catalog and it's backup totally empty -- 0 bytes.  It must have erased the catalog during the integrity checking/optimization process prior to doing the backup.  Is there any way to recover this catalog?  If not, I will have lost a lot of work since the previous backup a week earlier.  Obviously the catalog was fine just prior to the backup process as I had just been successfully using it.

Lightroom :: Missing Catalog / Backup In LR3

Oct 4, 2013

When opening LR3 a window appeared asking if I wanted to open a catalog titled Photoshop Elements (or something like that). I said no and then got another window asking to select a catalog. After considerable searching I managed to find what must have been an initial attempt to start LR (several years ago), and it contained about 400 pictures rather than the 100,000 plus it should have displayed. Also, can not find any backups although I backup about once per week.  I've looked in all the usual places and the catalog I've been using for the last two years is missing, at least to me.

I have folders in two separate external hard drives but when I attempt backup I get a message:  "Lightroom was unable to backup the catalog named Lightroom 4 Catalog. Lightroom :: Restoring Catalog And Images From Backup

Jan 15, 2012

I recently managed to crash my PC by upgrading from Windows Vista to Windows 7.  I continually get a BSOD with exceptionally vague insight into what is causing the problem.  Anyhow, I've decided that the best thing to do at this point is to simply wipe my hard drive and do a clean install of Windows 7 (which has a much higher probability of working).

I have my entire Lightroom Catalog and all of my photography backed up to an external drive, so my data is safe.  My plan is basically to wipe my PC's main hard disk, do a fresh install of Windows 7, install Lightroom 3.6, then copy all of my Lightroom files (catalog and RAW files) from my external backup drive to my PC's main hard disk.

My question is: Should my Lightroom catalog open without a problem after restoring it in this manner?  Should expect any major problems during this process?.

Lightroom :: Unsuccessful Catalog Backup On External Hard Drive?

Feb 13, 2014

So I just tried to do a backup on my new external hard drive and it said it was unable to backup the catalog. Specifically, "Please check your folder permissions, and make sure you have available space on your backup drive and main catalog's drive." I'm not sure what's going on because as far as I know permissions should be fine and there is certainly enough space on the external hard drive. Idk if this makes a differnence but I currently have my catalog backed up on the same internal hard drive that lightroom is used on, I'm just now wanting to back it up on the external. Lighroom 4, Mac computer.

Lightroom :: External Lacie Drive Crashed / Can't Find Recent Backup For LR3 Catalog

May 3, 2013

I have LR3 on a Mac running OS 10.6.8.  My catalog, cache and images were stored on an external Lacie 1TB drive (partitioned so it can be used by a pc and mac).  My catalog backup files were saved on another external drive MXTR as well as copies of all my images.  The Lacie had started self ejecting while running LR3 and I thought it was maybe a problem with the cable, as it would work fine after rebooting.  Yesterday it crashed LR3 and never remounted.  I used Disk Utility to try and repair the disk and it instructed me to erase the disk and start over.  I was not worried, since my catalog was backed up to another drive. .  Another 2 hours to copy my images from the MXTR to the Lacie (again the drive never self ejected during this time either).  So now I go to find my most recent backup catalog.  The most recent one I could find was dated 2/09/2012.  I am baffled.  What happened all those times I was backing up?  I upgraded to LR3 in 2011, and I don't remember ever telling it to backup to another folder or drive.

Lightroom :: Moving Complete Catalog To Another Location On Mac?

Oct 1, 2013

For a while I've been using my Lightroom on my Mac on a folder inside my Google Drive folder. The reason for this is that I have an online backup as well my 2 external hard drive backups (you can NEVER have too many backups ).

However, Google Drive has proved to be a bigger let down than any Michael Bay movie out there, and I've now signed up to Copy. If you fancy creating a Copy account, you'll get 5Gb free on top of the 15Gb they so generously give you if you click on this link!

Anyway, my plan is to move my Catalog to another folder in my root drive, aptly titled “Copy”. So, I created a new folder within Lightroom, and went to move it, (whilst using the Lightroom interface) — so far I'm pretty sure this is the correct way, but I've attached a screenshot of the message that came up. This should be ok shouldn't it? I've attached screenshots of where I want to move it to, and the prompt that came up.

Lightroom :: Source Location When Moving Catalog To New Hdd

My main hdd was about to crash. i bought a new ssd drive. it isnt big enough to fit original os, programs and images. So I moved images from main hdd to an external hdd. I moved catalog to a new primary hdd with a fresh install. When I load the catalog, the images are missing. When I select locate and find target files, I think it's importing them back to the main hdd. Does it move the file or just change where it's pointing to the file. If it moves the file then I will run out of space again and defeat the purpose!!

Lightroom :: Recognize The New Location Of Copied Master Catalog?

Mar 17, 2014

I just cloned my hard disk (named PI)  to a new one  named TAU. Now they both contain my enormous catalog of 800 GB of Lightroom catalog and files.

I removed my initial hard disk PI and put it in a safe location (just saying this so you know I have a backup)

I start Lightroom 5 and open the ircat file on TAU but all the pictures have an ! meaning they are missing (but the pictures are all there).  How do I get Lightroom to recognize the new location?

In my catalog settings the path correctly points to the new hard drive and the folder where the photos and catalog are located, however within the application there is no way to navigate among the files and folders of my collection as there was before.

Lightroom :: Defining The Location Of The Second Copy?

Jul 28, 2013

`I have recently upgraded from Lightroom 3 to 5. One of the triggers for doing this was getting a Canon G15; and the fact that my previous workflow didn't work for the CR2 files that it produced. (Previous work flow [Mac Mini ... a bit creaky now, running OS 10.7.5]: Use Nikon's importing tools to import photos to folders & create back up at same time [external drive] Use Preview to select & just do basic editing if needed [e.g. cropping]), import (add, rather than move/copy) to Lightroom - though often I'd wait for a bit & do quite a few groups at at time, especially if Preview was ample for what I wanted to do at the time. While the Nikon import tool was fairly agnostic about JPEGs, it naturally didn't recognise the CR2 files

The Canon software wouldn't create the backup files that I liked. I've also experimented with Image capture, but again, no luck with creating the backup

So, on the upgrade to lightroom 5, I have started to look at using Lightroom (though it takes forever to load compared to Nikon / Canon offerings). I have now discovered, however, that the backup that Lightroom does creates folders named "Imported on 28 July 2013" - rather than the 2013-07-28 folder structure that I use elsewhere. I can't find a setting to let me create the backup folders based on the same structure as the main import.

(The only option I can think of at present is to use Carbon Copy Cloner & run it daily on the regular destination, unless others have other ideas ...)

[Time Machine runs, but I also want to have the photos in a way I can easily access them from Windows etc., as well as Mac. And I'm a bit of a back up freak. I like plenty of the things. Just In Case]
