My external hard drive recently crashed and now I am trying to restore my Lightroom catalogs. When I try to open the most recent back-up, I keep getting a message stating the catalog is too new for the current version of Lightroom. I have not done anything to my most recent version of LR.

I have tried many options if unchecking the optomize and and test integrity. And different backup loctions on different drives. I have searched for this issuse and I do not seem to be finding an answer that will solve my problem. I am using a iMac.

I have folders in two separate external hard drives but when I attempt backup I get a message: "Lightroom was unable to backup the catalog named Lightroom 4 Catalog. Please check folder permissions...." Could it be that the catalog has become too large as I have well over 200,000 images in it? I don't understand what "folder permissions" I need to check.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI just got Elements 11 (Windows 8) this week end, and I have a few questions about the Catalogue in the Organizer.
I spent a few hours tagging people, organizing categories, and so on. After that, I did a backup of the catalogue, which from my understanding includes every pictures.
However, does a backup of the "Pictures" folder manually every month. My question is, are the people and tags I added in the Organizer embedded in the pictures, or do I really need to backup and restore the catalog to keep everything I have tagged? If I reinstall Elements 11 and add the pictures manually as I would the first time, will all the info still be there?
I purchased a new computer today and also purchased PSE 12 (I had PSE 10 running on a different machine/laptop). On the laptop/PSE 10, I had about 20,000 digital on an external drive (all were tagged according to color, theme, etc via the PSE organizer). All of the elements were stored on the external drive under a folder called "digital kits". I used the PSE 10 backup utility to backup my catalog to ease the move to my new machine. After I performed the backup, I renamed the "digital kits" folder to "digital kits-glw" because I intended to just move the external hard drive to the new computer and restore the catalog to the same path, “E:digital kits”, as I have other software that is dependent upon that path.
The restore went pretty quickly, and I can see the correct folder structure within PSE 12 Organizer, but all I have is a bunch of blank thumbnails. Upon closer inspection, the restore did NOT recreate the E:digital kits folder on the hard drive as I expected. Worse, the E:digital kits-glw folder is virtually empty (just a handful of thumb.db files). So, it appears the backup process deleted/hijacked all of my files. (Note: I did NOT verify the contents of the digital kits folder before I renamed it.) Tech support is closed until Monday, and I’m just sick over the possibility of losing all that data, so I’m turning to you all.(I have a backup of the data, but without the catalog piece I would have to re-catalog all 20,000 elements!)
Old computer was XP with PE10 installed. Moving to new Win7 computer, so did catalog backup of PE10 onto a network drive. On new computer, have serveral Drives: C, E, G (XP drive from old computer for moving stuff over to new system). Installed PE11 on new computer to drive E. Then opened PE11 and did a catalog restore from the network drive. Set restore location to Drive E. Restore said successful, conversion worked OK. Organizer in PE11 shows the pictures and references drive G (my old XP drive that is in my new system). How do I get PE11 to change path to Drive E catalog??

View 3 Replies View RelatedI am unable to back up my catalog to DVD.
Going through the process PSE11 tells me I will need 16 DVDs. After the first one or two (sometimes three) I receive an error message, asking to update the firmware of my DVD burner. I have the latest firmware installed, and do not have any issues burning multiple DVDs with other software (Nero; Version 12). I have tried Fuji as well as TDK media and tried burning @ 8x (My drive and the media are both rated @ 16x). I have also tried turning off Media analysis. As a last resort, I uninstalled and re-installed PSE11. All with no success.
I am able to back up this catalogue to an external hard drive as well as an internal hard drive, but want to back up to a more stable media (DVD).
Win 7 (64-bit) with all updates and all drivers are the latest versions.
I have not been able to restore my catalog(s) using the Backups. My computer crashed and will not start up. So I am thinking, whew – good thing my original image files and backups are stored on a separate (and unaffected) hard drive (plus 2 additional backups of all of this). Until I tried to restore my catalog from the backups.
I am contemplating what to do with the crashed computer, I decide to check the Lightroom backups just to ensure that work fine.
.If I try to open the backup catalogs on my laptop (a separate computer from the one that crashed) without moving them from their current location/ folders (in backup folders on the hard drives) I get an error message that says the catalog file is not writable (due to incorrect permissions or because another Lightroom application is using the catalog).
If I move the catalog backup to the laptop (to a folder location that has unrelated functioning catalogs), I get a message that says the folder cannot be found. I have tried to restore 3 separate LR3 catalogs. I have not attempted to restore the LR4 catalogs yet.
I need to re-insatll my PC and wanted to know how I can backup/restore my LR4 presets/preferences. The most important for me to keep are the Smart Collections, Keyword list and Export settings (to Flickr). I also use a number of plug-iins, but I imagine I simply need to re-load these (however, if I can keep the settings associated with these plug-ins that would save a lot of time).
View 2 Replies View RelatedI bought a new laptop and transferred data from my old one to my new one via Time Machine. All my photos were successfully transferred, but all my presets, settings, changes to the photos that I made are gone. How do I recover that?
I also upgraded from LR3 to LR4 at the time that I upgrade my laptop so that updated my existing catalog, if that's relevant.
I just managed to crash LR (4.1) big time, resulting in a BSOD and immediate Windows shutdown. What triggered this: both LR and my PC are usually very reliable, and in fact my PC has never before blue screened on me. At the time, LR was building a collection.
I re-booted and checked over my catalogue in LR, focusing on the images I'd been working on prior to the crash (all in the same folder on my HD). I see no obvious corruption with the images I was working on; in fact LR even managed to complete the collection. I allowed it to check the catalogue integrity and it found no issues. However I now have a nagging doubt that perhaps I'm overlooking something... Do you think it might be worth my while to restore from a previous backup, just to be sure no corruption has managed to rear its head in my catalogue, or do you think that, based on the lack of any warning signs, I should be OK?
This raises another related question: how do you know that a catalogue is corrupted at all? Does LR give you any warning/error message?

View 1 Replies View RelatedThe LR 4.4 catalog backup fails when exiting the application. I have set my catalog backup location on a NAS hard-drive (connected via Gigabit ethernet), which has sufficient empty space and correct network permissions. An empty backup folder is created, however no catalog file is copied into it. After the backup starts and checks integrity and starts the backup, a second dialog box pops up that says do you want to back up. The first dialog box is open with the progress bar about halfway complete, but can't be made active. If I start another backup, it runs part way and says can't complete as the same as the others report.
This is strange, since in earlier versions of LR 4 (and even in LR3) I had none of these problems.
I am running Mac OSX 10.8.4 with 2GB of RAM.
The backup of my catalog aborts with an error! LR says that it could not back up the catalog. Folder permissions and sufficient disk space is available.
Until a few days, everything was still working. Even if I create a new catalog I get in the catalog backup, the error message

View 1 Replies View RelatedI performed a backup of my Lightoom 4.2 catalog upon exiting an editing session. No errors were reported. The next time I opened Lightroom it said the catalog was invalid. Upon checking I found both the catalog and it's backup totally empty -- 0 bytes. It must have erased the catalog during the integrity checking/optimization process prior to doing the backup. Is there any way to recover this catalog? If not, I will have lost a lot of work since the previous backup a week earlier. Obviously the catalog was fine just prior to the backup process as I had just been successfully using it.

View 3 Replies View RelatedWhen opening LR3 a window appeared asking if I wanted to open a catalog titled Photoshop Elements (or something like that). I said no and then got another window asking to select a catalog. After considerable searching I managed to find what must have been an initial attempt to start LR (several years ago), and it contained about 400 pictures rather than the 100,000 plus it should have displayed. Also, can not find any backups although I backup about once per week. I've looked in all the usual places and the catalog I've been using for the last two years is missing, at least to me.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a new computer and want to move the databse catalog over. I backed up in PSE 9 to an external hard drive. I connected to HD to the new computer and tried a resotre catalog. I chose "New Location" since I was going from XP to Windows 7 and was unsure if there would be a conflict with file locations. I also chose "Restore Original Floder Strucure". Very quickly I recieve an error message "Could not restor file .xml". I have run Restore Catalog several times and each time a DIFFERENT FILE receives the error message. I then disabled Norton Anti Virus Auto-Protect. I then disabled several programs running in the background. Same problem. I then copied the Backup Catalog to the new computer and tried to Restore it from there. Same Problem. I have now run a Repair Catalog on the original file. PSE states there is no error. I want to purchas PSE 11, but wanted to install/restore the database with the same version 9 first.
View 11 Replies View Related I am working with lightroom 3 on a Mac with OSX 10.7.5 and time-machine for backup.Some weeks ago a partner-user accidentally changed some keywords. As a consequence a lot of pictures are now no longer findable because its keywords are missing.
Several weeks and modifications to the catalog have passed since this accident. If I restore the whole catalog back to the date of accident, all the changing will also be neutralized.
I recently had a computer crash and want to migrate my photos and changes from my old hard drive into my newly installed Lightroom software on the new computer. I recovered the old drive, and accessed it from my new computer. I found the most recent Lightroom catalog and imported it. Then I imported all of my photos into Lightroom. The problem is that the catalog and the photos don't seem to be talking to each other. In the catalog, the photos are there all bunched together, no folders separating by date. In the photo folders that ARE separated by date, the original photos are there as they were first imported (RAW files), but don't have the develop changes that I made to them. How can I get these two things to link up?

I've moved my photos from my desktop to an external drive.
I've pointed LR to the new external location so my .cat and .dat files are up-to-date.
I've made a copy of the LR folder (from C:/My Pictures) that holds my .cat and .dat files and also put it on my external drive
What's the procedure for making sure my new LR installation points to the latest catalog once I've done the clean install?
And can I reset LR to store .cat and .dat files on the external drive going forward?
I have a brand new ASUS notebook Win 8 64 bit.
LR4.3 installed to the C: drive (default installation). I am now copying from my external drive all photos to the larger D: data drive.
Of course, I have the very latest catalog backed up to multiple places. The old laptop (Windows 7) was just a single C: drive instead of the two drives I now have.
2 Q: 1) To what location do I copy that backup LR4 catalog?
2) As I remember from some years ago, I also need to double-click on that LR4 catalog once it's in the proper place. Is that right?
Backup Catalog process will not complete.
- I have to use Task Manage to shut LR4 down
- LR4 will then not restart
- Computer shutdown also stops working.
I have to pull the plug to restart.I am a current LR2 user and am upgrading to LR4. I use Win7 64bit.I looked over 4.1 RC2 release notes and saw nothing on the subject.
Is there a way to do a manual backup of the catalog file within LR4 other than having it prompt you when exiting the application?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI recently managed to crash my PC by upgrading from Windows Vista to Windows 7. I continually get a BSOD with exceptionally vague insight into what is causing the problem. Anyhow, I've decided that the best thing to do at this point is to simply wipe my hard drive and do a clean install of Windows 7 (which has a much higher probability of working).
I have my entire Lightroom Catalog and all of my photography backed up to an external drive, so my data is safe. My plan is basically to wipe my PC's main hard disk, do a fresh install of Windows 7, install Lightroom 3.6, then copy all of my Lightroom files (catalog and RAW files) from my external backup drive to my PC's main hard disk.
My question is: Should my Lightroom catalog open without a problem after restoring it in this manner? Should expect any major problems during this process?.

The error screen tells me the requested catalog is being used by another LR program. HUH? I have opened my Task Manager (windows 7) and nothing is running. View 3 Replies View RelatedSo I just tried to do a backup on my new external hard drive and it said it was unable to backup the catalog. Specifically, "Please check your folder permissions, and make sure you have available space on your backup drive and main catalog's drive." I'm not sure what's going on because as far as I know permissions should be fine and there is certainly enough space on the external hard drive. Idk if this makes a differnence but I currently have my catalog backed up on the same internal hard drive that lightroom is used on, I'm just now wanting to back it up on the external. Lighroom 4, Mac computer.
