I have a brand new ASUS notebook Win 8 64 bit.
LR4.3 installed to the C: drive (default installation). I am now copying from my external drive all photos to the larger D: data drive.
Of course, I have the very latest catalog backed up to multiple places. The old laptop (Windows 7) was just a single C: drive instead of the two drives I now have.
2 Q: 1) To what location do I copy that backup LR4 catalog?
2) As I remember from some years ago, I also need to double-click on that LR4 catalog once it's in the proper place. Is that right?

Lightroom 5.3 stopped Importing photos and videos. Error message appears "Could not copy a file to the requested location."
I uninstalled and reinstalled LR 5.3. Problem still occurs. There must be residual problems not cleared out by the uninstall.

Photoshop Elements 6 (20070910.r.377499)
I do not know why the catalog has changed the file location of "ALL" pictures to the location on my backup drive.
Example: K:My DocumentsMy PicturesPetsPICT1460-1.JPG
The actual location of the original photo is: D:My DocumentsMy PicturesPetsPICT1460-1.JPG
The location of "My Pictures" is on my primary Hard Drive D:My DocumentsMy Pictures
Why is Photoshop changing all of my 37,000+ photo thumbnails to point to my Backup Drive K:?
I need to correct the catalog file. How do I make the correction and stop it from happening in the future?

I had copied a .PNG file into the source folder and wanted to import it into the Lightroom catalog.
However the import dialog does not show that file in the source folder at all.
I also tried the method of selecting the source folder and using the "Synchronize" option. But that did not show the .PNG file either.
My clumsy work-around was to open the file in CS6 and save it as a .JPG file.
So my question: how can I tell Lightroom which file types (extensions) I want to be able to import?

For a while I've been using my Lightroom on my Mac on a folder inside my Google Drive folder. The reason for this is that I have an online backup as well my 2 external hard drive backups (you can NEVER have too many backups ).
However, Google Drive has proved to be a bigger let down than any Michael Bay movie out there, and I've now signed up to Copy. If you fancy creating a Copy account, you'll get 5Gb free on top of the 15Gb they so generously give you if you click on this link!
Anyway, my plan is to move my Catalog to another folder in my root drive, aptly titled “Copy”. So, I created a new folder within Lightroom, and went to move it, (whilst using the Lightroom interface) — so far I'm pretty sure this is the correct way, but I've attached a screenshot of the message that came up. This should be ok shouldn't it? I've attached screenshots of where I want to move it to, and the prompt that came up.

My main hdd was about to crash. i bought a new ssd drive. it isnt big enough to fit original os, programs and images. So I moved images from main hdd to an external hdd. I moved catalog to a new primary hdd with a fresh install. When I load the catalog, the images are missing. When I select locate and find target files, I think it's importing them back to the main hdd. Does it move the file or just change where it's pointing to the file. If it moves the file then I will run out of space again and defeat the purpose!!

I have one Lightroom catalog and i use 2 external drives that I work with. I've assigned fixed drive letters to both E: and F: I've recently upgraded to an SSD - cloned my entire HDD but now Lightroom shows the content on the 2 external drives swithced around. The folders that are physically on drive E: show as if they shoud be on F: but with the missing icon next to them. And vice versa, the ones that are on F: show as if they should be on E: with missing icon.

I just cloned my hard disk (named PI) to a new one named TAU. Now they both contain my enormous catalog of 800 GB of Lightroom catalog and files.
I removed my initial hard disk PI and put it in a safe location (just saying this so you know I have a backup)
I start Lightroom 5 and open the ircat file on TAU but all the pictures have an ! meaning they are missing (but the pictures are all there). How do I get Lightroom to recognize the new location?
In my catalog settings the path correctly points to the new hard drive and the folder where the photos and catalog are located, however within the application there is no way to navigate among the files and folders of my collection as there was before.

`I have recently upgraded from Lightroom 3 to 5. One of the triggers for doing this was getting a Canon G15; and the fact that my previous workflow didn't work for the CR2 files that it produced. (Previous work flow [Mac Mini ... a bit creaky now, running OS 10.7.5]: Use Nikon's importing tools to import photos to folders & create back up at same time [external drive] Use Preview to select & just do basic editing if needed [e.g. cropping]), import (add, rather than move/copy) to Lightroom - though often I'd wait for a bit & do quite a few groups at at time, especially if Preview was ample for what I wanted to do at the time. While the Nikon import tool was fairly agnostic about JPEGs, it naturally didn't recognise the CR2 files
The Canon software wouldn't create the backup files that I liked. I've also experimented with Image capture, but again, no luck with creating the backup
So, on the upgrade to lightroom 5, I have started to look at using Lightroom (though it takes forever to load compared to Nikon / Canon offerings). I have now discovered, however, that the backup that Lightroom does creates folders named "Imported on 28 July 2013" - rather than the 2013-07-28 folder structure that I use elsewhere. I can't find a setting to let me create the backup folders based on the same structure as the main import.
(The only option I can think of at present is to use Carbon Copy Cloner & run it daily on the regular destination, unless others have other ideas ...)
[Time Machine runs, but I also want to have the photos in a way I can easily access them from Windows etc., as well as Mac. And I'm a bit of a back up freak. I like plenty of the things. Just In Case]

I am not sure if I am going about this the right way, but once of the frustrations I deal with is managing my portfolio of images.
What I have recently done is create a seperate catalog for my portfolio image seperate from my "working catalog". My question is, once I have identified an image from my "working catalog" how can I copy it to my portfolio catalog?

From LR4 on my desktop PC, I used to be able to select File->Import From Another Catalog..., navigate to a catalog on a networked laptop, select which photos/dates I want to import, then choose to Copy Photos to a New Location and Import. This would both copy the photos over the network to my desktop, and add the photos to my desktop LR catalog - in one step. Always worked great for me for getting travel laptop photos back into my main desktop & LR catalog.
Both desktop and laptop recently upgraded to LR5. But now when I try this same procedure - the "Import From Another Catalog..." dialog no longer has the option to Copy Photos to a New Location and Import. The only options are Add New Photos To Catalog Without Moving and Don't Import New Photos.
Of course I can work around this by doing it with 2-3 extra steps: I can import over the network like above, but choose Add New Photos to Catalog Without Moving and then later copy the files & find the missing photos. Or export to a separate catalog & copy everything, etc.
So what happend to the Copy Photos to a New Location and Import option in LR5? Was this option removed explicitly? Or is there something else I'm missing (file path permissions, etc) that would cause the option to not be shown?

I use to have all my pictures in a single catalog - "MyPics". It contains around 50.000 photos.
Last week, LR4 has silently created a new copy of my catalog: "MyPics-2". No warning, no message. I did not notice immediately.
The 2 catalog files have roughly the same size, but the preview folders are very different: old: 350MB, 100 files, 115 folders new: 280GB, 47000 files, 34000 folders I assume it moved the preview files from old to new.
Is my assumption of moved preview files correct? Is this related to the upgrade from LR3.6 to LR4?

I store my images on an external hard drive. I recently upgraded from LR 3.6 on a windows XP machine to LR 5 on an iMac. I moved my catalogue fine, I think, as I can see all my images in LR 5 on the iMac. The problem is that I suspect there is some problem between the iMac and the external hard drive. I cannot import my RAW photos from my CF card into LR and onto the external hard drive. LR tells me "could not copy files to the requested location."
Is there some problem because I changed from windows to Mac? Problem bc I upgraded from LR 3.6 to LR 5?

I have installed a new primary disc (C: in Windows 7 Pro) and re-downloaded LR4.2 release candidate. Can I simply copy the existing LR catalog (which I have on old disk, still accessible via USB, or from several backup copies) to the new disc and LR will work as it did previously. The drive letters of the locations of the actual image files (on other internal drives) have now changed so how do I tell LR to now use the new drive letter locations.

My master catalog sees the edits in the original disk. This same catalog sees the new disk without the edits in the original disk.

All of a sudden, Lightroom 3.6 won't create a new catalog for me. It worked for years but stopped working for no reason I can figure. I fill in the new catalog name in the dialog, click Save, then Lighroom restarts but tells me it can't find the new catalog name I just created. When I look in Explorer, I see that the folder has been created, but the catalog files were not.
Also, Lightroom didn't remember the last catalog opened when it starts. To test this, I located and opened a previous catalog, made some changes and quit Lightroom. When I restarted, it did not recall the previous catalog, but opened a much older one. I went to Edit->Preferences and changed the "open" setting to "Prompt me" (for a catalog name on open) but that didn't stick either.

I purchased Lightroom 4.2 about 3 weeks ago and its been operating smoothly. As of a week ago I am no longer able to create a new catalog. When I first installed this program I was able to create new catalogs just fine, then suddenly I could not anymore. I click "file", "new catalog" then I select a new folder in which to create the catalog, but the button that says "create" is greyed out and unclickable.
I'm using a mid 2010 Mac Air (OSX 10.7.5) and Lightroom 4.2. All my catalogs are stored on a 1.5 TB external hard drive, so now I can't even use Lightroom unless I'm connected to this hard drive (since I can't create a new catalog I have to select an existing catalog to start the program, all of which are housed on the external hard drive.)

I recently converted all of my pictures to a new format. I want to make a new catalog, identical to the old one, with the new pictures. I imported everything, but I don't know what to do about collections and smugmug folders. I still have the old catalog, and all of the old pictures. But I need to reupload all of the new pictures to my smugmug site, same as before. So, I need to recreate every collection and add the new pictures like they were before. Is there a faster way to do this? Can I use my old catalog to somehow recreate the collections? I still have the old catalog, and all of the old pictures. All of the filenames of new and old pictures are identical. I also have a few collections that I would prefer not to manually recreate.

The catalogs aren't damaged as they work perfectly in LR4.4. I urgently need to update them to a new mac with LR5.
