Apr 15, 2012Using LR4 (not 4.1) and Win7 Home Premium. Catalog had been upgraded from LR3 and LR4 catalog was working fine until now. I've been using LR since the beginning.Two problems, probably related. 106K photos over two drives, almost 3Tb.
At the catalog level, there are no previews. Normally previews of all 106K photos would be displayed. Message is "Click the "import" button to begin." Filter function does not work Message: "No photos match the filter".At the drive level, there are no previews. Message is "No photos in selected folder" Filter function does not work Message: "No photos match the filter". At the folder level, everything is fine, except two folders give the same message "No photos in selected folder" Filter function does not work in these two folders: Message: "No photos match the filter" 14K photos between the two bad folders. Dozens, hundreds, of other folders and subfolders are fine. Filter function works fine at folder and subfolder level. Collections are fine, including photos in the two folders giving the mesage "No photos in selected folder"
Tried to import the missing folders. Won't import because they're already in the catalog. Won't import even if I uncheck "Don't import suspected duplicates". Exported as a catalog one of the "No photos in selected folder" folders. It appeared to create a viable catalog with previews, search filters, etc. I edited a few photos with no problems. Although it did give a message saying several hundred previews were missing. But they seem to be there anyway.Deleted the folder from the catalog and imported from catalog the working folder catalog that I just created. Exported as a catalog the other "No photos in selected folder" folder. Same result as the first bad folder. I.e. It appeared to create a viable catalog with previews, search filters, etc. Although it did give a message saying several hundred previews were missing. But they seem to be there anyway. Haven't done anything with this second folder catalog. Intriguing, the same message about missing previews. The actual files and *.xmp files are in the bad folders.

Apr 18, 2013Since Windows normally places the pictures on a typical drive as "My Pictures" about four or five levels down from the root, any effort to import picture files into Lightroom requires multiple clicks to drill down to the "My Pictures" then (for example) year, month, date, etc.
Can I define a location as the default starting point to find the pictures? I don't see how to put that into presets. Or can a key shortcut be created to go straight to c:/users/name/mypictures/2013/April15 etc?

The catlog for PSE was located on the same drive as a programs and even I have almost empty data drive I cannot install any more programs because there is not enough space on the drive for the programs.

2. How I can configure from the start or re-configure PSE to have Catalog in another location/drive?
Lightroom :: Merge External Drive Images To Desktop Drive Within Same Master Catalog?
Aug 18, 2013I have about 900 raw files on an external drive. I edited those files using my master catalog using a laptop while still travelling. When I got home, I copied the master catalog from the external drive to the desk top, then opened the master catalog on my desktop. I can see the edited images on the external drive. So far so good.
I want to copy (add) the edited images to my desk top. I tried to export the images as a new catalog and then import it into the desire location on my desktop drive. However, LR5 does not allow that. I get this message: "There is nothing new in the catalog you have selected. All of the catalog's photos are up to date in this catalog." Yes, but the edited images are not on my desktop.....
I also tried to Import from the external drive and then Copy the files to the desktop, but then I lose all of the work done in the develop module and the keywords.
I watched Kost's LR 3 video on merging catalogs, but she dodges the question of how to deal with this issue since the "merge" is within the same catalog.I'm using LR5 with Windows 7.

Jan 15, 2014I will be managing a small portion of a client's overall image workflow by updating their web prescence on a regular basis with new work and retagging/uploading old work. I believe this requires the catalog and the image library to be housed on an external hard drive that can travel between the two of us. We are both working on PC's with LR 5.3.
The workflow would look something like this:
Client downloads new images onto external hard drive and imports into LR "ClientCatalog" is created Flags Picks and Creates a Collection from those Picks.Hard drive is handed off to me where I open "ClientCatalog".Make suggested edits to images add detailed tags and metadata upload to various social media sites and websites return hard drive to client
Is there potential problem with this workflow? My assumption is that if everything is housed on the external hard drive then there are no worries about the catalog containing all the latest updates. Are there any "safety protocols" you would add in to this workflow (besides mirroring everythign on another hard drive)?
Lightroom :: Lost Adjustments When Move Images From Hard Drive To External Drive
Mar 1, 2012I moved images from my harddrive to an external drive.
I opened Lightroom.
Noticed there was a question mark by the photo folder I needed.
I synchronized the folders. Nada.
I rememebered I moved the images (first line ^^)
I re-imported the images from the external drive into Lightroom.
These images (other than one that was marked previously with a blue label) look completely untouched - completely original files - even though I spent hours working on them.
I am glad the images weren't deleted BUT re-doing 600 images will be a MAJOR FAIL if I can't figure out how to import the images with the settings / developments I did beforehand.
Lightroom :: Use Smart Previews Without External Hard Drive?
Sep 1, 2013I get it. I know I need to tell Lightroom that it's "this" specific catalog that I want to be working on while being away from my external hard drive. But, just so I understand the logic: I have to opne Lightroom with the external hard drive connected and then, ejected it so I could smart previews that I've previsoulsy build. There's no way for me just to turn on my computer, away from my external hard drive, and work on smart previews? So, I guess that this my real questions: If I make a copy of the catalog from my external hard drive onto my desktop, and I tell my computer to work with this catalog while away from external hard drive, will this clash everything up?

May 28, 2012I had some trouble with my hard drive and needed to restore about 35000 photos. Sorting through them I imported all the recovered files into a new "Recovered" catalog. That works fine.
When I tried to import this catalog into my previous catalog it imports the photos fine but doesn't render any previews. Not in small batches, nothing. The progress bar just stays put at 1 of .... If I take the photo to the Develop module it will load and render a preview after a few seconds. But this can only be done one at a time and is very laggy.
I've had similar issue with this catalog before: no previews rendered on import. Except now it's a giant batch and it can't be processed manually.I'm on Lightroom 4.0

Jan 10, 2012Recently I reorganized my system so that my image files were on a different drive that I had previously been using a backup drive, so no additional file copying was involved. When I ran Lr it did not find any images, as expected, at the original location and I told it where to find them by pointing it to the new parent image folder. That worked fine but then it seemed as if all of the previews had to be rebuilt on the fly by Lr as I went to each folder. Could it be that the previews in the preview cache are location specific to drive/volume level rather than just folder level ? Or is there a way to aim that ole preview cache at the new image locations ?
Likewise, would this apply to the ACR cache too ? i.e. if I point Lr at the same images in the same folder names on a different drive, will the ACR cache data still be relevant or should I just scrap it and start again ?
I told Lr to rebuild previews for many of my images and it did so overnight, but now the preview cache is about 30GB instead of about 12GB. It's possible that I picked up previews of images that were previously not in the cache, but would the new cache still contain previews of the now non-existant images at the old locations ?
I have previously reverted to system backups in which the whole drive volume had previously been been copied intact. Lr always worked fine in those situations. Is my present problem because I shifted the images folder relative to the drive volume where Lr is running ?
I'm using Lr 3.6 on a 2011 MacBook Pro with Mac OSX 10.6.8.

I would then like to use smart previews to allow me to edit my photo's with or without the external drive connected and have the photo's automatically sync'd when the external drive is re-connected.

But is it possible to have the catalog and previews synced to the notebook, so I could say show someone full screen previews? I know you can't go to the develop module. And until LR smart previews works with my existing catalog, I'd like to know how, and if I would be able to view full screen from the catalog not connected to a harddrive with the original files?

Apr 6, 2014I recently had to format the ext drive that my photos were on. after doing that i put all those photos back. i opened Finder, clicked ext drive titled Photos and placed the parent folder, My Pictures there.
When I now look at the folders panel the parent folder is Photos and then My Pictures. in older catalogs the parent folder was always My Pictures. there are no ?s anywhere. wondering whether i put the photos back in the right way or right place.
Even though i select a specific folder when i now import photos they go to a completely different and new folder and seemingly to a new drive titled Photos. that is also the name of the drive that all the photos are on. when i click "show in finder" all images show the original drive titled Photos. so when you look at the folder panel it looks like there are actually two drives titled Photos and the imported photos are now going to the second Photos drive. in reality there is only one drive titled Photos.
i can't get imported photos to go to the correct drive.
Lightroom :: 4 - How To Change Location Name On All 10000 Photo From D To F Drive
Oct 20, 2012My computers HDD (C:drive)crashed. I have installed a new SSD and totally renewed the installation of my PC including new installation of Lightroom 4.
Luckily I kept my (10.000) photo's ánd LR 4's catalog on D: drive. (And ofcourse also BU on NAS)
Since the new installation the drive that was previously D: is now called F: , I don't know why. D: drive on the new installation is now the DVD- drive
I can restore my catalog but LR4 can't find the photo's. How do I change on all 10.000 photo's te location name from D: to F:???
Lightroom :: Location To Copy Backup LR4 Catalog
Mar 9, 2013I have a brand new ASUS notebook Win 8 64 bit.
LR4.3 installed to the C: drive (default installation). I am now copying from my external drive all photos to the larger D: data drive.
Of course, I have the very latest catalog backed up to multiple places. The old laptop (Windows 7) was just a single C: drive instead of the two drives I now have.
2 Q: 1) To what location do I copy that backup LR4 catalog?
2) As I remember from some years ago, I also need to double-click on that LR4 catalog once it's in the proper place. Is that right?

Oct 1, 2013For a while I've been using my Lightroom on my Mac on a folder inside my Google Drive folder. The reason for this is that I have an online backup as well my 2 external hard drive backups (you can NEVER have too many backups ).

Anyway, my plan is to move my Catalog to another folder in my root drive, aptly titled “Copy”. So, I created a new folder within Lightroom, and went to move it, (whilst using the Lightroom interface) — so far I'm pretty sure this is the correct way, but I've attached a screenshot of the message that came up. This should be ok shouldn't it? I've attached screenshots of where I want to move it to, and the prompt that came up.

Aug 3, 2013My main hdd was about to crash. i bought a new ssd drive. it isnt big enough to fit original os, programs and images. So I moved images from main hdd to an external hdd. I moved catalog to a new primary hdd with a fresh install. When I load the catalog, the images are missing. When I select locate and find target files, I think it's importing them back to the main hdd. Does it move the file or just change where it's pointing to the file. If it moves the file then I will run out of space again and defeat the purpose!!

I've assigned fixed drive letters to both E: and F: I've recently upgraded to an SSD - cloned my entire HDD but now Lightroom shows the content on the 2 external drives swithced around. The folders that are physically on drive E: show as if they shoud be on F: but with the missing icon next to them. And vice versa, the ones that are on F: show as if they should be on E: with missing icon.

Mar 17, 2014I just cloned my hard disk (named PI) to a new one named TAU. Now they both contain my enormous catalog of 800 GB of Lightroom catalog and files.
I removed my initial hard disk PI and put it in a safe location (just saying this so you know I have a backup)
I start Lightroom 5 and open the ircat file on TAU but all the pictures have an ! meaning they are missing (but the pictures are all there). How do I get Lightroom to recognize the new location?
In my catalog settings the path correctly points to the new hard drive and the folder where the photos and catalog are located, however within the application there is no way to navigate among the files and folders of my collection as there was before.
