Lightroom :: Preview Unavailable On LR4 Import But Not In LR3?
Mar 29, 2012
I get 'preview unavailable for this file' when attempting to import files from my Panasonic Lumix DMC LX3 - even though the same images show up fine on import preview for Lightroom 3?
I have Lightroom 3 AND 4 on my machine at the minute, running OSX Lion on Mac, and if I have the same card in the same card reader - I see soem unimported file previews with 3, but not with 4! What the hell - older version seems to work better than the new one!!
for some reason I get the message 'preview unavailable for this file' for about 50% of the photos in the import module of LR4.1. This only seems to be an issue upon import since the files still import as usual and I do not encounter any further issues after the import with developing etc. It's not a huge problem for me but still quite anoying as I am not able to review my photos before actually importing them.
Here are some further details:I am shooting with a Nikon D300s, all photos are in NEF-format, I use USB-mini USB connection between computer and camera. The problem occurs on both my Macbook Pro Retina 2012 and my iMac Mid-2010. The problem only occurs with LR4, I didn't have any problems with LR3.
Suddenly, I am getting the above message, when trying to import RAW files in LR 4.3. I tried with two different cards and two different Readers.
When I click on Import, I get a blank thumbnail of all the photos with the message in it. I was able to see the photos in Finder on the Compact Flash card with no problem.
I have LR and camera up to date for a while, so nothing different has been done that I know of.
I am an amateur photographer. I just purchased a brand new NIKON D3300 took a few pictures, signed up for the Adobe annual Photographers Creative Cloud annual program and my first task to have Lightroom import a few test photos fails and I have no clue why my raw + jpgs can't be imported. at the outset In Lightroom I also got a "Preview unavailable for this file" message for every image file when I pointed to the memory card I had connected to my computer:
The files are not recognized by the raw format support in Lightroom. (35) DSC_0376.NEF DSC_0377.NEF DSC_0378.NEF DSC_0379.NEF DSC_0380.NEF DSC_0381.NEF DSC_0382.NEF DSC_0383.NEF DSC_0384.NEF DSC_0385.NEF DSC_0386.NEF DSC_0387.NEF
I've also attached a screen shot. I would really like to use Lightroom and all the Adobe products but I have no clue why it won't work with my NIKON test pictures.
I'm new to lightroom and currently have the trial of lightroom 4. If I attempt to import directly from either my 5D Mark II or my iphone I get only a few images show up, the rest have a "preview unavailable" message.I can upload these through bridge just fine... I would just like to bypass that step.
I have imported thousands of photos into LR4 without a problem but today I hit a problem. I have converted a number of PDF documents into JPEGs as I wanted them to be available to view via LR. I receive the message that 'Preview is unavailable for this file' and then 'Failed to find a place for the imported file'. The JPEGs are stored on an external drive. When I try the same thing in Aperture the JPEGs load into Aperture without a problem.
During the import of RAW files of my Nikon D5100 no previews are shown, a thumpnail with the text "Preview not available" shows instead. Importing the RAW files is not a problem, once they are imported, the prevews are shown in the Library. I would like to make a first selection during import but without the previews this is not possible. I am working with Lightroom 3.6
I just bought Lightroom 5.2 but I'm not able to preview or import any files from my Synology NAS (4.3 software version) where I keep all my photos.
I see the filestructure and the files but I don't see a preview version of the file and when I import I get "The files appear to be unsupported or damaged".
When I look at files to import on the local harddrive, I see previews of the files so it seems to work there.
I have no problem displaying the NAS photos using OS X Finder. I assume there is some general setting that is wrong because out of 15000 photos I could not import any, only imported 5 short iPhone movies that accidently happened to be stored in the photo file structure.
So I want to import some pics and this statement comes up, " Preview unavailable for this file" see attached. I imported the pics once and then realized that I did not batch name them like I always do. So I deleted them from LR then renamed them in Bridge, then tried to important them again, it is a no go. So I have LR 4.1, I use Mac book pro, Mac os x version 10.7.4. I am pulling these pics off of my external Hard drive, I have never run into this problem before when I was using LR3.
I noted after importing my images from my disk f(to Lr5) that some floral images were missing.Luckily they were on my backup disk so i moved these floral images from my backup disk to the proper floral folder in my int. disk f. Now how do i import these new images that are located in their particular floral folder which are indeed there. Also how do you set up these new files to do a preview setup. did try to import these new images, but lightroom would not let me do it because it grayed out the images telling me that we noted some duplicate images here. Yes, i did see a few dups of these images in the floral file. If i deleted these dups under its proper folder in disk f shouldn't lr5 let me continue the import?
Preview works, but no Import from any SD or CF and even HD! Try internal and external card readers and create a new catalogue, no results. All files from cards or transfered to HD will open properly in PS!
A couple of days ago when I went to shut down my computer ran windows updates automatically and the next morning these updates failed and the previous setting were re-configured. Windows updates ran again the next night and updated sucessfully.
Since then I have been having problems importing autocad into a sketch. In the Layers and Objects Import Options dialog box, the layers are not shown and the autocad objects can not be individually selected.
I was wondering if this is the solution to the problem or if there is a hotfix to solve it without having to un/reinstall programs.
I'm using LIghtroom 5.3, and raw camera 8.3, the latest update available. I found from Adobe's site that this version supports D7100 raw image imports. But when trying to import D7100 raw images, I get a message that "the file is not recognized by the raw format support in LIghtroom."
When importing images to the catalog, both the preview and import image is highly contrasted and saturated. When I use edit in the photo opens as the original image without updates. My import preswet options show none.I am using Windows7 32 bit.
I cannot import files from an epson scanner V750 pro. The screen reads unable to read preview. I am scanning B/W negatives using 16 bit Grayscale and tiff image format?
Lightroom will not display preview images during import of raw images. Any images in other formats display fine but with raw images I get a gray window the size of the preview image and the words "preview unavailable for this file".
I have three (and a half-follow-on) questions on DNG nuances/technical particulars (that are prompted by remarks appearing on the last-updated-about-two-years-ago webpage URL...
First, what (If any) image processing capabilities (such as any further highlight recovery/adjustment, or individual color channel enhancement/ saturation improvement, etc.) are unavailable in Lightroom (LR) or Adobe Camera Raw (ACR) if one opens-with/inputs-or-imports-to LR (or ACR), a Linear DNG (linDNG) image file (which by its ‘linearized’ nature has already had certain image attributes ‘baked’ therein), and what image processing capabilities are fully available in LR/ACR for such a linDNG image in an unrestricted/fully-further-adjustable manner?
Second, is the output file produced by Adobe’s DNG converter when one inputs to it (say) a Nikon NEF raw-image file a (what I refer to as) Raw DNG (rawDNG, akin to those that some camera manufacturers’ cameras are now directly storing on memory cards at image capture), or a linDNG (akin to those produced by various RAW converters such as DxO Optics Pro and Capture One Pro)? If the former, is it possible to apply Adobe’s DNG converter to a linDNG input file (and thereby, effectively, ‘unbake’ whatever settings had earlier been ‘baked’ into that linDNG so that the resulting rawDNG would be once more ENTIRELY/UNRESTRICTEDLY further adjustable in LR/ACR?
Third, if one uses either LR or ACR to open/access/edit a linDNG image file, performs some non-destructive image adjustments on that image with that software platform, and saves the results as a new/differently-named DNG file, will that resulting new DNG file be yet another linDNG-format file, or a rawDNG-format file?
Occasionally cursor will not quit "+" so brush tools unavailable.Been that way thru every version of LR I have used. Need to restart LR every time this happens.LR 5 beta, haven't loaded 5 keeper yet. Mac osx.8.4
I recently bought a Nikon D7100. I took some test shots and imported the images to Lightroom 4.4, then generated 1:1 previews for all the images.
Previews zoomed to 1:1 in Library Mode are noticeably soft. The image below is a screen shot of the Library preview:
Moving to Develop View produces a higher-resolution 1:1 preview. The image below is a screen shot of the Develop preview:
Look at the bricks and window screens to see the difference.
This difference occurs immediately after import (with a User Preset applied during import). Once any Develop work is done, the Library preview updates and displays at full resolution.
This problem makes doing initial editing/selection of images time consuming, because I can't determine the sharpness/quality of imported images until I've done some kind of Develop adjustment on each image.
I am using MacBook (late 2008) OS X 10.9.2 and recently upgraded to Lightroom 5.3 from Lightroom 4. After a while, some photo started to show exclamation mark at the right hand corner of the photo (*.CR2 raw files in NAS) in grid view. When I click on the exclamation mark, it shows a dialog with following message; "Lightroom has encountered problems reading this photo". So, I moved previews.lrdata, which is about 9GB, to the trash and restarted the Lightroom 5, expecting Lightroom 5 to create a new previews.lrdata. However, it won't create any preview at all.
exclamation mark at the top right hand corner of the photos in grid view.
Just downloaded LR 5 and noticed that I cannot jump back from a Publish Service folder preview to a different folder preview in grid mode. The only way to view photos in another folder is to restart LR 5. This only happens when I am viewing photos in a Publish Service such as Flickr.
I updated from LR 4 using Creative Cloud installer.
When I first install Inventor, everything works fine, I can preview the DWG when I import it, choose layers and so on. Then with time, this preview doesn't work and I don't know why nor how to fix this.
I had the problem with 2012, 2013 and now 2014. I installed Inventor from the factory design suite advanced (ultimate) and it worked at the beginning. Now I installed SP1 for Inventor and it doesn't work anymore (I'm not a 100% sure that it's related but it's the latest modification I did).
Now I'm trying to fix this. I uninstalled DWG TrueView 2014 and reinstalled it from the downloaded version (autodesk site). It doesn't work.
I uninstalled vault pro 2014 SP1, then trueview, the design review, reboot, install back vault pro client 2014 then its SP1... still not better, the import window preview is still empty and not showing layers.
As I said it's not the 1st time and it happened on previous versions as well. Is there a solution without uninstalling Inventor ? Anyway I'm afraid that If I uninstall Inventor to install it back, I will encounter the same problem as soon as I will install SP1.
DWG TrueView by itself works fine, I can open my drawings (even Inventor DWG), Autocad Mechanical works fine, everything looks OK but this import thing.
To be complete, here what I have installed from autodesk (and i installed it successively) : Inventor Pro / MDT / DWG Trueview / AOEM View 2009 Inventor Pro / DWG Trueview 2012 Inventor Pro / ACAD Mecha / Navisworks Manage / DWG Trueview / vault pro client 2013 (FDS) FDS Ultimate / Vault Pro (server and client) 2014
I just tried in 2009 and 2013 and the import works. Now in Inventor 2014 it tells me that the DWG was created by a more recent version of DWG Trueview and that I can't import it.
In the registry editor, the Inventor current version is still 2009 (it should be 2014). I'll reboot my computer and see if it's better.
The usual import menue has the options for importing on the right hand side. My system is now showing an import dialouge box and the import dialouge on the right is greyed out. How do I get back to the standard import screen.
This issue occured shortly after update to 4.2, but not directly after. I am using windows 8.
The issue that occurs is after importing images they are adjusted automatically to develop module cross process 1. After dealing with this annoyance for a bit of time I realized that I can not even "RESET ALL" the images to delete the adjustment. In delving into other images that have been in my database for quite some time, I have tried to "RESET ALL", which resets images to CROSS PROCESS 1. I have never set import to automatically adjust.
I just upgraded from LR3.6 to 4.0. When trying to import images the import module freezes for a few minutes and then displays the import screen. However, when selecting a source the program freezes again and eventually crashes.
I had the same issue when upgrading to 3.6 some time ago and then found that disabling some USB controllers solved the problem. This works for LR4 as well. As I don't need all USB connections this is a workable solution, however, disabling controllers should not be necessary to run a program.
System is an Acer Aspire 7811 64 bits w/ Intel i7, Win 7 Home Premium, 8 GB internal mem and no external drives.
I'm using LR4 with a Canon camera setup (Wind 7 Ultimate). I've got the auto import setting all configured with an incoming folder and destination. The app recognizes when an image is put in incoming folder and in fact it moves it to the destination folder. What is really annoying is that it leaves me at the import settings dialog and then I have to make all these choices as I would if I were manually importing.
Shouldn't the images be places in the desination folder and some view of that image be displayed in LR? It could be the folder view or ideally I want to see the last image imported at 1:1 size so I can review it and see if I want to take another shot? Maybe there is some flag I've got set incorrectly.
