Lightroom :: Importing Images From Camera - Randomly Does Not Display Thumbnails
Jul 12, 2012
LR4 seems to have a bug when importing images from a camera where it randomly does not display a thumbnail of the image before invoking the import process. Usually it is whole blocks of images following a few that are properly shown. Perhaps it is dropping the communication link to the camera early?
Furthermore, once the images are imported, different images are not displayed in the thumbnail panel with filters off.
I have been doing identical import procedures on all previous versions of LR without any similar behavior.
I opened up some photos to edit this evening, and have discovered that the camera profile options are gone. All that is available are the two ACR ones. I shot with the same camera and lens as I have before (Nikon D40 and 50mm), and I double checked, and I shot everything in RAW. I don't know what's going on. I'm running Windows 7 64 bit, and have LR 3.6. I would really like to use Camera Standard and Camera Vivid.
While working in LR 4, after several hundred edits for no reason it started converting the images to B/W? Seems to be some sort of glitch, they are color then change to B/W?
I recently acquired the 5DMkIII and after I import the RAW images into LR 4.3RC, LR will, apparently randomly, divide an image into rectangles and color it with psychodelic colors. Out of about 700 images from my last shoot, it has only happened to 3 or 4, so far. But it can happen immediately upon import or on a subsequent viewing/developing of the images. It seems to happen at the time I click on the thumbnail to view or edit the image.I have inserted a sample. This is an image of a hawk on a post (the bird is in the center of the image). Theoretically, I can reimport the image from the CF card and hope it doesn't happen again (assuming I haven't reformated the card). Is this an issue with the camera or LR? It began happening on the Mark III images. I've used 7D, 40D, and XT before this with no problem.
When I open my lightroom, I am not able to view any thumbnails to select for importing. I am able to view slideshows though? How do I view my thumbnails so I can import?
It worked when I first updated Lr to latest version (5,3) but for some reason it's not showing thumbnails anymore when importing pictures from SDCard. I tried re installing with no success.
I don't know where to look for, I am under MAC OS Lion - 10.7 -
I changed Adobe Elements version (from 10 to 11) and Brand New all-in-one Dell XPS computer that comes with Windows 8 as OS (From XP SP3) ... Now my import in Adobe Organzer gets stuck. Adobe Elements sees the camera, and compares the files on my camera to the photos in Organizer and knows how may are duplicates. I then select all the photos it finds as Non-Duplicates and tell it what directory to import into and select (Finish/Import) and it just sits there. I can change anything on that screen for options, but it really is locked up. I have to use Task Manager to end the task so that I can get back into Adobe Organizer.
Ever since I upgraded to lightroom 4 I can't view my files larger before import. Once I import and they are in lightroom I can but I want to be able to edit them larger to make sure I want to import. Some just come up the same size as thumbnails while other files will say "could not read preview.
I've been using the FastPictureViewer Codec pack so that DNG and camera RAW files show as thumbnails in Explorer for quite some time. Upon upgrading to LR4, DNG files no longer display as thumbnails, but as the generic Windows icon for an image.
Upon researching the issue, and upgrading the Codecs from the supplier (which still did not fix the issue), the supplier tells me the following:
What we solved [in the update] was a crash with the new files. Adobe did not document their changes, so there is not much we can do except ignore the files. This is what happens when owners of proprietary formats decide to change stuff without notice.
If you turn off the "fast load" and "lossy" options the DNG will still be created following the published 1.3 specification and will work with 3rd party software including ours.
The "new DNGs" are for Adobe private use only at the moment. We don't know (beyond vague promises on employees personal blogs) if they will ever document what they did and publish an updated specification, they are certainly under no obligation to do so. The decision they took not to release updated DNG specs even before LR4 came out was a deliberate one.
While I resolved the problem by turning "fast load" off, I find it highly disturbing that Adobe has made undocumented changes to the DNG format that break 3rd party software. I thought the whole idea of DNG was that it was an OPEN FORMAT and was to prevent situations such as this. At least this is how they sold it to the public and their argument against "proprietary camera manufactuer RAW formats" that could "change at any time".
I have Lightroom 4.4. and Windows 7--both of which have been working fine for several months. Starting a few days ago, however, thumbnails have refused to load for any NEW photos I import. They appear gray/blank in both Grid view and the film strip. However, if you click on any of the film strip thumbnails (while in either Grid view or Develop mode), that thumbnail and corresponding image WILL load--until up to three have done so. Then they begin disappearing again, allowing you to view no more than three images' thumbnails at any one time.
I can't review a shoot via Grid mode this way. I'm also afraid to use Lightroom while it's misbehaving, for fear of corrupting the catalog somehow (though all the images appear to be there). Searching this forum, I found several people who experienced having all of their thumbnails blank out and who were able to correct this by either reinstalling or removing their color profiling software. However, 1) I did this (and it didn't work), and 2) it isn't that all my thumbnails that have disappeared. All the thumbnails and images imported prior to the bug, still initially display correctly.* And I can get three thumbnails of the newer images to appear at a time.
*The asterisk is because after I poked around some more, I realized that if I opened other folders and began post-processing images from older uploads (vs. just viewing them), the thumbnails that initially displayed correctly everywhere also blank out and begin appearing in this up-to-three-at-a-time fashion.
I'm trying to import photo's taken on a Canon EOS Digital Rebel XS, in a camera raw format with a CR2 file extension. No luck - the pictures are greyed out on the import screen. Added the Camera Raw program, version 7.4. Didn't find our camera in the supported camera's list, but there are plenty of Canon EOS Rebels in there, so thought we'd take a chance.
Our vacation pictures were on IPAD2. I accessed them and thought I was uploading them when I imported them to Lightroom3. I made panoramas and all in photoshop too. My husband asked if the images had been uploaded and I said yes. So he did synched and the update on the IPAD effectively erasing all those images. Now I find that these awesome images were not synched or imported to the computer, but just to lightroom thumbnails. Heartbroken! I can still see the thumbnails in Lightroom... My card has been formated twice since then. I don't think I can recover them there. Is it possible that there is a program that can recover those images to .jpgs from the thumbnails?
Time and time again, I have come across the issue where the thumbnail being displayed in the grid view and loupe view is not of the image itself, but of some other image. So far, the thumbnail is typically from the same folder or collection and can be either from an image that still exists or from one that I've rejected and deleted from disk previously.
If I go into develop mode, the correct image gets displayed, but the thumbnail rarely resets itself.
I've deleted the cache on previous occasions to have LR recreate the thumbnails, but I never know when I'm going to encounter this issue.
This becomes a paint when I am delete unwanted images. If the thumbnail is incorrect on my second or third pruning, I could actually lose an image I intended to keep.
I'm running Lightroom 5.3 from CC.
It seems that deleting the cache every day--maybe even several times a day--is a bit overkill, but seems to be the only way to deal with this problem.
I always get an error "The following files were not imported because they could not be read. (152)" when try to import photos from my iphone 4s and nikon p310
I have to import useing image capture or use a card reader
I occasionaly edit nudes on my home computer, where my kids have access. Is there a way to keep these images hidden, their location hidden or have them not show in the library thumbnails?
Is there a way to import my raw file with the camera picture settings from my camera. I use a personally edited version of the camera vivid from my d300. The files are imported without the settings and get set to adobe standard in my camera calibration. I use lightroom 4 with cs5 64 bit.
LR 3.6 has worked OK before, but now stopped importing photos (jpeg and raw) from my cameras (Canon 5D Mk 3, Canon Powershot 100). Program goes to "does not answer" - status and must be closed. The problem seems to be similar in my Elements 8. Importing from my Canon G10, LR says that there is not preview available, but importing succeeds. All cameras import photos to Windows (7) or Picasa normally.
When I import photos using iPhoto or Aperture, I get an option to delete them off the camera when the import completes. That feature is really useful when there are deveral hynred photos in memory. How do I accomplish the same thing using Lightroom 4?
Lightroom will not display preview images during import of raw images. Any images in other formats display fine but with raw images I get a gray window the size of the preview image and the words "preview unavailable for this file".
When I try to connect my Nikon D610 with a USB cable to import RAW files (i.e. .NEF), I need to open manually LR and click on the Import button to start importing even if Automatic Import is activated.
When I import CR2 files (Canon RAW) that have XMP files alongside them into my Lightroom 4 catalog, Lightroom correctly reads image adjustments from XMP files and assigns them as Develop settings for the newly imported photos. This is how I expected it to be. Lightroom assigns older process version to these files, as it should be.
One quick question I have though: once I imported all these CR2 files into my collection, is it safe to delete all those XMP sidecar files immediately? I assume that Lightroom stores all Develop settings in the catalog file at the moment of the import and that XMP sidecars are no longer necessary. Is that correct? Or do I have to enter the Develop mode with each imported file first, before deleting the XMP in order to make old settings to "stick"?
I import photos direct from camera (5DII) into Lightroom 4.3 the folder automatically created in Lightroom is one day out from the date photo created. Camera, computer and metadata info of file all have correct date. Windows 8 OS.
Anyway, I just updated to the Factory Design Suite Advanced package for 2011 which, of course, includes Inventor. I have downloaded and installed all updates, service packs and hotfixes I could find btw. What happens is I'll be working in Inventor on a solid model of ANY size (even a single part) and with absolutely no warning, the display window will freeze up and won't refresh. What's really weird though is that Inventor itself is not locked up. I can click on any of the buttons or any of the items shown in the browser as though the program's running normally. I can check the task manager and it shows Inventor to be running normally. The memory status bar in Inventor shows lots of available memory. I can even hover over the display window in the area where the view steering wheel is located and the icon will change appearance as though it's working normally. I can even save the file. If I close the file, it responds like normal and goes back to the default screen. If I try to open ANY file after that, however, the screen will not refresh or show me the file I opened, even though everything else works fine and the program isn't frozen. The only way to restore full function is to completely close and reopen Inventor (on average I have to do this about once an hour). Btw, I'm also working in a local directory stored on my hard drive, not a network.
My first inkling is that it's a graphics issue but I have played with all the display settings to no avail. I ran a diagnostic on the video card and Inventor says that I'm running an Autodesk Certified driver. All the specs are within reason I think.
My workstation specs:
Dell Precision M4500 laptop
Intel core i7 processor, 2.67 GHz
4 GB RAM
Windows XP Professional SP3, 32-bit, running in 3 GB mode
NVIDIA Quadro FX 1800M, 1 GB graphics card (just updated the driver too...no change)
I would like to see the focus point my camera used superimposed on the image in Lightroom with a setting and a keyboard shortcut toggle to turn this on and off. I shoot Nikon D200 and D700 bodies.
is there an option to delete photos after importing from a camera or smart phone? For example, import selected photos from a camera and then delelte those photos on the camera after importing them.
When importing some of the images have a warning triangle indicating that LR is having trouble reading the photo. Subsequently the rendering of the 1:1 previews stalls.
