I recently scanned several old slides and saved them as dng files. But some of the editing functions don't work on these files - specifically gradient filter, adjustment brush and HSL adjustments. I don't really want to have to save them as jpgs before editing them - that defeats the purpose of having saved them as dngs.
View 1 RepliesAdmittedly, I am fairly new with Lightroom but I am totally at a loss to explain what has happened. I wanted to create a new catalog to move some files into. I went File>New Catalog and then in the "Create folder with new catalog" dialogue box, I typed in my new name and hit "save". Boom. Lightroom closed right down. When I opened it back up, all of my folders and catologs were gone. Nothing appears in the navigation section on the left side other than the headings, "Catalogs", "Folders", "Collections", etc and they are empty. In "My Computer" all of the folders are still there with the DNG files in place, but LR will not show them to me. why I can no longer access my catalogs?
View 16 Replies View RelatedAs part of my workflow I import through Lightroom, then edit into Photoshop. This creates file 1 & 2 of 2 in my Lightroom. After editing all of the selected pictures into PSD files I routinely provide clients with smaller JPG's. I do this by opening the PSD flattening, shrinking, sharpening and "save as" into JPG's.
This does not create a third file in Lightroom and when I go to import the new JPG's Lightroom does not see them. I can open a Finder window ( I use a MAC) and see the files, but cannot get Lightroom to see them to import, then export to other media.
When using LR3 to create DNG files from my RAW files, those files would show me thumbnails of my image in Windows Explorer. I am running Windows/7 (64) and have installed a CODEC from "Fast Picture Viewer" that allows thumbnails from RAW & DNG files to be shown. It seems, however, that the thumbnails do not show for DNG's created with LR4.
To Remedy this I uninstalled the CODEC. Downloaded the most recent version and installed it but this did not fix the problem.
I then went to the user forum for the CODEC product and searched for my problem. I found a thread who's solution is to turn off "Embed Fast Load Data" when exporting to DNG and it fixes the problem. I tried this and indeed it did fix it. The responder went on to say ".....When this option is enabled the files created are no longer DNGs (just an undocumented private format of Adobe that no one else can read to this date)". This statement surprised me as it is counter to what I understand Adobe created DNG to be. Can I get some input on this comment as if true it is very troubling.
My second question is that I see where to turn off the "Embed Fast Load Data" in the LR Export module, but where do I do the same thing in the Import module when I'm selecting import mode "Copy to DNG"?
If indeed the DNG files created by LR4 are proper DNG files and this CODEC is just flawed in some way, any better way to allow image thumbnails to be shown in Windows Explorer?
I've been using the FastPictureViewer Codec pack so that DNG and camera RAW files show as thumbnails in Explorer for quite some time. Upon upgrading to LR4, DNG files no longer display as thumbnails, but as the generic Windows icon for an image.
Upon researching the issue, and upgrading the Codecs from the supplier (which still did not fix the issue), the supplier tells me the following:
What we solved [in the update] was a crash with the new files. Adobe did not document their changes, so there is not much we can do except ignore the files. This is what happens when owners of proprietary formats decide to change stuff without notice.
If you turn off the "fast load" and "lossy" options the DNG will still be created following the published 1.3 specification and will work with 3rd party software including ours.
The "new DNGs" are for Adobe private use only at the moment. We don't know (beyond vague promises on employees personal blogs) if they will ever document what they did and publish an updated specification, they are certainly under no obligation to do so. The decision they took not to release updated DNG specs even before LR4 came out was a deliberate one.
While I resolved the problem by turning "fast load" off, I find it highly disturbing that Adobe has made undocumented changes to the DNG format that break 3rd party software. I thought the whole idea of DNG was that it was an OPEN FORMAT and was to prevent situations such as this. At least this is how they sold it to the public and their argument against "proprietary camera manufactuer RAW formats" that could "change at any time".
I have been using LR4, and am starting to learn Photoshop CS6. I thought I understood that there was not need to make a copy when editing a photo from Lightroom in Photoshop. However, Martin Evening's Lightroom 4 book (page 394 if you have it) states 'once you have converted a photo to black and white in Lightroom and edited in Photoshop, there is no opportunity to go back to the colour original'. He then talked about it being better to create an edit copy version
the original file would be lost in Lightroom. He also suggested that Virtual Copies may not be a good idea - something about if the catalog became corrupted you could lose the Virtual Copies, and it would be better to create a 'Real File'
So if I were to do some edits in LR4, including convert to B&W, then do further work in Photoshop, would it be better, or necessary to create another Edit Copy of the file so I had the original + another original I could then do the work on. And shoulkd I do this on all files
This problem only occurs with files that I have been imported from cd's/dvd's into the libraryand I get the msg "Lightroom was unable to prepare the selected file for editing. It will not be opened." Files that are stored on my hard drive have NO PROBLEM in being edited. .
I am new to Lightroom and currently using it on the 30 day trial I have been using PSE for a long time and have over 90,000 images in Organizer and all of my images are on cd's/dvd's, very few are stored on the hard drive.
Lightroom was working fine moving between LR and Nik. Then suddenly I get this error message. How do I fix it? Editing photos in Nik sofware when this message popped up.

Obviously straight portions are not a problem and can be handled by moving the anchor point of the path. However, I have created a pattern brush with 6 parallel lines and I am designing a typeface for a Typography class. There are areas where the brush lines overlap.

Later on, when I want to furhter edit those images, how do I start with? Obviously, I could re-edit from history panel of the orignal NEF file or tiff file using CS5. I wonder which approach is more efficient or convenient?

Suddenly yesterday it stopped editing and I have to click a few more times to type the number in. It's totally messing up my work flow and whatnot. The option in application options is checked as well.

I have some old photos that I intend to scan into LR4 using a CanoScan 9000E - I also have the negatives.Is there any advantage to scanning from the negatives v the photos? Does scanning the negs give me more control over any post work I do in LR4

View 1 Replies View RelatedAfter scanning a silde as a TIFF, when I import into the Lightroom library the file size is only about 1/6th the size of the file scanned onto my hard drive. A 50MB scan becomes an 8MB LR file. If I take the file into Photoshop it is still 50MB. I tried saving the photoshop file with a different name and then bringing into LR but it still ends up at 8MB. I get the same problem using both VueScan 9.0.90 and Silverfast 8.0 scanning software. How do I keep the original file size?

when I scan to my computer it was set to go to my documents, now it goes to Lightroom. When I try to open it in my documents it is a lightroom link and sends me to lightoom. the same thing happens with photos I take and import from my card. they are not a proper jpeg they have a lightroom icon and no matter what I do clicking on the photo takes me to and opens up lightroom.

i'm getting HUGE files on my secondary hard drive, and i think they are because i designated it as my primary scratch disk. the size of the files are from 175,000kb-245,000kb. an example of the file name is "Photoshop Temp3347028". can someone tell me what these are, and if i need them all? i'm sure i can delete at least some of them, but i just wanted to make sure before i go messing anything up. does it seem normal to have these files? my system is a bit unstable, and sometimes my computer crashes when using photoshop and i have other programs open. i have 1 gig of ram, but it crashes nevertheless. i'm mentioning this because i was wondering if these files might have something to do with photoshop crashing my system.

View 8 Replies View RelatedIt appears that Photoshop on an osx machine is also creating a ._Pictures Name.jpg file for each jpg in the same folder as the jpg. Is that a Photoshop or osx thing? is there a way to prevent all those extra files from being created?
We put the folders of jpg's on the windows server, then have to go through and manually kill all those ._files before we can use the folder.
I work in a collaborative environment. I've upgraded to CS6, but those i work with are working in photoshop cs5.1. Will they have problems opening files i create or save in CS6?

The same relates to the .tif files. It's not corruption of the files, it's happening to every new-written file I try to move between computers. View 4 Replies View RelatedShooting with Canon 5DmkII DSLR, which provides 1920x1080 .MOV files at 29.97 fps. Data rate on the files is about 45Mbps, with a total bit rate marginally higher.I have been asked to output .MOV at 29.97, 1920x1080 progressive with PhotoJPEG compression at 90%, square pixels.
In Proj. Properties, I seem to need Microsoft AVI (MPEG doesn't allow 1920x1080 option). No compression, and have obviously kept 29.97 fps. Whether I want to perform non-square pixel rendering at this point, and haven't yet found any info on whether the camera shoots square or non-square pixels. Or I want frame-based or upper or lower fields first. I haven't found any explanation of what this means in the product documentation.
I've created an output template to give 1920x1080 at 29.97 fps, 24-bit colour. Again don't know whether to pick frame-based or upper or lower field first. Using PhotoJPEG compression (100% seems the only setting available, but that's OK).
In the final Create dialogue box Options, there is another chance to render non-square pixels (I'm assuming "no" here since I want square), as well as a checkbox for Smart Render, but again no explanation as to why I would need it.
So I've been practicing with 10sec clips to see what happens. With the above settings, the creation takes a couple of minutes and I have been able to generate a huge 1.6GB output file. Play is somewhat jerky since I don't think my computer can keep up. The input files are e.g. 233MB for 44sec, or about 5.3 MB/sec. Am I wrong to expect the output to be about the same size? Curiously, I have been able to generate 50MB files for two of the videos, and the rendering only took a couple of seconds. Unfortunately I have not been able to repeat this, but rather get these 1.6-1.7GB files as the routine. I have tried different input files with the same result.

I have tried to burn a disc with .mpg .mpg 2 .mp4 and .wmv formats and ALL have failed. I have created chapters in V Studio and they are not seen once i click on create disc and I have gone thru the grief of recreating the chapters
All of this has failed, at the end - 99% of burning. With the .wmv file, burning failed after 10 seconds. I have been able to sucessfully burn a disc using Windows burning software, so I know my drive is working fine, but really want to do this professionally (windows software created its own chapters and they are NOT where I want them and don't seem to be editable.
I have a presentation in less than 2 weeks, and need to have DVD ready before then
I can't open my subassembly file, when I'm trying to do so, I get this message?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI've sliced an image for publishing to the web and saved it as an HTML file using the Save for Web command (PSC3). It is my understanding that PS creates the images and pages according to the options set in the Save for Web dialog, however, when viewed, the page shows place holders for the slices, but only red X's for the images. The resulting HTML code references a number of GIF files located in an "images" folder, but I cannot find the location of that folder. Search does not show a folder, nor the referenced file names.
Am I mis-understanding the HTML option in the Save for Web process? If not, where did PS put the images it supposedly created from the slices?
I have heard that the new Photoshop CC uses a new file system that is not compatible with older versions of Photoshop so you can only edit them in the new Cloud version of Photoshop CC.

So to get the proxy files, I have to select all the clips in the timeline and right click to check "create proxy files". What I have to do in order to get automatically the proxy files.
