Illustrator :: Set Inner Bleeds For Facing Pages?
Apr 27, 2013
I am designing the layout for a 8.5" x 8.5" children's book to be uploaded to an online publisher, and they require a .25" bleed around all the outside edges, except for a no ink area of .125" on the bind side. The document must be set up for single pages rather than spread. The document must be saved as postscript so I can create the pdf using Distiller (per the printer). How do I accomodate a different set of bleeds for facing (even/odd) pages within one Illustrator document?
Here are the guidlines I was given (this is the only image):

Is this even possible? Or will I need to use InDesign? The document is already setup in Illustrator with an individual artboard for each page, and I'd rather not go through the hassle of transferring it all to InDesign. If I must, though, what is the best option for setting it up as an InDesign document, and how can I adjust these bleeds accordingly while retaining a singlepage pdf for saving as postscript?

is it possble to arrange artboards in Illustrator CS6 so page 1 is on its own and pages 2 and 3 (and 4 and 5 etc) are facing each other as they would be in a printed book. In other words the same way as in InDesign?

When working on a document with facing pages, with previous versions of CorelDraw htting the page up or page down keys on the keyboard would change to the next set of pages.
With Draw X5, you have to hit page up or page down twice to switch to the next set of pages.
Not a huge deal to hit it twice now, but is there a way to set X5 to the previous behavior where with facing pages one page down would take you from page set 1-2 to 3-4?

I've just published to PDF a booklet I created. It will be printed but my client asks me for a screen version to be mailed. The problem is that if I set Acrobat Reader to "facing pages" the front cover (page 1) is displayed with page 2, but I want the cover to be shown alone and then page 2&3, 4&5 and so on until the back cover.
I hope this makes a sense to you.
Is there a way to create such a PDF document from Corel Draw X4?

I have a document I created in Illustrator CS4 (Mac OSX 10.5.8) with 1/4 inch bleeds.It's a rather small document and the bleeds are very distracting (but I need them for final printing).
Is there a way to preview the document on my monitor without the bleeds? If so, how?

Is there an easy way to create bleeds and trim marks for multiple objects on the same page?
For instance, I have a playing card that I've tiled across the page 6 times ( so that I can create 6 cards out of 1 page ). Each card needs it's own bleed/trim marks.
I'd also like to have printer registration marks for the page, as I have to print the card backings on another page and then glue the two pages together.
The only way I've found that I can do this is to manually create the trim marks for each object's bleed and just have them all within 1 artboard.
I tried doing it with multiple artboards within one larger artboard, but couldn't get that to work.
Is this something that just needs to be manually done?

Working on Adobe CS6..A sign maker has asked me to submit my artwork for different signs (quite a few of them, in different-sizes) as EPS with crop/trim marks.
For instance: The size of this sign is 24"x24" with a .25" bleed. The Artboard shows the right size, and the crop marks show uo as they should. But once I let go of the Artboard, no crop marks show on my screen.
Any crop mark I try adding via the Object ("Create Trim Marks") or Effect menu for crop marks, both cases would create them around the BLEEDS, rather than the REAL ARTBOARD, which, of course, defies the purpose of a crop or trim mark...
I usually submit files for production saved as PDF w/bleeds & crop marks, but this sign maker wants them as EPS.Is there a way around it, other than create those marks manually?

So I am desinging a business card for a company I work for. The company we are sending them off too obviously needs to have the bleed and trims marks. The only thing I can't figure out is how do I make the bleed marks visible to them? When I print the document it shows me the trim marks but since I have a white background, it looks as if there is no border. Should I add a border to the actual Artboard?

Is there a way to specify 1/8" bleeds on 3 sides only when either publishing to pdf or when printing to cutepdf, etc?
(for a pdf that will be imposed outside of coreldraw later)
Or do I have to just adjust the page size to include the bleeds within the page area itself on the 3 sides I want them on within coreldraw?

I have a book cover which I am preparing for printing...I have been told I have to extend the boundary of the artwork for 3mm to allow room for trimming (bleeds). I would like to copy 3mm from the edge of the existing artwork and paste all around the edge of the artwork to extend the boundary by 3mm but GIMP won't let me do this.

I am having issue with a simple project. It's a simple green chroma keying project which looks ok inside Premiere, but once exported it turns into a nightmare. I will post screens instead of writing the details. I am not using any external plugins. The output is rendered with tweaked settings for H.264 Vimeo 720p 29.97 fps MP4 format. I'm working with an NDA, but the problem is only in the shadows as far as I can tell.
This is how it looks inside premiere (both reference and program look the same) This is how the matte looks.And this is the final render (checked in Quick Time and VLC).Never in my life of editing in Pr, FCPX or Smoke have I enountered this issue before.

I needed to re-use an existing pdf (for a business card, with bleeds and marks), which was last saved with AI CS6. So, in order to get the filename in the "new" pdf to reflect the new use, I opened in in Illustrator CS6, and just re-saved with the new filename. Now my 1-page pdf suddenly has 4 pages; pages 1 and 2 look like they should, but pages 3 and 4 don't have bleeds showing.! What???
I used a custom in-house joboptions file for the settings; this joboptions file did start in InDesign, but has never caused problems before, and I have used it often in Illustrator. I just deleted the extra/new pages, and proceeded, but I am confounded by this.

I want to put 2 .pdf pages on one page. I used to do it with Illustrator (CS5) and it worked just fine up until now, but now (when I import .pdfs) Illustrator gives prompts like:
"The font Arial is missing. Affected text will be displayed ..."
Is there any way of eliminating such prompts with those .pdfs?

Carlos, you created a script i believe called AI_openMultiPagePDF.However i was wondering if you could change it just a bit and instead of opening the files, could you use the PLACE command instead?
The problem i have had is that some PDF's have embedde fonts that i dont have but if i place it, then flatten transparency>Convert Outlines i can use the PDF excatly as it was and not have it convert the fonts.
Is that an easy script change?
#target illustrator
#targetengine session
// script.name = AI_openMultiPagePDF_CS4_CS5_v1.02.jsx;
// script.description = opens a multipage PDF;
// script.required = requires CS4 or later
// script.parent = CarlosCanto // 01/07/12; v1.2-01/15/12
// script.elegant = false;
I didn't try opening a ridiculous amount of pages, I "only" open 35 pages....in about a minute and a half. Use with caution, save everything before running, script is memory intensive...
// Lion fix by John Hawkinson 01/15/12
START UI CODE, create user interface
var win = new Window ("dialog", "MTools - Open Multipage PDF");
[code]....

I couldn't find where this was covered, but I create a dxf from my .ipt files for the machines to cut from. When I RMB on the flat pattern, in the browser, the dxf is created with the bends down. I am needing to do this with the bends up, so when the laser operator stacks the parts cut, the flat will be in the proper position for the brake operator. Is there anyway to have my dxf created where the bends are facing up?

I'm following a tutorial which involves augmenting an existing engineering drawing. Part of the tutorial involves using the MOVE command.
I've been asked to move a facing brick to a new location, however when entering the co-ordinates the brick moves to a completely wrong position.
Here are the steps I'm going through:
Click Move command;
Highlight brick;
click enter;
Enter first co-ordinate;
Comma,
Enter second co-ordinate;
Then Enter.
However, the image them moves to the wrong area.

I work on Mac and would like to print a design over multiple pages. The recurring problem however is that the printed sheets have a thin unprinted, blank border. I've tried various options in the print dialogue box, including all the borderless page setup options. This 2mm border keeps appearing in my prints. This is for silkscreening, so even though its only a 2mm border, this gap prevents me from putting all the printed sheets together as one design. The design, via the print dialogue box, is being saved as a PostScript file due to doing colour separations.

I want to rotate three objects along a circular orbit, horizontally. But I want the objects always facing camera. I added the three objects to my comp, added a circle shape layer and rotated it to lay horizontally, then placed each object along the circle shape, rotating it slightly for each new object, then parenting each object to the circle once it was in the right place. From there, I added a camera and a null, parented the circle shape to the null, and set keyframes to rotate the null along the Y rotation.
The result is that the objects indeed rotate along the circular orbit, as I want, but they TURN as they rotate, which is not what I want. I've tried applying "Auto Orient...Orient Toward Camera" and "Orient Along Path", neither of which work. I've applied this to the null, the circle shape, and the objects. They all still turn.
Here's a screen for some context: Using CS5, but have a trial of CS6 if that's useful

I am having a problem trying to get text to fit to exact dimensions. Here is a link to a graphic representation of the problem I will explain below: [URL] ..........
This is an example of a plaque I'm working on. The red box Q will be a photograph while the black box will be text (represented by the blue lines). I have a specific body of text that needs to fit inside the black box such that the left margin (segment AB) is exactly 1/2 inch from box Q. Further, the text should also be exactly 1/2 inch from box Q at segment BC, such that the top of the text meets this 1/2 inch margin.
I can't make the text fit correctly. If you notice the text line labeled Z, you'll see that the top of the text does not reach the segment BC, meaning that the distance between box Q and the top of the text Z is much greater than 1/2 inch. If this is the case, the picture in box Q will be surrounded by unequal space on the right (AB) as compared to the bottom (BC). Furthermore, the text beginning at point A and the text labeled X also need to reach the exact margins of the black box to meet the exact dimensions of the borders of the final piece.
When I use something like Text > Paragraph Text Frame > Fit Text to Shape, what happens is the line labeled Y clearly sits to low, making the line spacing force line Z too far from segment BC.

I'm making a book with large full bleed illustrations on each page.For ease of use I would like to use regular photoshop fonts. If I flatten and save my pages as Tiff files will it be the same as outlining fonts in Illustrator? In other words I won't have to include fonts. I am then going to drop the pages in InDesign in correctly paginated spreads to staple in the middle.
