Illustrator :: Keep Black Stroke Of Character While Rigging For AE
Nov 13, 2012
Creating a character to animate in AE. When cutting up model, like the arm, the continuity of the black stroke becomes broken when rotated. I know a lot of people do not use black strokes or outlines thereby not having the problem, but I want to keep my black outlines of my character.

Moving the Global Control moves the entire rig - Awesome.
Rotating the Global Control rotates the entire rig - Also Awesome.
But when I scale the Global Control, the bones associated with the arms don't scale. To clarify: The arm bones still conform to their position/orientation constraints, as well as the IK chain, but they remain the same size upon scaling.
I'm following along with Delano Athias' "Character Rigging for Production in 3ds Max", provided by Digital-Tutors.Upon closer inspection, the IK side of things also moves when rotating. Almost as if the swivel angle is changing (currently its parametres are wired to an arm Control)

Xara Photo and Graphic Designer 6 outputs and importing them into Anime Studio 7pro for character rigging.
I was curious if I should create my characters in Xara and export them as AI files... if transparency fills translate well, or should I just do concepts in Xara and vector them out in ASP7pro?

I am having trouble rigging my character using the bone systems in 3 ds max. I boned out the front leg and cloned the bones for the other front leg, and that went well. the problem came when i tried to create the bones for the back legs. When i try to make the bones, they will only go on the x and y axis. I think the z axis is constrained somehow.

I'm wanting to know the best way to make different game outfits for a character. I want to be able to switch out between a couple different torsos and still have the same head model and rigging with animations still working.
I'm not sure if this is the best way or not but I detached a cylinder into two separate pieces.
Then I skinned and weight painted one half of the cylinder, weight painting the seam 50% to both bones and decreased that amount as I went father away from the seam. Then doing the same thing to the other half of the cylinder.
For example if this was the game character I would detach his arms, legs, and head from his torso and do the same thing I did with the cylinder.
I've included a link to a video of the cylinder bending.

I'm currently rigging a character who is standing in a relaxed pose. Everything works fine until I get to the hands. The hands are also relaxed and a bit bent which makes it a bit hard to get the joints exactly where I want them. I have to jump between every viewport view to tweak the joints.. and it's rather tedious. I've read on several animation forums that people prefer to rig a character in relaxed position and that the T-pose is pretty much outdated. I watched a video from Naughty Dogs (the studio behind Uncharted game-series) and apparently they rig their characters in relaxed pose.

I am having issues with rigging a simple character in Maya 2013. I was able to set up the joints and the skeleton but when I move the joints to start animating, the model moves separatly from the skeleton. It seems to be moving in the same direction but exponentially more than the skeleton, creating separation between the model and the skeleton. I am new to rigging and was going off the tutorial and am stuck at this point.

I've got some letters with a black inside stroke. These are 3D letters, therefore the stroke must be in the inside otherwise it spills out the edges if I put it outside or centered.
I've tried adjusting the cap/limit and all other options on the stroke menu without luck How can I fix these corner errors? I'm on Illustrator CS5.

I am using CS5.5, and I was watching a video of someone using CS6 inking a sketch with a calligraphic brush that has black stroke and white fill. I am trying to do the same thing, but every time I select the fill color and start using the brush it goes back to "none" as the fill option. Is this a CS6 exclusive feature?

I have a new problem in Maya 2013. When I select the mesh and select 3D paint it turns black... and if I set any color I paint with grays. It happens with all my characters, and I didn't had this problem before.

Is there a way or an option I am missing to convert my regular paths to a path stroked with a brush profile, while maintining the proper stroke width?
For instance, I have a regular line with a stroke of 5 and then add a brush profile, which then converts the original stroke to whatever the brush was made at.

I have a shape with a black stroke and green fill. I have a white line segment over it. How do I get it so that the end of the line segment doesn't show over the black stroke of the object? If I try to put the line segment behind the object, then the object fill hides it completely.
I'm new to illustrator and I've tried to search for an answer but I don't know the best way to accomplish what I want to do. Seems like some combination of transparency or knockout groups and I've read a bit about this and can't figure out what I need to do.

I have the trial version for my laptop (windows), and we use a Mac at school. Anyway, I have an assignment to do and it involves creating a 1 pt. black stroke around an image. I found where it says "stroke" but it is either grayed out at top under 'edit', or down on the right 'add a layer style' I hit stroke and nothing changed on my photo. I have looked at the Help menu and tried what they said and still the image won't change. Please help! This assignment is due tonight (I wasn't able to get Photoshop to unzip and open on my computer all weekend which is why it took this long).

After upgrading to OS 10.8, I can no longer print a black stroke around a picture in LR 4.2 on a HP Designjet Z3100. Am using the same presets that worked six months ago. A stroke of any other color will print, but not black. Works fine onother printers.

I'm trying to figure out a way to automate a simple, yet repetative process I do countless times a day. Ideally, I'd like to tie it to a keystroke to speed up my workflow.
I work on line art and colorways for footwear, so the way I'm coloring these shapes and strokes break apart the different materials and pieces of the shoe.
While coloring line art, I work with Pantone spot colors as fills for closed path objects. I then have to manually apply that same color to the stroke, set the stroke to 0.5px weight, convert that spot stroke color to CMYK, and add 15% to the K value.
I found some code in an older post for applying the actively selected object's fill color to the stroke, but I'm having but I'm having trouble with the next step of figuring out how to take that spot stroke color and convert it to a CMYK build that I can then add 15% black to. Is this something that's even possible? I've spent about an hour playing with the script and have only had luck matching the fill color or turning the stroke white.

I am saving a PDF from Illustrator CS4 that contains only 100% black text. My print provider is telling me that the text in the PDF has been converted to 4C, rich black. I have tried all different PDF creation settings (high quality, press quality, PDFX3, default) from Illustrator but nothing works. How can I create a PDF that maintains 100% black and prevents it from converting to process black?

I'm needing to loop through each character of a text frame and check the color of each character. Is it possible to get the swatch name of each character? Or can you only get the red, green, blue values?
I've been experimenting with:
app.activeDocument.textFrames[0].characters[3].characterAttributes.fil lColor.typename;
// Returns SpotColor
But I can't figure out how to get the swatch name of the character this way?

I cannot change the font on the character pallet.
If I click on the font or drop down "set the font family" on the character menu, nothing happens.
If I type in the entire font name, I can switch font, or if I go to Type>Font I can change fonts.
But the actual character pallet seems inoperative.
Windows XP (service pack 3)
Illustrator CS6
The pallet worked for a short time when I updated from 16 to 16.0.3 (32 bit) but after an hour or so stopped working again.
I've never ran into this at home (windows 7 & 8) just at work.

Is there a specific way that I should save or setup the document?

I'm wondering why some fonts arent visible in my character viewer. I am using Illustrator Version15.0.2 on a MacBook Pro running 10.9.1. I have included 2 screen shots below for a visual reference.
Additionally, I'd like to understand how the fonts in the character viewer menu are organized. I know they are alphabetical, but what are the grey divider lines representing?
Can I deactivate non-english language fonts so that this menu is less conjested with fonts I never use? I've used Illustrator for years. Which fonts are actually non-english. As a side note, I use Font Explorer X Pro to manage my fonts.
