Illustrator :: How To Keep Intersecting Area Of Path
May 11, 2012
I've been looking high and low for this and I can't seem to find an answer. I have two paths, some text and a line going through the text. I want to be able to keep the part of the line that intersects with the text, and leave the text intact. All of the "Pathfinder" modes seem to either not keep the intersecting part, or delete the rest of the text also. Is there something I'm missing?

I need to determine whether an area intersects with another area. The left case can be easily determined by Polyline.IntersectWith(Polyline...).But in the right case, the two polygons intersect/overlap each other while polylines do not intersect.
What would be the efficient way to determine the right case polygons are intersecting polygons?

Like in a Circle I need to make the compound path the inner area or negative space of my objects. I have expanded letters and joined their paths so that there are negative space, I was wondering if it were possible to fill in the negative space with a clipping mask? (like one would with an object like a circle or rectangle) The letter that I am using is an A and I have connected two A's together like a diamond reflecting each other... Is it possible to create a clipping mask to cover the negative space of the inside of the letters...?

It also includes some editted type that intersects with more editted type. I really to need to combine them to a single line without the intersection of the half "x" and the top serif of the "g". I included a project file.
PS: I had attempted to use the Pathfinder Unite command, with no success. URL....

I know this was possible in CS3 but since CS4 I think it has been deleted. I'm Struggling with the following:
- Let's say I have 5 elements that are NOT overlapping. I know that it was in possible in CS3 to "add" these together so that you'd have 1 element that was completely editable. You could for instance put an object on top of the elements > use the pathfinder to delete a part, and all previous 5 elements would be edited (because now it was 1 element).
- If I try this by doing this the same way as I used to in CS5, this doesn't work anymore. No matter how hard I try to join the non overlapping elements it doesn't work in CS5. If I do the exact same thing as described above I'll be left with the same 5 elements and the deletion will only happen in 1 element.
Was this something that was altered in CS4? And if so, how do I do it now?

After selecting the area type tool, I try to click and drag but I get an error message: You must click on a non-compound, non-masking path to create text inside a path. This worked before but I must have screwed something up.

When creating a new path in the paths palette, the thumbnail indicates with white, the area enclosed, and with grey, the area excluded. When I create new paths, it keeps indicating 'outside' the path as the area 'enclosed'. I then have to go through a painful process of converting path to selection, selecting inverse, converting selection to path and adjusting the new path to how I want it again.
How do I directly invert the (positive) area selected by the path?

I'd like to create custom effects using paths. Is it possible to distort a (rectangle) area along a given path? Let's suppose for instance I have a gradient in a rectangle area and I drew an open path manually with a few nodes forming waves, loops; I'd like to have the rectangle area "follow" the path and be distorted accordingly. Mathematically that would suppose:the rectangle area would be stretched to fit the path length andthe rectangle area could be "bent" using its gravity centre as a reference point. That'd be useful for creating smoke effects for instance. Can Gimp 2.6 do this or is there a plugin?

I have some negative space I created(black area, see first image) that I want to fill with type, not just a simple fill.
Basically I want to create the negative space from a bunch of small minus signs(-) that need to line up as they go across. If I type on each path one at a time as the text doesn't line up that way. This needs to be one continuous path. (see second image)
Unfortunately if I add them together, it creates a compound path, which you cannot type on, unless I am mistaken? So I need them to be a path, not a compound object.

In illustrator, is there a way to reduce anchors points in a segment path without altering the path?
Is there a better and more efficient way to reduce anchors points than using the pen-minus tool?

I've tried every permutation of copy and paste; I renamed the path to path. It looks like a path when I add stroke, but it does not behave like one. I can't cut it or join it to any other path. It remembers it's text path status. I'm running OS X 10.7.5.

I accidentally converted a path to a text path. I searched the forum for how to convert it back to a regular path. The answer I found said to select the path and hit Command+C+F. This gives me another text path! I now have at least 6 copies of the path in my files but they are ALL text paths and none are visible with a stroke.

I've got two paths. They don't intersect, exactly, a straight path ends at a curved path, but I need the end of the straight path to be curved, to make it look like the two meet perfectly. The two gray paths (a single path, then path->offset for the second) are the outside of a shield shape. The two black lines (paths) just surround text, but currently they overlap the gray paths.

I created text on a curved path using the pen tool and the the type on a path tool. However, there are portions of the text that I want to taper. For example, my text begins horizontally, continues to the right, and gradually curves downward. As the text curves downward I would like it to taper smoothly into a narrower and narrower text.

I'm trying to create an effect of small text following the outline of very large bold block text (see picture). The idea I had was to first create the 'ME' in very large font as text. Then convert that text to an object / path using "Object -> Flatten Transparency... -> "Convert all text to outline"". Then, select that path and use the "Type along path" tool.
However, when I use that process, the resulting path is a compound path that therefore the Type Along Path tool doesn't work. Any pointers on how to achieve this? The image below I just used the pencil to trace the letters (quick and dirty) but the result is choppy, etc.

I have a figure as below:
You can see that the red circles intersect the blue one twice each. One of these intersects (the lower one) should be below the blue circle while the other should be above the blue circle. How can I make this happen? Can I use the shape builder tool somehow?

I am using the attribute to define hot spots on an image map. When I save the file for web, the alt value is empty and there is no easy way to identify which area is ahich in the html code.
How can I enter a value for alt in Illustrator?

How to protect some area in the Illustrator from changes? Like Photoshop does.
What I mean is: In the Photoshop I can select some area with Selection tool, let's say a rectangle. Then I can edit that area without a risk to harm any pixels outside it. I can apply any filter to it (blur, etc.), I can fill it with some colour or pattern. And the area outside the selection will be unchanged.
I can not find any way in the Illustrator to do the same or even a similar thing! I can isolate some object or group. but I can not isolate an area/region.

Is there a way in Illustrator CS6 to scale text inside a text box so that the text and box scale together proportionately? Not using the scale tool where you have to enter percentages, but using a keystroke. In Quark, you can do this by holding down Command + Shift and dragging the box. This will make the text and box bigger keeping the same dimensions. It's a very quick and easy way of changing the size of your text.

Illustrator: For some reason it's not possible to alter a text area with the Direct Tool once I've drawn it, I can only move the entire object. Same goes for objcts. All corner points stay marked, no matter what I do. I've been working with Illustrator for years, I can't find the mistake, I've checked all the settings.
