Illustrator :: Reduce Anchors Points In Segment Path Without Altering The Path?
Aug 31, 2013
In illustrator, is there a way to reduce anchors points in a segment path without altering the path?
Is there a better and more efficient way to reduce anchors points than using the pen-minus tool?

Level: Newbie OS: Windows 7 64bit Ia: Cs6
in short ...
I have made two objects, a vertical elongated ellipse with a circle placed on top that covers a bit of the ellipse and then i made a mask via Ctrl + 7
afterward I want to select the path of the circle and then use the Offset path twice to create two new paths but i want to Delete the first/original path.
however, no matter what i try i cannot seem to Delete the original path. ????
i have searched the manual, FAQ's and even used Google to try and find an answer.
I don't know if i am not asking the right question(s) or what but it seems as though a path cannot be deleted.
after doing ... say ... selecting the path in the layers panel and then clicking the trash can icon at the bottom of the layers palette the Edit menu will indeed say that the path has been deleted ... but ... when i hover over the area ~ the path is STILL there!!??
paths cannot be deleted? i would think if they could be that the manual would have some sort of info.
i find things like ... how to delete part of a path, how to delete anchors ... i mean everything but what i need to know.

I'm working on a logo and am having trouble erasing part of the path of a circle.
Here's what I did: I first made an elipse, then cut out a piece of it with scissors so that it looks more like a "C". Then I used the pen tool to draw an upside-down "v" intersecting with the circle. I am trying to erase a little bit of the top of the circle, to make it line up with the vertical line of the "v", but every time I try to use the eraser, it ends up drawing a line that connects the two end anchor points of the shape I just created.

I have created a path with multiple strokes, which differ in weight and color. I can save that as a profile but it's really tedious if I want to alter the different colors and stroke weights.
I can't seem to do record an action which will automatically alter those parameters (f.ex. raise each strokeweight by 10pt.). All I get is just an action that will recreate the altered state during recording (f.ex. stroke weights 20, 10 >--Action--> 15, 5). I cannot start the action and raise or lower my stroke weights at once based on the current parameters.

I used to select segments of the path with precize clicks.
Trial of new IllustratorCC reshapes my paths instead of just selecting it!
I haven't found any preferences to disable it (and I don't want to, because I have VectorScribe installed).

or is there a way of locking the angle of the bezier handles, when adjusting curves with direct selection tool?
Before the recent update, you could use the direct selection tool to select a curved path between two anchor points, and drag in either direction to tighten or relax the curve with the handles sticking to their current angles, the handles would just extend or shorten depending on the direction you dragged the path. It would only effect the curve selected, and would not effect the handles on the other side of the anchor point.
Since the update when using the direct selection tool to adjust curves the handles rotate, and can also effect the handle on the other side of the anchor point, if the handles/anchor point is set to smooth. Or if the handle/anchor point is set to be a corner it can create or leave sharp corners.

Prior to Photoshop CS6, a curve on a path could be moved using the Direct Selection Tool without altering the path beyond the two enclosing points. If you manipulated the curve, only the inside handles of the two points (that create the curve) would change - and only in length - as shown below:
Unfortunately, in Photoshop CS6, if you manipulate the path curve with the Direct Selection Tool, the handles both sides of the points move freely - affecting the path beyond those points:
- is there a way to revert to the prior behaviour? The Photoshop CS6 behaviour may seem more intuitive (or something), but it's less precise and alter parts of the path that are fine already.

I'm used to working with the pen tool in Adobe Photoshop, so Illustrator is just different enough to be problematic, since my automatic keyboard shortcut uses don't quite work. My biggest problem when drawing paths in Illustrator is that I can't figure out how to move individual anchor points without moving the entire connected path. I'm not using the direct selection right, or I don't have the rest of the path deselected properly, or something? How to move only individual anchor points in a path. (I am very tired of trying to move anchor points and ending up scooting the entire path along with it.)
General Information:
Windows Vista (relevant only for keyboard shortcuts, I suppose)
Illustrator CS2

In CS5, and in various documentation it doesn't appear possible to be a way to move multiple anchor points (as it is, in Photoshop). If this is the case... are you kidding me? Even Photoshop can do this.
Quite frankly, on my return to Illustrator, it's, as expected, Adobe has pulled a fast one with their suite of software. What was broken years ago is still broken today.
Photoshop needs the ability to add gradients to shapes, path brushing, symbols, ie the functionality of Illustrator needs to be placed into Photoshop.

i'm trying to build an easy way to create something like the following network graphic in Illustrator:
I basically want to create a brush or some other automatic method for adding a specific shape (in this case a circle) at every point a long a path. It would be nice if I could easily move around points on a path without have to move all of the circles independently.
I tried creating a pattern brush where the circles were the corner elements but depending on the angle of the corner the shape would get distorted.

I have some negative space I created(black area, see first image) that I want to fill with type, not just a simple fill.
Basically I want to create the negative space from a bunch of small minus signs(-) that need to line up as they go across. If I type on each path one at a time as the text doesn't line up that way. This needs to be one continuous path. (see second image)
Unfortunately if I add them together, it creates a compound path, which you cannot type on, unless I am mistaken? So I need them to be a path, not a compound object.

I'm currently having troubles from having too many anchor points after "image trace" or "offset path tool".
1. I would like to know if there's a way of deleting useless points AT ONCE. (ex. multiple anchor points on a stait line, or duplicated points at one anchor point)
- I've tried "Simplify" but it changed the picture too much.
- I've tried "Remove redundant points" when using "image trace" but it came out as below:
2. Sometimes pathfinder seems to make duplicated paths. Is there any way of knowing that there are duplicated paths OR eraseing duplicated paths at ONCE?

Is there a way to remove redundant points whilst maintaining the exact shape of the path?
After using Pathfinder or Expand there are often many redundant points which can't be removed using Simplify or Unite.
The VectorScribe plugin has a Smart Remove Points feature which is exactly what I want. I'm presuming the only way I can get that feature is to buy the plugin.
A simple example is shown below: The path is part of an exact circle and I need to remove one of the anchors.

I've tried every permutation of copy and paste; I renamed the path to path. It looks like a path when I add stroke, but it does not behave like one. I can't cut it or join it to any other path. It remembers it's text path status. I'm running OS X 10.7.5.

I accidentally converted a path to a text path. I searched the forum for how to convert it back to a regular path. The answer I found said to select the path and hit Command+C+F. This gives me another text path! I now have at least 6 copies of the path in my files but they are ALL text paths and none are visible with a stroke.

I've got two paths. They don't intersect, exactly, a straight path ends at a curved path, but I need the end of the straight path to be curved, to make it look like the two meet perfectly. The two gray paths (a single path, then path->offset for the second) are the outside of a shield shape. The two black lines (paths) just surround text, but currently they overlap the gray paths.

I need to create a 3D model of a segment of a jogging path/trail that has a drainage feature called a knick. I pasted a freehand drawing of what a knick looks like below this post. It's a semi-circular area that slopes to one side at a small angle on a trail that is otherwise flat. I need a model of a trail segment with two of these sloping indentations that is just a smooth, gray object- nothing fancy. I managed to create a simple 3D model for a second trail design that has a slope to one side throughout the trail- made a box with a tapered edge and rendered it gray.
Since to my eye a knick looks like a lemon wedge indented into the face of a box- that's what I've been working towards. Made a box, made a cylinder, moved the cylinder so half of its base sits on top of the box face on which I want the indentation, and then used pushpull and subtract to take out a shallow semi-circular cut off the top of the box (did two of these about 20 units apart on the same face).
Here is where I ran into my own limitations. I don't know how to taper the semicircular cut so that it actually slopes off the face to the edge and doesn't look like a clean cut depression. I need it to slope to the edge at a 2% angle. I've tried tapering many times, but I don't think I completely understand the concept of the tapering axis (or rather I know that I completely misunderstand it) because all I end up doing is tapering the various faces of the box and the knick cut stays the same. I also tried out all the tools on the ribbon that look like they can be used for filling in or smoothing edges, but without any luck. Or should I be approaching the process of making the knick from a completely different set of commands?

I created text on a curved path using the pen tool and the the type on a path tool. However, there are portions of the text that I want to taper. For example, my text begins horizontally, continues to the right, and gradually curves downward. As the text curves downward I would like it to taper smoothly into a narrower and narrower text.

I'm trying to create an effect of small text following the outline of very large bold block text (see picture). The idea I had was to first create the 'ME' in very large font as text. Then convert that text to an object / path using "Object -> Flatten Transparency... -> "Convert all text to outline"". Then, select that path and use the "Type along path" tool.
However, when I use that process, the resulting path is a compound path that therefore the Type Along Path tool doesn't work. Any pointers on how to achieve this? The image below I just used the pencil to trace the letters (quick and dirty) but the result is choppy, etc.
