Illustrator :: How To Create A Realistic Rock With Depth
Mar 13, 2013
I am working on a private cartoon project, designing the backgrounds. One of the scences is located in the desert. I really want to create a realistic stone, with depth (like you would in Photoshop with the smudge tool) but I dont really know how. I tried the following things so far:
1) Drawing the shadows ect by hand with the pentool (didnt bring me the results i wanted)
2) Trying to add a texture (same problem^^)
3) Trying the gradient mesh tool (It is just not doing what I want)
Any good way to create good looking cartoon rocks?

how to create "Depth of field" in photographs but the effect is not really what I want.In all of the tutorials they create two layer and blur one of them, then apply a mask and gradient it to create the effect of dof. This is not what I wan't because it does't make the scene gradually more blurry, it only creates an extremely blurry layer and applies it gradually.
So what I'm looking for is a filter or plugin that gradually increases the strength of a blur using a mask.

This comes from the game "Thief 2". How they did with that "creased" technique? I mean, the fabric over the booth has some realistic folds, especially at the bottom; how they manage to make that? Did they scan a fabric sample or there's a trick with Photoshop to make those folds credible like that?

I have a bunch of shots in which I have to place layers of smoke in z-depth. I found out that there is a plugin system for Nuke called YUVSOFT which does this but the company will not release their plugins for small market jobs. The depth maps don't have to be anything special or perfect. I just don't want to have to spend days and days rotoing out a 30 or 40 layers per shot with Mocha. Will the Motion Analysis node create the vectors to assist in depth map creation?

I'm having a problem with Fcheck that no one seems to be able to solve - every time I import a large image it resizes it automatically to a fraction of its size. Notice in the image attached below that my image is 10000 x 10000 pixels but it imports and resizes to 25% of this original size.
According to the Autodesk Maya Online Help there is a command that will "Display images in full resolution preventing automatic rescaling of large images." ...that command is -F
My question to you is how and where do I enter that command? I'm using maya 2011 on Mac
Basically I just need to create a large scale depth map image...

Was wondering if there are some ways in converting a highly realistic rendering of an object generated in a 3D program into a more illustrative, simplified, alittle less realistic version in Photoshop?
The object has plenty of silver reflections, HDRI environment map reflections, precise shadows and highlights, etc. I just want to make it look more generic and not as polished I guess.
Are there filters or plugins that will do this in a plug in play method or is it more prodedural and manual?

I'm working on an illustration of headphones and I need to make it look as thought the wire coming out of the headphones is sitting on a table and the light source is above and casting the shadow slightly to the left.I did the below test but it looks more like you are looking at the wire from an x/y axis.

So I thought of a cool way to promote myself. By taking a texture, a rock, road, dirt, something (probably dark and black in tones) and somehow 'chisel' my logo into it. The logo could be 3d, and maybe look as if it slammed into the ground/dirt/metal/rock, etc...
Anyone happen to know of a tutorial where I could learn some techniques?

I need to determine a limit of rock cut for a land development project. I have created surfaces for my Existing Grade and Top of Rock. Is there any way to determine the limit of rock cut within 25 ft of the existing ground, the volume of rock cut, and show the limit of rock cut on my plan view?
I could drop the Existing Grade elevations by 25 feet, but then how would I create a separate Surface from the intersection of the lowered Existing Grade surface and the Top of Rock Surface?

Photoshop seems to be converting pictures that I open to 8-bit from 24-bit: before the problem I think it was converting to 16-bit because Photoshop doesnt seem to support 24-bit but I cant remember.
I've been using Photoshop CS4 for about 4-5 weeks now without any problems and this just seems to have come out nowhere. The problem doesn't seem to be related to Camera Raw at all because I don't use it to import my pictures, so the "Workflow Options" don't seem to have any effect on the converting. I've also tried to delete the preferences file and that doesn't help either.

A friend of mine asked me if a could find a quality pic (intenet) of some gold bars. I searched iStockPhoto and downloaded one .eps file whitch I wasn't too happy with. Then I searched Google (large images) without a result. In desperation I searched Microsoft Office Clipart and found something (.jpg) I might be able to improve. I've used PS7 for some time but with this 8 bit image I feel "blocked" on where to start making the image looking more natural colourwise. Could someone please put me on the right track? Thank you. (I hope I've got the linking to the img. OK)

Any clear, full tutorial of a Z-Depth pass. The idea is to have that Pass that shows the close objects white, and gradually goes to black as they are more distant.
Also, how do I apply this in Photoshop, once i have the image?

I'm want to add depth to my image. I've attached an image with the effect I'm looking for. Basically, it just makes the shape pop out just a little. I see they've did a fade around the edges, so I'm wondering what the easiest way to do this is. I achieved the same type of effect using the blend tool, fading the edges to black, but it's rather tedious and didn't look as good.
