Illustrator :: Drawing Smooth Curves With Pen Tool
Mar 4, 2013
Having just entered the world of illustrator (cs6) I'm finding trying to get smooth curves to do what you want is a highly confusing operation.Being a fairly competant user of Photoshop the same task can be acheived relatively easily by way drawing paths with the pen tool and simply adding anchor points to drag out the desired shape.This buisness of dragging out handles in order to create curves in illustrator is crazy, I just can't seem to get the curves to behave how I want them to, I've watched probably 20 tutorials on this now and all demonstrate the same technique for creating curves, is there a more straight forward, simple way to achieve precise smooth curves similar to PS?

Am I the only one who has edited a stroke with the stroke width tool, then outlined the stroke only to find a countless number of points and noticeably unsmooth edges? Is there a setting or certain way to ensure that the stroke width tool won't corrupt the smoothness of my shapes? The stroke width tool is the most handy new feature I can imagine, but this problem makes it almost entirely useless, unless designing something where precision and smoothness are not important.

For a school project I was to render an everyday object and I chose a pepper. I created the pepper with the mesh tool and also rendered it with the gradient mesh, now my instructor says that I need to have really smooth curves but I have way too many anchor points so I don't know how to fix the curves.

I have a piece of artwork with loads of curves and I'd like to smooth out a few areas that appear a little "wobbly". Is there an easy way to do this in Illustrator CS6 (other than adjusting with handles)?

When I use the blend tool for a smooth blend, the blends comes out jagged and horrible, as if it is doing a step blend rather than a smooth blend. I have used the tool before by either using the shortcut (Alt+Ctrl+B) or using it via the Object>Blend pathway and it worked out fine, but now Illustrator doesn't want to create a smooth blend.
What I'm trying to say is; is there an option that is causing this to happen that I may have accidently turned on, or has my copy of Illustrator gone into stupidity mode and I need to reinstall it?
I've attached pictures of what I mean with the settings I'm using and outputs. I hope your collective minds can smack this one in the face. I'm sure I'm doing something ridiculously simple to cause this.
I'm using CS5 Illustrator and my relevant PC hardware is listed below. - Intel i5-2500 3.30Ghz
- nVidia GeForce GTX 560

I'm using the Pencil Tool to draw shapes (not good enough for the Pen Tool yet) and some of my paths are not as smooth as I'd like, so I go over them with the Smooth Tool, though it seems like it either smooths the path a little bit or completely changes its shape.

In Illustrator CS6 and CC, when the stroke width tool is used on a curve, the curve is actually made up of a series of straight lines instead of smooth vector curves:
whereas in CS5 it looks perfect.These images may be too small to see the details, but the difference is there. Is there a workaround for this? Or is it recognized as a bug?

Does it exist? If not, why not? I discovered it in SAI and it's amazing how easily one could draw smooth curves with the brush/pencil without a need to mess with vectors but SAI is seriously lacking in many basic things that Paint.net has (i couldn't even change the size of a cut/pasted object). It would be perfect if Paint.net had it.

I'm using Illustrator CC (on a Win7 Pro machine) at a beginner level, probably halfway to intermediate. I'm trying to learn how to blend colors together for highlights of various types (skin tones, clothing, light on objects, etc.) so that when I'm making a graphic for a project I'll have a decent idea of which tool/technique is best for the specific effect I need.
I'm trying to use the Smooth Color option in the blend tool. Late yesterday afternoon I recall creating two ellipses (one of which was a solid fill and one of which was a gradient going from black to transparent) and getting a smooth color transition between the two. It was a much harsher effect than I was looking for so I didn't keep it. This morning, while trying to replicate the same thing, I seem to be unable to use smooth color between two objects if one or more of them has a gradient applied. I only get what you see below, which is a step between the two objects.
I've done searches and found multiple references to blending gradients in this way and have followed those instructions (create the shapes, fill with the gradients, then either click on the Blend tool and click on the center of each shape, or click on Object -> Blend -> Make) but I can't seem to get a Smooth Color blend if either object has a gradient applied. Am I missing an important step somewhere? I'm 95% sure I accomplished it yesterday and nothing has been changed since then.

So I downloaded Ai cs2 the other day. Whenever I come to drawing polygons with the pen tool I set the fill to a colour and the stroke to none(/) just so i can produce block colour shapes without an outline. However When ive come to do it on cs2 the pen tool only lets me draw thin black lines.

how to make curves with a set pixel width. It's hard to explain my dillema with words beyond that... Most of my question is detailed in the picture I've enclosed... (I needed a few visual aids to get my point across, lol)... I'm going to post again in this thread with another picture to help further explain, so check that out if this one doesn't cut it for ya.

In the past I have traced the outline of an image using the pen tool by placing as many points along the contour or outline as possible. Once I closed the path the appearance was not perfectly smooth.
I remember using a tool after that to smooth the path that would eliminate any uneven or jagged edges and make the curves really smooth. How to do this in CS6?

I have a question about the pen tool in Photoshop, I would like to make drawings as a simple colored dividing curves I found no simple way to achieve this, first found solution is to trace with Tool pen the desired shape (open form), then using the Layout panel, apply a color on edge, the problem with this method is that if you change the shape of the trace thereafter, the initial color persists mena sdoesn't move withe resized trace and it's embarrassing. the second found solution is to use a vector layer, but the problem is that traces are always closed(means closed shaps only) and the colored outline is applied on all around the shape , it works well with the closed form but not with the simple forms.
how to draw a single line or an open colored curve with photoshop.

When I take the Type tool and draw a text box it simply draws a box with no fill or stroke and I can't type in it. When I simply click with the Type tool, a one-pixel dot appears and blinks like a input cursor, and when I type it blinks like it should be moving but it's not. I can't write any text whatsoever...

In a drawing I'm looking for components that have a certain iProperty. If they have the iProperty, I want to turn every occurrence of that item red.
I can get the occurrences fine, but I'm unable to properly get the drawing curves so I can turn them red. I'm using code from this post on ModTheMachine: [URL]........
Here's my
private static void ProcessAssemblyColor(DrawingDocument aDoc, ComponentOccurrences occurrences){ foreach (ComponentOccurrence occ in occurrences) { if (occ.DefinitionDocumentType == DocumentTypeEnum.kPartDocumentObject) { TransientObjects transObjects = StandardAddInServer._mInventorApplication.TransientObjects; LayersEnumerator layers = aDoc.StylesManager.Layers; Layer colorLayer = layers[1]; colorLayer.Color = transObjects.CreateColor(255, 0, 0); //red [code]........
I've seen some things say I need to use an out object to use DrawingCurves. If that's true, I'm not sure what to put for the first variable.
object outObject;DrawingCurvesEnumerator drawingCurves = drawView.DrawingCurves[occ.CreateGeometryProxy(whatgoeshere?, out outObject)];

after using the crop tool in Photoshop CS6, the Presets and RGB channels options are greyed out on the curves adjustment layer, IF that layer's Properties are displaying at the time. I find I can get the options back if I open and close Curves Display Options.
I am running Windows 7 x64, AMD Radeon HD 5800 with latest drivers (same problem with older drivers).

I have a drawing that was made using a CMM arm, so the drawing consists of thousands of tiny lines which make up the perimeter of the part. I'm looking to import this dwg file into Inventor in order to make a sheet metal part and eventually a flat layout of it.
The main thing I'm looking to do is "smooth" out the profile, hopefully without having to redraw the part with the dwg drawing as a template. Is there anyway to acomplish what I'm looking to do? I've attached a sample of the dwg.

use of 'quality' and 'weight' under 'smooth stroke' in say dodge/burn tool. This option is available under some other tools too but I am not able to find the effect of these options even after scouring the net and could not find any difference after changing the default values.
Version GIMP 2.8.X from software centre of Ubuntu 13.04; no modifications, no extras.
