Illustrator :: CS5 - Dimensions Of New Objects Are Not Precise
Jan 19, 2014
I am using Illustrator CS5 on a MacBook Pro running 10.9.1. When I make new objects their dimensions are not precise, although I am using the application bar to spec the sizes. When I use the built-in calculator function to resize the objects, the errors grow.
For example: rectangle, 7" x 10", intended size. RESULT: 7.0124" x 10.1251". This rectangle has no fill, its rule is 1'.
When I use the calculator to make it 1/9 of the intended size, the result I get should be 0.7778" x 1.111". Instead, the result is 0.0.7653 in x 1.108 in.

I'm trying to export images with lightroom but i need to have exact final dimension(s). I mean, may be I need *exactly* 1920x1080 or 1920x1200 pixel final jpg dimensions, so i need a way for having automatic black borders added to the image if it does not match proportions - as you probably have understood images have to be shown on different screen/monitors and I have troubles with automatic zooming fitting and proportions. ?
I can't do photo by photo due to the fact i have hundred(s) of images to export.

When we import something from illustrator or indesign as a smart object, for some reason the objects width and height will not keep their dimensions in proportion.
When the asset is first imported as a smart object it says the width and height are exactly 100%. However after that if you try to change the dimensions they will be out of proportion, usually the width will be 100% but the height will be out by about 1% to begin with. When you scale up, the percentages fall further and further apart. See image attached.
This has become a real problem for our workflow as the creative director insists we must correct every layer which has this issue by typing in the sizes manually, but then this doesnt always fix the problem either depending on which version of photoshop you are using.

how do you enter a precise width to a paragraph without deforming it... if you rezise manualy it doesnt strech, but if you have for example a 180px width paragraph and enter 30px in transform box or properties bar it gets stretched.
I have some text boxes and need all to be same exact widths.

I have made a few cabinets (in 3d) on Autocad, but I was just wondering if there is a function that can tell you how large each of the pieces are in each direction (Have originally drawn in 2d and then extruded). Either each piece individually or a group summary.
Even if I go to the properties of each piece, it only gives me the extruded height (i.e. only a value in the Z-direction, gives 0 in the X and Y).
Is there any way to do this apart from the normal linear dimension function?

I have this issue where I have stone right below some framing and other objects. I use a hatch to fill in the square of stone. When I use the hatch, I send it to the back of the drawing order, but it is right below a bunch of my dimensions.
These dimensions become hard to see. I could have sworn that I once saw my hatches leave some extra room around the dimensions. Is there a way to make them easier to see? I guess the ugly solution I have right now is to put small boxes around anything within the hatch to leave some room.

In the old versions of TDX4 and TDX5 (?) it was possible to have the dimensions within the object group in which the measured object was part. In TDX5 SP1 it seems impossible to move dimensions into any group. They remain a list apart within the layer in which the measured objects are part.
Is this correct and is this an intentional "correction"? If so, I strongly propose to make it possible again to keep the dimensions together with the measured object in whatever group that measured object is in. When you have hundreds of objects within a layer, it really is a unmanageable nuisance that the dimensions are all at the top level of a layer.
I found another (related?) problem when applying dimensions on groups of objects. As soon as you have attached a dimension to one or more objects in a group (the dimension itself being outside the group at the top level of a layer), you can only select the group as a whole at the top level. You cannot select objects within the group. Also this problem was not in X4. I don't know whether this problem is typically X5 SP1, as I did not test it in the original X5. Also this is a real nuisance wasting a lot of time, because you have to delete all dimensions when you want to change something in a group.
This all I have also reported directly to Corel. I found a work around to both problems:
1. Ungroup the group and any subgroups.
2. Apply the dimension lines
3. Regroup again also including the dimension lines
Now you can access the dimension lines and all separate objects in the group.

I need to find a way to add "perspective" to grouped objects that include a bitmap and other drawn objects. I can convert everything to a bitmap in needed. What I need this for is I engrave this grouped artwork onto drinking glasses and I have to adjust the artwork for the differences in the diameter of the glass. I need to be able to set the width of the top of the artwork with a numeric value and the bottom with a different numeric value.
An example of the problem with the engraving is that if I wanted to engrave a one inch square half way down the glass I would have to make the top of the square 1.1 inches wide and the bottom of the square 1.2 inches (the math is not right with this example) so a trapezoid turns into a square once engrave on the tapered glass.
The image below shows a sample of the artwork I need to engrave. The right side image is an exaggerated example of what the artwork would need to look like to work right once engraved. I could only adjust the black ring but not the text or image in the center. The third image is to show a trapezoid.

have some questions about annotative objects.
The first, if i have created many annotative dimensions and texts and with the time many scales get attached to these objects during editing ( the scales which i don't use on my layouts anymore but have used on these objects ones) How can I quickly and efficiently delete all the scales that are not in use on my layouts in my viewports for all the annotative objects?
the second question is how can I create annotative tags( dynamic blocks that can be scaled like annotative texts)?

How does one remedy this Adobe error message? "Can't scale the objects. The requested transformation would make some objects too small to use." This one always gets me. I'll spend more time trying to find the object in question. This has happened in almost al versions, but this time it's CS5.

There are 3 elements there. the top of the clap board was placed before i started tryinbg to create the slanted dashes that are on the average clapboards. The white dash was skewed using Object > Transform > Shear. Then i attempted to rotate it to fit.
I need 4 of these skwed white squares / trapezoids on the top along with 4 to match on the top of the larger potion of the clapboard. I do not want to eye it as it will be a part of a logo.
What would be the best method to use?Is there a way to draw the 4 rectangles on top of a perfectly horizontal long black rectangle and skew the white dashes at the same time?Is there a way to skew based on the dimensions of the longer black rectangle?

I cannot stand the CapsLock key. In fact, I modified my registry to remap the caps lock key to ALT-NumLock or something. But every time I use Photoshop, I have to be able to toggle the capslock key to enable disable precise cursors. So, then, I switch back to my primary app (InDesign, Illustrator, Dream weaver, anything ) and I type about 30 words before I realize I still had the CAPS Lock on.
there is a way to remap the precise cursor toggle to another key.

I've seen plenty of tutorials on the use of the Image > Adjustments > Replace Color... tool and in all of these tutorials, they will simply slide the hue slider to a color they wish to change to. I know that in the replacement section, a user can click the color box and choose a color from the swatches, even copy and pasting a specific hex code value.
This is great for web dev work where I need a precise hex color for an image. Problem is, this doesn't work. It seems to blend the new color with the existing one. What I find myself doing is more of an iterative process then: I'll use the eye-dropper tool on this blended color, then repeat the Replace Color steps again and again until I get something close to my intended new color.

I upgraded my Paint Shop Pro from X2 to X4 recently and now I find that the precise cursors seem to be broken.
The crazy thing is that it has broken X2 as well so I'm a bit stuck. I know that it used to work because I use PSP for digitizing vector curves and have existing drawings where the vector node is not at the center of the pixel grid.

I have a little project in mind (I don't really want to say what it is) that requires very neat linework. I have to say that in terms of linework I am superb with straights. I can even do parallel straights!
What I really need though are smooth 90 degree bends and not just for one line, multiple parallel lines.
What is the secret of getting perfect, precise bends? I can do bends but I fiddle for ages to get them to look right. What really interests me is to take a series of parallel lines and bend them as one.

Is there a way to do a precise crop in any units that avoids interpolation. As far as I know entering a size in the input boxes, does not give a crop box of that size, as it does in the selection tool. The only accurate way that I can think of is to use guides to mark the crop and then use the crop tool. A bit primitive is it not?
Also can the guides be set by an input box? It is very difficult to pull them to the correct position, using the info box. I can only set 1000 and 4000, by zooming to 100% and then scrolling, otherwise the info box is too coarse. I suppose someone will say that CS6 addresses this!
