Illustrator :: Best Way To Vectorized B&W Image?
Feb 12, 2013
which do you think is the best way to vectorized a black and white image? (not grayscale, just two colors).Because I've tryed a lot of different ways to do it but nothing gives me the results I want. I am sure there should be another way than manualy tracing it because its just black and white.I want to get the exact same look but vectorized, I uploaded a picture to show more exactly what I'm trying to do.

I am getting an error message while trying to use the Path/Join function in Ai CC6. While working on a new layer I try to Path/Join the vectorized image and the message states that "The selected objects cannot be joined as they are invalid objects." What am I doing wrong?

When I expand a logo with very thin font in illustrator with Expand Stroke & Fill selected, the text which is now vectorized seems to have more weight compared to the original text.
How can I limit this difference?

When a user rasterizes a color image in Illustrator and then copies it into Excel and saves the file the image turns black and white. I uninstalled and reinstalled the whole suite already, deleted the perference files that i could find. and also look at the rasterizing settings they are the same as mine and another user. Any other things I can try? Where are the default rasterize settings stored at?

So I'm able to use the dashed stroke normally if I create my own lines or shapes, but I'm using an image that I have image traced, expanded, and ungrouped, and I'm able to change the weight of the stroke and the brush but not apply a dashed stroke or a different brush profile, but I'm more concerned with the stroke. I haven't forgotten the gap.. What's up? Does it just not work on image traced stuff?

I created a ribbon using the extrude and bevel effect and then mapping it with a custom symbol. I copied the image and then tried to get a matching image on the flipside to mirror it but cannot seem to figure it out. Is there a way to somehow flip the orientation of the image? I tried using transform and then reflect and it does not do anything. I tried to do it manually in mapping and flipping the box upside down and in reverse but it just doesn't seem result in the a reflective image. Attached are the two images I am trying to get to reflect each other.

Just for clarification, are there any drawbacks to just dragging an image from my desktop onto an artboard instead of placing it? The image will not be autotraced, and will become part of a layout in my AI file.

I'm just now getting into using illustrator (currently on trial for illustrator cc) and I've taken a couple of my illustrations and attempted to use the image trace. The only way I can seem to get the image trace to actually produce an accurate trace is if I use a very large file size. So I take my scanned image (600 dpi 2000x 1891) and load it into illustrator, and here's where the problem comes in. Illustrator will not show my entire image on the screen. I zoom out as far as I can go and it's still cutting off the bottom and top of the image. When I try to scale the image it won't let me scale it down to even 90%.
So my question, is there anyway I can load my full size image into illustrator, image trace it, and then scale it down so I can see the whole image on my screen? It's very hard to paint and work around the image when it's getting cut off.
The first picture is what the whole picture looks like, but it's such a small file size it's blurry and won't image trace correctly.
The 2nd image is what happens when I load my full image size in, I'm scrolled as high as the page will go and the top is still cut off.

I've made a template file which includes several linked files (logo's in different shapes).
I've made a map and within that map the template file (.pdf) and 3 linked logofiles (.eps files)
I thought when I copy all 4 in a new map (for a new customer) and changed the 3 linked logofiles and then opened the newly copied template file in Illustrator...
that the template file would include the new logo's. But the links still point to the origial 3 logo files.
Is there a way to link the files within the map where the template file is??

I am using the attribute to define hot spots on an image map. When I save the file for web, the alt value is empty and there is no easy way to identify which area is ahich in the html code.
How can I enter a value for alt in Illustrator?

I've always worked with Photoshop (CS3). However, I just upgarded to CS Cloud and want to learn how to work with SVG images.
Apparently, I can't open SVG images with Photoshop, so I open them in Illustrator and then export them in a format I can use on the web (usually .png or .jpg). I guess I should be able to publish images in the .svg format to the web, but I don't understand how to work with them yet.
Anyway, many of the SVG images I open in Illustrator are the size of the white rectangular area in the center of the workspace. If I save them as a .png, they're often 200-300 pixels wide, when I want them to be 500-600 pixels wide. So how do I enlarge them? I've typed "enlarge" and "resize" into search but haven't found anything useful.
Of course, I can enlarge the .png's, but they often become distorted. As I understand it, SVG files don't get distorted when they're enlarged, right?
Also, what's the best way to select a certain portion of an image and enlarge it?
On a sidenote, I tried exporting one SVG image as a TIFF, and it took forever to process, eventually crashing my computer.

how to put a border around a black and white image imported into Illustrator CS2 (for PC). The Tiff images are imported from Photoshop I've been reading some of the previous postings on this subject, but still can't seem to figure it out. I would like the border to just outline the image. Nothing fancy. I would like it to essentially look like what it would if I were to import an image into Powerpoint and just bound it by a box.

I'm having trouble getting an image successfully into my vinyl cutting program. I open a black and white image into illustrator, I trace it, I paint a few more black lines that I need and then save it into svg or pdf. Once I import the image into my software it show all the brush strokes that I painted making it impossible to cut. Is there a way to make the image in illustrator all one image once painting it and making it decal cuttable?

In all my research of the new CC features in Illustrator I came across a video that was explaining you can now add a stroke on a placed image. My memory thinks it was a Deke McClellan video but i'm getting too old to rely on my memory being correct and I can't seem to find the video again.
I tried adding a stroke but nothing happeneds.. I still have to mask first then add a stroke.

I have a logo someone else created. When I bring it in to Illustrator (CC) parts of it are red. And inside the red there are white parts. I want the white parts gone... so that the background will show through (i.e., not the red). I have done this in the past by using "Minus Front" in the pathfinder. But it's not working. This is something I converted from a PNG.

So, I'm developing a game currently and have been drawing some character portraits (busts if you will) in Illustrator CC (v17.0.0 32-bit). After finishing each portrait, I need to export them into a .png file that I can then use with MSPaint.
My troubles are that I always run into one or more of the following problems each time I export an image:
If I save the image at 72ppi, the exported images are the correct size but, they have jagged edges, which just aren't acceptable for my project. If I save the image at say 300ppi, the exported images are blown up and are too big but, they have smooth edges, which, while I want smooth edges, I cannot work with the increase size of the images.Sometimes exporting the images causes a new line around the smooth edges (I think I've heard this effect called a Halo or something along those lines), which is also unacceptable because I need a transparent background. Also, if I resize the blown up image manually, it causes develops the third problem.
What I'm after basically is to be able to export the image on my artboard into a .png file, have export at the same width and height it does when I export it at 72ppi, while keeping the edges smooth like they are when exporting it at 300ppi.
As a side note, I currently don't have a suscription/access to photoshop and don't have a way this month to gain access and though there are freeware programs that do a lot of what Photoshop is capable of, I can't seem to figure them out. I've mentioned this just in-case potential solutions require photoshop

Someone has sent me an Illustrator file and it has the embedded image I want to use. How do I extract it out of the AI file. I want to use the image in Photoshop or Flash and I am tired of using screen grab. I want the full resolution of the image in the AI file.
The image also has a clipping mask, is there a way of extracting the image as a clipped image because it has all that unwanted image I don't need to use.

i have a vector that i want to apply an image to. So i dropped the image into illustrator, and made a clipping mask, but if i go to save it, or print it, it tries to print space where the image is, even though it's only inside the vector outline. Kind of confusing with the wording, see pics, but I just want the vector to cut out of the image, and get rid of the rest of the image.
