GIMP :: Filling Line Drawing With Color - JPG File
Mar 16, 2011
New to GIMP and would like to add some color to a line drawing. I have a line drawing that I scanned into the computer as a JPG. I've imported that JPG into GIMP.
the line drawing has a dozen or so areas created by the intersecting lines. I would like to fill the various areas with different colors. How can I do that?
If I pour a color paint on the picture without doing anything, the entire page changes to the color poured. Not what I want to do. I want area A to be red, area B to be blue, and area C to be yellow.

I have a cartoon line drawing. The black outlines are anti aliased so the edges of the lines have different grades of gray pixels on them. When I use the fill tool, and adjust the fill with the opacity and tolerance sliders, (I think that's what they're called in GIMP), I still can't get what I want. Only some of the gray pixels are colored in. Others are canceled out. Completely covered by the color, erasing some of the line.
Or some pixels remain uncolored. Just gray instead of a combination of the gray AND the fill color. What I'm looking for is an effect that looks like I placed a colored gel shaped like the cartoon character over the drawing. All the different shades of gray pixels should still be seen. Even the ones that are lighter than the fill color. With a gel, those pixels would appear darker, even though they were lighter than the fill color without the gel over them. The darkness of the color PLUS the added darkness of even the lightest gray pixels should make all the pixels appear darker. And the line would appear complete. Not partially erased.
Is it at all possible to get this effect?

After filling the inside of a line drawing, (cartoon "shape"), I'm left with the checkerboard pattern that indicates transparency. I'd just like to get rid of that checkerboard pattern so I can view my drawing the way it really looks! Can this be done in GIMP?

I scan cartoons I've drawn so that I can colour them in Photoshop. However, when I click within an area I wanted coloured, I get a thin white line between the colour and the black outline. No matter what I do, I cannot get rid of this except to keep on clicking the colour until the line disappears. Is there a quick and more effective way of filling colour without this hassle?

I'm trying to change the color palette of a sprite's gif in GIMP, but I can't get the bucket tool to put the right color in to each layer.
Here's a screenshot of the gif opened up in GIMP with only the first frame visible.
Next, I selected one of the colors in the frame.
Then, I clicked on the new foreground color and set the blue and green sliders to 0.
Then, I selected the Select By Color tool, and selected the area with the old color.
Last, I used the Bucket Fill tool (making sure that FG color fill and Fill whole selection were chosen on the left) to add the new color, but I got a completely different color in its place.

How can I use the bucket-fill option to fill an area surrounded by a dottedline?
The dotted line is a path; so if I use a line for the dots, the bucket-fillworks.
But how can I step back after filling to change the path's line into dotsagain?

I have drawn a rocket and there's a white section in the flame that I'd prefer to be filled with Red. Orange and White don't make for a very convincing flame
How would I do this?

How do you draw a line within a shape? I know how to make a circle or rectangle (through the circle or rectangle select tool/stroke path) and how to draw straight lines. I want to take a box like this:
-----
1 1
1 1
1 1
-----
and add a line through the center like this:
-----
1 1
1-----1
1 1
-----
And of course I'd prefer the line be neat, from one end of the shape to the other, not just a sloppily drawn line.
Of course I can do this very slowly by drawing the line, zooming way in, and manually moving the line into place. But surely there's a better way!

I guess we're talking simple vector graphics--I'm working on a rivets layer and want to add a matrix of dotted lines to complement a fuselage. My challenge is that most of the lines should be slanted. I've been looking for some "line tool" that creates a straight line between two defined points. It seems, however, that Gimp has no vector tool. Maybe I can address this by drawing a right angled matrix and then use a perspective tool?

So I'm working on a drawing and my brushes are being glitchy
1. whenever i use the paintbrush the paint doesnt completely come on the board. like it kindof "skips" where it adds paint and where it doesnt.
2. I'm trying to add color to a lineart i'm making, and the color wont change. Like I'll try to change the color from black to orange. on the palet it says the color is orange but it still shows up as black (with a paintbrush or a pencil).

I'm trying to trace around an image to create a line drawing. The object I'm tracing has a lot of curves in it so using the Pencil Tool. Also, I've used the Paths Tool and then clicked "stroke path". That's all fine and well but it's taking FOREVER to trace the picture.
Since the image has a lot of curves is there a tool or gadget in Gimp that can provide a smooth curve, say, around a circle?

I have a foreground and background color selected. I want to draw a line with a gradient between the two colors. All I get is a line in the foreground color.
The help talks about a checkbox "use color from gradient" but I don't have that on my tool options. I can see the sample gradient displayed there though.

I'm a machine knitter. I'm converting images into 2,3 or 4-colors for knitting on my compuerized knitting machine. I need to have a separate "line" for each color of the image in order for my machine to knit with yarn of that color. If 4 colors, I must knit 4 times for each row, once with each color.
I'm doing pretty well with creating the needed image file of 2,3 or 4 colors, but have no clue how I might be able to create a master monster file where each horizontal "line" is essentially exploded into 4 lines, one for each color.

I use the vanilla app and do vanilla things. Lately I have been interested in using some turn of the century public domain line illustrations, but often they are found with yellow backgrounds from the old paper.
I can knock the blotchy yellow out with levels and such, but I think there is probably a way to remove it instead of washing it out. I see that there are a few plug ins out there that might do the job, but I don't know if they are updated to work with the newest program on a 64 bit Win 7 machine.
Bonus question: Since some of the drawings are not the best quality, so vectorizing them has potential. I have played around with the trace bitmap tool on Inkscape and it is cool, but is it the best way? Is there a way to clean up a raster image without manually doing cleanup, or a plug in that lets it scale up?

I would like to color animal lineart such as wolves and big cats. I know the easy way to make layers, but coloring it is so time consuming. I normally try to color inside the lines and whatnot, but that takes forever.. Is there a way I can color and not worry about going outside the lines?

How can I make an imported scan of a line drawing "transparent" and add color fills to various sections, using the freehand tool ? I have done this many times with an older version of CorelDraw, but in CorelDraw- x5 the
imported scan includes a white background (even when I select NO FILL), so that my freehand tool selections are either on top of, or hidden behind the white background.

I am working in Photoshop CS4...have been for years. All of a sudden, when I try to fill a closed path with a color, it fills the entire art board with color, except not inside the path. I have not selected "inverse" or anything....and it has never done this before....I can't figure out why it has started doing this, and I can't get it to stop. Most of the paths in my file, I have made in Illustrator and then pasted into Photoshop...they work normally....it is just the ones I actually draw in Photoshop that are doing this....one thing I have noticed is that in the paths palette, the paths I pasted in from Illustrator have a grey background.....while the paths I actually drew in Photoshop have a white background.

I tried to get into the IRC to ask this question but I kept getting a 404 message. My question is....is "filling with transparent" the same as "tinting"? (explanation: In the image editor that Photobucket used to have I could change the color of something in a picture without losing the original shading, etc. They no longer have that image editor so I am looking for an Open Source program that is easy to use and has that feature.)

I've heard that you can reduce file size using polyline instead of line while drawing (or vice versa... don't remember) is it true and what exactly should be used. I think, why we would need the line tool at all if polyline more convenient.
