GIMP :: Deselecting Part Of The Selection
Jan 26, 2014
I'm getting the hang of tool "o" & tool "shift o". After I make this selection, is there a way to deselect only part of it?
Especially when the part is not connected to the rest of the selection.

Often I will have a complicated path that took a long time to make, only to lose it by selecting another tool. How can I restore a path after this happens? The undo function does not restore paths.
Also, is there a way so transform (scale, rotate, etc) a path? I know I could turn it onto a selection first, but I usually need to edit the path itself afterwards.

Right after one makes a selection, say by using the Rectangle SelectTool, is presented with handles that allow altering the selection.
If one then selects another tool without deselecting is being deprivedof these handles while the selection remains active thus rendering himunable to alter the selection in that fashion.
Thus forming my question: is there a way to make these handles to(re-)appear on a non-freshly created selection?

I know how to blend selection edges of a selection in Gimp 2.8.2, but if I have only one side of a selection that needs blending, what should I do?
Lets say that I have a grey box on a black background and only want to blend the left vertical edge into the background.

Is there a way to sort of edit not the whole selection but only a part of it, so to select part of a selection and edit it?
For instance I want to make an A-form as a selection and first made the left leg but not want to make the right leg apart from the left and fix them together later. However, if I want to change the size of the right leg PS takes the left leg as well so it changes the whole selection.

What I exactly mean is I have a part like a cylinder with different small things in it, like below on the picture and I want to cut out a particular selection, a particular piece, so I can do dimensions of it on the side because obviously it would be too small to do it on the main part. So, where is the proper and simple way of doing it. The only way I can think of, is to it create a circle and use a trim feature, but it would take too long.

Is there any way in an Inventor Presentation file to select all identical parts of an assembly other than the obvious and grueling process of manualing selecting each part in the model navigation panel?
I am looking for a more effective way to color code for a set of assemblies that I have to produce. If the ability to use a mass selection process for individual parts exists it could save me a tremendous amount of time and energy.

We have recently migrated our production work to Autodesk Inventor. We have a condition or rather a requirement to constantly keep a check on the iProperties of a part while in an Assembly file.
So I thought the best way to do so is to have a form which float's in one of the corners of the screen and updates the fields based on the item selected. Is this possible?
We mostly have parts one level below the assembly, occasionally we have them as a sub-assembly.

I downloaded the free CS2 version from the Adobe website.
I am trying to create a watermark for my images.
I have followed several tutorials to a point where I am ready to crop my watermark and set as a defined brush.
I select the crop tool, and go to select the text and the text disappears. If I go ahead and retry to select an area...then the crop tool actually works, but my text is gone.
The other thing is, my text is in what I would describe as a "free selection lasso" meaning the text isnt in bold, but rather has a floating edge around it.

I am trying to make an animation for a school project. It is a stickman animation, and I want to move a characters legs without deselecting him. However, I also want to save the image at the same time(to put in Movie Maker). Is there a plugin for this? Or do I have to go through the process of constantly redrawing stickman?

I use [k] to get me into local adjustments, and [z] to zoom in, how I can pan around without deselecting the local adjustments (which loses which local adjustment I have selected). I tried [fn]+[arrow key] without any luck. This is very disruptive for me.

I'm working on Autodesk VBA, and I'm trying to get user input on which vertex to use for a constrain. I want to make a macro that can go into part edit, allow user to select a vertex, and then automatically set up the constraint. Initially I wanted to do this in a single macro, using this short piece of code
while oSelectSet.Count <>1
DoEvents
Wend
While this worked when run directly from VBA, if I call it as a macro in Autodesk itself, the DoEvents doesn't seem o work because I wasn't able to make any selection at all. I googled and it seems like this is just how macros are.
So I split the code into a 2 subs and a function (as attached), and put them into separates rules that I call using a form in Autodesk. The first sub "Meta1Pin1_1" works, then I would select a vertex in edit mode. But when I go ahead and call the second sub "Meta1Pin1_2", I get the error message that I created which says no vertex is selected. But if I select a vertex and call the second sub again, it will work.
So I've been trying different things and I realize that every time when I first call the second sub, my selection is erased teh moment it goes into the sub. But, for some unknown reason, the selection will remain when I call it the second time. I can't figure out what exactly happened between the first and second call of the same sub, that allowed the selection to remain.
' prepares assembly for user input by grounding bones and going into part edit
Public Sub Meta1Pin1_1()
Dim oDoc As AssemblyDocument
[Code]....

It's a problem occurring frequently If the contents of a specific layer is comprised of thin, short or small objects, brush strokes etc. and I need to move them.
When I try to select them (in order to move them), many times the mouse goes a little to the side of the objects (because they're so thin/small) and clicks on the object(s) on the layer beneath. This also has the unwanted side-effect of automatically deselecting the current layer.
Isn't it possible, once a layer is selected, to click and drag anywhere on the canvas to move its contents without deselecting it, like in Photoshop?

I am having an issue that appeared this morning when I woke up and turned my computer on... My AutoCAD 2012 (full) is locking up on certain things:
-When I select something without a command on (free selecting) it selects the items fine, but when I press the ESCAPE button to deselect everything there is a 1-2 second pause and then it deselects everything, instead of it instantly happening as it did for the past, oh I dunno, 10 years.
-If I select the items then type the command, normally it would instantly start that command with the items I had selected. Now, after selection items, when I type the command, it pauses for 1-2 seconds and the runs the command as usual.
-I am trying to edit an AutoCAD table, normally this is as smooth as butter. Now, not only are the same issues mentioned above happening, when I go to edit a cell, the typing has a 1-2 second delay and then starts. Once I start editing one box, it will move to the next cell smoothly. But if I click outside the box to end editing, there is a 1-2 second pause.
Last night, I randomly thought, "Oh, I'll run my McAfee virus scan because I haven't for a long time", literally I don't remember the last time I ran that. I also thought, "Oh, I might as well run the Dell PC Checkup scan", this is a factory program that came on the computer that again, I can not remember the lst time this was ran. Both scans went through Full Scans and found ZERO issues. The PC Checkup found one issue on an external hard drive that I use for BACK UP ONLY, I was not concerned with this because I figured it was either just an issue in the connection or between the 2 softwares. Also I wasn't concerned with it because if it does fail, it's a backup drive only anyway, so I'd just replace it.

After I position a crop on an image it keeps moving up, to the top of the image, after I deselect the image. I did use the upright functionality at first but turn it of to do it manually. Maybe this feature has left some settings in the LR develop settings for this image. I could post some screenshots if that will work.

I'm having troubles using Photoshop CS6 (64-bit) on Windows 7 (x64). After deselecting the move tool, or any tool that has move capabilities, such as the various transform tools, Photoshop crashes to the desktop.
I have reset all preferences by holding CTRL + ALT + SHIFT while starting Photoshop and by manually deleting the preferences files. I've also tried uninstalling and reinstalling Photoshop in its entirety. These attempts to solve the issue didn't change anything regarding the crashing. I am using the latest drivers for my graphics cards.

I am used to making a selection of part of the image - then you see the marching ants around your selection. Now in Photoshop at this stage I just press Ctrl-j and the selection gets put into its own layer above the current one. How do i do this in Gimp? and can you set up a keyboard shortcut for it?

I've read that to "drop" a selection tool, you choose "Select" "None". But very often "None" is not available to select, so how do you get rid of the tool when it goes wherever you go, like a piece of chewing gum stuck to your shoe?
I've tried clicking it, double-clicking, clicking outside the image, pressing escape, it won't go away, so I have to close the image and start again.
