AutoCad :: View Bound XREF's That Are Now Blocks
Jul 30, 2013
I'm a document controller that is trying to ID the situation with 2600 drawings. Some files are so large - 250,000kb, they won't open. They have bound xref's in them. We want to ask the contractor to unbind them and attach them as normal xref's. I need to view if a drawing has bound xref's. I just want to see them as BLOCKS which I now understand they are. How do I do view the blocks that were once xref's?

Is there a way to turn off blocks in an xref? Example.I would like to xref a lighting plan, however the "Exit Sign" blocks are to large and cover up the sprinklers, tees, and piping in my fire protection plan. Additionally the “Exit Sign” blocks have been inserted on the same layer as the "lighting" blocks which are very important in laying out sprinkler heads so I don’t place a sprinkler in a light.
I know of ways to fix this problem by editing the electrical drawing but it might cause more problems for the electrical draftsman. Any way to turn off these blocks?

I have a file I received from a consultant that has an annotative block in it. I've been trying to xref (attachment, not overlay) it into our files, and it's not showing up. I've got the affected layers on, the block units for both files are identical..
This block has editable attributes in it. The attribute is what is not showing up...the point, which is the other block component, displays correctly in the xref.

Just wondering how I would return attributes of blocks in my drawing's XRefs?
I've come across one example that is in VB but no luck.
I currently have a list in a form that consists of all the XRefs in my drawing and I wish to return all blocks and attributes that are linked to the selected XRef.

I have inserted an XREF with annotative blocks. The blocks in the original drawing are 1:1. In the new drawing I want to plot the XREF at 1:250. How do I set the annotative scale to the blocks with out adding scales to the original drawing?

I have recently started to have a problem with lines, leaders, blocks and x-refs etc, straying from level 0 for z. I think it may have something to do with the fact I am making use of files from cad duct 3d software, how do I prevent/resolve this?

We are having a problem with blocks not appearing after xreferencing a drawing. We can place blocks as normal from the tool palette, but as soon as we xreference a 2D site plan and select blocks from the tool palette, they will not place. You can see them when placing, but once you click to place it, the block does not appear. I have copied out the site plan to a new dwg file, still does the same thing. Everything has been purged and ran an audit in the plan drawing and also the site plan drawing. The block does not show up in the block editor either. I am trying to avoid redrawing the site plan like we had done with two models that were doing the same thing. Remodeling a vessel and rebuilding a skid composite corrected the problem with two other drawings, but redrawing this site plan would take considerable time.

I'm having a senior moment. When you substitute one xref with another, the reference retains the name of the original xref. However, there's a simple trick to update that reference to the new name - but I've forgotten it.

I have several .dwg files which I attach using XREF so that I can ensure I have the latest versions combined.
The problem is that the line types do not show up correctly. After looking up on google I have found that this is a problem due to it being a 3d model rather than it being flat.
I managed to half solve the issue by inserting each drawing into one, then exploding the whole image. Then changing the scale in the bottom right to around 1:200 to make the line types visible.
My problem is this ends up being a lot of work as the separate drawings can be updated daily. Is it possible to have all the drawings Xref'd in and to be able to have the scale changed to be able to read the line types? I tried to save the XREF setup as a template, then just bind all the drawings into one, explode and change the scale. But for some reason this doesnt work for me. I end up with just solid lines, rather than line types. I don't the drawings are made up of several lines, all of different length. (This I have been told is why the scales do not appear correctly)
I have been shown one method to work around this, which is to open the Xref drawings, explode them, then take each section of line and manually change each scale to the biggest that shows up.

The 2D drawings I am working with were exported from 3D REVIT files to 2D AutoCAD files. There are several XREFed drawings that are both mechanical and architectural from the original REVIT files that for whatever reason, the block's line weights came over with line weights of 70 in those blocks.
When I plot, the objects are a blur with the line weight so high. I tried using the command "setbylayer" but that didn't work since nested blocks still had lineweights of 70. Is there a VBA or LISP routine to run through all the blocks (including nested) that can change the line weights to a given number?

As a part of a 3D Cad course I am doing I have to use the slice command to obtain a section view of my model . Wblock is then used to copy to file and then oops used to get full model back. I have to produce numerous views including 3 of these sections in paperspace .Where and how do I xattach these section views . I have tried a few different ways without success.

How does it work? I see in the properties after I high lite it. Annotative Scale no/yes. We xref one drawing into other drawing and the view scale changes. will my hatch look the same or will the smaller view scale look really big in the drawing.

I am simply xref'ing a profile drawing into a sheet drawing to print out. AS shown on the attached, when the profile comes into the xref I lose all the band data and the EG line does not come in as a dashed 2 line as the layer is set to. It almost looks as if the PL linetype generation is off for this line.

I cannot xref a construct into a view dwg using PN. I get error "Could not reference file <construct> in <view>. Same problem whether I use relative or full pathing. But I can manually attach the construct using the XREF command. So I know it is not a file/folder permissions problem. What's annoying is that I did get it to work with one construct but not another.
I am using ACA 2013 and I see that there is a service pack 2 update.

Program: Civil3D 2010
Upon binding my dwgs to send to clients, sometimes I run across a serious problem. My xref'ed site plans disappear but my xref manager still lists it as attached, the layer manager still has every xrefed layer, and all other xrefs in the dwg will bind perfectly.
I have broken down all complex objects, purged, audited, cleaned up any excess scales, and even created new fresh dwgs for the xref and the drawing in question; all actions have ended in failure. I have even searched the AutoDesk forums for a solution and have found nothing substantial.
Solution: #1 Use RECOVERALL command on .dwg file that the xrefs disappear from. It will remove all proxy objects and excess scales in the file that is causing it to disappear in the first place.
#2 WBLOCK out the dwg file and any xrefs that are disappearing and insert them into new "clean" .dwg files. Must be done to all files.

I have used Autocad since 1991, and my current job required me to use Microstation. One feature I liked from Microstation is the ability to select and open an external DGN reference, and then match the view of the parent DGN, called the "EXCHANGE" command. In AutoCAD, you can also select and open an xref, but the DWG opens to the previous saved view, and not to the desired view that matches the layout.
My thought was to experiment with lisp or script and export the "Viewctr", "Viewtwist" and "Viewsize" variables to a text file, then importing the text file and using the "Viewtwist" as my "SNAPANG" value, then "Viewctr" as my "ZOOM, CENTER" value, and finally the "Viewsize" as the "Enter magnification or height:" value.
But, alas, I have no time, and not quite the knowledge to duplicate MicroStation's open-xref-and-zoom-to-view feature. I hesitate using the REFEDIT, which works fine for regular AutoCAD, but not so much for Civil 3D and the objects it creates (labels and other items with data shortcuts).

I have been attempting to pass a string array contained in a variant to the AutoCAD method AcadPlot.SetLayoutsToPlot. I am using late binding without a Interop assembly because we have several versions of AutoCAD in this company and I would like to support all of them from the same code base. The method wants a variant that contains a string array passed byref. The Microsoft documentation on COM interop from VB.NET makes it sound like the compiler will marshal it correctly by default, but it always throws a COMException (Exception from HRESULT: 0x80070057 (E_INVALIDARG)).
The stack trace shows it is trying to anyway:
StackTrace:
at Microsoft.VisualBasic.CompilerServices.LateBinding.InternalLateCall(Object o, Type objType, String name, Object[] args, String[] paramnames, Boolean[] CopyBack, Boolean IgnoreReturn)
at Microsoft.VisualBasic.CompilerServices.NewLateBinding.LateCall(Object Instance, Type Type, String MemberName, Object[] Arguments, String[] ArgumentNames, Type[] TypeArguments, Boolean[] CopyBack, Boolean IgnoreReturn)
But no matter how I code it I cannot get this variant array passed to AutoCAD.I have tried:
Imports System.Runtime.InteropServices
' VB default marshalling
Dim layoutarr = New Object() {"Layout1"}
doc.Plot.SetLayoutsToPlot(layoutarr)
' using a VariantWrapper
Dim layoutarr = New Object() {"Layout1"}
Dim wrapper As New System.Runtime.InteropServices.VariantWrapper(layoutarr)
doc.Plot.SetLayoutsToPlot(wrapper)
[code]...
As intensively as AutoCAD ActiveX uses variant arrays, I know this problem is going to come up again and again for me as I try to migrate code over to .NET.

I have a Room Tag (multi-view block) that was created in a previous release of AutoCAD Architecture that is not coming in at the correct scale in AutoCAD Architecture 2011. When we used to insert this block into an 1/8"=1'-0" drawing, it came in at a scale of 12.0,12.0,12.0. Now when we insert it into a 1/8"=1'-0" drawing, it comes in at 9.0,9.0,9.0. So, at 1/4"=1'-0" it comes in at 4.5,4.5,4.5; when it should be 6.0,6.0,6.0. I have many custom blocks that we have created for door tags, section refs, etc. and would just like to know what scale factor needs to be adjusted to fix this small issue.

I'm fairly new to Autocad and getting used to using sheet set manager. What I'm experiencing is, when you insert a model view it brings in an xref of that model, but i'm then unsure how to add additional xref models into the same view.
For example I have a separate ground floor plan file and OS data file which I want to show in the one sheet view without nesting the OS data to the original ground floor file.

I'm pretty new to using multi view blocks and rendering etc etc... basically all I want to do is show my surface (lake and landscaping) as grass, show a clear blue hatch to represent the water line and add some multi view blocks.. people and trees...
Using the multiview blocks toolpalette I have dragged and dropped some blocks into model space and ensured they are at the correct elevation to sit on the surface...
I have noticed that only one of the multi view blocks within the landscape tab is showing as I would expect - the rest all look like an extruded cross... I don't know how to fix this or whether this is correct.

In Photoshop CS6, the moment you select the Crop Tool, a "cropping bounding box" appears instantly over the image. This didn't happen in CS5. In CS5 I would be able to click and start dragging the Crop Tool 'outside' the image and then drag into it so that my "cropping bounding box" (don't know what to call it) would snap to the edges of the image.
In CS6, since this box is automatically there already over the entire image, clicking outside the image invokes some unwanted rotation action.

I've created a script and bound it to an icon, then added the icon to the standard toolbar.
Everything works, but the script will (correctly) give an error message if it's run when no image is open.
The bound icon on the toolbar is always enabled, even if no image is open. Is there a way to have the icon disabled (grayed out) if no image is open?
