AutoCad 3D :: How To Pull 2D Geometry Off Of 3D Model Or Extrapolate
Apr 4, 2013
I have been using Autocad on and off for a while, I am currently using 2005, but have only really worked in 2d.
I have designed a chassis for my hot rod and I have a side elevation and a top elevation which I have extruded and subtracted to produce a 3d model of the chassis rail.
My problem is how do I pull the true 2d geometry off of the 3d model or extrapolate ( I think thats the right word ) from the top and side elevations to produce a cutting path for the laser cutters.

How to pull the path & file name of an IPT from within an IDW?
If I use this line from within an IDW:
ModelName = IO.Path.GetFileName(ThisDrawing.ModelDocument.FullFileName)
it will simply return the file name of the corresponding IPT.
I want to be able return the path for the IPT from within the IDW as well.

How should I model a random 3D-geometry using AUTOCAD?
I have NEZ data from total station survey of an uneven region. Importing them to AUTOCAD gives me points.
What element should I use to model the 3D geometry enabling me to perform further calculations like volume etc. ?

I am trying to see my model space in paper space but nothing is there. tried creating viewports, but they are blank, tried to try different scales, still no joy? tried different layers etc, all layers are on!
This is only happening last couple days but is same for all my drawings. I must have changed a setting or got something very wrong?
how to get my paperspace back!

Is there a way to hide project geometry from model sketch? I am modeling a sheetmetal part where I need to sketch centermaks, part number etc. for laser cutting. I want to use xy planes for symmetry reasons when sketching, but I don't want them to appear in dxf. This is a problem if I create a dxf directly from the model.
Usually I create dxf files from drawing by adding new sheet where I create flat pattern view from the spesific part (excluding machinigs etc, only thermal cut boundaries visible). In the drawing I am allso able to show model sketches and hide unwanted project geometry. Is it possible to include these sketches to dxf?

Using acad 10 I just start using annotative styles now, so far in order to detail a part I use to actually copy the geometry, change styles and scale and start detailing.
The problem is that often when Im detailing and annotating a part I need it to be clipped.
Is there any way to tell autocad that in scale 1:25 I don’t want to see all the structure but only a specific area of it(clipped inside a rectangle)

Is it possible to have model space geometry print through a watermark in the layout? My watermark consists of mtext with an arial font placed manually in the layout. It is on it's own layer which is set to print at Shade 40 (plot style tables). Draworder works with other layout objects but not the geometry from the model space viewport. My watermark covers the model space geometry so it is not visible when printed. Is this possible?

I created the following user parameters:
-Thickness
-Width
-Length
-Dia
I then created a Custom iProperty which consisted of the following "formula": Finished Material Size = <Thickness> x <Width> x <Length> Lg.
eg. of Finished Material Result : Finished Material Size = 6 x 25 x 300 Lg.
The problem comes up when dealing with diametrical components as the above formula will only populate for square or rectangular parts. Which would work if I could use iLogic code to populate the Finished Material Size iProperty. I have tried but failed.
First I created another user parameter called "Geometry Type" which has a drop down selection of either "DIA" or "SQUARE, RECTANGULAR".I then created the following iLogic code to set 0 as the value for the "unused" size parameters
If PART_GEOMETRY = "DIA" Then WIDTH = "0"If PART_GEOMETRY = "DIA" Then THICKNESS = "0"If PART_GEOMETRY = "SQUARE, RECTANGULAR" Then DIA = "0"
The part I just can't get to work is as follows.
I need some iLogic code which will populate the "FINISHED MATERIAL SIZE" custom iproperty with one of the following based on my "GEOMETRY TYPE" selection. "DIA" would return the following to "FINISHED MATERIAL SIZE": = Ø <Dia> x <Length> Lg.
While "SQUARE, RECTANGULAR" would return the following to "FINISHED MATERIAL SIZE": = <THICKNESS> x <WIDTH> x <LENGTH> Lg.I tried the following code but it does not work:
If PART_GEOMETRY = "DIA" Then iProperties.Value("Custom", "FINISHED MATERIAL SIZE")= "Ø"DIA "x" LENGTH "Lg."If PART_GEOMETRY = "SQUARE, RECTANGULAR" Then iProperties.Value("Custom", "FINISHED MATERIAL SIZE")= THICKNESS "x" WIDTH "x" LENGTH "Lg."

I just installed 2011 and was in the process of setting up my workspace when I realized i could not find the Status Bar pull down on the View Tab/Windows Panel. Help still says it is there. When I went into the CUI I could not find the command or even the icon. I know that you can right click and edit the status bar buttons but you can only do them one at a time and then you have to right click again to get rid or add the next button and then right click again....the drop down, available in the last several releases enabled you to just check them on or off all at one time.

Alright, so I was using this site earlier to create a 3D park where, because of how I cad, was told to use the "press and pull" command on closed objects as they will be pulled or pressed into 3D shapes.
Up to this point it has worked on every structure I can think of but this time around it has not.
I am working on a Whale Slide for the park and, for some reason, I am unable to press/pull the parts out in order to complete the 3D effect.
This is the area I am tryin to press/pull:
Whale Slide Selection.jpg
Now, as you can see the entire slide is not complete yet. The reason being that I don't want to cad it all out only to find that it doesn't work. The "tail" part of it was avle to form pefectly fine but this part will not.
I have tried the loft, swipe, etc. commands but they never make a solid object which is what I need. The lines are all connected and I've pressed/pulled angles before so I'm not to sure what is wrong.
Here is the file incase you need it: Whale Slide.dwg

On older versions of Acad, I was able to go into the .mnu file and do a macro such as follows:
***POP10
**LIB2
ID_MNLIB2 [&Lib2]
[->Bolts]
[->Bolt ****'y]
[#10]^C^C-insert;F:/STD/LIBS/BOLT-01/BOLT010A;;;;
[* 1/4]^C^C-insert;F:/STD/LIBS/BOLT-01/BOLT025A;;;;
[5/16]^C^C-insert;F:/STD/LIBS/BOLT-01/HH031A;;;;
[*3/8]^C^C-insert;F:/STD/LIBS/BOLT-01/HH038A;;;;
And a new pull down menu would be created and my listing of bolts could be inserted from the std libs bolt file as I clicked through the route. I developed all of this on older versions at a different company. With 2014, I went to the CUSTOMI ZE under the main Drafting and Annotation / AutoCAD Classic pull down and created a New Menu, renamed to BOLTS and then pulled the INSERT command and dropped it ontp the BOLTS pull down and changed the DISPLAY NAME to 1/4" and edited the MACRO from ^C^C _insert to ^C^C_insert;F:/STD/LIBS/BOLT-01/BOLT025A;;;; Seemed to work fine....until I added another 10 bolt assemblies and then noticed that they all showed up as whatever the last bolt I had put in the Macro line was. The display name stayed correct but the insert was gloabally changed on all pull down to whatever the last item was. I have reset 2014 back to the original settings now to clear out everything I had done.

I can do it with the imprint command but isn't there a faster way of doing it, like in Sketch up?

I am wondering if it is possible to have pulldown menus items be brought in on the layer that they were created on versus the layer that your template has current. I created pull down menus and (not thinking ahead) put them all on layer 0. They come in with all the attributes they were created with, but come in on the current layer. Can I change that?

In autocad 2013 there was a pull down menu in the layer panel for layer states. 2014 does not have that. How to get that to show up in 2014? I also need the pull down menu for dimension styles.
Unless im missing something it seems like it takes more move to do some basic stuff in 2014.

Something I'd like to see fixed (or find out how) is when using the start New File icon, if you select the icon itself, you are directed to the templates folder of the active project, but if you select the "Pull Down" arror next to the icon, you are taken to the Inventor Standard default templates which are typically not used.
I see numerous users unknowingly selecting those default templates and not noticing until they've started entering dims, etc. They get very upset at having to make sure they select the icon and question as to why it would be different.
Same deal if one is to select the Inventor Icon in the far left upper corner (this is more common than the users selecting the pull down) and then select "New", again, they are shuttled to the default templates and not the associated project file templates...why?

I have installed the two service packs hoping to fix this issue. There appears to be a limit to the quantity of items that can be selected if trying to change a property using a pulldown menu. For example, if I select all items in a drawing (say 25,000 items, didn't test the limit), using (CTRL+A) or with mouse, and all items are not the same color, the OBJECT COLOR menu should be blank (have not value) because there is not only one color for the objects. Same would be true of the Layer menu if all objects are not on the same layer. This does not happen, the current Color or Layer are shown in the menu's. WIth the objects selected, changing the color (say from red to green) has no effect. Same is true if trying to assign all selected items to a specific layer. WIth less items selected (didn't test the limit), things work as expected.
I tried to see if the problem was with the menu, so I used the command line commands. Change, Property, Color, with all items selected works fine. Is there a bug with 2011 LT re this? I didn't have this issue using ACAD LT 2008 previously.
