AutoCAD Inventor :: Ribs On Curved Surface / Trimming To Complex Surface
Feb 28, 2013I'm designing a press for a skateboard similar to: Rib Press
I have the board modeled: (see attached)
Now what i want to do is generate those ribs as seen in the picture.
I tried creating a block that intersected with the board and tried to split the rib at the surface, but to no avail. I think the issue has something to do with the curve of the board in two directions, but i can't seem to get it right.
if you are having trouble visualizing what i'm asking about, look at this. I want to be able to figure out the exact shape of those center ribs to print and eventually cut out of wood.
AutoCad 2D :: Dimensions Going All Over Place After Trimming A Line
Mar 22, 2011A coworker and I are having the same problem with dimensions. For example, we have a polyline that has been dimensioned and then we will either need to trim or break a small portion out. When we trim or break the line the dimensions on that line fly all over the place so we end up needed to re-dimension everything. We have had this problem in AutoCAD 2008, 2010, and 2011. Maybe we need to change a variable? The polylines have a zero Z-axis and it does not happen everytime we trim or break but enough to become annoying. Our CAD Manager had as try to disassociate the dimension, break the line, and then reassociate it but that didn't work; the dimensions were still shifted around.

Dec 11, 2012I needed to remove a feature line that I used as a break line when creating a surface. When I removed the feature line from the definition of the surface, the grading did not change. It appears the points created by the feature line remain which is why grading didn't change. The only work around was to delete these points.
I noticed the same thing happens when I removed the surface boundary and inserted a new boundary. why these points remain and how to remove when I delete boundary and feature line from surface?
AutoCAD Civil 3D :: Tie Feature Line To Surface
Sep 4, 2013I created a label for retaining wall that takes the z value from the start and end of a feature line. Works great except that it isn't dynamic. I have created the feature line in a grading sheet where the surface is data shortcut into it and I'm just using grips to make sure the ends are on the bottom and top of the retaining wall. Is there any way to dynamically pin/tie the feature line to a surface that has been data shortcut?

Jul 12, 2013I was wondering if there is a way that I can take an existing grade surface and apply a designed pond surface.
Right now I have the pond as a set of 3d Polylines in the proper geometry.
I want to place the pond into this surface and cut/fill at a 3:1 from that pond to the existing surface.
AutoCAD Civil 3D :: Elevate Feature Line To A Surface
Jun 6, 2013This is the message I get when trying to elevate a featureline to a surface in C3D 2012, SP3. The featurlines (4 of them) lie entirely within subject surface but I am unable to get this command (AeccFeatureElevsFromSurf) to complete correctly with any of them.
The 4 featurelines are at the red arrows, a corridor from the centerline at the green arrow has been created, from which the subject surface was derived and is depicted by the yellow & green contour lines.
AutoCAD Civil 3D :: Surface Display - Weeding Contour Line?
Jul 24, 2012Is it possible to weed contour lines displayed in a surface based on the slope? I am having an issue plotting construction plans due to steep cut slopes and flat adjacent areas. I have several cuts ranging from 33%-50% adjacent to flat areas around 1%. Due to the drawing scale required by the client and the .2FT and 1FT contours required to detail the flat areas, my steep cuts appear as dark hatches due to the tight contour lines.

Jun 20, 2013I have surface style (could be slope or spot elevation) with a 2 line component, and text component above and below the line. I'm trying to create on style for many options. I'm using c3d 2013, but moving to 2014.
I would like to do the following after placing the label:
1. adjust the length of the line component. (ex: as I rotate the lable, the length of seg 1 changes )
2. turn off one of the line component
3. adjust the angle of one of the line component.
4. when drag, the length of the line changes to a new value.
and while I'm asking, is there a way to move/rotate/drag the syle to a percise distance. I want the leader to be 1 unit long at 30 degree angle.
AutoCAD Civil 3D :: Grading To Existing Surface From Feature Line
Aug 2, 2012I have an existing surface with a steep slope and a feature line for the edge of a proposed walkway. I need a buffer of 25m on either side of the walkway but offsetting doesn't take the grade of the slope into account. How do I grade down the hill from the feature line at 25m to match to the existing surface?

Also I know you can use the the linear tool under Annotations to display dimensions of 2D lines. Nov 22, 2013I'm working on cross sections and ran into a problem. I had to edit my surface but it wouldn't cooperate with me. So instead, I just erased the whole surface and restarted it. After I got my surface the way I like it, I added my sample lines to where they are supposed to be. Problem is, my cross sections turned out blank.
So for now, I skipped to create a surface profile and see both of my surfaces available on the bottom. The old one I deleted and the newly created one. It won't let me go to the bottom and erase the old deleted surface. When I go into my toolspace-prospector....it only shows my newly created surface and nothing more. Is this a reason why my cross sections come up blank?
I'll show you a pic of my toolspace with just the current surface and another pic of the "create a surface profile" showing that it still has both the old and new (all in CAPS) but it won't let me delete the original.

AutoCad 3D :: Trim One Side Of Circular Surface By Using Projected Line
Nov 21, 2011I am trying to trim one side of a circular surface by using a projected line that forms my trimming line. The original surface is simply a circle that is swept along a path (like a tube/cylinder). When trimming by using the projected line it wants to cut all the way through the surface (i.e. both sides of the tube/cylinder) but I only want it to cut out one side. Is there a way of allowing this or do I create two semi-circular surfaces, therefore only cutting/trimming in effect one side?

Aug 26, 2013Why can't Inventor constrain an ellipsoidal contour with a line? We have pressure cylinders which uses a 2:1 ellipse. These cylinder get welded to a base stand fixture. The surface of the ellipse nestles in between contact points of the base stand, in this case lines of geometry. Yet Inventor can't constrain them as such. Any good workflow (at the assembly level) so that we don't have to ground components and use the Analyze Interference tool to make sure we are right on the surfaces? I don't understand why it will work for a cylindrical surface but not an elliptical surface.

AutoCAD Map 3D :: Drop Ortho-photo On Surface Generated From Contour Line - Multiple Association
Nov 5, 2013I want to do a simple thing : drop ortho-photo on surface generated from contour line.
First thing, I need the basic terrain. I did import my contour line in a new draw, using the import map feature. I then saved the draw under the name " topo ". At this point, the contour line are 2D break line with no elevation.
I then opened a new draw to which I did associate my draw " topo ". Then I used a query to modify the elevation of the line using the attribute " contour " in my table, thus resulting in my breakline to become 3-D. It works fine. Then I save the new draw as " 3D_Topo ". I then get a warning :
" The association between objects interogated in the current drawing and associated will be deleted once the current document of the draw is closed " (I made the translation from french to english, in french it stated like this : " L'association entre des objets interrogés dans des dessins courants et associés sera supprimée une fois le fichier de dessin courant fermé. " ).
Well question #1 : What does this warning mean / imply ?
Then, I have those .ecw files as ortho photo which I want to import. So I use the function " connect " with raster image, then I select my file, then I " add to draw ".... then something very strange happens.
Sometime, the image appears correctly...and some other times I get nothing and I get this " disconnected " message in the task pane ..and no matter how many time I actually connect again the .ecw files, it will not happen in the draw ! Then I simply close the draw, start map 3D again, then I do the exact same thing, and sometime it works, sometime it doesn't.
Question #2 : any clue on why the .ecw files sometime works, sometime doesn't?
Now, let's assume I finally made it to connect correctly and that Map3d didn't crash whilst I was doing it (because I don't know for you, but here, it does happens quit often), I now have (as shows in the picture I attached) two thing. A surface made (well, I went back in the civil 3-D module to make the actual surface from the breakline definition) with the contour line and a imported image. I now want to drap the image on my surface! So I use the option " drap " which is in the surfaces option (in the ribbon surface tools)... well it looks nice since it propose me to use the surface I made up with the contour line as the base and the imported .ecw files as the file to be draped upon. So I simply do that and.... well...nothing happens! My image isn't draped at all, it stays there,
Question #3 : How should I proceed to actually drap my image over my surface ?
Question #4 : Considering I made it to drap the surface, how can I save this new draw independently of the attached other draw or database?

AutoCad :: Trimming A Door Jamb
Nov 18, 2011New to Autocad and using Autocad 2010. I am trying to trim a door jamb and attached my project in this thread. The attached picture coming close to finishing the drawing. There are other door jambs in the drawing that I have not started.
Trimming the door jamb I have selected several lines. Appearing in the attachment as two horizontal lines located above the lower left square and the left vertical outside double line border. These are my step to trim these lines.
Extend Command. Select both horizontal lines. Press Enter to end the command.
Trim Command: Select both horizontal lines once more. Enter.
Select vertical outside lines. Enter twice.
Trim Command running select both horizontal lines again. press Enter.
Completing the jamb in the drawing the two horizontal lines still there only as dashed lines. After saving the project these lines appear as solid lines.
Coming close with these steps. Is it possible to show me how to trim the door jamb following these guide lines I have outlined.

May 16, 2013Is there a command or lisp that will allow you to select a closed polyline and trim everything outside of it even if the items are blocks that aren’t exploded?

Apr 17, 2012Is there a way of trimming an SDF or SHP file with multiple polygons within a boundary buffer zone, but keep the entire of all of the crossing polygons.
I have managed to create a feature overlay for the trimming selection but the 'Union' command creates a new layer with all of both SDF files I'm comparing, not just the ones within the buffer zone.

Dec 21, 2011Has noticed that the offset command has changed in 2010? (unless i am going mad) see image below. i'm sure if you offset a polyline, with no node at the crossing point, in pre-2010, it would end up as second image.

But now i get the 3rd and 4th types, which i admit is pretty good for offsetting both sides and deleting original construction line, but not always better that the original method. Is there a variable or option somewhere to change the performance?
AutoCAD Inventor :: Trimming Multiple Faces At Once
Feb 3, 2012how to cut or split more than one face of a surface model in one go. The only way (it seems) is to use the Trim command for every face you need to trim, whereas I want to choose the cutting tool (a plane or face) and then choose a whole lot of faces (by holding CTRL and clicking the faces) and trim them all in one go. Is this possible? I can do this in Fusion, but Fusion is way too slow on my PC compared to Inventor.
I also tried extruding a sketch through the surfaces to cut them, but it doesn't work (Inventor complains that there aren't any solids to cut).
