AutoCAD Civil 3D :: Adding Feature Lines To Surface As Break Line
Jan 31, 2012
When adding break lines to a surface, a dialog box like appears that asks for weeding factors and supplementing factors. What I would like to know is, how can I change the defaults to reflect the settings needed on my project.
I am using C3D 2009.

I needed to remove a feature line that I used as a break line when creating a surface. When I removed the feature line from the definition of the surface, the grading did not change. It appears the points created by the feature line remain which is why grading didn't change. The only work around was to delete these points.
I noticed the same thing happens when I removed the surface boundary and inserted a new boundary. why these points remain and how to remove when I delete boundary and feature line from surface?

I am working on a 6 mile highway project whose surface file is 85MB big. So, I created a Data Shortcut of this surface and used this for creating profiles. However, at some locations the corridors go below the surface(as per their original profile) which was not intended. So, I need to restrict the surface to follow the corridors but not go beyond it.
I have created feature lines from corridors and tried to add them as breaklines to the surface. But " error adding breakline" error pops up.
Is it because I am trying to add the breaklines to the mirror surface which I created from Data Shortcut ??
Will it be useful if I copy feature lines to original surface file and add these feature lines as breaklines in that file??

I often use feature lines for parking lots and ponds. They're great when they work, but they drive me NUTS when they don't - which is a lot of the time. For parking lots and ponds, my feature lines usually close back on themselves. That's when I have trouble breaking the feature line. When I use BREAKFEATURE, I choose two points and this should, in theory, leave a gap in the feature line between those two points. That's not what happens. I end up with a huge gap between the first point I picked and a vertex point 5 or 6 vertices away. It doesn't matter where I pick the breaking points.
I've also tried TRIMFEATURES. I draw lines across the feature line where I would have chosen the breaking points. But the portion that I want to remove is the portion that always remains. It doesn't matter where I select the feature line to be trimmed (inside or outside of the cutting edges).
I think there may something wrong with the feature line itself. Sometimes, if I erase the original and draw a new one, it will trim just fine. But that's such a headache, and it doesn't always work. If I knew what was causing the feature lines to go squirrely, I would aviod it. Unfortunately, it seems like breathing the wrong way can screw up a feature line.

I created a label for retaining wall that takes the z value from the start and end of a feature line. Works great except that it isn't dynamic. I have created the feature line in a grading sheet where the surface is data shortcut into it and I'm just using grips to make sure the ends are on the bottom and top of the retaining wall. Is there any way to dynamically pin/tie the feature line to a surface that has been data shortcut?

I was wondering if there is a way that I can take an existing grade surface and apply a designed pond surface.
Right now I have the pond as a set of 3d Polylines in the proper geometry.
I want to place the pond into this surface and cut/fill at a 3:1 from that pond to the existing surface.

This is the message I get when trying to elevate a featureline to a surface in C3D 2012, SP3. The featurlines (4 of them) lie entirely within subject surface but I am unable to get this command (AeccFeatureElevsFromSurf) to complete correctly with any of them.
The 4 featurelines are at the red arrows, a corridor from the centerline at the green arrow has been created, from which the subject surface was derived and is depicted by the yellow & green contour lines.

I have an existing surface with a steep slope and a feature line for the edge of a proposed walkway. I need a buffer of 25m on either side of the walkway but offsetting doesn't take the grade of the slope into account. How do I grade down the hill from the feature line at 25m to match to the existing surface?

Putting in a simple berm crest, and the triangles skip right over a certain section. Swap edge does nothing and adding points seems to make things worse. I have been able to fix this problem before, but only by deleting my surface and then putting all the pieces back in at once. Then it's perfect.
I think part of the problem may be that the "Contour help" I put in at the blue major contours is screwing things up.I have had the same issue when putting in down-slope channels as well.

I am trying to visualize a road project. The problems is, whenever the corridor surface goes below the EG surface (when the road is in cut) the EG surface is the only visible surface.
I sort of need to subtract the corridor surface from the EG surface, or merge the both surfaces into one.

I am running Autocad Civil 3D 2012. I created a figure prefix database that our surveyors were familiar when coding in the field. It is a numeric code list. I received a survey last week that had 6 break lines coded in the point file. Only one of the 6 acts as a break line.
All break lines start and stop with the right line work commands but they fail to break crossing triangle legs. I've checked everything I can think of and the setup looks correct . The only difference between the one break line that works and the others is that break line has sequential point numbers while the other break line codes are scattered throughout the point file.

When I add features to a surface, they don't keep the feature name. It gets a generic numerical name ie dike:1, dike:2. Is there a way to get the names to hold? How does one keep track of the features/breaklines?

I have created an easement after I selected the line callouts and created my parcel table I realized I missed selecting one of my line labels and it is missing from my table. I know I can just erase the table and then reselect all line callouts to create a NEW table, but I was wondering if there was a way to just select the line callout I missed and have it added to the parcel table without recreating a new one.

So here's an odd one (at least I think it's odd ): I have a drawing that it utilizing feature lines which are projected to the cross sections to display R.O.W., easements, etc. However, every now and then (there doesn't appear to be any similar operation that causes this) the feature lines will change their location, in this case they typically seem to move north and east about 200'. I can't deuplicate the problem...it just seems to happen on its own.
I'm running Civil 3D 2013 with SP 2.

I have created a feature line from a survey which will be the inside shld of my new road design. I have created the feature line using my design elevations but need to add a PI and Elevation at a specific Northing. When I try to edit I can only seem to find the chainage and elevation but I also need to know the northings and eastings so I know where to insert my PI. I would like to just edit the table since I can't seem to figure out how to insert the PI. (I am new to C3D and still learning...) My final product will be a road with 2% crossfall and I intend to use offeset and grading features to accomplish my final design. How I make this edit...

I'm currently using the Autocad Civil 3D 2014 on daily basis for urban infrastructure design. When using Autocad Civil 3D 2013, I always would create feature lines from corridors and then export this file to a ACAD 2007 version, which would read the feature lines as 3D polys. The company's topographer could then use this file to make his markings on the field very easily.
Now, when I do the same process using Autocad Civil 3D 2014, the ACAD 2007 file won't present the feature lines as 3D polys, but as 2D polys. This presents a major inconvenient, because I now have to export the file to ACAD 2007, open it in Autocad Civil 3D 2013, rebuild the surface from the design contours and create a feature line from the design surface; export the surface AGAIN to ACAD 2007 and FINALLY I'll get the 3D poly my topographer can read.

I am new to civil 3d. I am building a site down the side of a mountain which consists of 4 tiers/ pads with different levels. Each of the 4 pads has its own feature line. To prevent any confusion or attractions of the feature lines to each other i have moved them to a site that i created called temp site locations.
What is the best way and location to do each of these gradings and how do i tie them all back on to the same drawing ? I assume (maybe wrongly) to do each separately and copy back into the the real drawing.
Do i need to create a new site for each pad. If i do my grading in the temporary site when i bring them back to the real site will the interact with the other feature lines.

I have a created a surface from contour lines.I have drawn a feature line and assigned elevations (it slopes down from 3.5m elevation to 2m elevation). I have added grading from the feature line to the existing surface but have not merged the feature line with the surface.
I also have to make a low area (elevation at 1.5m) on the surface and know i need to grade at 1:1 from the feature line to the low point. Is there a way to grade from a feature line at a given grade (1:1) to a known height (my low point at 1.5m) without drawing another feature line for my low point? Seeing as the height of the feature line varies I can't just offset it at the grade.. I.e. the grade is the constant here.
I will have a few walls and lower / higher areas to grade to. I have drawn the top of my wall and mounds and have assigned them elevations but not sure whether to now make them all feature lines and try to merge with the surface by grading at a set grade or to do some sort of infill.
