AutoCad 3D :: Historic Residence - Fancy Concrete Baluster
Apr 3, 2013
i have a historic residence i am working on and was wanting to sharpen my modelling skills a bit, but i have a fancy concrete baluster and i do not know how to model it. i would imagine create a profile as a pline and then array it around a center point, but does this make it a 3d model of just 2d items rotated around a 3d point.

I'm working on a photo of a building from the late 1800s. The edge of the roof has a grainy halo around it. I'd like to extend this texture to the corner of the photo and eliminate the white background currently there.

I need to export a model of a historic building from 3ds max to Quest 3D and create a walk through. The model is very detailed and was not designed with my goal in mind. My job for now is to optimize and remove all unnecessary things from the model.
I got stuck very early on when I tried to bake the textures. I'm using VRay rendered and when I pick a certain object to render and use VrayCompleteMap element the rendered image always appears completely black.

I have this railing with glass baluster. The glass baluster panel is 2'-0" in length. The railing is not on a 2'-0" modular length so the last panel extends past the corner of the railing. I can set the baluster placement to be centered on the railing which gives me a panel at each end that is extended past the corner. I understand this is normal based on my what I am asking Revit to. My question is, how can I get the 24" glass panels centered on the railing length but have the two end panels automatically adjust in lenght to make up the difference and not be 2'-0"?

When I try to create new baluster in the family but it belongs to air terminal category. Is there any clashes? Any family category description. Such as what is the difference between Lighting fixture and Lighting device. In Autodesk library has few families which has same things with different category.

I usually duplicate a baluster from the family and adjust the widths to what I want. I'm trying to make a 1/2" x 4" baluster but its not changing to the new dimensions.

how fancy up your text? Specifically, I wanted to know if there was anyway to add some graphical easthetics to text such as shading or colored patterns. How could I get a 3D effect going, either making the text look like it was carved into stone or pop out bubble-style?

I'm trying my noob hand at making fancy scroll graphics. I am not sure if it's naturally a time consuming task or if there is an easier way (which I haven't discovered yet) in CorelDRAW X5.Here is the closest example I can find on what I am trying to do:
You will note that the lines in the Scroll varies width and it is a symmetrical graphic. What I want to know, is there an easy way to recreate something like this by scratch (not doing PowerTrace)?Or is it a time consuming project using the shape tool and adjusting nodes?

I would love to accomplish what you see below in the red, very elegant and beautiful twirls and swirls. Any tips?

how people make web page backgrounds like this.
Notice the blue bluring outside the main page. I know that this is done as a table background, but it also changes size on diffirent pages
do table backgrounds stretch? or do they repeat? is the guy using a diffirent background image for each page on hes site? Also another thing is that hes using the same image in the middle table on the left? or is that just the same image but stretched with a diffirent filename?

I've look at many sites in the last 24 hours to find a tutorial that will show me how to select and delete a dying petal of a flower, copy a another one form the same flower and rotate it and replace the deleted one.
If I knew what the function was called I would have a better chance, but I am the proverbial newbie with any photo manipulation software.

I have a drawing of a stone railing section and I have to change direction in the run direction of the baluster panel. Is there a way that I can move the details without changing th Y direction of the details. Please refer to the attached CAD file for details. I am trying to avoid having to redesign the panels if possible. railing detail.dwg

I have been trying to draw a precast concrete tank and have run into a problem. The tank walls are not constant thickness. At the bottom they are 3.5" thick and taper to 3" thick at the top. Also, the top dimensions of the tank are longer and wider than the bottom dimensions of the tank. My solution has been to draw the outside bottom as a rectangle and offset the rectangle by 3.5". Then repeat this for the top dimensions, set the top two rectangles at the correct elevation and loft them. Then, I press-pull the center out of the tank. This results in a quasi-correct representation of the outside tank but the wall thickness does not taper correctly and the walls are hollow.

I am working on some detail drawings. To save time, I simply modify the previous drawings. However, when i need to adjust the height of, for example, a window, by stretching or pulling, none can have the hatched area lengthened or reduced. In ''quick properties", the associative is not applicable if i change it from N-->Y. I'm wondering if i am doing any step wrong.

I wonder how do you create a concrete construction under the stairs?
The way ACA creates stairs looks like just a top layer (tiles or wood panels), but I want to put those tiles on a concrete construction.

I have been asked to do volume calculations using Civil 3D for some concrete piles for a oil/survey company. I have done volume calculations for site and land development projects but nothing to do with concrete piles before. It also appears I am the only person with any Civil 3D back ground in the office. I did mention my experience with Civil 3D was limited but I was trying to expand it by looking for Civil 3D jobs and working through the 2012 Mastering AutoCAD Civil 3D book.
I am assuming doing volume calculations for concrete piles is quite different from doing volume calculations for grading plans. The company has been primary using AutoCAD Maps and doesn't have much set up for AutoCAD Civil 3D yet.

I've had a request from on of our users to replicate something that has been done for years in 2D CAD. They want a marker to show changes in floor levels that look something like this:-
The annotation needs to be able to read the slab on either side of the step marker and hopefully if possible the difference be represented as text. The datum levels are secondary and it is really the depth of the step that seems to be more important. I do however want to avoid these being just dumb text as if/when the design evolves someone will forget to modify the text.
Here is an example of a few showing two steps in the slab and the results we would want.
I have tried loading/nesting a standard spot level in thinking if I had two in an annotation that this might work, but I was unable to even place a spot marker within the family which makes some sense I suppose.
Is this even technically possible...? I realize the origin usually determines what hosts the family and how, but I guess we are looking for something with a double origin, which is why I think this may not be possible...?

What's the best way to create tilt up concrete panels? In the screen grab bellow, I used an extrusion, gave it concrete material, and left a 10mm gap between each panel to create that illusion.
Can this be done as a wall, if so how do I add those gaps/voids?

I am looking to create an irregular concrete slab, with barrel vaulted ceilings on a small radial section of a circular slab, and a a parabolically curved upper section to the slab, and a large punched hole in the middle of the slab. To this point, I have been able to achieve this using multiple components and masses, but I was wondering if there was a way to make a single object with a single solid material that may be able to achieve the same effect. I have attached a section for ease of explanation.
