AutoCAD Inventor :: Cannot Convert To Weldment

May 31, 2013

I have a medium sized assembly that I was working with.  I decided I needed to create a weldment, so I stripped the assembly of all subassemblies, individual parts, etc and saved it as a different name.  However, Inventor will not allow me to convert it to a weldment.  That optoin is greyed out.

The only thing I can think of is I have a base part that I have hidden.  It is used to drive the assembly.  Perhaps that is causing a problem, but I cannot remove it or all associativity will be lost.  I deleted it temporarily to try, but did not save it.  The convert to weldment option did not appear after I deleted it.

AutoCAD Inventor :: Split Face In Weldment?

Sep 19, 2013

I'm trying to model plug welds in IV2014.  I've read all the posts here that say that I need to split the hole faces.  Problem is, the split face command doesn't seem to appear in weldments.  I want to make the holes to be plugged as a weld preparation.  Am I just missing something here, or is IV so backward that a common weld can only be achieved when not working with a weldment?

AutoCAD Inventor :: Adaptivity In Weldment Machining

Jun 28, 2013

I started my project, the design is basically a bulkhead chassis design with multiple access panels on all 3 sides. I wanted all of the hole patterns on this assembly to be based on one sketch. So I created a base part inside the assembly, this part compiled of sketches and the sketches compiled of construct lines and points (for panel and chassis fastener hole patterns). This was going great, after learning a couple tricks.

Manufactuing had determined that I need to machine the holes on the chassis after welding. Which means I need to move the adaptive features, from the part files, to the assembly file.

So here is my problem, assembly sketchs are not adaptable? Either projecting to (from that base part file), or projecting from (from the assembly sketch to the part file). I tried both. How I should model this? How do I make weldment machining adaptive?

AutoCAD Inventor :: Replace Components In Weldment Assembly

Mar 25, 2013

In past I replaced components in Assemblies with this sub:

Sub testReplacePartInAss()
Call ReplacePartInAss("W:INVENTORTPart1.ipt", "W:INVENTORTPart2.ipt")
End Sub

[Code] .....

But if the assembly is a weldment assembly the line

If oOcc.ReferencedDocumentDescriptor.FullDocumentName = sInAssFilename Then

creates an error '91' that the object is not set.

What has to be changed in this code so that it will work with 'normal' assemblies AND weldment Assemblies too.

AutoCAD Inventor :: Derived Weldment Changes To 2 Solid Bodies

Apr 24, 2012

Open the attached file 207665-124.ipt. how their is only one Solid Body, but the iam needs to be updated because the user added one more part to the assembly.  As soon as it updates now instead of one Solid Body I have 2.  I don't want 2 and this is not typical.  Even if I derive the 207665-120 into a brand new part file, it is only one body. What is causing this to seperate into 2 bodies?  I tried to re-create this from scratch and can't, but he has several files like this that need updates and the 2 bodies causes problems with the holes.

May 27, 2012

My design consists of two steel rails that are welded together on top of a guardrail system. To allow the weld to be added between the steel rails I have converted my assembly file to a weldment.

My question is now I have this converted assembly with it's weld in the design can this still be used to perform stress analysis on ? I am not sure the need for assembly to be converted to allow a weld to be added.

AutoCAD Inventor :: Weldment Assembly - Constraining On Revolved Part

Jan 24, 2013

I'm really struggling with constraining a weldment assembly. I've attached a JPG of the Assembly but I cant get the constrains to go where I want them.

Basically this assembly is a wheel with three equally spaced stays welded to a large nut hub. I have constrained the center axis of the wheel to the center axis of the Nut so the wheel and nut will remain aligned.

What I'm struggling with is constraining the three stays to the wheel and to the nut equally spaced around the nut.

AutoCAD Inventor :: Unable To Save File Name

Aug 17, 2013

Have an easy file open and am trying to save a copy with a new name and Inventor either does nothing or crashes.  Original full path and file name contains 243 characters (counting from drive letter to extension)  New one will have 247 characters.

This is supposedly within the path/file name character limits for windows 7, which according to the ms website is 260 minus one for the null character at the end making it 259.  So I am over 10 characters shy of the limit dictated by the OS.

Is inventor placing a stricter limit on the number of characters in the full path/file name?  If so, why?

Obviously, working up the tree and adjusting upper level folder names is not an option as that would break every link in every assembly at that level or lower.

AutoCAD Inventor :: Extruding To Complex Surface

May 16, 2012

I can't post the original files, but I have gotten permission to post jpegs of what I am trying to do.

My end goal is to fill in between the grey part and the surface.  The surface comes from another part in the assembly, and I used Copy Object to get the surface in this part file.  Ideally I would like to do something like Extrude> To Next and select the surface as my terminator.  I have done this with success with curved surfaces, but not complex curved surfaces.  Does Inventor not handle extruding to complex curves?

Another option I tried was simply extending this part out beyond the surface using the Split feature to trim the part.  Again, to no avail.  I also tried creating a subassembly of this part and the part the surface is derived from with this part extending beyond the surface, deriving it and subtracting the surface part so I could use Delete Face with the Lump option.  No dice there, either.

There was a hole in the side of the surface where I am trying to extrude the part (it is still open on the other side of the surface), but I used Patch and it seemed to fill it in just fine.

How to get accurate fill volume data in complex assemblies.

AutoCAD Inventor :: Extruding A Fully Constrained Sketch

Nov 1, 2012

I'm having trouble extruding a fully constrained sketch. The sketch is a cross-section of a hollow cylinder that is splined on the inside surface (see attached part file). The line segments that create these splines seem to be grouped together because moving one line moves the others, however the sketch will not extrude.

I can't use the coincident constraint button to group the lines because they don't separate from each other. I also tried to use the close loop button but was unable to select all the necessary lines.

how I can extrude this sketch or make an equivalent sketch that is easier to extrude

AutoCAD Inventor :: Lofting / Extruding To A Point Along A Curve

Jul 15, 2012

Coming from Sketch up to real big boy tools. I watched the tutorial videos and tried poking around a bit for this specific answer but came up a bit short.

What I'm trying to do is loft a face to a point. Easy enough. I've got my point established on an offset work plane, and I can just loft to that, however, I get nothing but straight lines. (First attachment)

An example of the ideal outcome in SketchUp is the second attachment.

I'm having the most difficulty trying to draw the curves along which I want the face to be lofted because, even as I sketch along my 2D plane, I can't snap the endpoints of my arcs to the endpoints of the face (or the point to which they'll all connect).

AutoCAD Inventor :: Extruding Fully Constrained Sketch

If I try the constraint like how it is now, it only allows me to select one segment, not the entire triangular shaped line. It would work if inventor saw the sketch as one single element, but it of course does not. I tried making a 3d sketch of the inner surface and then constraining to that, but it did not work.
