AutoCAD Inventor :: Cannot Convert To Weldment
May 31, 2013
I have a medium sized assembly that I was working with. I decided I needed to create a weldment, so I stripped the assembly of all subassemblies, individual parts, etc and saved it as a different name. However, Inventor will not allow me to convert it to a weldment. That optoin is greyed out.
The only thing I can think of is I have a base part that I have hidden. It is used to drive the assembly. Perhaps that is causing a problem, but I cannot remove it or all associativity will be lost. I deleted it temporarily to try, but did not save it. The convert to weldment option did not appear after I deleted it.

I just was upgraded to Inventor 2014. I've got an assembly that I want to convert into a weldment. The "Convert to Weldment" icon doesn't appear where it used to be in 2013. I cannot find a way to make it pop up. Is it no longer possible to use this button to convert a an assembly into a weldment?

I'm trying to model plug welds in IV2014. I've read all the posts here that say that I need to split the hole faces. Problem is, the split face command doesn't seem to appear in weldments. I want to make the holes to be plugged as a weld preparation. Am I just missing something here, or is IV so backward that a common weld can only be achieved when not working with a weldment?

I started my project, the design is basically a bulkhead chassis design with multiple access panels on all 3 sides. I wanted all of the hole patterns on this assembly to be based on one sketch. So I created a base part inside the assembly, this part compiled of sketches and the sketches compiled of construct lines and points (for panel and chassis fastener hole patterns). This was going great, after learning a couple tricks.
Manufactuing had determined that I need to machine the holes on the chassis after welding. Which means I need to move the adaptive features, from the part files, to the assembly file.
So here is my problem, assembly sketchs are not adaptable? Either projecting to (from that base part file), or projecting from (from the assembly sketch to the part file). I tried both. How I should model this? How do I make weldment machining adaptive?

In past I replaced components in Assemblies with this sub:
Sub testReplacePartInAss()
Call ReplacePartInAss("W:INVENTORTPart1.ipt", "W:INVENTORTPart2.ipt")
End Sub
[Code] .....
But if the assembly is a weldment assembly the line
If oOcc.ReferencedDocumentDescriptor.FullDocumentName = sInAssFilename Then
creates an error '91' that the object is not set.
What has to be changed in this code so that it will work with 'normal' assemblies AND weldment Assemblies too.

Open the attached file 207665-124.ipt. how their is only one Solid Body, but the iam needs to be updated because the user added one more part to the assembly. As soon as it updates now instead of one Solid Body I have 2. I don't want 2 and this is not typical. Even if I derive the 207665-120 into a brand new part file, it is only one body. What is causing this to seperate into 2 bodies? I tried to re-create this from scratch and can't, but he has several files like this that need updates and the 2 bodies causes problems with the holes.

Is it possible to export a weldment and include the weld volumes? I'm attempting to export to an .stl file and the welds are missing in the resultant file. (Or am I doing something wrong?) The weldment was converted from a standard assembly file, but the BoM structure was set to Normal, not Inseparable.

I have a weldment which includes a sheet metal part called sPart. I want to show a detail of the flat pattern of sPart on the weldment drawing and still be able to balloon the flat as the part of the weldment. So I clicked to add base view and selected sPart from the Preparation dropdown list under the Model State tab of the Drawing View dialog box. The problem is I cannot find an option for using the parts flat pattern.

My design consists of two steel rails that are welded together on top of a guardrail system. To allow the weld to be added between the steel rails I have converted my assembly file to a weldment.
My question is now I have this converted assembly with it's weld in the design can this still be used to perform stress analysis on ? I am not sure the need for assembly to be converted to allow a weld to be added.

What might cause some parts to retain there weld prep chamfers in the part file & other parts don't show the chamfers except in the assembly like an assembly feature?
I noticed that when parts were in a pattern & Weld Prep/chamfered, they retained the chamfer feature in the part.

I'm really struggling with constraining a weldment assembly. I've attached a JPG of the Assembly but I cant get the constrains to go where I want them.
Basically this assembly is a wheel with three equally spaced stays welded to a large nut hub. I have constrained the center axis of the wheel to the center axis of the Nut so the wheel and nut will remain aligned.
What I'm struggling with is constraining the three stays to the wheel and to the nut equally spaced around the nut.

I was wondering if there is a way to change the appearance of a face in a weldment assembly environment. I have a weldment which in the machining process a part of weld bead as well as a portion of one of the components is machined down (spot faced) and I need to change the appearance of those face to polished, but it doesn't let me do that?

Is it possible to convert a DWF to an .ipt (or .iam) file so that I can use the base DWF geometry in an Inventor assembly?
I have a dwf file that a customer sent me that is ~1.5 Mb. I asked to get it in a usable format and they sent a .stp file that is 23.3 Mb and Invetor just hangs (not responding). I let it try to load a few times for several hours without any luck.

Using Inventor 2014.
I was going to send autocad drawing to our client.
I found that converting IDW to DXF/DWG doesn't always get 1:1 scale on the DXF/DWG drawing.
In other words, some drawings are fine and the others are not.
It was set correctly in "Options..." by selecting "Base View Scale - Model Space".
There is nothing wrong with IDW files and all these files are using same template.

I have some Inventor drawing files that a client wants in an AutoCAD 2007 format. Ever time I try to convert the .idw to an autocad .dwg I get this message, "Problems encountered while saving the document." So far this is what I've tried:
1. Save copy as -> Save as type: AutoCAD DWG files (*.dwg) -> error message
2. Export to DWG -> Save as type: AutoCAD DWG files (*.dwg) -> error message
I am able to save as an Inventor DWG but I need it as an AutoCAD DWG... I think. I read somewhere that Autocad 2007 won't read the DWG unless its in an AutoCAD DWG format.
I am running Inventor 2014 on a Windows 7 64 bit machine.

I'm looking for a way to convert the iproperty value "volume" into length from known values in the part. I have an assembly which consists of 20 different typs of sheets which are rolled out in certain patterns. The width and depth of the sheet are known, and I would like to use the volume to find the length. The assembly is linked to an excel file so the values will change based on certain parameters. I'm using this as a check to make sure there is no error from the spreadsheet.

A quick search of the forum didn't reveal answers to my elementary question so here it is. I'm working to get some design components manufactured overseas. The manufacturer uses Pro/E but in one of their very cryptic emails they told me to convert all files to .stp and .igs files. What I need to know is which of these file formats applies to assemblies and which applies to part file. In other words, when I open a part file, should I export it as a .stp file, or a .igs file?
