AutoCAD Inventor :: Some Weldment Parts Show Prep Chamfer Some Don't
Oct 5, 2011
What might cause some parts to retain there weld prep chamfers in the part file & other parts don't show the chamfers except in the assembly like an assembly feature?
I noticed that when parts were in a pattern & Weld Prep/chamfered, they retained the chamfer feature in the part.

Is it possible to export a weldment and include the weld volumes? I'm attempting to export to an .stl file and the welds are missing in the resultant file. (Or am I doing something wrong?) The weldment was converted from a standard assembly file, but the BoM structure was set to Normal, not Inseparable.

When I started prepping CNC files, it seemed like an arduous task. I focus around woodwork and inventor focuses around metal so sheet metal exports to 2D flat files but parts don't. After various methods I decided to make my own method. This is what I do-
I set up various sheet formats as full scale 1:1 stock and sheet sizes
I add the sheet size or material stock size that I need
I made a vba routine to pop up a form and browse to the part. The routine then inserts the part at scale 1:1 on its largest face. Once the part is positioned, the pop up returns for the next part. ( the file path remains to prevent browsing every time )
When I'm done. I run another vba routine to export all sheets as autocad drawings. I have sketch symbols for grain directions etc and materials are preset in the iproperties during modeling.

How to to make a part have different arrangements (e.g. a suppliers hydraulic cylinder extracted and collapsed) , and then show the part in an assembly in the two different positions. I am not sure if Iparts is the way to go, as I want both the arrangements to be displayed as the same part in the BOM.... the equivalent term is 'configurations' in solid works.

Sometimes I turn various parts (visibility) off in an assembly. If I want to turn them all on again without doing it one at a time or selecting them all individually, I find IV turns everything OFF first, then I have to reselect them all again and turn evrything on. Can it be done in one step instead of two? IV2008SP1

The following is the problem: I have an assy with multiple different frames. If I make a parst list in the IDW all the frame members are shown seperatey, I just want to show only the frames in de parts list. I tried grouping, but when two assy's are the same that doesn't work any more.

a new part and linking to the same excel file, the original parameters are all that are shown; not the new ones.

For some reason when I start either the bolted connection generator or the shaft generator, the content center parts don't show up if I select "modify" to change the parts. For example: I wanted to create an axle with a retaining-ring-groove. I created the axle, and under Features I selected Retaining Ring.
Then a dialog shows up with some standard dimensions, and on the right under "Position" it says "ASME B 27.7M". When I click here, an empty dialogbox shows with filter "All" activated.
It should show all retaining rings available in the content center. The strange thing however is that when I exit this function and start the ordinary "Place from Content Center" command, I can see all retaining rings that are available (see pictures).
The same thing occurs when using the bolted connection generator.

I have to show paint coverage/masking areas on certain parts, and to obtain the look I am after, I thought about using the split command and changing the face colors as necessary to show this. I have never used this command before, and was wondering what the pro's and con's are to using it, and also if this is even the best way to go about this?

I have a medium sized assembly that I was working with. I decided I needed to create a weldment, so I stripped the assembly of all subassemblies, individual parts, etc and saved it as a different name. However, Inventor will not allow me to convert it to a weldment. That optoin is greyed out.
The only thing I can think of is I have a base part that I have hidden. It is used to drive the assembly. Perhaps that is causing a problem, but I cannot remove it or all associativity will be lost. I deleted it temporarily to try, but did not save it. The convert to weldment option did not appear after I deleted it.

I'm trying to model plug welds in IV2014. I've read all the posts here that say that I need to split the hole faces. Problem is, the split face command doesn't seem to appear in weldments. I want to make the holes to be plugged as a weld preparation. Am I just missing something here, or is IV so backward that a common weld can only be achieved when not working with a weldment?

I started my project, the design is basically a bulkhead chassis design with multiple access panels on all 3 sides. I wanted all of the hole patterns on this assembly to be based on one sketch. So I created a base part inside the assembly, this part compiled of sketches and the sketches compiled of construct lines and points (for panel and chassis fastener hole patterns). This was going great, after learning a couple tricks.
Manufactuing had determined that I need to machine the holes on the chassis after welding. Which means I need to move the adaptive features, from the part files, to the assembly file.
So here is my problem, assembly sketchs are not adaptable? Either projecting to (from that base part file), or projecting from (from the assembly sketch to the part file). I tried both. How I should model this? How do I make weldment machining adaptive?

In past I replaced components in Assemblies with this sub:
Sub testReplacePartInAss()
Call ReplacePartInAss("W:INVENTORTPart1.ipt", "W:INVENTORTPart2.ipt")
End Sub
[Code] .....
But if the assembly is a weldment assembly the line
If oOcc.ReferencedDocumentDescriptor.FullDocumentName = sInAssFilename Then
creates an error '91' that the object is not set.
What has to be changed in this code so that it will work with 'normal' assemblies AND weldment Assemblies too.

Open the attached file 207665-124.ipt. how their is only one Solid Body, but the iam needs to be updated because the user added one more part to the assembly. As soon as it updates now instead of one Solid Body I have 2. I don't want 2 and this is not typical. Even if I derive the 207665-120 into a brand new part file, it is only one body. What is causing this to seperate into 2 bodies? I tried to re-create this from scratch and can't, but he has several files like this that need updates and the 2 bodies causes problems with the holes.

I have a weldment which includes a sheet metal part called sPart. I want to show a detail of the flat pattern of sPart on the weldment drawing and still be able to balloon the flat as the part of the weldment. So I clicked to add base view and selected sPart from the Preparation dropdown list under the Model State tab of the Drawing View dialog box. The problem is I cannot find an option for using the parts flat pattern.

My design consists of two steel rails that are welded together on top of a guardrail system. To allow the weld to be added between the steel rails I have converted my assembly file to a weldment.
My question is now I have this converted assembly with it's weld in the design can this still be used to perform stress analysis on ? I am not sure the need for assembly to be converted to allow a weld to be added.

I'm really struggling with constraining a weldment assembly. I've attached a JPG of the Assembly but I cant get the constrains to go where I want them.
Basically this assembly is a wheel with three equally spaced stays welded to a large nut hub. I have constrained the center axis of the wheel to the center axis of the Nut so the wheel and nut will remain aligned.
What I'm struggling with is constraining the three stays to the wheel and to the nut equally spaced around the nut.

Is there a way to dimension chamfers like in the second pic below so that the values update. You can do a linear dimension and then alter the text and try and find that dimension in the list, but the chamfer tool works well with two clicks but you only get it with a leader. I would like the same function but with a linear dimension sometimes. It would be good if you could choose it. 45° is probably not a really good example, but the leader version is not always so clear.

In Autodesk Inventor 2013. I have a simple cylinder extrusion with a rectangle attached to the cylinder. Drawing file attached(extrusion 1). Whenever I apply a chamfer to one of the straight edges, Inventor generates negative taper on the cylinder wall (if you zoom in with a window, you can clearly see that their are two lines on the cylinder wall where the chamfer edges was applied).
Is there anyway to prevent this from happening? This gives me all sorts of problem in my CAM software because the tool is trying to machine in an area it cannot get to.
As a work around I have to create a new part file with a small gap between the cylinder and the chamfered edges. This keeps the cylinder edges nice and straight with no taper. The work around is attached as well. Since the tool can't go that far into the corner given the radius of the tool, the gap has no affect on me generating code. I have tried many different ways on creating this part with chamfers with no luck. Once the chamfer is generated, it should match the profile of the cylinder.
