AutoCAD Inventor :: How To Copy Frame Design Without Linking

Dec 27, 2011

I have an existing frame design by Inventor but then i wish to copy out the existing design and modify it ! so i try with the copy function in design assistant but then i found that after i modified the frame size or profile in the copied frame design, the existing frame design changed as well! How to break the link between these two frame design on this case?

AutoCAD Inventor :: Frame Design - Trim To Frame Fails With Custom Profile

I created an extruded aluminium profile (attached file: Item Profile 8 80x80) which I published into the Content Center. When using this profile in a frame design, and using the Trim To Frame command, the profiles are trimmed at a weird angle (attached pdf file).

AutoCAD Inventor :: Linking Frame Generator Parts To Sketches

Mar 2, 2012

I dont know if this is possible or not. What it is, is that we use skeletal modelling, so we use intelligent "master sketches". Now we are just starting to use frame generator also and we want to combine the 2 methods.

An example of how we work is this.......

Lets say, we are designing the base of a basic frame. Now, we sketch in the profile of the RHS that will run along the front of the base and we also sketch in the elevation view of this RHS (see snip 1). This gives us 2 sketches to derive in to create a new part of RHS.

If I change the size of the profile of the RHS within the "master sketch" the newly created RHS part will update to suit. This also applies if I change the length of the RHS within the elevation view within the "master sketch".

So, now we want to add in a 5mm thick plate that sits flush with the top of the RHS, we sketch in a 3mm thick rectangle and make the top line colinear with the top line of the RHS profile sketch (see snip 2). We would then derive through these sketches and use them to create this plate as an ipt.

So now we have 2 parts, 1 length of RHS and 1 piece of plate. If we place these to parts into an assembly and ground them to their "root" then the plate will be sitting flush with the top of the RHS.

If I change the profile of the RHS to 50mm taller in the sketch, then the plate will move up to suit and stay flush with the RHS in the assembly.

NOW, what we want is to use frame generaotor along side this method. Instead of deriving through the first 2 sketches to create the the RHS, we want to create the RHS using frame generator and the elevation sketch BUT what we also want is when we change the profile sketch of the RHS, the Frame generator generated part updates to suit the altered sketch. The reason we want this is because we control all our full assemblies using sketches.

Lets take the same bunch of aforementioned sketches and create the parts using FG.

So I have the RHS profile sketched out at 100x50 and the plate sketch sits colinear with the top of this.

I then go through the motions to create the RHS within FG.

I choose RHS from the drop down menu, then choose 100x50 from the "size" drop down menu. I then use the elevation sketch to specify the length.

Now if I increase the size of the RHS (to 150x50) within the sketch, the plate will move up to suit BUT the actual part of the RHS which was created using FG will still stay the same size (100x50), and the plate will be shown as floating within the assembly!!!

If I do it the other way, i.e. change the size fo the RHS within FG, then the sketch will still show the original size and the plate will still sit flush with this original size. This will show the plate as sitting too low in the assembly!!!

Is there anyway at all, that we can link the profile sketch dimensions to the FG generated parts, so that if we edit the profile size of the RHS to a larger or smaller size then FG will automatically alter the generated part to suit the profile sketch???

Is this at all possible???? Or will we just have to alter both the sketch AND the FG part? We really don't want to use adaptive parts within our assembly, we always just control our assemblies with our "master sketches".

AutoCAD Inventor :: 2012 - Linking Drawing To A Copy

Jun 15, 2012

Wondering if it was possible to have a .idw drawing automatically update all its copies with any annotation changes. They would all be linked to the same model and would update if the model was altered, but I need only one master drawing whose annotations can be altered. The copies would be read-only, and would be updated when the master changes. Does Inventor have a function like this that links a drawing to its copies?

AutoCAD Inventor :: ILogic Design Copy - Error Copying A File / Inventor Crashes

Nov 5, 2013

I'm trying to use iLogic Design Copy to copy an assembly and all its associated parts to another directory. The assembly contains content center parts. Inventor warns me that the destination file of one of the CC parts (and 18 others) will be overwritten. When I go ahead and copy anyway, the copying process stops at that specific CC part. The Design Copy Progress dialog box states there is an error copying that CC part. When I close the Design Copy Progress dialog box, Inventor crashes.

The error copying the CC part: I'm allowed to use content center parts in iLogic Design Copied stuff, right? I searched some related topics and I'm under the impression that Inventor keeps the CC parts in its own directory and shouldn't be trying to overwrite them.

AutoCAD Inventor :: Vault - Copy Design

Aug 29, 2012

I am making a copy design of a big file, two things I need to change manually which takes lots of time:

I need to change the status of files from Reuse to Copy, also I need to change the paths to the right ones as the paths that kick in by default when I change the main directory on the top are not right.

Is there a quick way of changing status of all the files to Copy, kinda shift and highlight or the way Vault renames files with Replace option? With big assemblies connected with 10 drawing files doing it all by hand.

AutoCAD Inventor :: VBA And ILogic Design Copy

Nov 10, 2011

I have two questions - one simple and one more complex, in my opinion. As of now I have a user form where one can enter a variety of values, hit a button, and it writes these values to a designated excel sheet. My first question is how would I be able to allow the user to change one value and have the rest of the entered values change based on this one value. For example if someone were to change the ID # of a part then the height and width would change corresponding to that ID number and would be displayed in the user form. I'm new to VBA so my thought process is kind of trash at the moment...

My second question is whether or not it is possible to write a vba program/macro that automatically utilizes iLogic Design Copy and makes copies of an assembly and continues to copy said assembly while adding a constantly increasing suffix ie -01, -02, -03... for a given number of times.

AutoCAD Inventor :: How To Perform Copy Design With VB6 Program

Aug 26, 2011

I have an assembly as a template that was created by a previous employee.  There are known variables that are controlled with an Excel spreadsheet.

What I am attempting to do is create a VB form that the user can input the known variables and then have the program open the template, perform the changes, and copy to the vault. Sounds easy enough. A few caveats:

If I store the template in the Vault (preferred), how do I perform a "Copy Design" with a VB6 program? If I store it on a hidden network drive, this prevents users from screwing it up, but then I have to open each indivual file and perform a "SaveAs". Also easy enough. But, since the previous employee linked each component of the assembly to the Excel file, I would need to perform a "Change Source" to the newly created Excel spreadsheet in each component. Not sure how that is done. I do have VB2010 Express, but just not as comfortable with it as VB6. (I know, get with the current .Net)

AutoCAD Inventor :: Vault Copy Design Drops Information

May 3, 2013

You create a part, or assembly, check it into vault, then do a copy design in Vault. When you open the copied assembly, any sheet metal parts have reverted back to default thickness, making it so flat patterns don't work right until you manually change it. Also half of my custom parameters (sheet metal length and width) go missing and I have to type them in manually. Why does Inventor 2013 drop such information?

But the opposite way (i.e. LevelOfDetailRepresentation.CopyToDesignView) doesn't seem to exist - it is possible in the GUI.

Will I have to traverse the complete structure and set visibillity one by one to obtain the function then? Or are there a better/faster way to go?

I need to make an exact copy of the folder at different location in Vault. To use Copy Design tool, I would need to do it few times, as there are few totally separate files in the folders.

Now, is there a way of taking main folder with its all contants and just copying/renaming it to other location? It would save me lot of time.

AutoCAD Inventor :: ILogic Design Copy - Unable To Change Component Names?

Aug 11, 2011

I'm finally wrapping up work on an iLogic Configurator project and have started to brainstorm the best workflow to get this "Smart Assembly" into the design group's hands. I had been anxiously awaiting the new "iLogic Design Copy" feature in IV2012, but just recently learned that users are unable to effectively rename any components with this command.

Is this really true? If we can add prefixes or suffixes, what's stopping us from changing the entire filename?  We haven't upgraded to 2012 yet, but it seems like this may be a silly and unjustifiable restriction to a command that would otherwise save our designers hours of "file-management" (ie, manually renaming parts in Explorer, component replace in assy's, replace references in idw's, etc) each week.

Long story short, it seems that every workflow I've come across has had some sort of silly limitation that makes it undesireable for my application:

My top-level assembly contains all of the rules, and changes parameter values in the referenced skeletal parts. It also swaps standard parts for other standard parts as needed.I need access to rename ALL files (idw's, top-level assembly, subassemblies, and base components) while still maintaining/updating all internal hyperlinks between them.iLogic rules must be carried over to the new copied components (the existing "Copy Assembly" command strips the assembly of all rules). In light of the iLogic Design Copy's apparent shortcomings, any better workflow?

AutoCAD Inventor :: When Detailing Generated Frame View Shows Elongated Frame Members

Jul 26, 2012

I come across this problem from time to time and generally either just ignore it, if the detail is destined for in house manufacture, or alter it in autocad if it's destined for exterior suppliers.

Our guard frames are manufactured from extruded aluminum section (made by a company called palletti) I have when needed created a new frame generator frame member for each new x-section that we wish to use. I then draw a 2d sketch for the base frame skeleton and then a 3d sketch for all the frame work above. This I then use in an assembly to create the framework.  This framework assembly then goes into a second assembly where the framework is then adorned with all the accoutrements that make up a guard frame that we can then order as an assembled frame, panels feet, hinges et al.

When placing the views for the detailing of the second assembly sometimes the view will show the wrong length for one or some of the frame members.

;note how the left and right views are different and how some of the frame members are elongated on the lh view.

I'm guessing its because of the home grown frame members but all seems to work well other wise and this only happens infrequently.

AutoCAD Inventor :: Linking Parameters Between Parts

So i have a box with a left side, right side, top, bottom and a door in an assembly.I've linked all the parameters to the 'right side component' so that when i change it, it updates all the other parts in the assembly.

What I want to accomplish is to be able to use my BASE SIZED BOX ( say 500 x 500 ) to create many different sized boxes. The problem I have is when I save the assembly as a new one and save and replace all the components for the bigger box, all the components still reference the old part ( 500 x 500 right side component) instead of the bigger ( 600 x 600 right side component.

how to link parameters, don't know ilogic, and just know the basics of assemblies and part modeling.
