AutoCAD Civil 3D :: Scaling From Grid To Ground

Jun 27, 2012

Previously in LDD when I had a project i needed to transfer from grid to ground I could simply create a block of everything. Scale the entire block from a mid point of the site, explode the block, run check points and done.

Now in C3D 2012 when I explode my block it changes my elevations too. Yikes!!!! Luckily I had a copule of points

elevations labled and I noticed the new "Feature" of scaling my elevations too.

My site is 4,500' across and grid to ground changes it 0.32'

Is there a setting to change this behavior?

AutoCAD Civil 3D :: Ground To Grid

May 15, 2012

We here at work have recently implemented using the survey database feature in CAD as a better way of manipulating and organizing points in our drawings.  However, we have begun to notice a few issues with how the survey database imports points (?).

Sometimes, and I say sometimes because it is very sporratic, some drawings exhibit the issue and some do not, the points will be skewed off the linework (we are converting existing projects to the survey database).  In these situations I find that the Northing and Easting don't match the ascii file it was imported from, instead the "Grid Northing" and "Grid Easting" do.  Also, some drawings will have a slightly different Grid Northing and Grid Easting vs Northing and Easting, whereas some drawings will have the exact coordinates for both sets of fields. I believe the issue is one and same.

Our points handling goes like this, Data Collector--->TBC (where ground to grid and scaling is performed)---->exported to ascii file------>Imported to CAD.

This is very confusing and irritating at the same time, and really counterproductive to be troubleshooting why our points keep moving.  Redrawing the linework is NOT an option, we'll sooner go back to simple ascii file imports (where the problem is NOT present) then have to redo all of our work on our projects.

AutoCAD Civil 3D :: Grid Volume - Changing Grid Spacing

Jan 18, 2012

Understanding that composite volumes are typically more accurate, I have a reason to evaluate the volume between two surfaces via a grid volume.  Easily created a grid volume surface using a 50' grid (50' is large for this site, but wanted to get a feel for calculation time).

Question: Can you change the grid size without creating a new grid surface?  Ultimately I woud like to explore the difference in volumes based on grid sizing without creating a long list of surfaces.  One would expect that you could chage the grid spacing in surface properties, but the values are non-editable.

How do I get it to extend?

AutoCAD Civil 3D :: Existing Ground Surface And Data Shortcuts?

Mar 27, 2012

I have a rather large project for a roadway reconstruction.  Therefore, the existing utilities are in a separate drawing and the existing ground surface model is in a separate drawing.  All the above surface items (curb and gutter, asphalt, concrete, signs, sidewalks, landscaping, etc..) are in the master drawing.  I then xref'd in my utility drawing and though I would use data shortcuts for my existing ground surface drawing.  I took the surveyed triangles (3d faces) from our raw survey drawing and copied them into my surface drawing, created a surface from the triangles, created a boundary and such.  So far everything is good.  I created the working folder for the data shortcuts for this project and saved the drawing and closed it.  I went into my master drawing and clicked on "Create Reference".  I did not promote.  The reference came though and everything is fine.  Now I want to add contour labels in my surface drawing which I did but they do not show up in my master drawing but the contours themselves do.  Do I have to promote this drawing into my master drawing so I can create the contour labels in my master drawing?  I guess that is fine but the issue is we have small areas of topo that will be added as needed down the road.  If I promote the surface drawing into my master drawing then when I add topo to the surface drawing, it wont update in my master drawing.

AutoCAD Civil 3D :: Existing Ground Not Shown In Corridor Section Editor

Jul 7, 2011

I've worked with LDD for 11 yrs. Last week the IT guys changed my PC to Windows 7 64bit, so I can't have LDD and I have to work with C3D. so I am following software tutorials.

for designing a road I created:

alignment ---> surface profile ---> layout profile (project line) ---> assembly ---> subassemblies ---> corridor ---> set target surface and frequencies

Corridor is created with daylights ,but I don't see existing ground in corridor section editor.

There is nothing about this in tutorial. Also I don't know how to calculate the volumes, in LDD after this stage we could calculate the volumes. i think in C3D I should do more for calculation.

AutoCAD Civil 3D :: Survey Points With Ground Coordinates Are Scaled Inserted Into Drawing?

Sep 5, 2013

Using Civil 3D 2013Coordinates coming out of survey equipment are modified state plane GROUND (scaled up from the origin by the combined factor).Drawing is setup with state plane coordinate system with user defined transformation to establish geodetic reference and the ability to label lat/long or import Bing map data.Survey database is setup with "No Datum, No Projection" (data is already at ground, I don't want ot transformed).Import style is PNEZD and is set to use Northing/Easting not Grid Northing/Grid Easting. After importing points into survey database, coordinates of survey points match the CSV.  This is good. After importing points from database to drawing, they are taken as grid coordinates, are scaled again and are off ~5,300 feet northeast. Why would Civil 3D assume the points in the database are grid and scale them when the import style used did not specify grid?  Is there a setting or something I can do to tell Civil 3D to leave my coordinates alone?

AutoCAD Civil 3D :: Create All New Existing Surface Over Existing Ground

Sep 28, 2012

I'm trying to create an all new existing surface over existing ground. I have a TIN surface of the EG, and I have drawn overlay splines that describe the new surface, but how to go about creating that design surface.

It is a compound surface, open on one end and closed all around on the other, somewhat like a half of a football stadium, but with an irregular upper edge because I am needing to figure out cuts and fills to manipulate the EG into this new surface without costly major terraforming. There is about 40-50' vertical elevation between the "field" and the upper rim with a generally constant 7-10 deg. slope all around. I'm just at a loss to figure out how to approach this project, and am quite new to Civil 3D.

AutoCAD 2013 :: Civil Tag Scaling

Oct 25, 2013

We receive site survey dwgs generated in Civil 3D that contain 3D topos with elevation tags. The elevation tags are clearly scalabe anno objects that scale correctly in the received civil dwg. The elevation tags won't scale correctly in our dwgs - they come in too small to see.

- Both dwg's have units set to decimal.

- I tried copying / pasting the viewport from the civil dwg to our dwg and the text is still too small. This tells me it's a dwg specific variable and not a viewport setting.

- I have Civil 3D object enabler installed, though I don't think this has any bearing.

It would be nice to use the original tags and not have to re-create every elevation tag.

AutoCAD Civil 3D :: Scaling - Units In Drawing

The page set-up for layout 1 was for 24x36 drawing size (typ.)I know need to make a layout 2 for a sheet size 11x17 but I can not get my viewport to scale correctly. So, if a 24x36 sheet size had a VP with scale 0.004 (1:250) then what is the scale for a sheet size 11x17 ?

AutoCAD Civil 3D :: Scaling Drawing In Model Space

Dec 19, 2012

i'm working on a drawing started by someone else. They do everything in model space...no paperspace and no viewports. drawing and border are both in model space. I'm not used to just model space.

How do i set the scale of the drawing in model space? do i need to use different size borders to get the correct scale? I'm drawing everything 1:1 and i need my final prints to be on 11x17 paper.

on a previous drawingi see that they used a scale of 1/16"=1' but how they determined this scale. going thru other sheets in the setd of drawings it seems that they used different border sizes (but all are printed on 11x17 paper)...some are printed not to scale if they have no set scale...like details.

example of what i need to do:

I need to show a building rooftop plan view (the entire rooftop) on one sheet. on the next sheet i need to zoom into a portion of the rooftop.

normally i would use viewports to do this. but in model space i dont see how this is done. do i need to have a set of different size borders? but how then can i print them on 11x17 without using "scale to fit"?

AutoCAD Civil 3D :: Scaling Points Without Changing Elevations

Oct 28, 2009

Any way to scale points, and or objects in a 2 dimensional manner only? I've got a bunch of survey points imported from a csv file, and they are at a grid scale. I need to scale the data by a factor of 1.000125 in this case to get ground distances between the points for the client. I do not want the elevations to change.

In LDDT this was not an issue as I always had the points inserted at zero elevation, but they maintained the elevation data as part of the point. It seams that in Civil 3D my points automatically appear at true elevation, so when I scale a group of points, the elevations changes as well as the elevation of any lines connected to the points. Is there a way to work 2 dimensionally with 3D data?

AutoCAD Civil 3D :: Fix Trashes Point Label Style Scaling

Jun 22, 2011

Point label styles do not scale properly in raster plots.  Raster plots have long been my fix for making wipeouts and masks behave.  Without the excellent fix raster plots have been, I'm sunk!  All of my work depends upon raster plotting to maintain consistently correct output with absolutely no wipeout or masking errors.  My point label styles all have a text height of 0.11" which is the plotted height according to the documentation.  They are exactly the right height in all page setups with non-raster plot devices.  But, when my page setup includes a raster device the text is scaled to just a speck. It should be 32 pixels high at the 288 pixels per inch I have specified but it is barely two or three pixels high both on my display and in my ploits.

The attachments show the wipeout/mask problem in 2012 DWF output and the rescaling of point labels in 2012 raster (TIFF) output.  I am in critical need of a fix that does not involve special point label styles just for raster plots.  Autodesk!?  I already have to use a special pen tables for raster plots with pens sizes scaled for each dpi resolution I use but that has been settled for many years now.

AutoCAD Civil 3D :: Profile Label Scaling In View Ports

Apr 3, 2012

I have two files...

File 1: with a Profile View => Units set to Meters and Scale set to 1:100
File 2: Units set to Milimeters, Model Space Scale set to 1:100 (same as File 1), Viewport Scale set to 1:100 , Plot style scale set to 1:1

Now I want to X-Ref the "File 1" into "File 2" but when I do that, Civ3D scales all the Profile Labels to huge size. I understand, it has to do with different units (meters and millimeters) set in both file... but thats the way I want this to be...

Please note, in File 2: Model Space scale 1:100 is different than Viewport Scale 1:100, because Model Space scale 1:100 is coming from "File 1" which is set to Meters.

I even tried to keep both Model Space Scale and Viewport Scale same in "File 2" but that didn' work either.

AutoCAD Civil 3D :: Text Scaling By A Factor In Model Space

Nov 21, 2013

For some reason when I edit text and dimensions in model space the text will go huge and my text is non-annotative. If i change it in properties box it does not multiple it or if I am editing text though a viewport it will not multiply.  Example - if I have style set to 4 (height) and I create mtext.

Then I decide that I want text to be 5 so I double click on mtext and highlight the text and change to 5 and the text will instantly be 200 not 5, but if I change in properties box it will stay at 5 or if I am in a viewport and change the text by double clicking and highlighting and then changing it to 5 it stays at 5.  My issue is for whatever reason only in model space is the text being multiplied by a factor and I cannot figure out why this is happening.

AutoCAD Civil 3D :: Annotative Objects Scaling To Current View Scale?

Jun 26, 2012

I love annotative scaling of objects it is a great feature. I am however having one problem that I'm not sure if I've missed a setting or something.  Is there a way to prevent civil 3d from scaling your annotative objects based on the view scale you are looking at?  For example if I zoom out (in model space or max viewport) to show my entire drawing and regen, civil 3d scales all my text and blocks to an enomous scale esentially blocking my entire drawing with solid colour. also if I zoom into a small area to do some detail work all my text becomes microscopic and unuseable. This makes adjusting text so it doesn;t overlap other text very difficult if it never appears at the correct size. Is there a way to freeze annotative objects at thier correct scale (for the current viewport scale) so they dont scale simply because you zoom in or out on a drawing?
